TMP: Revocation, Gorguts, Kvelertak, and More!

Now that the snakes have been driven away from the homeland, it is time to get back to what really matters. Metal and potatoes.

The Covenant in Montreal is looking fiiiiine.

Here’s a pretty decent looking festival coming up in Norway, if you’re into a very specific subset of the genre.

Atmospheric black metal band Amiensus released a song off their upcoming album.

Ulver released a poppy track off their next album that will be out in April. As a fan of  Shadows of the Sun, this may be a little too much on that side of things, but it’s not bad.

  • Elegant Gazing Globe

John Arch era FW >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>all other FW

    • Sid Vicious Promos

I hope that Fates Warning does another US tour soon. They usually come to my area on those tours and I’d love to see them.

      • Dumpster Lung

Same here. I’ve never seen them either. I loved the John Arch stuff (especially Guardian), but it wasn’t until much later that I checked out the rest. I do like a lot of that stuff too, but I still haven’t spent nearly enough time with it.

        • Sid Vicious Promos

I actually liked No Exit and Perfect Symmetry a lot. Awaken The Guardian is their best album though.

          • Dumpster Lung

Yeah, I remember liking No Exit pretty well, and even some of the more recent stuff, but I caught myself up on the post-Arch stuff mainly by marathonning a bunch at once, so it was good, but I don’t really remember which albums I liked more than others, aside from earlier stuff.

  • Sid Vicious Promos

I guess I’ll have to see the new Power Rangers movie so I can hear the Revocation song. I’m really excited for it.

    • Depechemodeisgangsta

For the song or the movie?

      • Sid Vicious Promos

        Both.

    • CyberneticOrganism

Sounds like a fantastic waste of $20 and two hours.

  • Rain Poncho W.

Brodequin and Ascended Dead both at California Deathfest? *swoon*

  • Sid Vicious Promos

If Danzig actually does a tour for Danzig 3 I’d pay to see that. I won’t be buying the new album as Skeletons was bad enough to make me not want to listen to a new Danzig album.

  • Howard Dean

Anniversary tour for Danzig III would be fucking awesome. Gonna be a dirty black summer!

  • TrundleTheGreat

Ooooo new Vallenfyre is gonna be nice to hear.

  • Al Bvndy

I found out today that Monster Manget are in the UK in May. Also, this is going down next month:
    http://www.terrorizer.com/terrorizerwordpress/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Ritual-2017-poster-600.jpg

    • Count_Breznak

      Weird lineup

      • Al Bvndy

I don’t think so. It’s all in keeping with grind, death and doom. I didn’t realise that I posted the old version. Have a look at this:
        http://www.ritualfest.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/A3-Poster-Ritual-Announcement3-1.jpg

        • Count_Breznak

Looks more coherent…can’t say I would have expected Ihsahn and Afternoon Gentlemen on the same bill, tho.

          • Al Bvndy

Yeah fair point. TBH I think the inclusion of the Gents is because they are local (Leeds).
I went to see Wormrot last month. It was organised by the same people and AG were also direct support.

        • Dave Vincent’s Perm

I’m going to the continent on that weekend fml

          • Al Bvndy

Oh yeah? Up to anything good?

          • Dave Vincent’s Perm

            Mainly not seeing Anaal Nathrakh.

  • Señor Jefe El Rossover

Karmaggedon line up is all over the place.

    Danzig news is excite.

Will be checking out that Bardspec.

    • Sid Vicious Promos

That lineup is good. Saxon is on it as well as well as Dark Tranquility and Ross The Boss.

      • Señor Jefe El Rossover

        Yeah, I read it.

    • PostBlackenedWhaleGaze

Anyone else notice that band Primal Fear looks like they straight up ripped Primordial’s font?

      • CyberneticOrganism

I’ve seen at least two other bands use that same font; it’s like a second-tier Algerian

  • RustyShackleford

Mastodon song + video is GOOD!!!! YEP!

  • Dumpster Lung

So Europe gets Kvelertak opening for Metallica, and for the US it’s Avenged Sevenfold and Volbeat. I suppose those bands DO make sense, but it’s still disappointing. I still haven’t seen Metallica, and that has to happen at least once (they could make nothing but Lulu’s for 10 years and I’d still die full of regret if I didn’t see them play Ride the Lightning live at least once in my lifetime), but UGH (and not the good/CF kind).

Not coming through Nashville at all (why the hell not, by the way?) and on top of that, openers I really don’t give 2 shits about? Kinda makes me not very excited to shell out the cost of tickets and drive 4-ish hrs.

    • Joaquin Stick

      Would skip/10

    • Hans Copronym

Oh yeah… it never occured to me that we have to clarify our UGHs now. Ugh… thanks, Toilet.

