This Toilet Tuesday (5/17/16)

It’s Toilet Tuesday again, and you know what that means. I’ve dug through the deepest, dankest corners of the internet with my bare hands to bring you the deepest, dankest metal I could find. W and I have grabbed a couple nuggets of gold for your listening pleasure; now it’s your turn. Show us what you’ve got!

Hipoxia – Si Devs Esset Occidendvs Erit – Monvmentvm ab Khaos I – (American Line Productions) [Creepy-Ass Drone/Doom]

Your first sensation when you finally regain consciousness is the immense pain shooting through your back. Your second sensation is crippling fear realizing that you’re in pitch black with no light. Why did you ever let Grant talk you into exploring this cave? You were certain that stupid caving blog was all made up. Grant was just being childish; there couldn’t possibly be a secret passage with demonic hieroglyphs and a weird round stone. It would be a mistake to even entertain Grant’s silly idea of exploring, you were sure. Where was Grant, by the way? You try calling out, but your throat is parched, and the acrid, ancient dust chokes your words. You try to at least hoist yourself onto your hands, but the pain in your back reminds you again of that nasty fall you took. You try to grit through the pain, but as you push up, you realize you’ve somehow wound up inside another tight cave passage. How did you end up horizontal in this press, you wonder to yourself? Just then, you hear an inhuman, guttural breathing sound from somewhere up ahead of you, and you realize you’ve been clawed into the den of whatever shrieked out that inhuman scream earlier. A slow scraping sound echos through the press as the entity begins to claw its way toward you. Without sight, without touch, all you can feel is the crushing weight of unearthly dread weighing upon your heart like the hundreds of feet of solid granite imprisoning you in this tomb. As the scraping lurches closer, you try to draw one last breath and wait for the end. FFO: Grave Upheaval, Stomach Earth, Catacombs 5/16/16 (W.)

oak pantheon

Oak Pantheon – In Pieces (Independent) [Folky Black Metal]

Despite what that genre tag might imply, Oak Pantheon are far from your garden variety nature-worshiping black metal band. Sure, there’s going to be some of what you’d expect here, but there are a lot of facets to In Pieces that separate them from the pack. From big melancholy chords to atmospheric post-influenced passages to parts that would fit in with many modern prog bands, Oak Pantheon effortlessly traverse a broad spectrum of soundscapes. It’s an album that can’t really be described in a few words; a solid, dedicated listen is the only way to truly grasp it. And given how good it is, that shouldn’t be too hard. 5/16/16 (Spear)
