This Toilet Tuesday (3/17/15)

Welcome, my fellow flushers, to This Toilet Tuesday! Spring is nearly here: the sun is shining, the days are becoming longer, and the temperature is bearable once again. This all makes it very hard to not be a little bit of a lifelover and thus I have relocated to a sewer, where I can continue writhing in the murk. This week also has a pretty solid showing beyond what W, Leif, and I have covered here, so don’t be afraid to dive into that list down there. Have at it!

C-4 – Death in the Moshpit (Independent) [Grindcore]
Listen to “Puppet Corpse”

There must be something in the water in the Polish grind scene, because every band that’s crawled out of that sewer is nasty, nasty, nasty. Blending an unapologetically punky assault with deep guttural growls reminiscent of the mating calls of a male silverback gorilla, C-4 brings the pain. There isn’t much more to say about it except, “GRIND!”. FFO: Straight Hate, Speedy Gonzalez, Phosphorathic (W.)

Simbiose – Trapped (Anticorpos Records) [Crust]

I’m on a grind roll today. However, if you like your grind with a much more high energy and DIY vibe to it, might I suggest Simbiose? Trapped features a much, much crustier take on the style than that played by C-4. Oddly enough, though, there’s a ton of unexpected melody on this record. Even if you don’t understand the Portuguese lyrics, you’re still going to be moshing. Grind it out. FFO: Cretin, Yattai, Trap Them (W.)

Funerus – The Black Death (Dark Descent) [Death Metal]
Listen to “The Black Death”

Funerus has been around for what seems like an eternity and have relatively little back catalog to show for it. However, I am a believer of quality over quantity and their latest EP, The Black Death, is certainly a quality release. It knows just how long to pummel you before giving you a breather via some sweetly sludgy riffage. If you prefer your death with a little doom then this EP will be right up your alley. Plus, who doesn’t want that album art showing up in their music collection? (Leif Bearikson)

Serenity In Murder – The Highest of Dystopia (Spiritual Beast/Universal Music) [Melodeath]

I have a huge soft spot for big, dramatic, soaring melodic death metal bands, and Serenity In Murder deliver that in spades. The overall feel of the album is that of a more hyper Insomnium; blistering riffs and solos are accompanied by piano melodies and warm synths in a perfect complement. Despite the slightly silly name, The Highest of Dystopia is a solid melodeath album. (Spear)

  • Edward/Breegrodamus

I dig the art for The Black Death too, also, Stockhausencore.

    • Scrimm

Pretty much the same thing I was going to say.

      • Edward/Breegrodamus

Great minds and all that jive.

      • Edward/Breegrodamus

I’d like to be sad and listen to sad jams i.e. that new Pyramid album, but is there anything happening this week to be super excited about? Jack Bauer was talking up that Alkaloid…

        • Dr. Dubz

If you like the crust, check out Simbiose.

        • Scrimm

Nothing really jumping out at me from this week. I still want that Black Twilight Circle comp and the new Eternal Solstice from last week. Still waiting for Scar Sighted to show up in my local shop. Kinda overloaded on techy stuff for a while so I can’t really speak on that Alkaloid.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

There’s a new Black Twilight Circle comp?!

Scar Sighted is v v good, a tiny bit too long.

          • Scrimm

Not new, it’s that Tliltic Tlapoyauak one from a little while ago, but it just showed up in the store I frequent.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

I had no idea! I need to look into this situation.

            Odz Manouk >>>>>>

            Tukaaria >>>>>>

I’m less blown away by the rest of what I have heard out of there but they’re not subpar or anything.

          • Scrimm
          • Edward/Breegrodamus

I didn’t know there were that many members in the collective.

          • Scrimm

It’s all pretty new to me, I’m finally coming back around to black metal after a couple years of burnout. Now I need to go back to that monster of a thread you started in the FB group and binge on it. Also I only saw the cd copies of that comp in the store, I still haven’t made the jump to vinyl.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

Masterlord will attempt to tell you otherwise, but that is the trve black metal FB thread. The rest are for posers.

