    Hello, Jake.

Question: Will Deftones fans jump hoops to explain that Vexes are not in fact nu metal?

    • Joaquin Stick

If someone yells “jumpdafuqup” in a forest and no one is around to hear, do they really exist?

    • I LIKE most of the Deftones’ records, but I have no problem admitting they were totally nu metal on the first two records (they haven’t been since White Pony). Rapping, a DJ, nu metal fashion choices = nu metal.

      • GoatForest

Same with my weird relationship with Korn.

        • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

I still maintain that Issues is a killer album

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Issues is better than people give it credit for and imo the second best Korn album by miles.

          • GoatForest

Agreed. At that point Korn much stronger gothic industrial vibe than straight nu metal, in my opinion.

        • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

The first Korn album is superb.

          • GoatForest

That it is. I still enjoy Issues, Untouchables, and parts of Follow the Leader.

    • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Oh Deftones were nu metal as fuck on Adrenaline, Around the Fur and at least parts of White Pony. Doesn’t bother me though. I love all those records.

  • Janitor Jim Duggan

I never liked Pierce The Veil. Even my sister grew out of liking them. While I’m at it I’m very excited for the new Turnstile album.

  • HessianHunter

That new Moth jam makes me very excited – shit’s heavy, man

    • Joaquin Stick

I’ve been a long time almost fan of them, but this song riffs rill good.

      • xengineofdeathx

I feel like it’s a slight step down from their other material, but still rad.

  • Janitor Jim Duggan

Also if someone can make an EP about space dinosaur wars what could possibly be next? A rock opera about that really awesome TV show/toy series M.A.S.K? What about a concept album about the video game Cool Spot and its aftermath? I have a good idea for one: A concept album saga about Chester Cheetah’s life and times based off his video game Too Cool To Fool.

    • i am a little jealous of your ability to remember all sorts of cultural memes throughout the years and assemble them in seemingly random ways.

      • Janitor Jim Duggan

I’m good at what I do. Am I the only one who loves Cool Spot though? It’s a good platformer involving the 7-UP mascot.

        • that game kicked fuqqin’ butt

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

It sure did. I still have it for my Sega Genesis.

  • GrumpLumpusCrumpus

  • Janitor Jim Duggan

Yay, new Loudness! They’re so good.

  • themaleshoegaze

So, new American Nightmare, not really surprising, but this is the first I hear of it.
(OT: I seem to be the only person to think that the name change to Give Up The Ghost they were once legally obliged to make was actually a change for the better. Cooler, less obvious name.)
Here’s hoping it’s a good comeback and Eisold still has it as a lyricist. (The featured song’s lyrics aren’t totally on par with his stuff from way back when).

  • The big news this week is that we adopted one of the kittens we were fostering. Say hi to tiny Darlene, pictured here sleeping on da missus’s shoulder. Her sister Becky got adopted as well and the mother, Roseanne, is up for adoption now too. She’s only basically a kitten herself.

    • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

the mother, Roseanne, is up for adoption now too. She’s only basically a kitten herself

So teenage pregnancy is a problem with cats as well. We need to tell Congress we want Planned Parenthood for all (even cats)

      • AndySynn

Bah, proper abstinence-only education for all good cats is the only way to curb this problem!

  • tigeraid

I enjoyed Times of Grace. Should be interesting to see where they go from their first album.

  • AndySynn

New Watain album is surprisingly good fun. Like a more stripped-down and straightforward version of “Sworn…”

New Oceans of Slumber was/is disappointing. All the pieces are there, but it never quite recovers from the interminable crawl of its intro (and the whole band look extremely awkward and not at all “into it” in that video).

In a world where we still have Jesse Leach back in KsE… do we really need Times of Grace?

    • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

I don’t think we even needed a KsE in the first place. This is the only Times Of Grace I’m interested in

    • Retchin’ Rites ov Karhu

Times of Grace have been promising a “different” record, bith from the debut, and KsE – but I guess we’ll have to see if they actually bank on that. I might be into them letting loose a bit more.

    • GoatForest

Yeah, this new Watain single has actually renewed my hope for the new album. We’ll see.

Early Katatonia is the ONLY Katatonia. See also Anathema.

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

        Early Anathema >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
For some reason I think Serenades and Pentecost III sound about 10 times more morose and desolate than the stuff they put out when they started to become that post-Radiohead incarnation they’ve turned into now. Darren White was awesome.

        • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

I don’t think they are even trying to be desolate now. A song about how the world is a beautiful place is certainly not desolate

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Good point. Weather Systems was the last Anathema record I listened to in full, and that one – as well as the three that came before – bored the shit out of me.

          • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

Well, I like Radiohead and Pink Floyd, so I like modern Anathema. But yeah, their old Peaceville doom sound was the best. At least we still have My Dying Bride, and Paradise Lost put out a brilliant album this year

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I’m quite the Pink Floyd fan, but I can’t stand Radiohead. I don’t even know why I dislike them so much, but I went through quite a few of their most acclaimed albums…and I hated every minute.

          • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

That’s how I feel about U2. They fact that I woke up one day and found one of their fucking albums in my iTunes library certainly didn’t help me appreciate them

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Me and U2’s music aren’t exactly made for each other either.

          • Man, dat song puts me in the feeeeeeels

          • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

I think Lee Douglas is a great singer. It would be interesting to hear an Anathema album with her handling all the vocals

          • I have deep memories with that album. My wife didn’t liked metal, but when we were engaged I used to show to her this kind of albums made by metal artists with other styles or vibes. She really liked Weather Systems and told me it calm her down, even when she doesn’t know English. It was very cool to show music to her that way!

      • xengineofdeathx

Hot takes: Night is the New Day is actually the second best katatonia album (behind Brave Murder Day), and Anathema was only an ok doom band.

  • theory: when Monster Magnet released “Space Lord” back in 1998, they initially wrote and sung the hook as “space lord motherfucker” and then their producer/record label asked them to take all the swearing out, ‘cuz it would make a great single to play on the radio. since the song was already recorded, Wyndorf went through the audio and replaced every instance of “motherfucker” with “mother mother”… and why do i say this? listen closely to the song and each time he gets to the hook, the first “mother” and the second “mother” sound exactly alike, as if the sound dude copy/paste’d the word over “fucker”.

    • As a 15-year-old in 1998 who liked to hear profanity on records, I was disappointed in that one. At least the Offspring gave me “you stupid dumbshit goddamn motherfucker” to listen to over and over.

      • so you believe my theory? yussssssss

        • Wikipedia does too!

“The line, “Space lord, motherfucker,” was truncated and an echo added to make the song more radio- and TV-friendly (the lyric is heard as “Space lord, mother, mother”), but the vocal rhythm is unchanged, and a band version with the original lyric has never been released. The original lyric can be heard uncensored on the “Intergalactic 7 Remix” on international releases of the aforementioned Greatest Hits album and also on the unofficial Boys Noize “Monster Bootnet” remix.”

LOL, Boyz Noize “Monster Bootnet” remix.

          • omigosh. that’s the confirmation i needed from something i theorized about 19 years ago. you don’t know how much that means!

      • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

Me too. When I was a kid, I bought the album, heard the song and thought “why is it censored? It has a PA sticker on the front, and there is swearing in other songs”. I didn’t know the story behind the “mother mother”

    • Lone Biker…

We always just sang it as “space lord motherfucker” when it came out, and I even remember the radio stations bleeping out the second “mother”, which I think reinforced the idea that it actually was what we think it originally was.

  • Jake is a handsome fella. If Therion would like to hire me, I too have photoshop and 3 hours of learning annex design skill.
