This Toilet Tuesday (5/10/16)

Welcome to this, the most Toilet of Tuesdays. It’s unfortunately a bit of a slow one, but we need those sometimes to catch up on all the other shit we throw at each other throughout the week. Nevertheless, W, the good Mr. Molenaar, Stockhausen, and I have teamed up to bring you some of this week’s choicest cuts. Jam these bad boys and peruse that list to see if I overlooked anything that deserves to be heard.

grand magus

Grand Magus – Sword Songs (Nuclear Blast Records) [Viking Metal]
Listen to “Varangian”

“I hate peasant life,” you whine to your father after shoveling your fourth full handcart of your noble’s horse dung for the day. “Our pay sucks, all we get to eat is runny stew made from pigeon meat, and all my cousins have died of the Plague. I imagine that I’d be upset that I smelled like dung all day if everything else didn’t already smell like dung.” Your father shrugs, gets kicked by the noble’s horse, and dies. You go back to your hut after throwing his body in the creek from which you draw your drinking water and contemplate your life. That night, as you lay in bed thinking about that hot piece of noble lady you’ll never be clean or rich enough to attract, a vision comes to you in a dream. Like a bolt of lightning, a mighty riff cracks down to you from heaven, setting your pathetic dung hut ablaze, but within the ashes, you are reborn. Your muscles swell, your stench transforms into musk, and a glorious mane of manly chest fur bursts forth from your pecs. From the crater of the smoking riff, you pluck an axe and ride forth to slay your odious liege lord. You are the grand magus, and your righteous campaign of whoring and pillaging begins now. FFO: Beer wenches, riffs, not smelling like dung. 5/13/16 (W.)

Warfect – Scavengers (Cyclone Empire) [Thrash]
Listen to “Purveyors of Cadavers”

There’s not really a whole lot to say about Scavengers, because it’s all stuff we’ve heard before. This is very much meat-and-potatoes thrash, but it’s not bad. It’s like Evile; familiar, but better than average. If all you’re looking for is some super-fast thrash with ripping solos and solid riffs, then look no further. 5/13/16 (Spear)

immeasurable suffering

Seiches/Pneuma Hagion – Immeasurable Suffering [Split] (Independent) [Industrial Black Metal/Death-doom]

Ignore the Bandcamp release date; this split by one-man Chicago black metal/noise project Seiches and one-man Texas death/doom project Pneuma Hagion was only uploaded in full yesterday. Each contributes a side showcasing their own idiosyncratic approaches to extreme metal (or something around there) united only by their shared affinity for musical darkness. Pneuma Hagion’s side, featuring two re-recorded tracks from last year’s Trinity demos alongside one new song, is the more straightforward, though hardly the worse for it. Seiches, meanwhile, combines otherworldly black metal with industrial synthscapes and ends up sounding like a darker, less psychedelic Cloak of Altering. Keep an eye out for a physical release later this year. 5/8/16 (Christian)

Modorra/Bodybag – Modorra/Bodybag (split- Plague Island) [Grindcore]
Listen to “My Name is Luka (Magnotta),” “G.A.S.” (Modorra), “Post-mortem Partner” (Bodybag)

Plague Island Records has whipped out a solid split that gives us all a much needed gut grinding. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of an album opening with a movie sample before blasting off at warp speed. Modorra does just that, using a trashy wall of cymbals to great effect. There may not be much riffing for you to hang on to, but the sheer fury and energy of Modorra’s death-driven-grind tunes are enough to hook me. Plus, I’m fairly certain they use a chainsaw instead of a bass, and that’s fine by me. Bodybag dials back the fury slightly, leaning heavily on OSDM influences with big, mean chords and low, nasty growls. The urge to beat my chest while listening to these guys is nearly irresistible. Jam some tracks below, yo. 5/11/16 (Suckhausen)

Avatar – Feathers & Flesh (Independent) [quite something ahead]
Listen to “Regret,” “House of Eternal Hunt,” “For The Swarm”

Black Absinthe – Early Signs of Denial (Independent) [Southern Metal]
The opening riff is the Chrono Trigger battle theme

Blakk Old Blood – Greed (Clavis Secratorvm) [Blakk Old Metal]
Listen to “Blakk Old Blood”

Blakk Old Blood/Black Devotion – Blakk Old Blood vs Black Devotion (split- Clavis Secretorvm) [Blakk Old Metal/Black Metal]

Bright Curse – Before the Shore (HeviSike Records) [Doom]
Listen to “The Shore”

Carnifloor – Process of Disorderly Conduct (Rotten Music) [Brutal Death Metal]
Listen to “Obscene Intentions”

Destruction – Under Attack (Nuclear Blast Records) [Thrash]
Listen to “Under Attack,” “Second to None”

DevilDriver – Trust No One (Napalm Records) [Groove Metal]
Listen to “Daybreak”

Ethereal Riffian – I AM. Deathless (Robustfellow) [Psychedelic Doom]
Listen to “Drum of the Deathless”