Many of my favorite picks from this year so far are in the black metal realm, Scar Sighted, Valis, that Death Karma album…

          • Scrimm

I really like what I’ve heard from Scar Sighted. Loving the new Hacavitz, and I liked what I heard from Death Karma, need to give it some more time.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

I need to spend more time with that Death Karma album, but was thoroughly impressed by a couple cursory listens. I have not even heard Hacavitz.

          • Scrimm

I only recently found out about the whole Black Twilight Circle thing from you guys.

          • Tyree

Ah, just got the physical copy of Raw to the Rapine not to long ago.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

I saw that! I don’t recall what you had it paired with though.

          • Tyree

It was the Lluvia & LVTHN split. And a beer of some sort.

        • Spear

If you like Obscura (the band, not the album), you’ll like Alkaloid.

        • RustyShackleford

It is pretty boner-ific in my opinion!

    • Hey man, I wondering (sorry if you said it before and I missed it) what you are studying when you go back to school???

      • Edward/Breegrodamus

Hey GL, no problem. I am hoping to get a Masters in Social Work. I applied to one school for this fall (very dumb in hindsight) and did not get accepted (I was shocked) so I have to wait to apply. I was having dinner with a guy lately who has a Masters in something related to being a LPCC (counseling) which is what I want to end up doing, so I need to do some research before this fall.

        • Sweet apples. Are you going to try to work underneath someone or go solo? Do you have a thesis or just course work? I am not familiar with how other fields do it asides from my own experience with my masters.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

Well, and remember I haven’t started, but in order to get a Masters in Social Work I would need to take and pass all the required classes (which I will likely do part time / in three years cause I will be working, too) and also complete two internships (working 16 -20 hours per week for awhile) in the field. Schools differ on their theses, my girlfriend who is getting her MSW has to do a ridiculous one but the school I applied to and was not accepted to I heard doesn’t have much in the way of a thesis.

What do you have a Masters degree in GL? I don’t think we ever covered that.

          • Gotcha. Yeah I guess it will depend on the school. Sounds fun either way!

Mine is in mechanical engineering. I actually just posted the link to my thesis below. You can check it out here!:

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

I’ll take a quick glance at that but to be honest I suspect it will be above me.

  • Based Tapir the Willy Shaker

    Uuuuh, dat Dødheimsgard!

  • Dr. Dubz

I was pretty blown away yesterday by Simbiose. Too bad you have to send the band an email to make a purchase.

    • Edward/Breegrodamus

That’s not the worst thing in the entire world.

  • Tyree

Bat is killer! Looking forward to listening that release. Still though, fuck you Hell’s Headbangers! Release that new Deathhammer already you dicks.

Simbiose is sick. Glad I got to stream that festerday.

I know some of you are not about that Dodheimsgard album, but I’m pretty anxious to listen to it all.

    • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

I’ve heard good things about the new DHG.

      • Tyree

I heard one song that was like 11 minutes or something. I was impressed with it. The production is compressed sounding, but it did not bother me much. Like I said, I’m curious to check the whole album out. The one song I heard is really chaotic sounding and weird as fuck. Also the drumming is really fucking intense.

        • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Can you post, as I actually have not heard a note?

          • Tyree
          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Yup, it’s weird. All I own is their second album, which is straight up black metal. Ain’t bad, though. The compression is killing the sound though.

          • Tyree

I don’t think it’s going to be anything I’ll listen to much in the future, but I think it will be an interesting ride listening to the full album. The compression is a bit of a let down though.

  • “more hyper Insomnium”. this. Insomnium is good but needs a little spring in its step.

    • Spear

Agreed. Also, it pleases new to no end that that vicious snarl is coming from a tiny Japanese woman.

      • Pfffffft, this Serenity in Murder is awesome, Spear.

The first songs are more finnish melodeath; but the 7 song is the exactly speedy guitar japanese work that they love!

        I will dig this.

        • The songs sound really good. I am going to have to get this tomorrow~!

  • Dr. Dubz

Hey dudes, anyone know what happened to KJM? I haven’t seen him around in a while.

