This Toilet Tuesday (9/29/15)

Behold: Toilet Tuesday! As we enter October, that most metal of months, we can expect to see new music flowing as freely through our eager earholes as pumpkin spice flows through the veins of basically every white American girl from September to January. Though the lists stretch longer with each night, we will never cease in our quest to bring them to you. Because you clearly don’t have enough to catch up on already. Have at it, toileteers!

Death Dealer – Hallowed Ground (SMG Records) [Power Metal]
Listen to “Plan of Attack”

This is some Grade-A stinky power metal cheese, but I dig it. Falsetto vocals soar above blaster beam riffs like vengeful robot eagles intent on bringing death from above in their thunderous, unrelenting charge. Thankfully, Death Dealer seem aware of how ridiculous this all is, but that only lends the music more credence. This certainly won’t be for everyone, but it’s a fun romp through the more sci-fi spectrum of dragon-bangery. FFO: Judicator, ShadowStrike, Twilight Force 10/2/15 (W.)

Borgne – Règne des morts (Those Opposed Records) [Industrial/Black Metal]
Listen to “Void Miasma”

If the spoopy sci-fi effects at the beginning are any indication, Borgne are intent on dragging you into the cold, lifeless void of outer space. I’d like to hear the rest of the album before I judge how successfully they manage to knock us out of orbit, but “Void Miasma” is certainly promising. The gene-splicing between the synths and frozen comet chords has stolen my supply of oxygen, and that constant asteroid belt percussive pummel has left my life-support capsule badly damaged. Too bad you can’t hear me screaming. FFO: Darkspace, Wolok, Aborym 9/28/15 (W.)

Gravsang – La dine Taarer livet Begrave (Pest Productions) [Doom/Depressive]

Well-made and -produced black metal leaning on the depressive side. The doomier parts and acoustic sections add variation, which is often desired but rarely delivered in this kind of music. Songwriting remains consistent throughout without the album becoming a faceless mass. I’d like to say more better things about this but I haven’t quite wrapped myself around it yet. Look for a review, or not. 9/30/15 (Karhu)

Saurom – Sueños (Maldito Records) [lolbuttz]
Listen to “Sueños Perdidos”

This was tagged lolbuttz, I suppose it deserved it. If you don’t mind casual, harmless rock music with a Śpaniard singing about stuffs in his native language this could be for you. Except that Saurom doesn’t offer casual, harmless rock. Sure, the basis of their sound is the same as any radio rock band but the focus is on the flutes, accordions, violins and whatnots. Playing the folk-music card gives them quite a big advantage over most “radio rock” bands I’ve had the displeasure of hearing this year. That and my Mexican is a little rusty so the lyrics can’t bother me. And based on my limited knowledge of the language (and the videos) I’m happier that way. 10/2/15 (Karhu)

temple of baal

Temple of Baal – Mysterium (Agonia Records) [Blackened Death]
Listen to “Divine Scythe”

I come across a lot of death metal bands that try to add that blackened twist to their sound and fall flat on their faces doing it. The problem is they’re trying too hard; it seems like you either have it, or you don’t. Temple of Baal is not one of those bands. “Divine Scythe” brings the drop-tuned riffage with the ghastly delivery of a seasoned orthodox black metal band. It is black. It is death. It is evil in the best way. 10/2/15 (Spear)

  • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

I’ve heard good things about the new Satan.

  • Stryper, W.A.S.P., and Queensryche all have new albums?

    • KJM, Doom Hunter General

Unlike Stryper and WASP, Queensryche actually have a chance to be semi-relevant again.

      • uh-oh, don’t let certain three-letter acronym named folks hear that!

        • JOEs?

        • KJM, Doom Hunter General

Me & him will agree to disagree on that one.

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

I think JJM was referring to someone else whose jimmies get easily rustled at criticism of WASP.

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

I would have guessed but it does somewhat apply to me. I get pretty angry when people insult them but that’s because of how they impacted my life and I can’t stand people that badmouth them just because Blackie doesn’t look the way he used to.

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

Blackie was a dick to some friends of mine so I have my issues with him.

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

Even if he was a dick to me I’d still worship the ground he walks on. That’s how much of an impact him and WASP had on me.

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

Nah, you treat me or my friends badly, especially one that wasn’t even acknowledging his existence(since she’s a hot girl that was probably the root of the issue) you can fuck off and die. I don’t care if you’re Tony Iommi or Jimmy Page.

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

I completely understand where you’re coming from. I would only be mad at him if he treated two very specific people badly and that’s because they’ve had an extreme impact on me as well, those two people being my two best friends who are also girls.

          • I’d cry if I met Page or Iommi and they treated me badly. No shit.

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

I heard Tony Iommi isn’t the nicest guy from someone who I knew. She was a tour dancer for Black Sabbath who I knew from college.

