This Toilet Tuesday (3/29/16)

Greetings, flushers, and welcome to Toilet Tuesday! This week marks the start of April, which looks to be nothing short of amazing for metal this year. A handful of those are coming already, and Jom Pootersan, W, and I have picked a select few you shouldn’t miss. Cast your ears on them first, and then your eyes on that list below.

setentia

Setentia – Darkness Transcend (Independent) [Progressive Death Metal]
Stream

I woke up this morning and thought to myself, “Man, I could really use some progressive death metal with tasty dissonance, soaring solos, and clever construction, but I’m fresh out of new Ulcerate.” Thankfully, I stumbled upon Darkness Transcend, the debut full length from Setentia, and it had everything my heart desired. More importantly than those individual elements though is the combined package of towering, excellent songs and a compelling listen from start to finish. The year of killer death metal debuts continues. FFO: Ageless Oblivion, Dystrophy, Auroch 3/27/16 (W.)

graves at sea

Graves at Sea – The Curse That Is (Relapse Records) [Sludge/Doom]
Listen

Boy do I love me some nautical themed doom, and if your taste is anywhere near as awesome/nerdy you’ll fancy this as well. After forming nearly fifteen years ago, only releasing splits, an EP and demos, Portland based band Graves at Sea are unleashing their full length debut, The Curse That Is. The first three tracks (streaming on Bandcamp) feature some of the catchier melodic, mid-paced sludge/doom you’ll find this year. When it’s all said and done, this beast of an album totals up to 75 + minutes, so strap on your seat belts for big riffs and fun. 4/1/16 (Jom Pootersan)

abstractor-dark circles

Dark Circles/Abstracter – Dark Circles/Abstracter (split- Halo of Flies) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Void” (Dark Circles)
Stream (Abstracter)

Though both the bands on this split are black metal, they’re sonically very different. Dark Circles go fast, hard, and pissed on “Void.” Despite its blazing speed, there’s an underlying sense of disillusionment and weariness to it; it both pumps you up and pulls you down. Abstracter, on the other hand, have a pair of monstrous, cavernous songs not unlike Akhlys or Misþyrming, but substantially heavier. The second song in particular oozes an oppressive air, feeling claustrophobic despite the immense atmosphere it presents. Regardless of which style you lean towards, you should check out both; these two disparate sounds work surprisingly well together. 4/1/16 (Spear)

Algoma/Chronobot – Algoma/Chronobot (split- Dead Beat Media) [Sludge/Stoner Doom]
Listen to “Phthisis” (Algoma), “Red Nails” (Chronobot)

  • COAL ROLL

    Good Morning

  • I’m still catching up from the last few weeks. Reviewing the few albums that have caught my eye and seeing what’s going to last. New Horrified is great, need to give it a few more spins though to really dig into it

    • Super Nintendo Chalmers

Fuck that. Just listen to Sadus.

    • Hubert

      I should check that Horrified.

  • Because no one asked for it, here’s another Barglar album.

  • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Nautical themed doom, you say? I guess that means Graves At Sea will be on my menu this week.

    • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

      Very heavy, very good.

    • Ol Dirty Blastbeard

seeing them in a couple weeks with Order of the Owl. hopefully they have some LPs left

      • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

        That ought to be heavy.

        • Ol Dirty Blastbeard

Bongzilla sans Dixie Dave was a bit disappointing on Sunday. Black Cobra p much stole the show. Lo Pan was kinda bad. Kings Destroy was even more cringeworthy than last time

  • RJA

Setentia sounds like it could be good W. – added to the list.
Thank you Richter for the Ifrinn bandcamp gift – haven’t listened yet but excited to do so – you are the man.
Also semi-interested in the Tombs release – I’m sure it’s been talked about on here somewhere before but anybody heard that yet – how is it?

    • Edward/Breegrodamus™

I saw yesterday that Tombs was streaming in full at IO, didn’t get a chance to listen to it but looking forward to getting into it.

      • RJA

Thanks for the heads up – I’m listening right now. Honest opinion – Not loving it too much. it’s ok.

        • Edward/Breegrodamus™

It’s weird: I really dug Path of Totality (still enjoy it) but never spent any considerable time with Savage Gold, and for some reason was still stoked to hear this new one. I liked one advance track I heard a couple of weeks ago. I’ll jam later, I’m off to peep Batman v Superman in a matter of moments.

          • Ol Dirty Blastbeard

Savage Gold is their best album, np, ed

          • Edward/Breegrodamus™

            Need to revisit soon!

    • Dubs

And thank you for the AEvangelist.

    • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Haven’t listened to it in its entirety, but I really dug those songs that were released from the Tombs EP.

    • Did i thank you for yelloweyes? IF NOT FOAD JK HAHAHAHA

  • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

I feel like I need to own the Battlesword album, for the simple fact the band’s name is Battlesword.

