This Toilet Tuesday (6/14/16)

The sea is peaceful tonight. You are drifting off to a soothing sleep, lulled by the gentle rocking of the ship and quiet breeze, when a pounding comes at your door. “Maintenance!” a voice calls from the other side. You open your door in a haze, the jolt from the sudden knock starting to give way to groggy resentment. “The head’s clogged again. I think there’s something wrong with the tank, ‘cuz it’s backing up way too often. I’m gonna need you to take a look at that ASAP; don’t want it overflowing in the middle of the night.” You nod sleepily and grab your tools, making your way to the bowels of the ship.

Upon arrival, you immediately notice the septic system making an unhealthy gurgling noise. You check the gauge at the side; it seems the old tank isn’t draining properly. You groan and grab the long wooden rod at the side of the tank; you’ll have to unclog it manually. Climbing atop the malfunctioning machine, you open the hatch at the top and begin poking around the sewage with the rod, trying to find the clog. The rod finally hits something solid, and you start poking at it. Without warning, the rod is jerked down sharply, pulling you into the tank headfirst. Choking on raw sewage, you try to pull yourself back up, but something coils around your neck. You claw desperately at the tendril to no avail. Something sharp pokes at your throat, and blinding pain shoots through you as you feel your flesh ripped open. Bleeding out and feces filling your lungs, darkness takes you quickly.

Submit to the lurker in the deep. This is Toilet Tuesday.

terra tenebrosa

Terra Tenebrosa – The Reverses (Debemur Morti Productions) [Black Metal/Hardcore]
Listen to “Ghost at the End of the Rope,” “The End is Mine to Ride”

Terra Tenebrosa have built a career crafting otherworldly, deeply unsettling avant-garde extreme metal that has always been difficult to pin down yet perpetually interesting. After a three year gap, the band is back with a surprisingly more accessible sound, if the first two tracks from The Reverses are anything to go by. Simple riffs and rhythms lead the way and provide a somewhat disorienting juxtaposition against the churning electronic atmosphere and nightmarish vocals. Will the rest of the album match up to the band’s horrific discography, or will a stripped-down approach open this band to wider recognition? I guess we’ll find out on Friday. FFO: Howls of Ebb, Blut Aus Nord, AEvangelist 6/17/16 (W.)

Winterhymn – Blood & Shadow (SoundAge Productions) [Folk Metal]
Listen to “Blood of the Moon”

I don’t usually get excited about self-described folk metal bands, as many of them tend to be cheap Ensiferum or Eluveitie knockoffs. Winterhymn, on the other hand, shows that there are still fresh ideas on the pseudo-melodeath/kind-of-thrashy end of the spectrum. “Blood of the Moon” has everything I want from a folk metal song; gloriously powerful vocals, energetic riffs, and violins and keyboards that actually add to the music instead of distracting from it. If the rest of the album holds up, Winterhymn will have a place in Valhalla alongside the genre’s best. 6/17/16 (Spear)

Excited about Wayfarerererer. Black metal with just enough progressive tendencies to keep me happy.

    • CyberneticOrganism

Yeah that streaming track is hitting the spot this morning.

  • jamming dat new Gojira album on the YouTubes. let’s see how it goes!

    BM B&M

    • Dubbbz

I thought the new song, The Shooting Star was boring as frank.

      • i think their boring AF font should have tipped us off (RFI)

        • Dubbbz

          Needs more Zeuhl

        • CyberneticOrganism

          Univers or GTFO

          • Mother Shabubu

            Dafont >>>>>

      • oh sh*t, i just peeped the track listing. Shooting Star IS the moody intro song that i lieked. d’oh! okay i’m gonna shut up about new Gojira now.

        • Dubbbz

I don’t understand you one lick, but I do really like you.

          • i figured out what happened: i initially wrote that i was “Jamming” the new Gojira, when i fact i was just “listening to” the new Gojira.

my thoughts are similar to this: when i want a band to crush me, i’m all in. when i know a band has the ability to crush me, and they DON’T; then i worry. my thoughts always go to this: “they’re trying to sell more albums”. it’s a compulsion that i cannot help, after just about every hard rock band i liked did in the late 90’s / early 00’s.

so when Gojira did a cool, melodic intro song (The Shooting Star) it caught me off guard and sounded good. then it was right back to the semi-metal stuff (groove metal, if you will) that puts me right to sleep.

i guess it’s similar to watching a movie directed by somebody that you know is a skilled director, but you feel deep down in your gut is holding back.

          • Dubbbz

            What about Devin Townsend, then?

          • last good thing he did was “Addicted”, IMHO

          • Dubbbz

Ahhh, now I see you clearly, gunslinger.

      • Joaquin Stick

Frank is a pretty good movie actually.

        • CyberneticOrganism

    • I have low hopes for it after the first song.

      • strangely, i dug the first song. pretty moody, melodic intro. but nobody wants an entire album of moody, melodic Gojira :/

        • Dubbbz

Wait, are JBing on us? I thought you posted some big rant about them going poppy and selling out?

          • “i dug the first song” … “first”
            -JJM, 6 minutes ago

          • Dubbbz

Oh, that was number 2? I rescind my razz.

          • now i’m torn between my distaste for the new album and my love of Dubbbz brand razz!

