This Toilet Tuesday (5/24/16)

Welcome to another Toilet Tuesday! We’ve got a ton of awesome new releases this week, and W, Karhu, and some guy named Stockhausen are here to tell you about some of the best. There’s plenty more where that came from, though; be sure to check out that list below and share your picks in the comments.

giant of the mountain

Giant of the Mountain – The Empty Quarter (Burning Dogma Records) [Death Metal]
Listen to “Instinct,” “Crawl”

Giant of the Mountain has been around for a while now, and if you still haven’t heard them, now is the chance to make your life right. The Dallas death metal trio evokes every bit of that name, while adding a touch of nearly folk-like melodicism and more than a healthy amount of sludge. That’s not to say they don’t get up and move, however, as you’ll discover in the two tracks above. Flurries of technicality and speedy riffage make for an excellently balanced product, and headbanging of all varieties will surely ensue. My band had the privilege of playing with them a few years ago, and I’ve enjoyed following them as they get better and better with each release. 5/27/16 (Stockhausen)

in twilight's embrace

In Twilight’s Embrace – Trembling (Arachnophobia Records) [Death Metal]

I can’t decide whether the name “In Twilight’s Embrace” sounds like a doofy power metal band or a cheesy folk metal band. At the end of the day, though, it doesn’t matter, because In Twilight’s Embrace is a death metal band that absolutely rips. There are only three songs on their forthcoming EP, which is just enough to hook us listeners, rip us apart with vitriolic fury, and abandon us to crawl on bloody stumps toward their discography and beg for more. The ever-turbulent riffing and drumming absolutely deliver, and the raspy, venomous bark from vocalist Cyprian Łakomy completes the package in style. 5/25/16 (Stockhausen)

Korgonthurus – Vuohen siunaus (Woodcut Records) [Black Metal]

I don’t have much to say about Korgonthurus that you won’t figure out in the first thirty seconds of “Vuohen Sunaus.” The band rrrriiiiiiiips and teeeearrrrs, playing a fast and loose take on shredding black metal with plenty of thrash influence. It’s violent, ugly, and misanthropic, loaded with big riffs and nasty screams. If you like nasty Finnish black metal, don’t miss it. FFO: Sacrilegious Impalement, Behexen, Horna 5/27/16 (W.)

haast's eagled

Haast’s Eagled – II: For Mankind (Holy Roar Records) [Girthy Doom]
Listen to “The Uncle”

eagled 5/27/16 (W.)

Behexen – The Poisonous Path (Debemur Morti) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Umbra Luciferi,” “Chalice of the Abyssal Water”

The Poisonous Path appears to take Behexen halfway between their own past and Sargeist, which ought to be no news – vocalist Hoath Torog and drummer Horns played in the band until last year, and guitarist Shatraug (who’s last Behexen record this is) is the mastermind behind it. Neglecting the death-ier elements from Nightside Eclipse was a smart move, The Poisonous Path brings back the remarkability and memorability of their earlier material. Hoath Torog’s voice may have come down from the razor sharp shriek to a gravel-gurgling rasp, but the riffs make up for any shortcomings in other departments. 5/27/16 (Karhu)

Vainaja – Verenvalaja (Svart Records) [Death/Doom]
Listen to “Risti,” “Usva”

Heavier, thicker, more atmospheric, crushing-ier – if not as catchy – than the debut. Hecking good. 5/27/16 (Karhu)

    Pumped for Gutter Instinct.
Interested in that Korgonthurus now too.

  • Edward/Breegrodamus™

Need to check out that Dead Cowboy’s Sluts, hot damn.

    • Dead Cowboy is Sluts

      • Edward/Breegrodamus™

Think about if it was Dead Cowboys’ Sluts, that would totally flip the script.

    • Phil Zepain

      DCS are the shit !

      • hey. hey you! your album was the sixth album i purchased on bandcamp! i still jam it to this day. how have you been?? welcome to the Toilet!

        • Phil Zepain

Hey ! Thank you so much, The Line Between lives in you ! 🙂 I am doing well thanks, I have been lurking in here for months, good reviews, good comments and excellent “tech-death thursdays”. I came out of the closet for my bros in DCS, same town, same pubs, same stages often.
Thank you for your warm welcome !

      • Welcome to the Toilet!

        • Phil Zepain

Thanks George ! I am honored to have been flushed down here !

  • New Withered is fucking good. Also, can’t wait to hear that Gutter Instinct album!

    • The_Dude

I absolutely love that Withered album. First album I’ve listened to by them as well.

      • RAD! Yeah, I first heard them live. They opened for 1349 and Marduk. I was completely blown away. Catch them live if you get the chance.

        • The_Dude

Will definitely do if they ever come close. 1349 plus Marduk and Withered, sounds like that was pretty wicked show!

    • Dubs

Yah man, that Withered album rules.

    • Edward/Breegrodamus™

That El-Ahrairah is pretty good, huh?

      • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

        What Fall of Efrafa?