Fallen Apollo – Dethroned (Independent) [Core-y Death Metal]
Listen to “Acid Bath Burial”

Formless – Eon (Independent) [Tech Death]
Listen to “Tech Death,” “Prism”

Gallows Pole – Doors of Perception (Pure Steel Records) [lolbuttz]
Listen to “Burn It Down”

Gorguts – Pleiades’ Dust (Season of Mist) [Weird Death]

Helhorse – Helhorse (Spinefarm Records) [Doom]
Listen to “Hell of a Ride”

Hypersonic – Existentia (Revalve Records) [Power Metal]

Locus Animae – Prima che Sorga il Sole (Independent) [NO ANIMAE]
Listen to “Orizzonte”

Mercury Falling – Introspection (Independent) [Power Metal]
Listen to “Of Sinners & Saints”

Narcotic Self – Cut the Chord (Independent) [Thrash]
Listen to “Generation Victim”

Nympholepsy – Nympholepsy (Independent) [Brutal Snare Metal]
Listen to “Nympholepsy”

Phobocosm – Bringer of Drought (Dark Descent Records) [Death Metal]
Listen to “Ordeal”

Planet of Zeus – Loyal to the Pack (Independent) [Southern Metal]
Listen to “Loyal to the Pack”

Primitai – Night Brings Insanity (Independent) [Thrash/Heavy Metal]
Listen to “Black Rider”

Rebaelliun – The Hell’s Decrees (Hammerheart Records) [Death Metal]
Listen to “Legion”

Saratoga – Morir en el bien, vivir en el mal (Maldito Records) [Power Metal]
Listen to “Como El Viento”

Silent Moriah – Wise Murders and Natural Evil [Death/Doom]
Listen to “Natural Evil”

Soilid – Into the Ruins (MDD Records) [Groove Metal]
Listen to “Eternal War”

Spell – For None and All (Bad Omen Records) [Heavy Metal]
Listen to “River of Sleep”

Subliminal Fear – Escape from Leviathan (Inverse Records) [Melodeath]

Transilvania/Kafirun – Transilvania/Kafirun (split- Destruktion Records) [Black Metal]

Veil of Mist – Disenchantment (Valkyrie Rising) [Gothic Metal]
Listen to “Ghosts of Winter”

Vulto Abissal/Përgamo/Bloody Lair – …nas Raízes do Metal Negro (Diabrura Distro) [Black Metal]

Did we forget a new release? Is there a way we could improve this list? Let us know in the comments below!

This will make for a good studying playlist.

    • tigeraid

      Studying the history of SWORDS!?

      • Eliza

        Unfortunately not, just English.

      • HAIL!

  • Joaquin Stick

That Grand Magus writeup is spectacular.

    • Eliza

The song isn’t bad at all either.

    • PostBlackenedWhaleGaze

      “What is best in life?”

“To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.”

  • *shrugs

    • tigeraid

Surely, a shrug of TRIUMPH for Sword Songs.

  • megachiles

Is DevilDriver groove metal, or Brutal Pall Mall-core? Pls advise.

  • I just want to share my appreciation for J.M. Dopico here. This guy is one prolific musician/artist. I seem to stumble onto a new project of his at least 2 or 3 times a year and I’m always blown away by it. I was able to snag his Bodybag EP from last year on wax and played it many many times! This Modorra/Bodybag split has been one of my most anticipated releases for this year! I’m really looking forward to picking this one up soon. Bodybag pretty much take right off from where Machetazo left off which is perfect since I fucking worship that band. I had the privilege of seeing Dopi perform with Machetazo twice and both times I was completely blown away. I even shook his hand and talked to him for a brief moment just to share my appreciation for him. RIP Machetazo and hopefully new Ruinebell shit will happen soon as well! Got love that Amebix worship.

It wasn’t only a month ago I stumbled onto his perverse and raw blacked D-Beat project Dishammer and now I found another project of his called Mutilated Veterans. Like his ex-death-grind band Machetazo, Dopi plays drums and takes care of the vocal position. Its been no real news that of lately I’ve been in a big D-beat/Punk mood. This project hits that spot hard much like Dishammer but with more filth and death metal influences.

  • Dave Vincent’s Perm

Grand Magus shall be the soundtrack to me failing at life.

  • 365ChaosRiddenDays

Gorguts, Grave Miasma and and Phobocosm are the top to me in these days and there’s a new song by Behexen called “Umbra Luciferi” and I have some other news:

FRONT: Their album “Iron Overkill” will be released on June 24 via Iron Bonehead. (BM)

ARTIFACT OF SKULLS: “III Luciferian Blasphemy” (Death/Raw Black Metal)

    ENUCLEATOR: “Demo 2016” (Death/Black Metal)

You can find these releases on Bandcamp.

    • Dubs

That Phobocosm album is pretty good.

      • 365ChaosRiddenDays

Yes, not bad, I’m curious about their next release.

      • I think they are playing MDF this year. Maybe Randell or Sweettooth0 will check em out for ya.

