This Toilet Tuesday (8/2/16)

Welcome to another round of This Toilet Tuesday! The summer rolls on and the music continues to flow; you need your fix, and we’re here to provide. Stockhausen, Lacertilian, and I have picked a couple of our favorites, but there’s a lot more in the list below. Pick out a couple and share with the group!

Voidspawn – Pyrrhic (Independent) [Weird Death]

Hark! The sickly strains of death do sing! Lean down thine ears, yon skronkodiles, that discord may lay her sweet and terrible path o’er thine hearts and minds. Then rise! Rise and stagger! Stagger down yonder path (oh discord, say thankya!), for the haunted tones of Voidspawn guide thy drunken steps. Drink deep of that thick and venomous air, where mayhap the lingering stench of Gorguts, Teeth, and Abyssal finds thou prostrate at the end of the path, short as it may be, begging for sweet misery from Voidspawn again. 7/30/16 (Stockhausen)

VTTA – On the Vortex of Chasing the Abyss of Despair (Death Knell Productions) [Weird Black Metal]
Listen to “Moon Dances Lead Into the Void,” “Through the Veil of the Light”

VTTA, which stands for Vessel Through The Abyss, is a fascinating beast to behold. The new EP On the Vortex of Chasing the Abyss of Despair is my first experience with the Russian trio, and I was pleased to find that their brand of black metal is anything but typical. I was distantly reminded of the fluid structure and melodicism of Bloodway, but with a vastly different vocal style. Most of the vocal passages are delivered in a bold declamatory style, with forays into harsh screaming and tense, layered spoken word. With four EPs but no full lengths to their name, VTTA is a creative force to keep an eye or two on. 8/6/16 (Stockhausen)

Necromancing the Stone – Jewel of the Vile (Metal Blade Records) [Movietitlepuncore]
Listen to “The Siren’s Call,” “The Descent”

Behold, ladies and gentlemen: the reason we haven’t heard from Arsis for the past year and a half or so. I’m still not sure how to feel about this; on one hand Necromancing the Stone definitely brings the riffs. On the other, vocalist John Williams brings the whole experience down. It’s not that his voice is bad; it’s just that he doesn’t deliver on the “power” portion of what is ostensibly a darker-than-usual power metal band. If you can get past the vocals, there’s a lot of fun to be had here. Otherwise, you can be like me and force yourself to acclimate, or just ignore it altogether and listen to this instead. 8/5/16 (Spear)

A Diadem of Dead Stars – Kingdoms Bathed In Golden Light (Independent) [Atmospheric BM]

Do you yearn for that familiar post-rainfall smell? Some Australian nerds decided to call it petrichor, which is Greek for “Dank Stench.” The smell comes from plant oils and terpenes sequestered within rocks, which are drawn out by water. Greece’s A Diadem of Dead Stars is the sonic equivalent of that smell. Previously, I covered (and thoroughly recommended) this relatively new one-man instrumental artist’s two-part release titled The Mist Bearer. Here, The Pilgrim’s second LP Kingdoms Bathed In Golden Light is a slight departure from his previous work, in that it is a little crisper, features sporadic vocal use, and has some darker shades in places. In particular, the final half of “A Crown of Clouds On The Mountain’s Brow,” which shows the valleys which adorned The Mist Bearer(s) are not always as serene as they appear. FFO: WITTR, Skaur, Mesarthim7/15/16 (Lacertilian)

  • I saw a bunch of you goobers picked up that Voidspawn. Gonna have to play that one today I guess.

    Temple Nightside >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  • I spilled my entire travel mug full of tea all over my desk and headphones. FUCK THIS DAY. Gonna check out that Voidspawn once my headphones dry off and hopefully still work.

    • Dubbbz

That’s what you get for betraying sweet lady Coffee.

      • Lady Coffee is disgusting. Hail Lord Earl Gray.

        • Dubbbz

I bet you also think Shiner Black is a dark beer.

          • RACIST

          • I don’t. I also don’t really drink much beer, fucks my stomach up pretty bad. Hail Duke Whiskey!

          • Your poser hole you are digging is getting quite deep, friend.

          • The water’s getting warm so you might as well swim.
My world’s on fire, how ’bout yours?

          • I already have my trunks on, bb.

          • *BOINNNNGGGGG

          • Dubbbz

Let’s see if you can go for a hat-trick of disappointment this morning. What’s your favorite sport?

          • Football (soccer)

          • Dubbbz

GET OUT! Only curling is real.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

Wrong. The only acceptable ice based sport is hockey.

          • Dubbbz

You’re out of your element, Donny.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

I sure am! Still hockey is the best winter sport. Go Devils!

          • Stockhausen

I always knew we were meant to be together.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

I love basketball. Im a huge 76ers fan.

          • Señor Jefe El Rosa

            This made me laugh heartily.

            Shiner <<<<<<<<<<<<<

        • Hail our lord and savior!

          • Dubbbz

I’m not at all surprised that you would agree with a particularly bad opinion.