          • Mother Shabubu

Indeed he did. I believe he also brought up how enjoyed Periphery and some other bands we’d consider “pop” metal.

            Book ’em, Dubbso.

          • opinions have to be justified around here

        • Scrimm

Some of us don’t want an entire album of any kind of Gojira.

        • I meant the first track they released, the oddly rock-tinged track that didn’t really work for them.

          • oh i gotcha. no matter which track we’re discussing… it probably isn’t a good.

    • Stanley

It upsets me to see Gojira labeled as groove metal.

      • megachiles

        Save The Whales Metal?

        • Tronc McBeefyBeardloaf

      • Yeah, they need to Getcha Pull more in the groove department.

      • Maik Beninton™

Groove Metal = Pantera and bands that sound like Pantera.

        • Stanley

I guess what I meant to say, is that it upsets me because that is what they’ve become.

      • Spear

Listen to that first track and tell me I’m wrong.

        • I agree with your label, pointy stick man.

        • we’re upset that they ARE groove metal now. time to burn our old Gojira t-shirts and make the metal tmz headlines

          • Tronc McBeefyBeardloaf

Definitely not burning mine! Far too much sentimental value with that thing. Wish I would’ve gotten one of the more expensive and cooler ones at the concert though.

          • i was just joking bby. keep it! but make sure to write “just their old stuff” with a sharpie on the shirt

          • Tronc McBeefyBeardloaf

Lol! It’s the ‘Where Dragons Dwell’ one, so I think that’d go without saying.

          • so what’s YOUR take on the new album? the whole thing’s on youtube if you haven’t heard it yet…

          • Tronc McBeefyBeardloaf

Haven’t heard the whole album, but so far it’s Gojira by the numbers. They’ve pretty much drove their own formula into the ground at this point. I’ll give the whole album a listen, but I’m not expecting much.

          • here’s where i will differ from you: i do NOT hear “Gojira by the numbers”, rather some easy-listening that will sell thousands of records.
get back to me, i’m curious about your opinion. you’ve always got some interesting and well-thought-out ones!

          • Tronc McBeefyBeardloaf

            Up for another record swap?

          • yup! start thinking about your choice, and i shall do the same.

          • Tronc McBeefyBeardloaf

            Will do!

        • CyberneticOrganism

Gojira Releases New Album, Gets Pull

        • Stanley

You are not wrong. But I won’t listen to that first track. I did that once.

  • Wow, this Winterhymn sounds awesome, Spear. The clean vocals reminds me of Vintersorg.

    Thanks for the recommendation, mang-o!

  • EsusMoose

Gotta remember to remember to listen to Gojita, Sewercide and the Blunt ass nord split later this week.

  • Maik Beninton™

That lolbuttz: first thing, promo?! Fuck you. Second that beesy guitar.

  • Abradolf Lincler

ive seen that Terra Tenebrosa name pushed around a couple times, and i of course am a fan of many things Debemur Morti. will check.

  • Terra Tenebrosa holy shiv!

    • CyberneticOrganism

      Listening now, it’s mean.

      • I give the artwork alone 10/10!

        • it’s Jacob’s cabin from LOST

          • My elite-poser status keeps me from understanding your reference.

          • it’s perfectly acceptable to not have watched LOST. if anything, it saved you from the devastation that was season six.
            TL;DR: bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

          • Dubbbz

I’m in the same boat as GL. Actually, I’d say I’ve missed the majority of the cultural phenomenon tv shows. I haven’t watched LOST, the Walking Dead, True Detective, GOT, Breaking Bad, Mad Men…

          • *flip phone smile face emoji*

          • CyberneticOrganism

I wish I had back the 400 hours of life I wasted watching past season 1 of LOST.

          • now THAT is heartless. S2 was a glorious sci-fi romp (flawed though it may have been)

      • Dubbbz

My friend, I’d go back and check out some of the older stuff. Way more harrowing and spoopy than these two tracks.

  • Thoroughly excited for the new Gojira. I have enjoyed all the tracks so far, looking quite forward to Friday!

    • Tronc McBeefyBeardloaf

I’m of two minds on the new stuff. Not bad, but so far, it sounds like pretty much everything they’ve ever done, right down to the lyrics. I’m going to be the odd one out on this one, but I really think they need to add keyboards.

  • J.R.™

  • Count_Breznak

Those Ribspreader songs ? They aren’t bad.

  • Ay, my guitarist produced that new Ribspreader album. He’s also in the band now as lead guitarist.

  • Janitor Jim Duggan

    Yay, the new Gojira!

  • Waynecro

That new Wayfarer sounds pretty great.

    • more beer

They are pretty good live too. I will probably go see them again on the 29th.

      • Waynecro

  • Tronc McBeefyBeardloaf

I had to squint my eyes for a second, but I thought that was the new Wintersun for a second. *shakes my fist at the screen Colonel Klink style*

  • Hans Müller

Some good stuff here, but… Macabra sounds borderline lolbuttz. What’s up with that mix? The effect on the vocals? Is anyone in this band except the singer? What happened here?

  • jberd

Wow. That Timeless Necrotears music is one of the worse things I’ve heard since that French “Fadades” guy on youtube.