      • Señor Jefe El Rossover

        “ugh…” = bad
        “UGH!” = TOM G WARRIOR

        • Hans Copronym

Advanced: transition from one to the other

“u- fuck it, time to stop moping and start moshing -GH!!”

          • Señor Jefe El Rossover

            PUGHRFECT!

          • Dumpster Lung

Quick, somebody with more drive and skill than myself photoshop old Tom G Warrior eye makeup onto a pug.

    • tigeraid

What can you say, they know their audience over here. Volbeat is basically (later) Metallica with Elvis singing.

      • Buuuuuuuuurn!

      • Sid Vicious Promos

I saw Volbeat once with Trivium. They weren’t bad.

        • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

I actually like Volbeat. They are far from amazing, but for mainstream metal, you could do a lot worse

          • Dumpster Lung

Yeah I don’t hate ’em, but I don’t know if I’d go see ’em live or not. They might actually be a lot better live. The little bit of their stuff I’ve heard did have some riffs, the production and dominance of the vocals just softened the effect.

But they alone aren’t incentive to travel, at least not for me.

      • Dumpster Lung

hahaha very true. I don’t hate Volbeat, but I just don’t get any excitement out of ’em. If it weren’t for requiring travel and nobody else wanting to even see Metallica again in the first place, I’d probably still go. I’m just gonna hope they come back through town, or come nearby again with exciting enough opening acts to make it worthwhile for others I know.

I might stalk their setlists and try to do something last-minute, but it’s not super likely.

        • tigeraid

Volbeat ain’t bad. Just that their tunes ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL sound the same.

      • Pierre Generic

Volbeat’s pretty much replaced Godsmack as the band of choice for the coal rolling, Monster Energy Drink swilling, Tapout/Ed Hardy wearing, MMA/UFC tough guy wannabe BDubs Bros.

    • RustyShackleford

I feel exactly the same way. I had friends who saw them in high school and, if I remember correctly (big if!), Lamb of God was supporting. Not everyone’s favorite in the Toilet but still obviously so much better than A7X and Volbeat. I’ve never seen them either and bad openers + ticket $$$ + driving distance is keeping me away. SAD!

      • Dumpster Lung

Yeah, Gojira opened, then Lamb of God, then Metallica. That was right after Death Magnetic, and I was sooooo broke at the time. I wanna say that time of year I was working for a guy making slightly less than minimum wage, but getting paid cash, so it wasn’t taxed, but gas got so expensive I essentially broke even lol.

My mom ended up going to that show, though. Still jealous, hahaha

      • Al Bvndy

I would happily take Volbeat over Shinedown, who are opening for Maiden this year. Needless to say I’ll be at the bar during their set.

    • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

By now, I’d rather see Kvelertak than Metallica again.

      • CyberneticOrganism

        Dadtallica

      • Dumpster Lung

I saw them once, and they themselves were really good, but the experience was kind of dulled by the setup. They opened for Mastodon fall of 2014, but the sound wasn’t particularly loud, and in a decently large space, it felt like their energy just didn’t come across as well as it would’ve had they either cranked the sound a lot more, or just played in a smaller venue. Some sound guys seem to keep the openers a bit quieter, then crank things up a bit for the headliner.

I really want to see them headline or open for a band that can still play a dive-ier kind of place, though.

        • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Kvelertak’s not at their best on a huge stadium for certain.

          • Dumpster Lung

I could see it working if a crowd that size was into them enough, but here that just wouldn’t be possible. The venue I saw them in is basically a big warehouse sort of building with a stage, so it’s very open, but if they sound isn’t cranked up, it actually feels a bit quiet, to the point I don’t think I wore earplugs or anything.

      • NDG

        I have never seen Metallica.

I was 13 when they first came to Australia in ’89 so the chances of me going that show were virtually zero. They were THEE band for me back then but I feel like I missed a great opportunity and I really have no interest in seeing them now.

    • Depechemodeisgangsta

I never seen Metallica live, but for this tour i was able to get a ticket, looking forward to seeing them live, most likely i will skip the openings bands, never been into Volbeat but i haven’t give their music a fair listen, and Avenged doesn’t do much for me.

      • Dumpster Lung

I’m kind of on the fence. If it was at least right here I’d definitely do it, but being a 4 or 5 hour drive no matter where I want to see them is kind of a deterrent when nobody else I know is real stoked to go haha. Anyone who would normally go has had the chance to see ’em before, and with a better lineup at that, so it’s not really justifiable for anyone else 😛

        • Depechemodeisgangsta

Well for me is actually great since they are playing about 15 minutes away from me, but traffic will probably be pain in ass, so i will probably just do my regular stuff, and get there about 8 Pm, since that show probably will end early, since i believed they have a curfew in that stadium.

          • Dumpster Lung

That’s awesome. Definitely a no-brainer in that scenario!

