This Toilet Tuesday (5/5/15)

This can’t be happening, you think to yourself as you’re dragged into the meeting room. After six hours of non-stop work, you were caught by your boss on the way to the bathroom. You deserve a break; hell, you need a break before the dark omen your innards portend comes to pass. It seems fate has it in for you today, though, as you sit down with your fellow employees, with no clue of how long this will take.

Your boss cuts straight to the chase: the company has been steadily losing money for the past two years, and there’s no sign of recovery in sight. Your stomach sinks when he says that some positions need to be eliminated. You need this job. And a goddamn bathroom. A few more words are said, but you barely hear them over the blood pumping in your ears. The meeting finally adjourns and you stand up to leave, ready for sweet release. Just as you’re about to make it to the door, your boss calls you back over. You groan and sit back down as the last few employees filter out. “I’m sorry,” he says somberly, “but you’ve got two weeks left here. Though it pains me to say it, your job was the most expendable. I’m truly-” but he’s cut off by a tremendous rumbling. The stress has gotten the better of you, and your bowels unleash their fury upon the meeting room. The force of the rectal explosion sends you rocketing skywards; you accidentally catch your boss’s chin with your fist, carrying him upwards in a liquid brown Shoryuken of death. His body smashes through the ceiling above you and you see a couple of your panicked coworkers jump out of the way. As you land, you decide that maybe two weeks is a little too long to stick around.

Release your rage; this is Toilet Tuesday.

Steve Von Till – A Life Unto Itself (Neurot Recordings) [Folk]
Listen to “In Your Wings”

Before I describe Steve Von Till’s solo album A Life Unto Itself, let me get something out of the way. This isn’t metal. At all. However, there is a palpable gravity to these western dirges that is distinctly Neurosis-esque in nature. Steve Von Till injects every note with a lifetime’s worth of sorrow and longing, and listening to “In Your Wings” is tantamount to watching a tornado destroy everything you love in your dusty little cowboy town. Interestingly, this sounds closer to Scott Kelly’s solo material than it does Von Till’s own Harvestman project. Both are unmistakably heavy in a wind-weathered sort of way. FFO: Scott Kelly and the Road Home, Wino, Townes van Zandt (W.)

sorrow plagues

Sorrow Plagues – An Eternity of Solitude (Independent) [Blackgaze]
Stream

The blackgaze market has become heavily saturated, but that’s no reason to ignore a quality gift horse, especially when it only costs 3 Good Boy Points to look it in the mouth. Sorrow Plagues do well to avoid the often clunky structures of many of their contemporaries by injecting orchestrated bringing-those-feels sections directly into the composition of each song. These little moments of reprieve seem to dangle hope right before the listener’s ears before tearing it away completely. If you like feeling ways about things, don’t skip this. FFO: Violet Cold, Deafheaven, Alcest (W.)

heathen beast

Heathen Beast – The Carnage of Godhra (Transcending Obscurity) [Blackened Death]
Listen

It’s usually pretty hard for me to get excited about a three-song EP (unless you’re called Fuck the Facts and your album is called Abandoned), but I was hooked the moment that first sliding riff came in. Pulling no small amount of influence from the folk music of their native India, Heathen Beast blend nasty blackened death metal with hand drums and sitar to great effect. At a measly $2, this is definitely worth your cash, and it will leave you craving more. (Spear)

      From the Iron City. Nice!

  • Zephyr was my online gaming alias for years. Too bad this Zephyr is about as average/sub-par as you can get 🙁

I just might listen to that new Steve Von Till later, I like that dark folky shit.

I’m a Tom Waits n00b but I like a few of his jams.

Awesome intro, Spear! *clap clap* Now I want to poo my boss (oh, wait, I always wanted to poop that bad person).

Today is also Bill Ward’s birthday. This applies to anyone from the original Black Sabbath formation, but this dude’s beats and fills were very responsible for getting me into music and paying attention to something other than guitars when I was a kid.

Also, Wicked Inquisition are my homeboys. Really excited for their full-length to come out soon; this new release is just their demo on tape.