That Graves at Sea is HEAVY.

Lots of promising looking albums this week. I’ll have to check some out.

Also, I totally ordered that Rapid Terror cassette. SPEED METAL BASTARD!!!

  • Super Nintendo Chalmers

Yo, what should we put on our album cover?

I don’t know. How about a skull vagina? No, wait. A vagina skull?

    Fuck yes.

    • Dubs

it worked for comics in the 90s. Lady Death comes to mind.

      • Super Nintendo Chalmers

No correlation that comics began to suck in the 90s.

Although, I remember the awesome dental comics that DC put out that I used to read while waiting for the dentist as a kid circa 93 or 94.

        • Dubs

What do you mean? Image’s 90s back-catalogue is the crowning achievement of the medium.

          • Super Nintendo Chalmers

            Like hell it is.

          • Dubs

            Rob Liefeld=golden standard.

          • Super Nintendo Chalmers

On a serious note, that has a lot more to do with how Liefeld and co changed creative ownership, rather than the quality of their work. Saying he’s the golden standard is pretty subjective and up for debate.

          • Dubs

Oh undoubtedly. While it’s quite fun to take pot-shots on 90s comics, that’s as much of an editorial issue as anything else.

          • Super Nintendo Chalmers

Also, everyone knows Vertigo had the best art back in the 90s.

            Glenn Fabry fanboy 4 Lyfe.

          • Dubs

I’m a big fan of Mike Mignola’s work on Hellboy.

          • Hubert

I love his art. Big part of why I enjoy Hellboy.

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

Mignola and Kirby are my favorite artists. I had the pleasure of meeting Mignola at a show. Super nice dude.

          • Dubs

It’s kind of sad how far Kirby’s star has fallen nowadays, but I can understand the resentment if he did genuinely steal from other artists and take credit for what he didn’t do.

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

            Do what now?

          • Dubs

D’oh. I had a brainfart and was thinking of Stan Lee. My bad. Kirby is indeed awesome.

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

Thank you for correcting that! I didn’t want to , but was well ready to throw down in Jack Kirby’s defense. The man was a genius.

          • Dubs

You’d be right to do so, since he’s one of the dudes Lee ripped off.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

Jack Kirby had a very little known comic called Satan’s Six on a short lived comic imprint by Topps. They had their own universe of his. It’s a good comic.

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

            I’ve got it.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

I could never find them. I do love the Ultimate Warrior comic series though it lasted 5 issues.

          • Rob M

Absolutely could not stand Mignola’s art when I first saw it, then he created Hellboy and everything became awesome

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

            What did you not like?

          • Rob M

His style is incredibly stylized. I always found his Batman work to be blocky and weirdly proportioned. It works for Hellboy though

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

Ah, and that’s what I like about it. Haha!

          • Rob M

He’s very good in his niche…its a great style for horror, especially with all the heavy black he uses with his inks. Its not a good fit for superheros though, at least to me…

Though I tend to prefer more traditional styles like Ordway or Romita Sr…I like clean lines

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

You cannot go wrong with either of those gentlemen.

          • RJA

Probably the best writing also – I’ve got some of the first few years of Vertigo stuff buried in a box somewhere I should dig out.

          • Super Nintendo Chalmers

That is worth some coin now. I have a pretty decently sized Vertigo collection and it kind of nauseates me how much it all cost.

          • Are any comics still worth anything? I sold off my boxes of junk years ago and didn’t get much for it. My local used books stores are overloaded with pretty much anything you could want.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

It depends. If they’re 90s comics in most cases it’s a no. When are they from? I know this because I own a crap ton of 90s comics which I bought for basically nothing.

          • Vertigo is mostly what I had in mind. I know Youngblood or Bloodshot or whatever the hell is completely worthless.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

Vertigo could be worth something. I never read them though.

          • RJA

guaranteed blood was in the title somewhere!

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

Yep you have the books that fill 25 cent boxes at conventions.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

I can’t give away my old 90s comics.

          • Super Nintendo Chalmers

Vertigo stuff is. A lot of the underground, or side, imprint stuff is worth money still or can be.

          • It’s like kids today don’t even want 200 back issues of Wizard anymore.

          • Super Nintendo Chalmers

We can combine our collections of Wizard and try and get enough money for a six pack.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

The first issue of Wizard is worth a little on Ebay.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

I bought three early issues of Wizard for a dollar. They’re somewhere under my bed with my copy of XMEN 1 from 1991.

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

I haven’t read one since high school. It’s still around? I figured it went the way of the baseball trading card magazines back in the day.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

            No its not.

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

More than certain there’s a sorta thing like that for albums, though, to see how much they’re worth.