          • How many cups of coffee can you drink before your heart bursts from your throbbing skeleton and your mind races through infinite interstellar timelines all exploding within a single mote within your mind

          • Dubbbz

I never experience that because I’m a man.

          • Yeah well I can drink like a ton of tea without getting heart arrhythmi so f u

          • Joaquin Stick

I am weak, It takes me about 20oz. I usually drink 19.

          • Dubbbz

Seriously, I can drink like 7 cups before 5 and not even be phased.

          • I used to be able to, but I cut back on caffeine last year and never got back up to that point. I usually drink 2 large cups of coffee per day. I can drink more at home, but I have a cat to play with at home

          • Dubbbz

You are closer to redemption, my son.

          • I prefer both. Coffee at work, tea when I get home. I can chug tea all night then go to bed with little trouble since the caffeine in tea is so much lower than coffee

          • Stockhausen

Since I’m an old man, I have to say that’s sensible. Cutting back on caffeine is good and I’m probably going to start working more tea into my life. However, it will NEVER replace the sweet, dark embrace of black coffee. That will be with me until my bitter end, which will probably be on a mountain.

          • Actually, a programmer did a study on cutting out coffee completely from his life. Obviously at first he was less productive, but he never was as productive as he was when he did drink coffee.

Naturally he started drinking coffee again.

          • Stockhausen

Hahahahaha. I gave up caffeine entirely for a couple years in undergrad (no coffee for a few weeks, then I gradually worked in decaf), and the first week or so was utterly miserable. After that, I noticed that I felt distinctly better and more rested when I woke up each morning.

Naturally I started drinking regular coffee again.

          • I tried going the ONLY TEA route.

            It’s way too much effort

          • 19oz is a specific answer, friend.

          • Joaquin Stick

I know my limit, and I like to get right up to it haha. I envy people who can drink it all day.

          • I had 24oz of coffee and two diet Dr. Peppers this morning.

            I. Am. Lit.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

Caffeine doesn’t affect me. Whenever I drink something with caffeine I’m the same as when I don’t drink caffeine.

          • Or before your stomach becomes completely eroded.

          • Dubbbz

Yo dude, my sister who has gastroparesis said she found some gluten-free decaf coffee or something that she can drink without her stomach going ape. It’s decaf (blech), but if you like coffee, may be worth a try.

          • I love coffee. It saddens me that I can’t drink it. Will look into this though. At least one cup of it would be nice every once in a while. Same goes for beer 🙁

          • Dubbbz

I can ask her the brand if you’d like.

          • Right on!

          • Stockhausen

Dude, I’m bummed just thinking about you not able to enjoy coffee and beer. Hopefully once you’re back to full health you can work a bit of that in.

          • At least I get to poop everything out

          • Pooping >>>>

          • CyberneticOrganism

        • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Earl is basically a title of it’s own, so it’s highly unlikely he’d be both an Earl and a Lord.

        • Pagliacci is Kvlt

          *Grey, named for Charles Grey.

    • LOL @TEA

      • Why? Tea is good.

        • The enjoyment garnered from drinking tea does not overcome the significant effort required to make said tea. AND if you have to buy it in a bottle, it costs too much.

          • Ah, well. I drink a lot of it now (Decaf) because of my issues. I’ve learned to really enjoy it. Plus it’s hella good for you!

          • Significant effort?
            > Get hot water in mug
            > Put tea bag into water for 3-5 mins
            > Add milk/sugar to your liking

          • Haha!

      • Tea is just coffee for juggalos.

  • Joaquin Stick

I was REALLY digging Diadem until those fucking weird ass cavernous vocals. Maybe I can fight through it.

  • If yall don’t have a RYM account yall are messin up, it has made keeping up with new releases so easy I can’t even stand it.

    • Stanley

      I just use my memory.

      • I always forget to do this.

      • RJA

I always did – but my memory has almost failed me a couple times lately.

    • Keeping a list of stuff I liked these past couple years with that site has been a godsend.

    • RJA

I mentioned previously that I started an account the last time you brought it up – I’m really digging it so far and I needed to catalogue my collection badly!

Have the metal vinyl so far:

        • RJA

I do man – and that’s only metal! I’m sure it hasn’t cost me that much!

  • OHHH YEAH! New Ablaze My Sorrow! One of the old soldiers of Swedish Melodeath is back with some razor shaped riffing melodies 😀

I will also put my elfic eye into A Diadem of Dead Stars.

    Thanks, guys!

  • Not sure why, but “Mist of Misery” made me lol.

  • Maik Beninton™
    • Waynecro

Her guitar music’s pretty sweet, though.

  • 365ChaosRiddenDays

I’m glad about the comeback by Ablaze My Sorrow, some good Melodic Death Metal with the spirit of the 90’s but there’s some other interesting releases like Temple Nightside, Numenorean and Vukari in these days.

  • Simon PhoenixKing Rising

Dead Nexus sounds sloppy as fuck, and not in a good way.

I’m really digging Decayed despite the generic name, and Paganizer really does it for me. But the latter band putting the cassette format on their digital release is a-nnoy-ing.