          • Well, you have to also remember that everyone has bad days. I’m sure we’ve all left a lasting impression on others based on one encounter when we didn’t have our morning cup of coffee or heroin fix.

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

            That is true.

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

OTOH, I don’t think I’ve ever met a public figure with more patience for his fan base than Lemmy, such a nice guy. 100% class.

          • Did you get a chance touch his mole? pls rspnd

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

No, I did not. I just shook his hand.

          • Just think… you touched the hand of Lemmy… the hand which at some point that day likely touched his wanker… and… his mole.

You cannot go wrong with that assessment!

          • lol! i also imagine playing your heart out takes a toll every now and then

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

            Co-signed. I’d be devastated.

          • Based Pingu

I wouldn’t wanna meet Page. He’d probably steal all my shit.

          • …but Qorthon OTOH…or some other underground “pioneer” that nobody gave two shits about until much later.

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

I always though it was odd that Zeppelin I gave all proper credit where it was due in it’s liner notes(based on my vinyl copy from 1975), but Zeppelin II didn’t.

          • Page was more honest about the “borrowing” than Plant was. As much as I like Plant he came off as a real douche sometimes.

Remember how he could never shut up about eighties bands whose vocalists even bore a passing resemblance to his style? “David Coverversion,” as he always called him, had a far better range than Plant did. (I think he called him that crap because he replaced Gillan in Deep Purple. Gillan left and acted like they had no right to continue without him…even though he wasn’t there original singer either.)

          • #toiletconfession

When I met GL in real life, he came off as a prick. Then when we asked for a second photograph with him… he flipped off the camera 🙁

          • Basically I am still devastated….

          • Maik Beninton™

          • 🙁

Now we don’t know which is the prick GL and the good GL!

          • So in the end, as punishment for him being a asshat, I buy literally every piece of music he releases.

            I’ll SHOW HIM

          • YEAH, BRO!

          • You are fucking hilarious Link. Don’t ever change

          • oh no! i’d be devastated if the real Jimmy McNulty did something like that

          • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

after the MS migration mcnulty became and elitist….

          • That sucks. I remember Alex Webster not looking like he really wanted to take a pic but I think it was because he just wanted to BS with us about old school heavy metal and not be treated like a big rock star.

          • Totes met him during the Conquering Dystopia tour. He was pretty nice!

          • Based Pingu

I don’t hate them because Blackie looks like shit. I hate them because their music sounds like shit.

          • Another wonderful reason to “hate.”

          • My one buddy plays guitar in a cover band here in town. He just got the band to cover a couple of WASP songs. I’m not sure which ones honestly though. I guess I’ll have to wait and find out this weekend and let you know.

          • I’m guessing “Wild Child” will be one of them.

          • Most likely that one and I Wanna Be Somebody.

          • Actually they haven’t released anything “relevant” to me for a really long time. …but I still listen to everything I used to listen to. Music, like all art, is timeless. When I hear the word “relevant” applied to a band I’m either wondering if they deliver the daily news through song or if I”m supposed to be all pose-out hip to some new trend.

My jimmies only get rustled when dumb fucking dumbfucks make fun of people for getting old and looking like it.

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

I definitely agree. People shouldn’t insult people just because they got old. Everyone gets old and it rustles my jimmies that people call Blackie fat and say he looks like the lady from Heart.

          • Not “everyone” gets old. Some people age well but most don’t. It’s better than the alternative. I’d rather have a fat ugly Blackie than a dead one.

Dio didn’t look so hot when he got old and everyone still rightly loved him. I’m sure there were some worthless little pieces of shit talking crap online about him too.

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

Honesty, apart from the receding hairline, I thought Dio looked great for his age, especially considering that when I saw him in 2009 he was probably already dealing with Cancer.

          • Dio is one person I really wish I could’ve met. My seventeen year old daughter is a huge fan too. If I see her with headphones on and ask her what she’s listening to there’s a 75% chance it’s either a Dio-fronted band or Alice Cooper.

          • I thought he looked alright. Dio always looks like a god to me.

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

When I speak of “relevance” I usually mean that a band has the chance to expand their audience beyond their already established fan base or release material with the same quality as their classic albums. Rush comes readily to mind as the perfect example.

I’m 48 years old. I could give two fucks about trends. I like what I like. If that happens to be trendy at the time then whatever. I don’t lose sleep about whether or not people think I should act my age.

          • You’re the first person who’s actually given me a non-bullshit definition of what you mean by relevance in this respect. Thank you.

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

            You’re welcome.

          • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

but wait isn’t relevant only applicable to me personal taste?

          • The way most people use that word to describe a band I’d say yeah. Otherwise all the Bandcamp Metal Bands they whack off to would be even less “relevant” with their twelve paid downloads.

      • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

Stryper isn’t relevant to me though they did a great cover of After Forever on their new album. WASP will always be relevant in my heart due to the extreme impact they’ve had on my life.

      • My guitarist said he saw them last year and that they were really good. Crazy.

        • KJM, Doom Hunter General

I’m pretty bummed that I had to pass on the Scorpions/QR show. That tour was a major step towards getting QR out of the state fair/chili bakeoff circuit.

          • Chili bakeoffs rule! It’s about that time of year to start making ass burning Chili.

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

I do love chili but they never have those bakeoffs in my area.

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

There are far too many other chances for me to get fat eating tasty food. It’s perhaps best that those don’t show up in my area.

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

They have had them before but my area would be lucky to get a band who is on that circuit for a chili cookoff.

          • Good point.

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

It tends to be the kiss of death/end of the road for many bands though.

I probably shouldn’t eat spicy food anymore, but I still do. I love chili.

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

Not many bands escape the chili bakeoff circuit. Many bands I love are on that circuit as well as the county fair circuit. Most hair metal bands who have lost members are stuck there as well as bands like Foreigner and BOC sadly.

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

At least when they came to Boston in 2013 they played the Hatch Shell. It was a free show but thousands of people showed up for it.

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

            Which band, BOC or Foreigner?

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

            BOC(edited for clarity)

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

They performed a show up in Albany in August but I missed it. Foreigner played my county fair in 2012 but I didn’t know about it.

    • If we could just get a new album from The Turtles then we could be all be happy together.

OT: Scenes from my Monday night.

  • Will check Death Dealer, Trivium, Satan, Children of Bodom and For Today if that freaking connection really helps menenegehubjkgdjbgsdiongiong!

    • Spear

Bodom is pretty much exactly what you’d expect. Trivium’s newest is much more radio friendly than anything else they’ve done, but it’s also much, much better than VF.

      • I’m kinda intrigued with those both bands new records, it’s mostly curiosity.

        • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

People still excited about Bodom? I was never a fan anyway.

          • I listened to them a lot years ago. Not in touch with their current music, to be honest. But, I think they probably still have a fanbase because I saw them in their youtube channel making videos with Q&A from their fans and that kind of stuff.

I want to check it, to see how they progressed, but I’m kinda sure what I would expect.

          • That’s a band that did not age well. Musically and physically.

          • I kinda feel like their music is a safe bet. It is always about the same… it listens well, sounds good, and is enjoyable. Know what I mean?

          • One of the worst performances I’ve ever witnessed. They were all completely out of it on stage. It was obvious that they were all trashed/hungover. They just fucked up song structures, timings, you name it. Even for someone that does not know their songs it was still obvious.

          • Vote for Jeb

I’ve seen them twice. One time was decent, but I got bored the other. They were a gateway band for me, but I never really feel myself going back to listen to them anymore.

          • It was when I was in high school when I saw them. It was on the Unholy Alliance tour with Slayer, Mastodon, and LOG. I’m pretty sure that was around the time that the main dude from Bodom was having some serious substance problems.

          • Vote for Jeb

If I remember correctly, to be inducted into their crew (lol) you have to do a headstand and chug beer until it comes out of your nose. That’s not really promoting healthy consumption.

          • FRAT METAL!!! Hahaha!

Well if I remember correctly the lead guy had some sort of gastric problems from consumption?

          • That’s what happened to me too. I think I can jam some of their fun songs, but I not see myself listening to them like I used too.

The ‘fuck’ ‘fuckin’ ‘fuck’ lyrics doesn’t help either, jajajaja.

          • I saw atrocious live videos of them because drunken playing. I don’t know too much of music theory but I could hear the constant mistakes.

          • Yeah, no good man. I play gigs with a buzz on most times, but playing visually intoxicated is just disrespectful to fans. Then again, it can be entertaining to a point.

          • To be honest, I would go out of the gig if the band is heavy drunk. I am paying to hear the band playing, not half-playing because they are weak enough to not wait kill their liver after the show.

            Like you said, it’s disrespectful.

          • Unless you are Shane MacGowan or Jim Morrison it’s ok 😉

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

Shane MacGowan is still alive? I could have sworn he died. At least the two Doors albums after Jim died were good. They couldn’t have replaced him though even though I heard they wanted Iggy Pop to replace him.

          • He just got new teeth apparently.

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

He probably needed them after drinking as much as he did.

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

          • just like new!

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

            Ah, he got ’em fixed!

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

Or Vincent Houde from Dopethrone apparently.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

  • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

Yay, two of my possible AOTY candidates are out!

    • Based Pingu

      Trivium and Stryper?

      • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

No, WASP and Deafheaven! Even Queensryche is a possibility!

        • Based Pingu

I almost said WASP. I get half a point.

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

You do. Trivium is a letdown for me and Stryper doesn’t really matter to me.

