Greetings and welcome again to This Toilet Tuesday, fellow flushketeers. Unfortunately, there aren’t a whole lot of big releases to get excited about this week (I’m not 100% sold on that new Decapitated album yet), but there’s a hell of a lot of variety. It’s like the inevitable superpoop you take after eating at a bunch of dive bars on a long road trip; the food may not have seemed special at the time, but when the deed is done you will gaze fondly upon the remnants of meals past and the memories that came with them. Take some time to enjoy the little things (and little bands) this week. -Spear

zurvan

Zurvan – Land of Nothingness (Depressive Illusions) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Sludge”

Zurvan are a pretty raw experiment in black metal. The rhythm guitar holds down a bedrock riff while the vocalist shreds his throat in a worrisome manner. The production leaves something to be desired, but the strange tone of the guitar solo and the high-mix drums are just part of the necro charm. Plus, there’s an interesting orchestrated segment near the end that adds an extra dimension to the blood-letting. This likely won’t make it to my end of year list, but I could probably give this album a few shakes so long as I don’t have to watch any more lulzy videos. Plus, I don’t know enough bands that start with the letter Z.

blood storm

Blood Storm – The Stellar Exorcism (Barbarian Wrath) [Black/Thrashl]
Listen to “Howling Void”

Now this is more like it! The production is raw, but that pummeling drum line provides a solid foundation to launch fuzzy black riffs and oddly thrashy vocals snarling about the great Old Ones. This is a pretty rocking experiment in black metal melded with thrash and rock. I can dig it. Plus, that squealing lead about halfway through is tasty.

priests of ba'al

Priests of Ba’al – Divining the Akashic Records for Satanic Apotheosis (Independent) [Symphonic Black Metal]
Stream

The cover art for “Divining the Akashic Records for Satanic Apotheosis” provides a much more accurate depiction of Priests of Ba’al’s sound than a few measly sentences ever could, but here goes anyway.  Priests of Ba’al play big, epic, Abigail Williams-style black metal, but with a touch more “black” than the latter.  The production is surprisingly sharp for an independent black metal act; no element of their sound overwhelms the mix and it’s not painfully lo-fi.  The lyrics are fittingly epic, delivered in a raspy growl over big tremolo-picked riffs and furious, tight drumming.  The whole wicked package is topped off with a worthy cover of Emperor’s “Encorcelled by Khaos.”

  • Doctor Dickless

    Yay, it’s finally snowing!
(As you can notice, this comment has nothing to do with what’s above. For that I am truly sorry)

    • well well, caught Havok and Revocation last night and look who’s coming to town!

    • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

Not a single flake down here, I wish it’d snow a whole lot.

      • Doctor Dickless

There’s a darn good amount of snow here. Too bad it will melt soon. Hopefully the real snow comes soon.
        Winter >>>>>>>>>>>

        • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

Winter with lots of snow>>>Winter without snow(typical winter that is, it’s depressing the wrong way)

          • Doctor Dickless

The last winter was real shitty.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

Hopefully this is going to be better, was a bad winter in many ways.
and I’ve heard it is supposed to be a better one

          • Doctor Dickless

Hopefully it will. There’s already snow, so maybe it is a sign of better winter.

  • Tyree

Energumen is getting me awake this morning! War fucking metal!!!!!!!!!

  • Scrimm

Not much interesting this week. I guess it’s a good time to pick up the other Drudkh cd I’ve been looking at at the store the past few weeks.

    • Doctor Dickless

Agreed. None lf these really float my boat.

      • W.

There isn’t much standing out to me. Oh well.

        • Doctor Dickless

Well, the next month will be busy as fuck when it comes to new albums.

          • Beunhaas

What are you people looking forward to for the rest of the year? I’m mostly waiting for the new Ne Obliviscaris coming in November.

          • Doctor Dickless

The new Blut Aus Nord is the one I’m waiting the most. Also excited for the new Kayo Dot.

          • Edward Meehan

Blut Aus Nord for sure, Inter Arma, Full of Hell / Merzbow, Old Man Gloom… more too. I have a list at home lol

          • Tyree

So looking forward to new Inter Arma.

          • Scrimm

Now that I’ve been listening to Bastard Sapling I’ll have to give Inter Arma a listen.

          • thanks for that mention. forgot to listen to bastard sapling!

          • Scrimm

            I really like them.

          • Virgil the Ghost Poet

I love Inre Arms, but what’s this Bastard Sapling?

          • Scrimm

A black metal band with several of the same members. New album came out a couple weeks ago. Good stuff.

          • Virgil the Ghost Poet

Cool, I will put that in my Amazon cart.

          • Old Man Gloom…..That is all.

          • Bloodbath, 1349, Revocation, Lost Soul, Stargazer, Beyond Creation, Anaal Nathrakh, Abysmal Dawn. as you can tell, i’m more of a metal pleb than most people on here!

