This Toilet Tuesday (7/19/16)

Greetings, Toilet urchins, and welcome to another This Toilet Tuesday! The summer continues to be anything but dry with a bevy of great new music of all styles. It’s easy to get lost in all this music; for every new piece you listen to, you bookmark three for later, and by the time you’ve listened to that, there are twenty more new albums to get to, so you bookmark the new new stuff and get back to the past stuff but it’s all just piling up and you’ve barely made a dent and you don’t know where to start because you can’t remember what you’ve already listened to and oh god send help.

anal caper

Anal Vomit/Ordo Caper – Culto de los Venenos (split- Dunkelheit Produktionen) [Blackened Thrash/Death Metal]
Listen to “Sendero Siniestro” (AV), “Igboddu,” “Acid Orgy” (OC)

With a name like Anal Vomit, you know you’re in for some bestial black filth of the most malicious, and unintentionally humorous, kind. Except that Anal Vomit are a typical South American Blackthrashers. And as you know, SA black/thrash is some of the most vicious. So expect raw production, bulging bass and bloodied vocals over plain, but capable Peruvian riffs. On a short release like this split the band ought to be at their best. They’ve been paired up with Ordo Caper who do deliver the bestial black filth I longed for. With Hellhammer-influenced guitar-noise and Profanatica-like mid-tempo devastation they leave no survivors behind. The only memorable feature, however, are the two vocal tracks delivering at a slightly different pace.

All in all, a regular but pleasantly nasty, blackened split. 7/18/16 (Karhu)

Svirnath – Il regno della natura (Naturmacht Productions) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Light of the Sun”

Naturmacht Productions is a label you can trust to deliver quality. If you’re not full of atmospheric black metal, not entirely dissimilar to trees ‘n shit, the nature-hailing Italians of Svirnath would like to persuade you with a synth-laden album that doesn’t forget riffs or sound sterile. 7/23/16 (Karhu)

defeated sanity

Defeated Sanity – Disposal of the Dead/Dharmata (Willowtip Records) [Tech/Brutal Death]

This “split” album from Defeated Sanity is a pretty strange idea. I get it. The guys are talented musicians and wanted to show off their different influences and abilities. That’s all fine and good, but it’s pretty bizarre hearing the Dharmata material after the Disposal of the Dead songs. As you’d expect, it comes off like a mix tape of Brodequin and Cynic. Extremely open-minded listeners may enjoy both sides, but I can’t imagine most won’t feel extremely underwhelmed by the whole product after enjoying one half or the other. FFO: Dying Fetus, Embodied Torment, Orchidectomy/Atheist, later Death, fart noises 7/22/16 (W.)

selves we cannot forgive

Black Crown Initiate – Selves We Cannot Forgive (eOne Entertainment) [Tech Death/Progressive Metal]
Listen to “Vicious Lives,” “Selves We Cannot Forgive,” “For Red Cloud”

I’d been feeling lukewarm about Black Crown Initiate after forcing myself to try to enjoy The Wreckage of Stars a hundred times, but something changed when I heard “Vicious Lives.” I don’t know if the music has improved or if I’m just looking at it a different way now, but there’s something about it that has rekindled my interest in the band. It feels both familiar and new, grounded emotively in the past and looking aurally to the future. It’s hard to say what the full album will sound like, but these three tunes have me cautiously optimistic. 7/22/16 (Spear)

Ashaena – Calea (Loud Rage Music) [Folk/Black Metal]
Listen to “Calea,” Spirit-Sageata,” “Mos Urs”

Assignment – Closing the Circle (Massacre/Soulfood) [Power Prog]
Listen to “Genetic Slavery”

Avataria – New World Order (Recordjet) [Fedora Metal]
Listen to “The Ripper”

    Yes. Music.

    • Dubbbz

Stan, I’ve been jamming the promo for Predatory Light’s debut this morning. It’s good. I think you will enjoy it when it is released.

      • Stanley

I saw that someone mentioned it on FB. I didn’t know it was coming out. I really liked their side of the split with Vorde last year.

        • Dubbbz

I think it just got announced this morning (or last night). Due out in September.

      black metal is stanist music??

  • Joaquin Stick

My goal for listening to the new Black Crown is to try to forget their past. I have a feeling I’ll enjoy it in isolation, but might not if I position it next to some of their other work. Is this weird?

Also hoping I will enjoy Periphery, I’ve listened to each song once as they came out and wasn’t over the moon about them, but I usually come around hearing them all at once.

    • Eliza

It’s not weird. I think every album should be able to sand on its own, independently of the other releases.

      • This is what I like to think too, but then I remember what a bore the last Black Breath album was and forget myself.

    • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

I gave two new Periphery songs a spin, because… yeah.
Less bad than what I have heard from them before, so you probably won’t like it as much.

      • CyberneticOrganism

I like the lack of clean singing in The Price is Wrong; actually kinda heavy

      • Joaquin Stick

That might be a weird assumption, I would actually guess that any change that you enjoy, I will probably enjoy as well. I don’t need them to stay they same at all, always hoping they get heavier actually. The song they released yesterday had some surprisingly cool blasting in it.

        • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

I’ve, uh, strongly disliked Periphery in the past so I was playing to the “Now that I like it, no one who previously did will”- card.

          • Joaquin Stick

Ah, haha. No, I don’t typically fall victim to the hipster ways of starting to dislike things. But I do enjoy disagreeing with you specifically, so maybe it would work 😉

      • Ooh, SPLENDID! I have a deep v-neck tee for you right here, it even matches mine!

    • Not weird at all. That’s exactly what I’ll have to do to enjoy it. Cause right now it feels like it’s gonna be a sophomore slump.

    • Spear

Having heard all of the new Periphery… it’s good. Won’t earn them any new fans, but it’s quite solid.

As to BCI, I liked it a lot more when I looked at it from a post-metal standpoint. It clicked almost instantly that way.

      • Joaquin Stick

Good to know. I think I’ll really like it, as long as I am not expecting anything. As for Periphery, I don’t think they have the ability to put something out that will (1) gain new fans, or (2) lose any current ones. Looking forward to both.

  • Okay, my picks and recommendations for today:

Nifrost – Motvind: srs, one of the best Pagan Black Metal albums OF THE YEAR. No jokes on this one, very pure distilled of the best Nature-worship druidic extreme music.

Witherscape – The Northern Sanctuary: if this album is as good as that song in which they murder the path of dependance, I’m sold! I think this will be better for me than their debut. HAIL SWÄNO!

Unmerciful – Ravenous Impulse: that’s brutal.

Nothing Lies Beyond – Fragile Reality: modern Melodeath with catchy choruses. Ignore the first mid-In Flames worship, it gets better in the chorus and the bridge/solo with some Arch Enemy touches.

    • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Unmerciful has a pretty brutal line-up too.

    • This is p good when Kotämaki enters with the clean vocals!

      • Abradolf Lincler

fully expect this album to contend with Ihsahn for my AOTY

      • Abradolf Lincler

        preordered white vinyl

      • Stockhausen

        I’m quite into this album.

    • Waynecro

I agree, Linkbro: That Nothing Lies Beyond song is pretty sweet.

    • PostBlackenedWhaleGaze

Dan Swano is a living legend.

    • Joaquin Stick

LINK! I literally just got around to listening to Witherscape! IT’S SO GOOD! I was looking for any mention of it on this toilet and I can’t believe this is the only one.

      • I’m finishing a review!! 😉

        • Joaquin Stick

THANK GOD lol. The toilet needs more Swano.

        • Dubbbz

          Ouch. Right in the heart.

    • Maik Beninton™

There is a lack of tipping on that video.

  • CyberneticOrganism

That Forty Winters track is good shit, sounds more like thrash

  • Heliocrat

Not exactly sure why but I really like the cover of that Anal Vomit/Ordo Caper split.

    • Dubbbz

Same, actually. It’s not what you’d expect.

    • Eliza

I like that it looks as if it was actually made with a paintbrush.

    • Stockhausen

I like it too. It catches you off guard quite a bit.

      • Heliocrat

I get the same feeling from it as with the cover of Obliteration’s Nekropsalms, weirdly avant-garde for a death metal cover without being pretentious looking if that makes any sense.

  • Now That’s What I Call Half-Assed Album Art Vol. 1

    • CyberneticOrganism

      • Waynecro, bro. That’s what all the super pros use.

  • Howard Dean

In other new release news: American sludge/noise/harsh noise wall band Sloth released their 207th single of 2016: “Show Flyer #15” –

I don’t know if it’s better than the classic single released on April 6th, “Vegan BJ,” but it’s close!

Also: the Indonesian ESL death metal/third world brutal death metal band Funeral Inception is releasing a new EP this week on Cerberus Productions. Here’s their bandcamp (not the new EP, but if you’re curious):

    • Dubbbz

Show Flyer #15 is a decent title.

      • Howard Dean

“If you liked Show Flyer #13 and #14, you’ll go crazy for Show Flyer #15!”

I thought “Vegan BJ” was a pretty good title for a single.

I’m no fan of harsh noise wall, but you’ve got to honor a band’s commitment/stupidity in releasing over 200 singles in a little over half of a year. Crazy stuff.

