Nine concerts I’ve been to and one lie: 9 bands no one on my friends list has ever heard of and The Beatles.

Full Of Hell have a video out for the title track of Trumpeting Ecstasy.

Decapitated announced a release date of July 7 for their upcoming album Anticult and released a video.

Vintersorg!

Progressive death-ish metal band Exist released a new track. There are some people in this band, including Hannes Grossman and Max Phelps (Cynic).

As resident Iced Earth Nut, I’m cautiously optimistic. The two singles released so far are really letting Stu stretch his legs.

      • RepostedAvengedSevenfoldFan2

they r the best 😀 i love the guitaring in this song

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I’m “that guy” who strolls about telling everyone – whenever Iced Earth comes up – that the band is dead to him after Burnt Offerings – which has more to do with how terrific Night of the Stormrider and Burn Offerings were.

…but this new song ain’t horrible.

        • Dumpster Lung

Same here. Night of the Stormrider is the only one I really revisit much, and even then that’s more rare than it ought to be.

I like this guy’s voice, and the song isn’t bad, but unless it’s just a lull in the middle of the album before things kick back into gear, I don’t think I could get excited for a whole album of that.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I revisit Burnt Offerings a bit more than Stormrider, but both rule. I miss that dark, gloomy, mystical vibe they had on those albums.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ebDDy-XJAM

          • Dumpster Lung

Somehow I actually missed the song they mentioned in the actual article (I think my brain just saw “Power Metal” and immediately dismissed everything that came after), but after hearing that one, I’m definitely gonna pass 🙁

          • Dumpster Lung

Also, that album really was kickass musically, but I always missed the crazy high screams of the guy before Barlow, whose name I can never remember for some reason.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Greely. I always kinda roll my eyes when I read a review for Burnt Offerings where the following statement is made: “Iced Earth finally got a good vocalist.”

            :I

Greely was great and fit the sound on Stormrider perfectly. Barlow is the superior vocalist imo, but I really don’t get why so many call Greely “bad”.

          • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

I don’t think Greely’s bad, but he’s vary “casual” for a vocalist. Barlow had much more persona so I see why people go there, although I think they should have stuck with Gene Adam, at least for a while, who really should have taken those singing lessons.

          • Dumpster Lung

Yes, Greely. That’s right! Yeah, Barlow might be technically better, but a little less exciting, I guess. Not that he’s bad at all, but that intensity on Stormrider is great.

        • tigeraid

          Frank pl–wait wha?

          Blessings upon you.

      • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

I wouldn’t go there. More like he’s being forced to do a Barlow impression and Jon is quite clearly writing his melodies for him.
Yet, I remain cautiously optimistic as well. Both of these are on the good side.

        • tigeraid

Eeeeeeh just because he’s going ballad-ey doesn’t mean he’s being “forced” to do Barlow. Besides, after seeing him do Barlow’s ballads live, he needed some work, frankly.

But sure Jon’s writing them. He’s a control freak, it’s gonna happen. Won’t know for sure ’til we hear it all. The last two albums for me were like, there’s some killer tunes on both these albums, but put them together as albums and there’s no structure, no cohesion.

          • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Both songs have him do Barlow. Have you heard him elsewhere? He’s def doing a Barlow. He’s “done Barlow” for most of his IE tenure, although since Jon’s always had a hand in the melodies, I guess “doing Jon” would be fairer, but it’s a style associated with Barlow.

I liked Dystopia, it wasn’t great, but good. On plagues Stu was really worn, and most of the songs just weren’t good. I don’t hate it tho.

    • Sid Vicious Promos

      Yay!

  • Wet W’s Whistle

I saw Decapitated like 5 years ago, and the singer (who was relatively new at the time), struck me as more of a nu metal frontman than a death metal guy. I like Carnival is Forever but thought Blood Mantra was painfully boring. I dunno if this new album is going to be for me.

    • Joaquin Stick

Is it the dreads? For me it’s the dreads.

      • Wet W’s Whistle

That was definitely part of it.

    • Lone Biker of the Apocalypse

I’m with ya…I just recently revisited their first two albums, and almost twenty years later they still hold up extremely well – I know Winds… is pretty untouchable, but I was surprised how great Nihility holds up – so many scorchers!