    • Spear

I played a show with Wicked Inquisition awhile back and have been eagerly awaiting a full-length from them since. They’s good people.

    • Dagon

I think W wrote about them before, or maybe it was someone else. I had forgotten about them, but after clicking the link and seeing the artwork I immediately remembered.

  • Maik Beninton

Some weird black’n roll (?) on that lolbuttz.

    • The start of the song was very lolbuttz to me. But it gets better.

      Also, the cover is lolbuttz.

  • tertius_decimus

Pitbulls in the Nursery? OMFG, that track rips! I’m happy camper!

Their debut album sits on the top of my DM list.

Just played Sorrow Plagues, I didn’t thought I would be listening to static noises.

    • I’m suddenly much more interested.

It’s got fog and trees on the cover…that’s good enough for me.

They aren’t as evil as the typeface would have you believe.

        • Pagliacci is Kvlt O)))

I’m halfway through the album. Definitely a nice slice of treeandfogcore so far though.

That new Kamelot is pretty good. The new singer is no Khan, but still a suitable enough replacement.

    • The Beargod

      Khan was no Karevik
      FTFY

      • Actiondonkey

This is a no contest. Khan has crazy range; one of the most talented operatic metal vocalists ever. Literally, no contest at all.

        • The Beargod

Karevik is only far superior singer and writer-of-melodies.

  • Tyree

Hmm, I’ll have to check out that Arcturus and Satan’s Wrath. Too much shit to listen to.

    This all day though:

  • That House of Atreus is nomnomnomnom!!

Didn’t knew they already put the entire streaming.

    • Dean the P.I. Staker

The album has been streaming for a few weeks. The CD is out, too. I received mine in the mail two weeks ago. I dunno why the release date and the actual release of the album were so different.

      • Did you listened to it full? How’s it?

        • Dean the P.I. Staker

I’ve listened to it several times. It’s terrific. A nice continuation to their Into the Brazen Bull EP. Met all my expectations. Helps relieve my withdrawals from the Arghoslent hiatus/ inactivity.

  • Shrimp in a Pizza Box

    Slamborghini ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).
Basically nothing released this week apparently, and 90% of the stuff that released is not on spotify, this makes me a sad shrimp.

    • At least you go today with the idea of splashing your boss with shrimp pupú.

      • Shrimp in a Pizza Box

Sadly I don’t even have that because I’m still in school with no job.

        • A Blue Whale’s Used Condom

  • JamesGrimm

    pretty light week.

  • Guacamole Jim

That intro. Well done, sir. I’ve had dreams of doing just that.

    New Kamelot >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

    • Maik Beninton

In b4 it appears in #Linkrecommendationsoftoday.

      • I listened to it yesterday. I liked it, but I still need to re-spin it because it’s very long!

    • J.R.

Veil of Elysium is so classic, but End of Innocence really tickles my pickle. The two “slower songs” are probably the weakest “slower songs” from any of their albums, Citizen Zero gives me that March of Mephisto vibe with that intro…all the songs are really really good. As an album it might not work so well, but each individual song (minus those slow ones) are total jamtopia.

That song really did nothing for me. I’m hoping the rest of the album is much better. Oh Sensibility was so killer, be hard to out do.

      • Celtic Frosty

Confession: I haven’t streamed the song yet. I’m listening to Sorrow Plague first.

        • Tyree

Let me know your thoughts, I like there more psychedelic sounding jammy shit honestly.

          • Celtic Frosty

So far it kinda sounds like if Monster Magnet were on even MORE drugs. I like it. Still sounds plenty psychedelic, just not as jam-heavy, as you said.

          • Celtic Frosty

Finished the track. I liked it a lot, actually, but you’re right that it isn’t as good as Oh Sensibility, at least if the entire album follows this path. I’m not flushing it, though.

          • Tyree

Not bad, but I was expecting more. I may have hyped it up too much. It happens.

  • I am not going to lie, I am pretty stoked for next weeks release for Veil of Maya. Although stoked, I want to claw out my ears due to the vocals on this song.

    • Veil of Maya is great. Veil of Maya with this vocalist makes them sound like any other shitty band trying to ride the trends.