        • some folks are talking very highly about that Queensryche album. we so excited to hear it!

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

I’m excited for it. I regret missing them now but I was out of town on the day they performed.

          • I’ve listened one song, the singer is cool and had good hooks. I think I can listen to it to check what’s about it.

  • Damn, I would have thought that Death Dealer was a tech death band just by looking at that artwork. Power metal is fitting too. It’s lacking the proper amount of purple to be tech death.

  • KJM, Doom Hunter General

OT: BTW, The idea that women don’t turn out for Metal shows is about 10 lbs of monkey crap in a 5 lb bag. I mean, this was “Type O Negative concert” levels of hotness.

    • Dagon

      What is “this”?

      • KJM, Doom Hunter General

Ghost/Purson last night at House Of Blues Boston.

        • Dagon

I think Ghost pulls a different crowd.

          • JJD Misses Witch Ripper

I missed them at Terminal 5. I’m sad now because I missed out on the pretty ladies that were probably there.

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

It was pretty varied. There were plenty of troo kvlt bangers as well as your Hot Topic types, also people even older than me. Much of the crowd didn’t know what to make of Purson, but they got a good reaction.

    • the Ghost show? doesn’t count (and i say this as a Ghost fan)

    • “Crank hotness to ‘Type O’.”

  • Dagon

I jammed the new Kylesa last week when the Noisey stream hit. It sounds very good, way better than I had anticipated from the preview tracks. The first song has a gnarly riff.

    • Going to check it this morning but I’m going to take a few sips of Slampagne first.

      • Dagon

I’ll leave it all to yourself, the slampagne doesn’t usually go down easily for me.

        • The slampagne was a little flat. With all the spacey references, I was expecting something along the lines of Wormed. The Kylesa is good. Laura sounds like she’s developing a knack for good melodies.

  • Count_Breznak

The Zillah song sounds more straight forward than their older material, still great. Want.

    Thanks, this week looks tasty!

  • I must know what Slampagne sounds like. Hope it’s nice and bubbly.

  • Guppusmaximus

The Faceless released a much awaited & appreciated, imho, new song…

    • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

      This song was, indeed, faceless.

      • Based Pingu

        And shitty, don’t forget shitty!

  • Scrimm

Been onto that Gravitational Distortion for about a week. Pretty enjoyable if that is your thing. That new Malevolent Creation song just makes me want to go back to bed. Fuck that sounds like a plan.

    • Vote for Jeb

I’ll check some of that slampagne on your behalf.

      • Scrimm

It’s pretty ridiculous, but still a good time.

No Brainer: JAG Trivuim review? Que pasa Jay?

    • Maik Beninton™

      I’m listening, it’s good, pretty radio-friendly.

    “Oooh, modern day Queensryche!”
    – No-one, ever.

  • Boss the Ross

Psychic Warfare is real! But apparently not according to this list. Where the hell is the new Clutch album?

  • Maik Beninton™

That Speljammer is very good, some psychedelic doom.

  • Dudes, that Gravitational Distortion [Slampagne] is ripping. Get on it!

As you can see, House Of Blues Boston was packed.(RFI)

  • Matt Pike’s Sweaty Left Nipple

    – I don’t hate the new Trivium.
    – Silence of the Old Man kinda sucks.
    – Satan rulez, duh.
    – Kylesa bring the stoner sludge riffage. Never really checked them out until I saw them perform a few years ago at a High on Fire and Suicidal Tendencies show. I didn’t know until then that they had two drummers/drumsets and that the frontwoman was both the vocalist and lead guitar. They won me over with their performance. Fantastic live band, their studio tracks only hint at their glory onstage.
    – For Today aren’t melodeath. They’re awful Christian-deathcore. I’m not saying they’re awful because they’re Christians (Crimson Thorn>>>>>>>>) but just awful in general. Derivative, boring deathcore. Pass. The best Christian-deathcore was Impending Doom’s first album, which bordered on Brutal Death most of the time. Too bad Impending Doom proceeded to jump the shark after that album and have sucked ever since.
    – Speaking of Christian bands, Stryper is lolbuttz. They’ve always been lolbuttz. With stripes.
    – Borgne sounds intriguing, will have to check them out. Darkspace >>>>>>>>>
    – Gravitational Distortion is some slammin’ slam to slam to. Slam it loud.
    – Children of Bodom still suck.
    – Malevolent Creation wrote the same album they’ve written the last several albums. Pass.
    – Aright, I’m done. For now….

  • Waynecro

Gravsang sounds kind of nifty. And the new Malevolent Creation song is catchy, though a bit Slayer-ish.

  • OldMetalHead

I can’t argue with the Lolbutz label on the Saurom, but the chick in the video is hot at least.

  • Lacertilian

That Tundra is sounding pretty cool so far.