          • Doctor Dickless

No Blut Aus Nord? You know what that means.

          • that too. but y’all had that one covered already!

          • Doctor Dickless

            What about Devin Townsend?

          • i dunno about him anymore. deconstruction, ghost, and epicloud all underwhelmed me. not bad by any means, but not up to devy standards.

          • Doctor Dickless

            But Ziltoid man!

          • W.

Godflesh, Sanctuary, The Body/Thou. I think maybe one or two more.

          • Tyree

Swallowed, Primitive Man, Baptists, and Hierophant come to mind.

          • Scrimm

            Swallowed for sure.

          • Simon Phoenix

Godflesh, Stargazer, and Infinitum Obscure are the ones I’m anticipating.

          • Virgil the Ghost Poet

Mrlvins and Rwake has a reissue coming in Dec with 3d cover art with glasses. Oh and Monster Magnet. They are redoing their Last Patrol album differently.

    • Edward Meehan

It will certainly give me a chance to go through some older music and give my Best of 2014 albums another spin. Decisions, decisions.

      • Scrimm

I have no idea how I’m gonna come up with a best of list this year.

        • W.

I’ve got a spreadsheet, but it’s definitely going to be hard to nail down the bottom slots. Maybe I’ll just write a Matlab program to pick for me.

          • Scrimm

That could work. I know Blood of Kingu and Artificial Brain will be there, but I don’t know beyond that.

          • Edward Meehan

            Artificial Brain >>>>>>>>>

          • i saw that guy last night (from Revocation) and informed him that Artificial Brain is contender for album of the year! he was so nice.

          • Edward Meehan

Did you see them play last night? Revocation I mean.

          • ya, Havok and Revocation! didn’t stick around for Crowbar cause no interest! (and work starts at 8:30AM)

          • Tyree

            Artificial Meehan >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

          • Edward Meehan

            The Tyree of Virtues >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

          • Edward Meehan

9 Fruitless Years Of Total Fvcking Agony >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

          • J.R.

Dude brah. Brah dude. We’re learning Matlab in my “numerical methods” class. I know it is a widely used tool but I’m now imagining “who around me could be a lurking W…”.

          • W.

I learned it in Numerical Methods a couple of years ago. I’m guessing you’re a structural engineering student?

        • we may need a D-Wave quantum computer for this.

          • Scrimm

I keep thinking of stuff, and then I realize it’s all stuff that came out last year.

        • Edward Meehan

I have six choices pretty much locked in but one or two of them could potentially go. I have a short list of others I am considering that I have heard and albums that haven’t come out that I expect to be possible candidates. It’s freakin’ me out a little lol

          • Scrimm

Yeah. Usually I have a pretty good idea by now but I’m lost. That Bastard Sapling is really growing on me and I still need to give Pyrrhon an attentive listen.

          • Edward Meehan

            Pyrrhon?!

          • Scrimm

Yeah I have yet to really listen to them. Been meaning to since the new one dropped.

          • Edward Meehan

            Spoiler: it’s fantastic.

          • Scrimm

I trust y’all’s opinion. I’ll think I’ll just pick it up. they have a used copy like 2 miles from my place.

          • Edward Meehan

            CD, vinyl, … ?

          • Scrimm

CD. Ashamed to admit I have not made the jump to vinyl yet.

        • Virgil the Ghost Poet

Me to buddy. I have a great list of 15 right now and that doesn’t include Agalloch, Cormorant, Indian, and Mournful Congregation. That doesn’t include Godhunter, Tryptikon, Earth, and Source that I just got in the email this week. And my Godflesh, Primus, Melvins, and Inre Arma pre-order that I have next month. And I haven’t bought WITTR, Wife, Echoes, Twilight, and Lord Months yet. I finally understand when people say that this year is a good year for metal. Every year I find stuff that I really like but this year is awesome.

          • Scrimm

Yeah I have to sit down and really go through everything that I’ve purchased this year.

  • Irrelevant to new releases, I finally got my hands on Today Is The Day’s first album, “Supernova” delivered personally by Steve Austin, himself. I made him a promise to love and care for it until I pass and make my future children listen to it from beginning to end.

More relevant to new releases, that Weedeater is fucking killer!!!!

    • W.

You know Steve Austin? Or did he just mail it to you?

      • The latter…I wish I knew Steve Austin. He seems like one of the coolest people in metal.

        • W.

I was about to be impressed. Still though!

          • “Can you smell what Brock is cooking?”
            -Andre the Giant, 1845

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan

Austin 3:16 said Today Is The Day just whooped your ass!

          • Tyree
          • And that’s the one with Brann and Bill of Mastodon. But i have to say “Temple of the Morning Star” is my favorite TITD.

            http://youtu.be/HDHakYnnpPY

But I still have loads of hype for “Animal Mother”

          • W.