    • someone call @365daysofhorror:disqus!

  • Celtic Frosty

I’m loving the quality “blackgaze” (I call it post black metal) coming out this year. An Autumn for Crippled Children, Violet Cold, Sannhet, Addaura, Bosse-de-Nage, and now this Sorrow Plagues record. The genre may be getting saturated, but there’s plenty of cream (heh) rising to the top.

    • Seconded. That Sorrow Plagues is true and real.

    • A Blue Whale’s Used Condom

AAFCC is pretty good. Blackgaze is something I’m slowly getting into. Only problem I have is that much of the bands sound almost exactly alike, or they’re trying to redo My Bloody Valentine’s ‘Loveless’ completely, but just adding the snarly BM vocals (I’m looking at you, Deafheaven!)..

      • No.

        • A Blue Whale’s Used Condom
          • Linking blackgaze directly to Loveless is a bit like linking every metal band ever to Maiden. There’s a correlation, a chain of influence played out over time–but imitation it is not.

Rant complete: But I still do not feel better.

(Post Rant: If I hear one more person lump Bosse-de-Nage in with blackgaze–or use the word “slint” in the same sentence–I am going to lose my shit!)

          • A Blue Whale’s Used Condom

Didn’t say all, but quite alot of them do try to retread Loveless, esp. Deafheaven. It’s the first thing that came to mind when I heard Sunbather.

          • Meh, it’s fair to hear Loveless in the music. But “retread”? Really? “Infuse,” maybe–just maybe. (Damn you, I’ve kept my nose out of the Deafheaven debate, and now you’ve tricked me into dipping it in. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuk.)

    • An Autumn for Crippled Children is one of my favorites to come out this year. So good.

  • Suprised Antigama hasn’t put out a stream yet, just that one song. I’m dying to hear the rest.

Great intro Spear! I envisioned Ryu from Street Fighter delivering an uppercut with a diarrhea rocket trail coming out of his ass.

  • Scrimm

Welp, looks like Dark Descent is getting more of my money.

  • Guppusmaximus

I think this is an appropriate response when some corporate ball-licking douchenozzle assists with downsizing…

  • Guppusmaximus

The music on Steve Von Till’s album has a great atmospheric sound and draws you in but his vocals killed it for me. Personally, I don’t think he can sing….just my .02

A new And So I Watch You From Afar record is out today and I had no idea; I feel like a failure. 🙁

  • Mother Shabubu III 12 BRICKS

Antigama doesn’t get enough love. Sonically, they are almost like a missing link between Napalm Death and Brutal Truth.

    • imagine my joy when i discovered that i pre-ordered the new album over my drunken weekend!

      • Sir Tapir the Based™

Drunk McNulty has a better taste in music?

      • Ted Nü-Djent ™

Apparently you’re one step closer to being as cool as me

    • Count_Breznak

The Antigama/Psychofagist split tho..ugh. Love everything else by both bands, but that one was awful.

  • A Blue Whale’s Used Condom

Oh, and She Past Away put up a teaser for the new album yesterday.

  • Cave of Swimmers stole their name from my wife’s vag

  • A Blue Whale’s Used Condom

I like Paradise Lost, but this new video and song are hilariously lolbuttz. No tendies for Paradise Lost *slaps their hands away*

    • Nick should just stick with Bloodbath

      • A Blue Whale’s Used Condom

He should quit trying to do death metal vocals. He sounds like I do when I’m pushing out an upper decker into the toilet.

      • Scrimm

        Ugh

        • bro? BRO?

          • Scrimm

Sorry but I still think he was an awful choice for Bloodbath.

          • i don’t love him in Bloodbath, but their music slays!

          • Scrimm

Used to slay. Sorry to disagree, but can’t find one redeeming thing about the last two albums.

Latest release by ‘Hive’ pretty much just snuck up on me today: https://hive1.bandcamp.com/album/elpis

‘Elpis’ is the Ancient Greek personification of Hope, so this probably isn’t black metal for grim purists. I only barely started listening to it just now, so I have no other comment yet.

  • Matt Pike’s Sweaty Left Nipple

    I’ll just leave this here…
