This Toilet Tuesday (5/30/17)

Welcome to This Toilet Tuesday! As I made the brilliant decision to write this at work and everything here is trying to kill me, I’m going to keep this brief. We’ve got lots of good stuff this week, including a bunch from bands I’d never heard of prior to this weekend, so dig in and you’re likely to find something cool. Black metal is particularly abundant this week, but there should be something for everyone down there.

Unleash the Archers – Apex (Napalm Records) [Power Metal]
Listen to “The Matriarch,” “Cleanse the Bloodlines”

Unleash the Archers have steadily improved with each release, and while Time Stands Still set a high bar, the two singles from Apex show that upward trajectory has no signs of stopping. “The Matriarch” showcases the band’s “fun” side, with high-energy driving riffs and catchy hooks. “Cleanse the Bloodlines” is big and epic, darker in tone, lacking neither melody nor headbangability. It goes without saying that power metal fans should have this on their radar, but I think people turned off be the cheesier side of the genre might be able to get into this one as well. 6/2/17 (Spear)

Birdflesh/Organ Dealer – Birdflesh/Organ Dealer (split- Horror Pain Gore Death) [Grindcore]

NEW BIRDFLESH! This is great news. Is there a full length in the immediate future? I fucking hope so. Birdflesh is so underappreciated. These new tracks depart slightly from previous works. They are a little more on the deathgrind spectrum. I’ve noticed a little bit of a black metal vibe to some of the earlier songs. Nonetheless, the songs are tight as fuck. If you’re interested in getting into grind but are stuck at that death metal phase, this could be a good place to start. Definitely a lot more grooves than previous works. If you liked the last Rotten Sound or Venomous Concept albums, you’re likely going to like the new Birdflesh. The new Organ Dealer rips fucking hard. But what do you expect from a band named Organ Dealer? Again, if you liked that last Rotten Sound (It was a badass album, ok!) or Gadget, then you will surely enjoy Organ Dealer. With a price of $6.66 for the digital release ($10 for CD)…you can’t go wrong and it’s a good way to make up for the fact you likely missed out on limited AxTx release that came out last week. 6/2/17 (BertBanana)

Phobia – Lifeless God (Willowtip Records) [Grindcore]
Listen to “Corpse Slayer,” “Damaged”

I’m going to be blunt: “Damaged” is probably my favourite grind song thus far this year. Combined with how ridiculous last year’s Phobia album was, my expectations are really high for this one. Phobia rarely disappoints, so if you’re a grinder, you might as well just cough up the $7 for the CD now. Even if you aren’t into grind, just pitch the $12 for a t-shirt. The gory details of El Presidente Trump being obliterated is universally satisfying. However, non-grinders, Phobia is a great starting point and both tracks are rather accessible songs. 6/2/17 (BertBanana)

  • Joaquin Stick

Elder is the big one for me this week. I’ll have to sample some of those black metal titles today.

    • The Tetrachord of Archytas

That is my exact disposition as well

  • Spear

This was pretty cool. Folky death-doom with nasty bass and the guitar swapped out for a violin.

  • Howard Dean

That Unleash the Archers sounds pretty decent this Tuesday-that-feels-like-Monday morning. Their vocalist is kinda hawt, too:

    • Jack Bauer

Yea she can actually pull off the nose ring too. Lots of people can’t.

      • Howard Dean

Agreed, Monsieur Bauer. I’m not a big fan of facial jewelry, but she wears it well.

        • Jack Bauer

I’m a fan of rings like this or a nose stud if done tastefully. But those fuckin rings that make people look like cartoon pigs are things i cannot stand.

          • Howard Dean

Yeah, definitely not a fan of the septum bull ring thing [shudder]. I don’t particularly like eyebrow, lip, or the more egregiously mutilating ear piercings (gauges), either. I’m a simple dude.

          • Jack Bauer

Ah septum piercings, couldn’t think of the word. Yea fuck those. Eyebrow lip and also tongue piercings just seem like they would get in the way and are a bad life decision. Don’t get me started on gauges lol.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Eyebrow piercings are trashy, lip piercings can be alright.
Tongue piercings however, I definitely don’t mind when it comes to extracurricular activities.

    • Pierre Generic

I have a weird thing for Canadian girls so I wasn’t surprised when I watched a video of her talking about the Apex album on Youtube and heard the accent. Plus in the second picture she looks a little like Emily Perkins from the Ginger Snaps movies.

  • New Mutoid Man on Friday, expect an album full of bangers like this one.

    • anesthesiac

Listened to this one and “melt your mind” more or less on repeat all weekend. They have a tour kicking off June 4th, with Helms Alee opening. Much hype.

      • I want to get out and see them on this tour. That will be a challenge because weeknight shows.

        • anesthesiac

Yeah, weeknights can be a struggle. Fortunately for me the Atl show landed on a Friday.

    • tigeraid

I don’t know WHY I like Mutoid Man… But from what I’ve heard, I like it.

  • Wet W’s Whistle

  • Edward

I’m really stoked to hear that Birdflesh/Organ Dealer split in its entirety. Also, new Wode and new Endon are either out or coming out this week!

    • Iron Tarkus

Forgot about the new Wode album. Their self titled was great and is a steal at name-your-price on Bandcamp.

    • more beer

I saw Birdflesh last October hell of a set. This Saturday seeing both The Drip and Phobia should be a killer show.

  • Señor Jefe El Rossover

  • Primordial Chaos

New song by Vallenfyre, new album out this Friday:

  • Iron Tarkus

Looks like Phobia, Vallenfyre, and that Birdflesh/Organ Dealer split for me.

  • Dumpster Lung

Excellent stuff, dudes! I sat this one out (literally) as I was on the road until after 6AM this morning. Been trying not to skip any weeks. Feel like all the practice will pay off and turn into improvement/some kinda distinct tone at some point.

But hoooooooooly shit what a good goddamned weekend.

  • Rick Chard

    New Tod Huetet Uebel. Nice!

Can anyone recommend some power metal where the production isn’t polished as fuck?

As a guide I’m thinking along the lines of early Helloween and Blind Guardian.

    • Jack Bauer

    • tigeraid

What you seek is TRUE metal. Cirith Ungol, Early Iced Earth, early Manowar, early Grand Magus, that sort of sound? Then FEAST upon these:

      Eternal Champion
      Helion Prime
      Mega Colossus
      Avalon Steel
      Lady Beast
      Angel Sword
      Grey Wolf

      (most on your friendly neighbourhood

      • NDG

Yes, yes, of course! I am ONLY interested in METAL of the TRUE variety and this is good stuff. Already a big fan of newer bands you list like EC and Angel Sword but also stuff like Magic Circle, High Spirits, Dawnbringer, Sumerlands, etc.

A lot of the others you drop I will check out. I’ve got a full day of mind numbing tasks at work today so will work down the list.

Emblem is sounding good right now…great suggestion! Thanks, tigger!

        • tigeraid

Magic Circle and Sumerlands > ****

  • tigeraid

  • Yeah, definitely checking out that Phobia record when it releases.

  • Wow, this first Unleash the Archers song sounds great, good pick, Sir Spearrow.