        • Dubbbz

Basically going the Phyllomedusa route of releasing an impossibly large flood of “music.”

        • Incontinent Gorilla Rodeo

Probably the only band that can outdo The Residents’ catalog within a year and a half.

    • brokensnow

      you’re right! This rocks!

  • Eliza

It’s a good week, I like most what’s listed here. That Avataria, or AvatariA, as they like to write it, video wins the hilariously bad video award of this week.

    • Incontinent Gorilla Rodeo

Lol, that drummer looks constipated and having a stroke through the whole video. Is it me, or is the singer lip syncing completely out of tune with the audio? Kinda reminds me of old kung fu movies, where the guys would start talking seconds after the audio was over.

  • I think the idea behind the new Defeated Sanity is they’re actually two separate EP’s released at the same time.

    • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

So they have said, but not releasing them as separate EPs but as one LP might not have been the best idea.

      • Yeah, probably. I’m curious to see how its sold, at any rate, if the two halves are separate or are divided up like Disc One or Disc Two, which at least encourages some kind of break in between.

  • 365ChaosRiddenDays

Defeated Sanity with Denouncement Pyre and Nuke for me this week and I have something to recommend:

INSANE VESPER – “Layil” ( Black Metal)
BAPTISM – “V: The Devil’s Fire” (Black Metal)
    PANZERBASTARD – “Motorheaten” (HC/Punk/Thrash)

  • Hans Müller

Not sure if Pestilent is stupid fun or just stupid. Or if the latter would make me enjoy them less.

  • Abradolf Lincler

i know this is OT but has anyone heard how Trumps wife got rick rolled last night?

    • Stockhausen

      That was truly top kek.

    • Incontinent Gorilla Rodeo

No idea, but from what I read, it was a circus/coup d’etat last night. Much popcorn was had!

  • I don’t know if this new Despised Icon is sufficiently TUFF enuff for me.

    • Lacertilian

  • These Harakiri for the Sky tracks are doing it for me, though.

    • Joaquin Stick

I done did one of them fancy reviews a few weeks ago.

      • You done did, didn’t you? I wasn’t in the mood for post-BM at the time, sadly.

      • Waynecro

Thank you again for that review. I’ve been playing a lot of Harakiri for the Sky since then. I need those feels when I’m choking back the tears during my postworkout shower.

  • Hans Müller

As of last week, new Fange is available digitally. Not usually big on Sludge, but these guys are pretty nice!

    • Dubbbz

Is this pronounced “fang” or “fanj”?

      • Hans Müller

The latter, but more like “fonj”.

      • I would say ask Randall Thor, but he’s pretty mistaken on how to pronounce “gif”, so…….

  • Matt Pike’s Sweaty Left Nipple

That Pestilent album is an odd one in that it’s sooooooo fucking BRUTAL and uses basically the same slam for the entire album, but it still somehow manages to be entertaining.

    • Hans Müller

I thought Abominable Putridity was all the BDM I ever needed, but these guys might change my mind.

      • Matt Pike’s Sweaty Left Nipple

For quality BDM check out Party Cannon, Iniquitous Deeds, Embodied Torment, Cerebral Effusion, Skinless, Castrensis, Brodequin, Vorarephilia, Maleceptor, Guttural Secrete, Kraanium, Kronos, Katalepsy, Pathology, Analepsy, Embalmed (TX), Purgatoire, Morphogenetic Malformation, Defeated Sanity’s previous 3 albums, Suffocation’s Human Waste EP and first 2 albums (Effigy of the Forgotten and Pierced From Within), Pyrexia’s first album Sermon of Mockery, Deeds of Flesh, Devourment, Internal Bleeding, and Disgorge.

        • Hans Müller

And thus he embarked on a month-long slam binge…

I’ve heard Katalepsy and quite liked them, so I guess it makes sense to start with Analepsy. Is there a Prolapsy, too?

  • megachiles

I’m super hype for the new Hammers of Misfortune, because John Cobbett is woke or bae or something.

  • Haha, that Orchidectomy shout out Dubz. A++++++

Just got my Unmerciful CD in the mail today! Time to be blasted!!!

  • Also, Nuke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Incontinent Gorilla Rodeo

Might have to check them out, since you’ve been singing their praises from the highest mountains left and right.

  • Incontinent Gorilla Rodeo

    Enigma started going tech death?!?!!?!?

  • Incontinent Gorilla Rodeo

And Tygers Of Pan Tang just announced that their new CD will be out on October 21st. Definitely cracking my wallet open for that one!

  • Waynecro

Svirnath sounds pretty cool, and I like what I’ve heard from Enigma.

  • Lord_Polymath

    Witherscape FTW!!!
