This Toilet Tuesday (4/12/16)

Hello and welcome to another round of This Toilet Tuesday! We’ve got a lot of solid new releases this week with a broad range of styles and sounds spanning the spectrum of metal in its vast variety. W and I have picked out a couple choice cuts for you here, but there’s plenty more to be had below. Let’s get to it!

back to r'lyeh

Back to R’Lyeh – The McMurdo Expedition 1909 (Independent) [Avant-garde Metal]

Another week, another offbeat release for Dr. Allovertheplace to cover and you to ignore. In this week’s case, though, you really should give The McMurdo Expedition a chance, because it’s totally rad. When we think Lovecraftian metal, we usually imagine spiraling dissonance and abyss-belching vocals, but Back to R’lyeh take a decidedly different tack by playing rocking riffs accented with uplifting bell and chime ornamentations that offset the gloomy growls when they do appear. The winsome, layered vocals in the opening track make me want to grab my cane and take a jaunty stroll into the spaces between angles, but closer “The Kadishtu Brotherhood” is the real highlight with its rocking riffs and delicious bass noodling. Tasty, not a word I’ve ever used in relation to Lovecraft before. FFO: Howls of Ebb, Tribulation, Fantomas 4/11/16 (W.)

howls of ebb again

Howls of Ebb – Cursus Impasse: The Pendlomic Vows (Caligari/I, Voidhanger/Nuclear War Now!) [Weird Death]

Howls of Ebb continue the tradition of peddling some of the most mystifying, confounding metal around, but this time, they’ve brought more riffs. And solos. These solos rule and sound like interdimensional beasts bangin’. Don’t believe me? Skip to 0:58 in “The 6th Octopul’th Grin.” If you don’t mind expanding your consciousness and getting a little sticky, you’re going to love having your reality destroyed by Cursus Impasse. Just don’t forget a towel. FFO: AEvangelist, Grey Heaven Fall, Shining (Nor) 4/15/16 (W.)

woman is the earth

Woman Is The Earth – Torch of Our Final Night (Init Records) [Black Metal]

I had the pleasure of seeing Woman Is The Earth live last month at my local trees’n’shit festival (put on by none other than Austin Lunn of Panopticon), and I was struck by their intricate guitar work and song structure. It’s no secret that a lot of black metal bands tend to be singular in their musical and thematic focus, but WITE aren’t one of them. Torch of Our Final Night traverses a winding path through odd chords, groovy interludes, emotional tapped leads, and even a bit of doom. It’s different, but just familiar enough to sink its hooks in instantaneously. 4/15/16 (Spear)

Hemotoxin – Biological Enslavement (Unspeakable Axe Records) [Death/Thrash]
Listen to “Forgotten Faces,” “Transparent Eyes”

Unspeakable Axe continues their streak of killer releases with Hemotoxin, who bring you everything you could want in a thrashy death metal record. Biological Enslavement builds a solid foundation of monstrous riffs and drums, expanding skywards with soaring leads and intense dueling guitars. If you worship at the temple of the riff, don’t skip this. 4/15/16 (Spear)

Life is indeed a slow, stupid death.

    • Nina: which are your picks for This Toilet Tuesday?

    • Celtic Frosty

  • question of the day: does JAG dig the Mortal Kombat band?

  • tigeraid

That Back to R’Lyeh’s cover looks fucking awesome, but not sure it’s my type of jam. I’d buy a fucking poster of that cover tho.

    • Dubs

It was really not what I expected at all.

      • Eliza

        That’s why I love it.

      • tigeraid

It’s certainly trippy. Just can’t see it holding my interest.

    • as does the Howls of Ebb artwork!

  • Eliza

There are lots of unusual stuff this week and that makes me happy.

  • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

    So many things.
Hemotoxin is going to be killer. Nucleus IS killer. Barbarian is going to destroy me.

  • tigeraid

Also that Holy Dragons “music video” is worthy of much lolbuttz.

  • Maik Beninton™

Danger Zone is some glam mehtal, I honestly expected worse though.

    • EsusMoose

It is the lol of butz. I was expecting Christian rock from the label name

      • Maik Beninton™

I thought it would be some power metal when I saw their logo.

    • Eliza

Why can’t that genre just die already?

      • EsusMoose

Irony is a horrifyingly strong force and makes that corpse shamble as though its Leopard print pants aren’t completely worn away.

      • Maik Beninton™

        It is dead.
I can’t name any other recent glam band that isn’t Steel Panther.

        • Eliza

By dead I mean no one trying to revive it.

          • Maik Beninton™

Nothing will ever die while nostalgia still exist.

          • Eliza

That’s a sad truth. Good thing ignorance exists.

  • Good job, team!

  • Count_Breznak

Oh ? Did Crematory reuni……it’s the German one, nevermind.

    • Ha, yeah I did the same. Lame.

  • Spear

I was pleasantly surprised by the riffiness of the new Howls of Ebb. Kind of odd that they decided to do something a bit more normal this time, but good regardless.

    • Dubs

To me, the EP sounded like evil surf music. This new album is much more conventional by comparison.

