The Monday Press brings you all the news you need for the week. You don’t need any more news than this, you pig.

This is a mostly non-metal festival in CA, but Sleep will be there?

Here’s a new Paradise Lost song. The last one was kinda odd, right? Well, this one is <insert opinion here when I get a chance to listen to it>.

That song is, in my opinion at least, by far the worst track on the new PL album.

Make of that what you will.

    • Joaquin Stick

Finally got a chance to listen, yeah I didn’t enjoy that very much.

  • Elegant Gazing Globe

Fuck if the tribe only moved the Rev Rock venue into Guy’s Kitchen & Bar it might have worked out!

    • Joaquin Stick

      Five Finger Donkey Sauce.

      • Brutalist_Receptacle

Guy Fieri prefers Five Finger Donkey Punch.

  • Howard Dean

Seeing Sleep perform Holy Mountain in its entirety would be pretty kewl. Dunno what I would do for the rest of that fest, though. Maybe burn the corpse of a famous country-rock artist out in the desert or something.

Well, there’s Boris and King Woman. At first I thought The Jesus Lizard was gonna be there but I read wrong, it’s some other band with “Lizard” in their name

      • Howard Dean

        Boris is pretty kewl, too.

I like this new Paradise Lost song better than the first one they released for the new album. Can do without the video portion, though.

jesus. ill forever be a rhythm guitarist simply because my dang ol’ fingers just don’t move all fast like ‘n stuff.
side note: im noticing more guitars with the slanted frets-what gives? is this for playability? intonation? (too lazy to look up myself)

      • Brutalist_Receptacle

Multiple scales BABY! Also, comfort, control, ergonomics, intonation…

      • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

The fanning fretboard is mostly because of dropped tunings. A lot of these bands are tuning down to B, or A, or even lower, so the guitar needs to have a longer neck or else the strings (even the heavy gauge ones) will feel like spaguetti. However, some people don’t like how the frets are more separated on longer necks and they have to open their hand wider to play. That is why they slant the frets like that; so the lower strings can intonate properly and they can solo on the higher strings more easily, as if it were a normal scale guitar.

        • Max

Cheers for that! I always just thought it was the camera angle on these things.

It’s funny; earlier this year I was going to get a baritone 6-string guitar custom built for my band (I tune to A). Me and the builder went through a lot of planning about the materials, shape, neck length; you name it. And yet I honestly don’t remember him mentioning anything about fanned frets. Or if he did, I’m pretty sure we settled on conventional ones.

          • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

I played a guitar with a fanned fretboard once, and I couldn’t for the life of me play a power chord. Same thing with scalloped fret necks. Can’t play those things at all. Mind you, I’m not a great guitar player by any stretch of the imagination.

From what I’ve heard, it is complicated to make fanned fretboards. It’s a relatively new building technique, so not many people know how to make them. Maybe that’s why your luthier didn’t mention it at all.

          • Max

Possibly, yeah. But by what you’ve described, it sounds pretty optional anyway. This guy also fixed my Ibanez S-470 to play tuned down at A really nicely, even though that’s a model of guitar that’s really only designed to be played at Standard. So I’m pretty sure that whatever he built would have been fine, fanned frets or not.

          • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

Yup, I have a Jackson Rhoads with a 25.5″ neck that I tune to B with no problem (I didn’t even had to get it set up, just slapped some 0.12 strings on it and it was good to go)

And not to mention all those doom and stoner bands that have been downtuning the shit out of their normal scale Les Pauls and SGs for decades

  • Street Sects? Sounds pornish.

    • It is.

    • Dumpster Lung

First time hearing them, but that album from last year is pretty sweet.

Ok damn, thought I was crazy for thinking their last album JUST came out, but it was just one year ago. Not that crazy after all 😛

Anyway, I’m sure this will be great.

Also, new Bell Witch coming out. Cover art’s online, but my computer’s being a dick and not letting me post it. Google it.