  • Señor Jefe El Rosa

Bloody Hammers is labeled well as chill doom. Very melancholic, gothic and dark with some eerie synth work.

    • I’m checking this out, Boss!

      • Señor Jefe El Rosa

You were the first person to come to mind. Haha

  • Maik Beninton™

Carnage Inc. is very nice. Very good riffs.
    I recommend it.

  • Dubbbz

    Voidspawn is nice.

    • Stockhausen

      You’re a towel.

      • Dubbbz

        That’s fair.

        • Stockhausen

But yes, Voidspawn is quite nice. I’m really looking forward to either a longer EP or a full length in the near future.

  • Howard Dean

    HD’s picks of the week:

    -The Hati/Alptraum/Grabschänder split

-Decayed – The Burning of Heaven. It seems like these dudes put shit out every other month, but it’s mostly solid. Decayed also hold the distinction of being the band of whom I’ve received the most free/promo CDs bundled into orders from various labels–apparently distros like giving away their stuff for free (aka they don’t sell). Solid shit, though.

-Obtained Enslavement – Witchcraft. It may have been released 19 years ago, but it would be the best thing released this week (and most other weeks) if it had actually been released this week and not 19 years ago. Inception riddle, bitches.

    • Howard Dean

Also: I like some “weird” (aka dissonant/chaotic/avant-garde) death metal and black metal, but my fuck is the current scene flooded with it. No more, please. Write some riffs and songs, goddamnit!

      • Stockhausen

Yeah, we’re definitely flooded with it nowadays. I’m more or less okay with it though, since it’s my style of choice, but it does make for a lot of monotonous junk to sift through.

        • Dubbbz

For every Withered, we have a Coma Cluster Void…

          • Stockhausen

            And W. with the REKT.

      • 365ChaosRiddenDays

That Decayed has a lot of infectious riffs, like the song in War of The Gods.

      • Just give me more Impetuous Ritual please and thank you kindly.

        • Howard Dean

Or Grave Upheaval! I’ll gladly take another album of stupidly heavy mud baths of distorted death.

          • Dubbbz

            YES! This band is rad.

          • YES. These two bands have been way too quite as of lately.

          • Howard Dean

Yeah. Impetuous Ritual’s latest was 2014, so not too bad. Grave Upheaval’s album was 2013, the same year as Portal’s Vexovoid. I wonder what that band of crazy Australians is working on. One of the three has got to drop something new, soon. My bet’s on Portal.

Kind of on the same page: I’d like to hear some new Vasaeleth, as well–hopefully with more killer artwork from Kramer:

          • Can’t wait to see what he comes up with for that new Nyogthaeblisz. Dude is a super talented painter.

          • Howard Dean

I’m excited for to see that, too. Very excited for that album (whenever it gets released!).

My favorite AK artwork has still got to be Deathwomb Catechesis (doesn’t hurt that the album absolutely destroys):

            Second favorite:

          • Yeah! Everything about that Pseudogod album is incredible!

Dude, have you heard this yet? Super raw blackened death thrash in vein of Necrovore.

          • Howard Dean

No, haven’t listened to this yet. Just clicked play on the first track and love the rawness and the riffs already. Will definitely give it a shot!

EDIT: Man, those vocals, too. Tortured! And those riffs don’t quit. Good stuff.

          • Really rad stuff! KSOFM got me into them. Sucks that the vocalist just died though.

          • Howard Dean

Dang, that sucks. Dude had really distinctive and promising DM vocal from the sounds of that demo.

          • Agreed!

      • tertius_decimus

        But Howard… 🙁

        • Howard Dean

Sorry. But the world has enough of this stuff at the moment. We need more tunes and riffs!

  • 365ChaosRiddenDays
    • Stanley

      Oh, yes.

      • Seconded.

        • Abradolf Lincler

      • 365ChaosRiddenDays

I think that “Devotion For The Devil” was one of the best BM releases of the last year and with this song Aegrus are keeping high the quality!

        • Stanley

Looking back on it, I think DFTD should have made it in my top ten, and I think this new song is as good as (better even) anything on DFTD.

          • 365ChaosRiddenDays

Yes, the sorrowful melody with the galvanizing riff-fest stay stuck inside the head, truly searing and dynamic track, can’t wait to hear the whole EP but there’s no release date yet!

          • Stanley

All they say on Facebook is, “Soon”. And you mini-song write up is exactly how I feel about this song. Excellent song writing.

    • CyberneticOrganism

I want to hang out in that basement

  • REALLY looking forward to that new Temple Nightside…

    • Lacertilian

In all honesty, if you’ve heard the 2 or 3 pre-release tracks, there’s only really one or two tracks (proper) left to hear. The rest are interludes, which do a great job of building the mortuary atmosphere but don’t riff at all.

      • They actually did something similar with their Prophecies of Malevolence demo in 2011. Less riffs, sure, but what was there was so much more memorable thanks to the atmospheric build-up.

  • Waynecro