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

“evil surf music” does sound interesting.

      • Spear

That’s a good descriptor. More conventional doesn’t equate to bad, though. I’m enjoying it.

        • Dubs

      • Janitor Jim Duggan

Evil surf music? You had my interest but now you have my attention. Dick Dale is God.

        • Dubs

          You probably won’t like this.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

I’m still going to listen to it.

          • Eliza

            Good choice!

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

It was interesting. Sadly I can’t listen to the whole thing because I have to go to work soon.

          • Eliza

Remember to finish, it’s worth it.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

            I will.

  • Damn, I got really excited for a second when I saw “Crematory”. Then I realized it’s not the awesome Swedish death metal band “Crematory”. Damn indeed.

  • Eliza

I got super excited to listen to Imperial Triumphant’s EP, but then I saw where it’s streaming. Ehh, I guess I have to make a compromise this time.

    • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

      No, you don’t.

      • Eliza

        You know what, you’re right.

        *closes tab*

    • Spear

      MS gets the goods sometimes.

      • Eliza

The exclusive streams are literally the best thing about that site. Even so, that doesn’t make them good, just slightly tolerable.

    • while it’s not my favorite site in the metal blogosphere, they’ve linked to the Toilet a few times. i like to hope everyone’s in Okay terms with each other.

  • Oh fuck… Necrot is rad.

    • Dubs

Tankcrimes are a pretty quality label.

      • Looking through the releases now. Looks like a lot of oldschool styled stuff (Especially on the punk/thrash spectrum). Will have to dive into this for sure.

  • EsusMoose

I gotta write what I want to hear down because I realized I forget mostly everything that gets releases by Friday. Seems like a good 4-6 records I wanna hear.

  • Eliza

Heretik is better that I thought they’d be.

  • Enucleator’s 2016 demo cassette got released today. Endless support for this band. Raw, grindy, and filthy stuff here.

    • their name is pretty dope, too.

    • This distro also has the classic Bride of Insect album by Nuclear Death which was out of print for years. Essential release if you don’t own it.

          • This is completely random, but, Nekrogoblikon is coming to town on the 29th. I am not a fan, but I am srsly considering going. This song is the reason why:

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

            I didn’t hack your account did I?

          • JJD plz! I go to concerts too!

            How was Metal Church??

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

It was very good. The locals were actually good, Hatchet was also good but a letdown compared to Metal Church. Mike Howe was in top form and the band was so good. It’s one of the better shows I’ve seen in a while. Probably in the top 3 shows I’ve been to so far, the only problem was the sound guy was awful at mixing vocals. At least he did good with mixing the Metal Church vocals. I couldn’t even hear the singer for the first band because he mixes guitars so loud.

          • Excellent. Good shows are always good!

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

It is. I’m planning on seeing Lynch Mob there in June if possible.

BLACK FAST PLAY TOILETTO TOMORROW NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • Eliza

I want to see them so bad.

            It must’ve been painful.

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

            *Screaming for Bruce detensifies*

I doubt Maiden will ever come around here (if they did, I’d probably have to go to Richmond, which involves a trip on the slave ship called Greyhound), but thankfully got to see them back in 2008.

            ME SEEN TWICE!!!!! 2010 & 2012!!!!!!!

          • Eliza

Wow, I feel really sorry for you. 🙁

          • I think Black Fast was in Dayton on the 3rd? hmmmmm

          • The Tetrachord of Archytas

Playing in my area next week. Pretty sure ima make dat

          • Eliza

I predict this this will become a classic that will make future generations envious that they weren’t alive to witness it.

          • Waynecro

I just saw them, and they kicked ass. I suggest you go to the show. You might even get to hang out with John Goblikon.

    Busy ass week

    • cosigned. this week is overflowing with work

      • Dave Vincent’s Perm

I love it when the teacher asks for 3 maths papers and you’ve done one

  • The Tetrachord of Archytas

Had me at taking “a jaunty stroll in the space between angles”

  • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

I might check out the new Crematory. I like their stuff overall, despite the worst Sisters Of Mercy cover ever made and the fact they write their lyrics like a haiku a la Frontline Assembly, but they haven’t had a solid album overall since ‘Just Dreaming’. Good band, but they definitely have some cringeworthy stuff in there.

  • Waynecro

Dude, Woman Is the Earth is the jam. Also, I expected Noobsaibotcore to be a lot more skronky/spooky.

  • Thanks for the mention! Hopefully some of you guys dig the new album.

  • Adrian Hnz

As the guitarrist of BACK TO R’LYEH and avid reader of your web, im so stoked of being part of this. I hope you really liked it and we expect to keep on making music people are surprised with,

Best regards and take care of the KADISHTU BROTHERHOOD!

    • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

I’m not certain what I expected, regardless I sure didn’t expect what I got. But the last song was KILLER.

      • Adrian Hnz

We try to be as unexpected as possible, keeping in mind that we have to do SONGS that flow together. For us, your comment is a compliment.

    • Dubs

Thanks for stopping by and great work on that EP!

      • Adrian Hnz

Thanks to you, buddy. Hope you enjoy our full (but little) discography.