            Mine too!

          • Tyree

Great album! In the Eyes of God is one of my favorites by them though. Just a mean as fuck track.

          • n00b question here: how would one classify this band?

          • Early stuff was pretty standard AmRep noise rock, then they signed to Relapse and got all sludgy, now they’re turning back.

          • Noise-core/grind, but it’s ever evolving, as Steve tends to have different musicians with him for each release.

          • W.

They sort of were metalcore in the original sense of the word (metal+hardcore), but each release is different.

          • Howard Dean

DTA you stupid piece of trash! And that’s the bottom line, cause Stone Cold says so!

  • Guacamole Jim

I kinda like that Beak song you linked to, but I’m with you in that there’s not a huge amount that’s piquing my interest this week. I’m actually kinda glad, because I’ve already got a list of Music To Check Out from the TovH that’s going to take me years to get through.

    • Edward Meehan

Spoiler: you’ll never get through it cause it keeps getting bigger lol

      • Just like my Steam library :/

        • W.

Oh man, I bought a summer package a couple years ago, and I still haven’t played all the games in it. Curse you, adult life.

          • Doh, those summer sales…I’m fairly certain at least 50% of my library is still untouched. It also doesn’t help that I constantly revisit Euro Truck Simulator 2.

          • W.

The only game I’ve played lately is Civ V.

          • Beunhaas

            Civ 5 >>>>>>>>>

          • I might have to check this out. I have always been more of a AOE3 player myself.

            GL

          • Beunhaas

With AOE you mean Age of Empires right? Civ 5 is quite different to that. Civ 5 belongs to a subgenre of strategy games called 4X (expand, explore, exploit, exterminate). It’s propably my favorite thing ever when it comes to games, and civ 5 is a great introduction. Be sure to grab the expansions Brave new World and Gods & Kings with it.

          • Yeah a bit different apparently, the videos seem cool. I will have to wait till winter is here until I have the motivation to make time to play. Thanks duder!

            GL

          • W.

It really is fun, but it’s very engrossing.

          • Engrossing is the only way games should be played! Neat

            GL

          • SMOHLG

You need internet to play Civ 5?

          • W.

Just for the initial install and registration.

          • Your use of “Duder” leads me to assume that you’re a Giantbomb.com user.

          • No sir!

            GL

          • Well in that case, it’s a badass video game website.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

I’ve spent more days playing civ V than I want to admit

          • …just…one…more…..turn

          • W.

            Oh man, I know!

          • Xan

            Fucking Gandhi.

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan

The only game I will be playing is the Gauntlet remake when it comes out for PC. I love that series and it’s exciting that another one is coming out.

          • W.

I haven’t played a Gauntlet game in ages, but they’re pretty good fun if you like simple button mashing hack’n’slash!

          • Spear

Speaking of which, Hyrule Warriors comes out in three days.

          • W.

Ugggh. I still haven’e been able to pull together the funds to buy a Wii U. Maybe next year.

          • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

hey man, don’t feel bad about my comments on the other site. I play a character there, i like to throw a monkey wrench into things to have fun with reactions. Here i am my peaceful self. I am kind of playing a wrestler persona there, i don’t want to break character. Hope i didn’t hurt your feelings.

        • Xan

I know. I’ve got 275 games, 250 of which (approximation) are untouched. I get lots of bundles from Humble Bundle and Steam sales. I’m making my way through Metro: Last Light right now. It is a very metal game.

          • I may have to boot up some Metro. That’s one of the many untouched games in my library.

          • Xan

I bought the Metro 2033 Redux and beat it. It was an excellent game but if you don’t have a powerful graphics card, it will fuck your computer’s ass till it bleeds. One of the nicest looking games on the PC. Metro Last Light has a problem with the Nvidia GeForce PhysX drivers. You have to turn that shit off or you’ll be getting about 8fps if you don’t have and Nvidia graphics card.

        • JWG

I thought I could deliberately limit my game-purchasing by deliberately buying in store rather than going on steam spending sprees (like I do all too often with Bandcamp & iTunes).

But considering how little time I’ve put into gaming versus the inevitably draw of buying something shiny and new that everyone seems to be playing, I get sucked right in anyway.

then a few years later, nobody’s playing it (whatever it is) anymore and I still haven’t found the time…

          • I know what you mean. That’s one of the reasons i tend to focus on single player games. I’ve still been playing lots of Borderlands 2 along with the Euro Truck sim. There’s still a lot of people playing BL2, granted they’re all dirty little loot thieves.

      • Guacamole Jim

        I know… 🙁

But, to use the expression of a wise man, good music >>>>>>>>

        • Edward Meehan

          A wise and just man.

      • Doctor Dickless

You listen to one album and there are at least five more to add on the list after that.