  • tigeraid

Anyone listened to any of that Memoriam yet? I am so let down by it. Bolt Thrower with absolutely none of the effort or passion. Or emotion at all really.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nmucoieg2Lc

    • slow and groovy (slightly repetitive) but the riffs were gud. i wonder if they could have remedied all issues by including a few tempo changes (like in the song Resistance)?

      • tigeraid

Well yeah, that was my thought. It was just so… flat.

    • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Couple of the songs were cool, couple less so. Finna check the new reccid, but hoping they pull themselves by the bootstraps for the sophomore (this was admittedly a very rushed record. They began as a “cover-band-by-friends” and we’re already releasing their debut a couple of months later.)

  • Holy cow, that Covenant show in Montreal looks like it was Toilet sponsored or something!
    Thanks for the noose, Stick!

    • Señor Jefe El Rossover

      Blazingsaddles.gif

      • Ah Blazing Saddles: the Deadwood of the 70’s

        • Señor Jefe El Rossover

          wut

        • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

          Except excellent.

  • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

New Vallenfyre is gnus I’d like to use.
Not sure Karmageddon is that specific a fest, seems to be enough diversity for a fest of that size.

    • Joaquin Stick

True, I guess I didn’t mean that it’s very genre specific. More that it would appeal to some quite a bit, and others might think it’s total lolbuttz.

      • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

        Ohhhhhh, I can see that.

  • Sid Vicious Promos

In other news Bob Dylan is touring. He’s coming to a new venue in my area. I almost ran out of tears when i read it from weeping so violently. Anyway I’m off to get register training from Old Navy. I’ll be back.

    • Howard Dean
    • Depechemodeisgangsta

He came down here in South FL a couple of years ago, i couldn’t get a ticket for the show, but from what i heard, people were pissed because he didn’t play the “Hits” since he was promoting his last album, and that his voice wasn’t that good, but i think is worth checking him out, too bad that tour isn’t coming down near here.

      • Sid Vicious Promos

I saw him in 2010 and i couldn’t understand him at all. I’d see him again.

      • atchdav

Bob Dylan has arthritis in his hands so he plays keyboard instead of guitar now. I saw him a few years back and people were pissed he didn’t play his greatest hits and that he had rearranged the composition of the hits he did play. I enjoyed myself and would definitely see him again.

        • Depechemodeisgangsta

Oh man i didn’t know that, too bad the place that he played down here was a small venue so tickets were too much $ for me, but if i ever have the chance i would love to see him live.

  • CyberneticOrganism

Danzig and The Motherfucking Bricks Bitch

  • Doom Scientist

BTW, the new Mastodon has 2-3 decent songs, but is otherwise quite mediocre.
You didn’t hear it here. #leak

  • The Tetrachord of Archytas

With a name like Bardspec how could it not be dungeon synth?

    • JWG79

I can neither find bard nor spec in a norwegian-english dictionary, but I assume it means “Beard Speech”.

  • Old Man Doom

Stoked for Bardspec. I’ve always loved the atmospheric side of Enslaved. Also, eagerly awaiting news about how they are going to proceed without Herbrand Larsen on keys. Supposedly a new album is in the works, but I’ll be curious to see who they recruit for live shows.

  • Dave Vincent’s Perm

Ordered a dragged into sunlight longsleeve

  • Waynecro

I’d really like to see Danzig live one of these days. I’ve met him a bunch of times, but I’ve never been able to see him in concert. That Scale the Summit song jams. I dig it! Thanks, JS!

    • how’d you meet Danzig? and what was he like?

      • Waynecro

Danzig had a booth for his publishing company at the SD Comic Con most years back in the day, though he was sort of incognito–that is, his badge didn’t say “Glenn Danzig.” We used to bump into him a lot when we were just walking around and looking at stuff.

        • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

Was he nice? He comes off as kind of a douche sometimes, but who knows? Maybe he’s cool if you catch him in the right mood

          • Waynecro

He was always super cool to us. He even took a photo with us at his booth, despite his trying to keep a low profile. We were probably bugging him, but he never acted like a dick or anything. We were young (probably ages 12 and 15) and just super psyched to meet him, even though he was there for comics-business stuff pertaining to comics we were too young to read at the time.

          • who do you think could benchpress more: you or Danzig?

          • Waynecro

            Danzig, because he’s fucking Danzig!

          • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

That’s awesome, man! I’m glad he’s a cool dude. He gets a lot of shit for completely asinine things, like the whole stopping shows because someone is recording with a cellphone thing, which is something I wish more artists would do, because that shit is annoying

          • Waynecro

Meeting Danzig all those years ago was pretty awesome–I mean, that shit blew our minds when we were kids. I’m just glad an experience I remember, like, 18 years later was a positive one.