          • Rob M

It really depends on what year youre talking about. Most of the stuff from the 90’s isnt worth the paper its printed on because the runs for each issue were ridiculous, like in the six digit range. Stuffs too easy to find now for it to have any value

EDIT …and someone already beat me to that explanation

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

There’s a comic shop up the street from me (Atomic Comics) and another AC in Hampton, so I guess it’s still a thing. My dad is huge on comic books to this day, so I’m guessing there’s a big market for them. I guess you could Ebay or Amazon them, as long as they’re in good condition.

PS, was wondering about the email regarding the Persona interview. 🙂

          • Pagliacci is Kvlt

Check out what New Mutants #98 is going for right now. I should really sell mine.

          • RJA

I don’t have a ton – but yea probably some gems in there. Unfortunately I spent all my money back then on Image titles!

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

Dark Horse all the way. Mignola is the man.

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

Calvin & Hobbes started tapering off by 1992.

Don’t even get me started on For Better or Worse.

            Or Ziggy.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus™

            I still fucks with Dilbert.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

I agree. Spawn and WildCats were good. Same with Deathblow.

          • Dubs

I may or may not have been trolling.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

I didn’t know. Preacher is good though. Sadly Rob Liefeld is not good at drawing.

          • Super Nintendo Chalmers

            Preacher wasn’t on Image.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

I can’t remember all the labels and their comics. I used to love Valiant though. XO Manowar was good as was Solar and Turok. Yes Turok was a comic.

          • RJA

thanks for that reminder on Valiant! I have a bunch of harbinger and xo manowar tucked away too.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

I have a first issue or two of Secret Weapons and the Deathmate prequel somewhere.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

The greatest comic series is this one…

          • Super Nintendo Chalmers

            Yesssssss.

          • Super Nintendo Chalmers

You can what you want about Liefeld, but he is a sublime artist.

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

Sadly, I saw the Spawn movie in theaters (my dad took me and I was young). Horrible movie, but the soundtrack kicked ass.

Iced Earth using the whole Spawn/Tod McFarlane artwork put me off on them back in the day, and the first song I heard of them was the one they did about a love story based on a comic book (I Died For You, IIRC). Took me a long time to actually get around to them because of that. #ToiletConfessions

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

            ….

          • tigeraid

            Fucking Liefeld.

        • nbm02ss

Don’t know that all of them sucked; Hellblazer started in the 90s, but I’m also biased as fuck because that’s my favorite comic run ever.

    • Hubert

When I first saw it I thought it was a dude. Still not entirely sure. The legs look more like man-legs.

      • CyberneticOrganism

Gotta protect your gentleman’s region with that candle right there

    • COAL ROLL

      Sweet Emotion

      • Super Nintendo Chalmers

        Coal Roll 4 Prez!

  • Good morning everyone! I’m back from my holiday week.

Anyways, I can’t listen a shit of this because Youtube isn’t working here today. But, I am interested in Moonsorrow, Novembre, Tengger Calvary, Doomsword, Thunderstorm and Martyrium.

    Good job, guys.

    • Dubs

Tengger Cavalry have been very active.

      • More active than my luck with internet connection, I can’t open social network at work either 🙁

        • Dubs

At least you have electricity right now

        • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

Hoping things are going well there.

          • Thanks, man! I think we will not have the major blackout I was predicting after all. That means I can be right here to write and comment 🙂

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

You should work on a passport and get over here!

      • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

I need to check with them about the interview questions, thanks for reminding me.

    • Scrimm

Check out Interment too. Think you’ll dig

      • Maik Beninton™

Aham. Pure Entombed worship. Can’t go wrong with that.

        • Scrimm

Plus they were around in the heydey when the whole SDM thing was at it’s height rather than some copycat band.

      • Thanks, man!

    • Maik Beninton™

I checked those. Novembre and Thunderstone are good, Moonsorrow was eh not feeling it, Tengger Calvary doesn’t have a link and there isn’t Doomsword here. Martyrium has a terrible production.

        Which song?
From what I can tell from their last couple of CD’s, they’re going towards shorter songs. Probably for their live sets. When I saw them, they had to cut quite a few songs short.

          Suden Tunti.

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

            Awesome song, terrible video.

        • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

There are 16 minutes son(s) on Jumalten Aika, although Suden Tunti is their shortrst in 10+ (only 7 minutes).
Saw them last year, played the entire Tulimyrsky (that almost 30 minutes) and a bunch of other long ones.

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

Were they headlining? When I saw them, Fintroll was headlining, so Moonsorrow obviously didn’t have as long of a set.

          • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

            Not headlining. A festival set.

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

Exactly. I’d love to see them do a show with no other acts and play all of V : Havitetty!

          • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

I’d live that too. Unfortunately I think they’ve only ever played Tuleen Ajettu Maa, amd even that onlu a bare handful of times, back when it was released.