As sad as this is, I always feel like I owe this band a little more time and energy, simply because of the tragedy of their bus accident. I still can’t believe that Vitek was only 15 and 17 when he recorded those two albums. I listen to those two and fantasize about how Decapitated in 2017 would sound without the accident.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KZQNxWjgao

      • Wet W’s Whistle

Right. You really can’t blame them for not sounding like the same band after what happened.

      • drug_genosh

spheres of madness is hands down their best song and probably somewhere in my top 5 metal songs…but I honestly think this is their weakest ALBUM (pre vitek DAH)

    • drug_genosh

just here to brag that I got to see decapitated on their O.H. tour w/ necrophagist back when Vitek was above ground (rip): they ripped (not R.I.P.ped) and that’s how ill choose to remember them. Also, I think the negation is severely underrated and its almost criminal how people brush over it. Sure, not as flashy as the albums before or after, but the Negation is a pummeling plate of steak & potato technical death with an extra serving of steak on top.

  • Joaquin Stick

I’m not sure how I’ve never checked out Vintersorg before. I really like this new song. Any fans out there that can give me an album rec?

    • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Til Fjälls is a tad more black-ish than this, but a classic for a reason. Though I feel anything off of the element series (Orkan, Jordpuls and Naturbål) may be more of your thing. He hasn’t made a bad album in any band really, but some are better than others.

      • Joaquin Stick

Good to know. I wouldn’t mind it a little more blackened.

        • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I second Til Fjälls. That’s the one Vintersorg album that floats my boat the most.

        • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Ödemarken’s Son and the EP are in the same vein too.

  • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

    Here’s some of my crappy opinions on some the matters discussed above;

    * Looking forward to the new Full of Hell album, though I feel they won’t surpass the debut. The debut was a seamless mixture of sludgy grind, hardcore, death metal with some slight experimental noise touches and I feel they’re beginning to toss aside the hardcore influence in their music a tad too much.

    * New Decapitated song bores me…again. I realize they’re not the same band anymore, but their later approach just isn’t working for me.

    * Vintersorg and Exist both getting the meh-reaction from me.

    * “Looking forward” to being underwhelmed by another new Baroness album.

    * ^ Ditto for Arsis.

    * New Municipal Waste? No, grazie.

    * Surprise! New The Acacia Strain song is complete ass.

    * letlive. disbanding? Good riddance.

My apologies for being a miserable, negative prick. Thanks for reading.

I saw Letlive once. They were very intense live. I’ll miss them. Also I met Vincent Bennett from The Acacia Strain once. He was a very nice guy which is a complete reversal of his stage persona.

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Don’t have anything against those people on a personal level. Music’s just not my cup of tea.

        • Sid Vicious Promos

I see where you’re coming from.

        • Dumpster Lung

Yeah, I’ve never liked Acacia Strain either, but just from a musical standpoint as well.

    • Elegant Gazing Globe

      Bravo

    • Dumpster Lung

I haven’t kept up with Decapitated, so I can’t really comment on how their stuff’s progressed over the years, aside from how this one sounds compared to the one album of theirs I’ve heard a fair amount, Nihility, but is it weird I almost kept expecting a clean chorus to suddenly pop out of nowhere?

Maybe it’s the dude’s Shadows Fall dreads 😛

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

They’ve definitely gone into a more NWOAHM-direction on their albums following the terrible bus accident. For me it’s always been Winds of Creation all the way.

There are a very few select cases where I think that the whole “NWOAHM” movement created a worthwhile album, but the majority of it is a snoozefest to me – like for instance Shadows Fall…

        • CyberneticOrganism
          • Sid Vicious Promos

            Only NWOBHM is real.

          • Sir Ukkometso The Based

Fuck you, NWOFHM is the best

        • Dumpster Lung

I’ve always liked them a bit more than the rest of that movement, but generally a few songs here and there and that’s about it.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I think Alive or Just Breathing (Killswitch Engage), As the Palaces Burn and Ashes of the Wake (Lamb of God) are great albums, but I think that’s about it.

      • CyberneticOrganism

If they start adding clean choruses, I’m out

        • Dumpster Lung

It wasn’t a bad song, but it kinda felt like that was gonna happen at some point haha.

    • CyberneticOrganism

I can get onboard with new Decapitated; they’ve backed away from the pure death sound and blended more groove into the new albums, but each song still has segments of frantic Vogg riffing that I love so much.

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

To be honest, Decapitated always had groove in their sound, going all the way back to Winds of Creation. Groove is not the problem. As a matter of fact, it was the blend of the death, the groove and the technical in their riffs that always gave them their signature sound.

