Mongrel’s Cross – Psalter of the Royal Dragon Court (Hells Headbangers) [Black Thrash]

Either something happened to my ears or the HHR brand of black thrash is getting better. Here we have razor-sharp, zig-zagging riffs that always surprise you enough to keep things interesting. These are complemented by straightforward, jackhammer drumming, which goes well with the thrash and black metal parts, but slows down often enough to make room for touches of heavy metal. Definitely give “From Transylvania…” a go. 8/3/18 (Hans)

Hadal Maw is the sort of band you listen to when you want to feel bad; even by dissonant death metal standards, this is pretty heavy. It’s pretty different as well; you can hear their influences (Gorguts in particular), but they don’t play to quite the same strokes as their forebears. It’s unique stuff, and hopefully the rest of the album holds up as well. 8/3/18 (Spear)