    • Spear

I’d like to see one of Rho Stone’s analyses of the video for that song.

      • Guacamole Jim

        That would be awesome!

  • Soilwork is so good.

  • My apologies for being pedantic and what-not, but Weedeater’s Sixteen Tons is actually a Season of Mist release.

    • shallow and pedantic?

      • Tyree

        Perhaps.

      • Doctor Dickless

        Or a big fat phony!

  • Gonna jump on that new Decapitated later, prolly.

    • i spun it once, i dug. we need to find out what people aren’t liking about it!

  • Janitor Jim Dvggan

There was a new Soilwork thing? I would buy it but it’s exclusive to Asia apparently.

    • It’s 5 unreleased tracks. And you can order it here: http://www.cdjapan.co

      • Janitor Jim Dvggan

I shall give it a listen as I love unreleased stuff from bands.

      • Virgil the Ghost Poet

Do you buy a lot from them? I was wondering on which shipping works best (cheapest/safest). I just preordered Godflesh yesterday and I chose airmail. Last time I choose sal and it was great but then I read horror stories about that so I went a little more expensive. Any thoughts?

        • No I don’t really buy anything from anywhere other than at an actual record store.

  • Hyborian Steel is surprisingly good.

  • kapsberger

I got all excited about Decapitated, but it’s not out in the U.S. until next week. Now I am sad.

    • I’ve heard it, don’t be excited it was a huge disappointment.

  • New Destrose is so catchy and fun. It would probably make you all upset.

  • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

Ashes, Lilyum, Helevore were alright. But Soma, Otta I’ll be reintroducing myself to you soon. How is it that everyone can agree there was no magnificent music released on some week. I mean shouldn’t at least one find a ton of great musuc released this week? Or is it just really that slow?

  • J.R.

    Gormathon and Soilwork!?
    Oh goodie!
Once I get out of Dynamics I SHALL VENTURE FORTH INTO THE FRAY OF METAL AND ASCEND TO MY HIGHER FORM

    • W.

Dynamics too? You’re definitely an engineer.

      • J.R.

Junior yeah of Aerospace Engineering at UAH. Pretty good stuff. Goes well with my love of power metal and atmospheric black metal. One meshing with my desire to soar amongst the stars and conquer with my sword of righteous flame, the other reflecting the vast and endless gulf of space and my insignificance therein.

        • W.

That’s great! I’m a traffic engineering PhD student.

          • CÖÄL RÖLL FRÖM THE TÖILET BÖWL

Please explain why these Prius insist on driving in the left lane at exactly 65 mph on the highway

          • Xan

They’re just asking for a coal roll.

  • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

Evergrey has become ever-disappointing, I pine for their better days

    • Guacamole Jim

      Amen!

  • Owlswald

New Decapitated isn’t out until next Tuesday you damn teases.

    • Spear

Only for the US. It’s going to be out everywhere else by Friday.

  • Mr. Bojangles

Supposedly Beyond the Infinite is only available in Japan. Is that true?

Also, fuck this week. Decapitated and Black Crown next week.

  • Squibble Skwonk

I can see why a lot of people have mixed feelings about the new Decapitated album. Played side-by-side with Nihility, it almost feels like two different bands. But you can’t deny that Blood Mantra is groovy as hell.

      I LOVE THESE MOVIES!

I was flipping through movie channels last night and came across Heathers starting up in a few minutes. Wow – Have not seen that in a long-ass time. Heathers captures something about high school that (for me) never seems to let up in memories: feelings of detachment. Feeling like I was drowning in a sea of fake faces fronting fake lives. I hated high school.

I had hoped that with a title like ‘Hreow’ I’d find out that Ashes was a metal band with a cat for a vocalist.

Also, you call it ‘doom’ but the Candlelight bandcamp lists it as Old School Black Metal. I can not listen to determine which is true, though, as I’m currently at the University to finish my lecture/exercise prep for this week’s Labs, and they’ve disabled the speakers on all the computers.

Was just about to comment on that…I havent listened to the new one yet either, but unless theyve changed their sound since the last album, Ashes plays a really raw sounding type of ambient black metal

Some new Blood Storm? Yes please.

On a completely unrelated note to anything else, I wonder if any TovH denizens who have iPhones like I do could help me figure out something that seems counterintuitive.

I only ever download Apps that claim to be also iPad compatible (in case I ever get one). But I somehow nonetheless, especially increasingly over the last few months, have wound up with many (total now 60/150) that iTunes list in the “iPhone/iPod” group and not “iPhone/iPod/IPad”.

Am I missing a step? Is it forcing me to get the iPhone version only because that’s all I’ve ever plugged into iTunes? Does it even really matter?

Kill your cell phone. Buy a megaphone!

Hahahaha! That is the best advice I have ever heard.