The problem is that – for some reason – I’m getting somewhat of a Cavalera Conspiracy/Soulfly vibe from the new Decapitated. I’m just not feeling it.

    • Treebeard, Father of Fangorn

Such negativity within you. Are you an agent of the Enemy?

    • Sir Ukkometso The Based

Hey man, there’s nothing wrong with being a miserable, negative prick.

    • GoatForest

I’m just surprised Schammasch is releasing another album so soon. Regardless, I’m down.

      • Major Zim

Same as fuuuuuck. Contradiction was rough around the edges but full of fantastic moments, and Triangle really cemented them to me as one of the premiere bands in the oversaturated blackened death metal scene today. I really don’t understand why they don’t have more love.

    • drug_genosh

is there any good decapitated post-“organic”? ive tried and ive tried but I cant get past a song or two. I put full blame on the “nu” singer who completely changed the vibe in the worst way. the original bassist & singer are still alive…getting them back are the only way to salvage this band. *sigh*

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Personally I wasn’t even that fond of Organic anymore. Winds of Creation was a masterstroke, Nihility wasn’t as good as Winds but still a good album…it was all downhill from there on.

        • drug_genosh

I agree with you on Nihility (and sadly Organic too, rarely listen to that one anymore) but I noticed your synopsis is oddly missing any mention of the Negation! I would rank that over both nihility & organic

    • Jimmy Calhoun

Isn’t the new Full of Hell actually their third LP? They’ve already had ‘Rudiments of Mutilation’ and ‘Roots of Earth…’ Either way, more FoH is always a good thing. 🙂

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Yep, the new one is their third.

  • HessianHunter

Here’s a new Aziza video/song. I am the blonde longhair in this video looking much drunker than one would expect at 4 PM http://www.nocleansinging.com/2017/04/26/an-ncs-double-premiere-aziza-imposter-and-the-mana-razor-video/

    • Joaquin Stick

“The blonde longhair” sounds like a horse description. Fun video, dig the music.

  • That Full of Hell song kinda sounds like intro/outro/interlude stuff aka filler. Why do a music vid for something like that?

    • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

‘Cause they think it’s a banger, most likely.

      • My definition of a banger differs from theirs I guess. Should have some semblance of a song – drums, vocals and guitars throughout. That sort of thing.

        • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

I just listened and I don’t really get why they chose that song either, smh.

I’m not sure but i think Live Nation has a deal with Groupon, i have bought tickets for some of the shows, and at very good price since they’re are either lawn or the last floor on arena, but still good deals, i bought 2 lawn tickets for deftones for $40.00 on Live nation same lawn tickets price for 2 was around $88.00
That’s why i always check those Groupon concert, they have same good $ on tickets.
I saw Depeche mode on their last tour and it was amazing, i already got my tickets for September show, hopefully we don’t get a Hurricane since that time is peak hurricane season, and i’m not talking college football.

That new RoF is a terrible way to preview a new singer, especially considering it’s already an album of re-recorded classics.

    • It’s awful. The song choicing wasn’t the correct, the mix is OMG LET’S TURN UP CHOIRS AND KEYBOARDS. It’s bad.

      • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

  • Waynecro

VINTERSORG!!! That Exist song is pretty swell, though I don’t love all the clean vocals. I am also interested in news about Baroness, Cellar Darling, O’Brother, Tombs, God Dethroned, Arsis, and Hate. Thanks, JS!

  • Jimmy Calhoun

The Vintersorg track sounds nice and everything – don’t know enough to compare it to previous efforts – but it also illustrates many of the issues I have with contemporary, bigger-label metal as a whole. Spit-and-polished digital production, overall bland, sterile vibe, and not so much a unique, progressive fusion of genres (which Vintersorg and their ilk are reputedly known for) as a faceless mishmash of several popular styles. I still want to give them a chance though. Recommendations from their back catalog, anyone?

Yay, yet another God Dethroned album… I like ‘The Grand Grimoire’ and all, but it’s hard to be enthusiastic about these guys in 2017.

In the “guilty pleasure” department, I must admit I’m mildly stoked about new Acacia Strain. They epitomize the bro-ish, beatdown side of the deathcore genre, which is maybe why I prefer them to most bands of their type – because they’re so unabashed and no-bullshit about what they do, that the lack of self-consciousness winds up being a positive. Similar to why I, er… “don’t hate” Emmure as much as a lot of folks do.