        • Edward/Breegrodamus™

Sorry, that probably required some explanation. I peeped a song premier at another site this morning by the band El-Ahrairah which was real solid, and then went exploring some of their other music and noticed Tyree had acquired one of their older demos on Bandcamp.

  • Eliza

Sometimes, an awesome gif is the best review.

    • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

Quite. However I prefer the over used meme to deliver the goods.

  • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Korgonthurus has Corvus, Horna’s ex-vocalist famed for his painful sounding shrieks. They have made some dsbm-like stuff in the past too. Don’t miss ’em.

    • Dubs

Yes, one of the thing’s I saw when checking that song out was that it varies wildly from some of their past material.

  • Elegant Gazing Globe

    Dehuman Reign is fun DM

  • Vault Dweller

I see W is harvesting his real-life nightmares as review fodder now!

  • Sir Tapir The Based

    This Tapir needs that Behexen.

    • Joaquin Stick

That was my first click this morning. I am awake now.

  • We now have 2 In Twilight’s Embrace reviews. Let’s go for the hat trick!

    • Super intense, man. Loved your mini-review!

      Thanks for sharing!

  • Spear

Check out Brymir if you’re into the Wintersun/Frosttide/Æther Realm school of melodeath at all. You won’t be disappointed.

  • megachiles

    Ded at Girthy Doom.

I’m eagerly awaiting some Turgid Sludge or Vantablack Metal.

  • Gunter: I’ve got a great new band name!
    Horst: What is it?
    Gunter: TROLLGASM!
Horst: Haha that’s funny. But seriously, we should name our band
Gunter: *runs under a bridge and jerks off onto Horst’s favorite shirt*
    Horst: Dude, what the fuck?!
Gunter: U MAD BRO?!!? *goes back under bridge and waits for 3 goats to cross*

    • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

Is this a future BW23 sneak peak?

  • The_Dude

Can’t wait to listen that new Katalepsy, the single sounded very promising. Too bad I’m stuck at work 🙁

  • Janitor Jim Duggan

Electric Taurus and Headless have my attention.

  • Ayreonaut

I love the allman brothers band

    • You avatar is dope. For reasons only obvious to you and I.

      • step up to the 5.0l game

      • Ayreonaut

Haha yes… Right now I have three 4.0s… At one point a couple years ago I had 5 and was building one as a stroker

  • will blast dat behexen when i get home. perhaps that korgonthurus as well

  • 365ChaosRiddenDays

Gutter Instinct, Gruesome and Withered for me in these days and finally this Friday the new album by Behexen will be released.

  • brokensnow

    wooo, new order of israfel

    • brokensnow

Lacuna Coil is pretty bitchin too.

  • This is a good week on releases for me, pretty dark week, too.

I’m interested in Vainaja, Behexen, Seventh Xul, Gutter Instinct and In Twilight’s Embrace. With that last record, I’m deeply stoked based on what I’ve heard on the links that 365 shared last week in his minireview. Last record of them had a two featurings from Tompa Lindberg and that alone is a seal of approval from me.

    Good round, guys!

W., that Hobbit gif was spot-on 😉 loved it!

Finally, that Omen release is super lolbuttz. What happened with Battle Cry style? 🙁

    • i’m jamming In Twilight’s Embrace in memory of Lonk from Pennsylvania

      • This song is cool. A mix between old MDM style with acoustics and a bit of MBM.

      • Representing Pennsylvania from the P to the A, you jagoffs!

        – Lonk, from Pennsylvania

        • bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

        • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

Have an upovte for your handle and the use of the work Jagoff! I only regret having but a single upvpote to give…

          • He’s like the Pennsylvanian Pitbull version of the Metal blogosphere.

          • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

      • Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow

        Tis some good jams!

  • Matt Pike’s Sweaty Left Nipple

Korgonthurus rips, though I miss their old logo that literally looks like a gnarled tree branch.

  • what a fantastic week for band names!

  • Dead Cowboy’s Sluts. Lmfao im dying

  • Giant of the mountain is sweet, I hadn’t laid my ears on it before today.

  • Stanley

There’s quite a lot of stuff to listen to this week. I dunno if I’ll buy any of it, but it’s taking me a while to get through the list and I’m only at Deathstorm (which is quite good by the way).

  • Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow

This one came out a week or so ago, and it’s definitely on my shoplist. (BTW, this is your new Supreme Leader). Some of the folks from Epica, Symphony X, Pagan’s Mind, Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody, and several other groups. Fuuuuuuuuck it’s insanely good!

  • EsusMoose

I’ll probably forget what’s coming out this week, so it’ll be the lurk in comments and on the FB group method of remembering what is worth hearing come friday

  • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Here’s a Bandcamp link to an entire Korgonthurus song in full.

  • Waynecro

Giant of the Mountain is pretty cool. In Twilight’s Embrace and Behexen are killer, and I dig that Brymir song.

  • No Bedowyn on the list? 🙁