    • ENUCLEATOR >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

      • 365ChaosRiddenDays

        Killer from start to end.

        • Totally agree! Just absolutely pulverizing stuff.

          • 365ChaosRiddenDays

That’s why we have to keep an eye to Bandcamp and I’m listening Mutilated Veterans right now, new to me and I like it, thank you.

          • There is a Predator quote in that Mutilated Veterans EP too. Makes it all the better, Haha!

          • 365ChaosRiddenDays

I like that movie and the GIF while Alien is taking a shower and Predator Flush the Toilet, ha ha!

  • RustyShackleford

I literally just came to the blog expecting Tech Death Thursday. Finals week is a hell of a drug. Yep.

  • I have a lot of friends who really like Avatar, and I’ve never understood why anyone would like them. Merp

    • Maik Beninton™

I listened to a song of theirs one time and liked, those new songs though, I don’t even know what to make of them.

    • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

I’ve never been able to get into their music either, or the fact that the singer looks like a gimpoid version of Jaz Coleman (Killing Joke).

  • Interested in Grand Magus, Gorguts and Saratoga. I thought Saratoga disbanded, I have a lot of memories listening Agotarás, it was a fun, thrashy power metal from Spain, their singer at that time was pretty good.

    • Maik Beninton™

That Saratoga song has some good riffs, at one point it sounded like an anime opening song.

      • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

Indeed, it is a grand marriage, anime and power metal!

    • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

One of the classic power metal bands! I think the guitarist is in Alquimia now, along with the singer from Avalanch.

  • That Locus Animae is fine. They call themselves avant garde, but the track is really straightforward (symphonic) melodic death with a woman singing over it. It’s not actually bad, but i doubt anyone here would like it

    • For once I think you are on to something, bb.

    • Waynecro

      I can dig it.

    • Spear

I enjoyed the minute or so I listened to. I just couldn’t resist the tag.

  • I am not that up on Grand Mangus, but it sounds awfully meh. Vocals specifically.

  • Those Modorra/Bodybag tracks are hot rockin’.

    • CyberneticOrganism

      Algerian font ist krieg

      • I am not sure anyone could argue that.

    • Maik Beninton™

It would be 10 if it worked for me.

    • CyberneticOrganism

Ooooh, I like this. Very Pelican-esque.

      • they do a very neat job of “post rock”. concise, memorable.

    • GL, have you heard of God Is an Astronaut? check out their song “The End Is the Beginning”. it’s similar.

      • brokensnow

They had a couple of good tunes. What was their big hit back in the day?

      • I have heard them. They just never clicked with me. The tunes were good, but did not tickle me the right way. But, I am not a big post rock fan either. But yeah, they are solid!

  • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Both of those Grand Magus songs are a bit eh. But I can live with it, I guess – that Viking Metal tag though, that I don’t know ’bout.

Still vaguely interested in Destruction thanks to aeons past, and therefore happy to hear both of their new songs are better than anything on their last album.

    • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Warfect was alright I guess, nouthing out of the ordinary, basic thrash. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
Modorra on the other hand is banging, but Bodybag I didn’t feel so much.

  • Eliza

Has everyone listened to the new Gorguts album? Everyone should listen to the new Gorguts album!

    • who?

      • Eliza

        • i’m adding it to the queue…
is your opinion something like “it’s a good”?

          • Eliza

            It’s a very good.

          • Waynecro

            It is indeed the jam.

          • Eliza

            It’s jammin! … Sorry.

          • Waynecro

            Dude, it totally is.

          • Eliza

And I will listen to it again.

    • Elegant Gazing Globe

I still have not listened to the new Vektor, and I don’t really feel like I’m missing out for some reason

      • Eliza

I haven’t yet listened to that too, but I plan on doing so in the future. I liked all the songs I heard from it.

      • Dubs

        It is SO good.

        • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

The tracks I’ve heard so far are pretty good Thankfully you were right about it not sounding like Voivod (which is what JJD was saying).

    • Dubs

      It’s a good.

      • Eliza

        Yes, it is.

  • Elegant Gazing Globe

Phobocosm only thing to grab my attention this week.

  • brokensnow

Black crown initiates single is out for anyone who cares.

    • Eliza

I didn’t care a few minutes ago, but now I definitely do.

  • The Tetrachord of Archytas

Hopefully the guy from Spirit had nothing to do with chrono trigger. Otherwise black absinthe is gonna have a lawsuit on their hands in several years from now

    • Chrono Trigger music is awesome <3

      • The Tetrachord of Archytas

There’s probably very few days where I don’t listen to something from chrono trigger

  • Count_Breznak

The new Gorbutts doesn’t do much for me….

  • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

I figured Grand Magus would be the opening music to Chrono Trigger, well, because they were already in the game:

  • Waynecro

That Grand Magus blurb was pure genius, W. The Modorra/Bodybag split is pretty rockin’, and the new Formless ain’t too bad either.

  • tertius_decimus

Gorguts didn’t disappoint. Dissonant music somehow brings calmness when you listen to it. Love that feeling.