    • I was gonna ask the same. Wanted to ask him some questions the other day.

    • great minds, i was thinking this exact thought last night.

    • Tyree

      Yeah, I miss that cup.

      • Eddie Trunk Jr., Floor Tech

        I miss him too.

    • I was thinking in tweet something to him, to be honest.

Our minds are connected in Brolomance <3.

      • Dr. Dubz

You have his twitter? Hit him up.

        • ¡Enviado!

        • Lacertilian

I just messaged him to say we miss his presence.

      • CyberneticOrganism

        #brolo, bro *high five*

    • Farty McPoopyCoalRoll

He’s suffering a bad case of the widdly diddlies?

    • I remember him commenting that he was going to be commenting less. Something about trying to stay on topic. That is what I remember.

      • @Based Tapir the Willy Shaker:disqus tried going on a similar quest a few weeks ago as well. circle-jerking is a TovH staple, folks!!!

        • Sir Tapir the Based

Hey! It’s Sir Based Tapir the Willy Shaker to you!

  • That C4 is some dirt upon dirt, Symbiose is good as well.

    • Dr. Dubz

I was surprised by how catchy Simbiose is.

  • The Man-Eating Tree, awesome proggy katatonia core, powered by Mr. Bear:

  • Maik Beninton

    That Stockhausencore tag.

    • Maik Beninton

Also is Shameless Self-Promotion replacing lolbuttz today? Seems to be the case.

      • Spear

        That’s my band, yo. It’s a choose-your-own-lolbuttz week.

And if I’m fated to carry the burden of lolbuttz, then so be it.

        • Heeeey! Finally you have the CD! I will check!

        • Maik Beninton

It has a strange production (vocals are low).

          • Weird. I can hear the mix good equalized o.o).

          • Maik Beninton

The sound is low so I got that impression.

          • Spear

No worries, haha. I sink a little deeper into self-loathing every time I listen to it, picking up on things we should have done differently/fixed.

          • It’s your first EP, right?

          • Spear

Yep! Having it out makes me want to start recording the next one already.

          • Hey, I like it, Spear!! Song two and three are very good. Who did the growls in the third song?

          • Spear

That was me. I did all the growls on the album with the exception of those in the admittedly-lolbuttzy fourth song (we didn’t know what we were doing when we recorded it and were too lazy to go redo it).

          • Your growls are awesome! <3

          • Spear

You are too kind, Link. <3 <3 <3

          • Nothing is as bad as my band’s first demo.

          • Yeah, your demo sucks. #gulp.

          • Spear

You should have heard our first demo. It might still be floating around the internet somewhere, but it’s seriously fucking bad.

        • Scrimm

Just noticed that. Will check out promptly.

        • the vocal line in “That Handsome Dreamer”… what does it remind me of?!?! it’s driving me nutz!

        • Do you see the pain you inflict on these poor souls?

          • Spear

I thought that was the idea?

        • Tyree

Dude, don’t worry. My band is the shittiest band ever.

I nominate the shittiest riff ever by the shittiest band in the entire world, who just this week released the shittiest album ever recorded. Chop-busting aside, Scab (brought to you by our very own Tyree) completely destroys, and the first riff in “Worm Feast” is the riff of the actual week. Represent.

          • Spear

I’ve been meaning to get your shit forever. I think I’ll go do that.

          • Eddie Trunk Jr., Floor Tech

My band Brian Kendrick Jackets is shittier. It’s all remixes covers.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

            Janitor Jim, how could you?

          • Eddie Trunk Jr., Floor Tech

It’s so bad. You should listen to it. Alsk, how could I what?

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

This smells like shit – SMELL IT

          • Eddie Trunk Jr., Floor Tech

I told you it was bad.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

Ha, I know. I was comparing your saying how bad the music was and still recommending I listen to it to when someone tells you something smells like shit and insists you smell it. It’s just kind of a funny thing is all.

          • Eddie Trunk Jr., Floor Tech

It’s more of a joke project than a real band. I don’t bring it up as I’ve been working on a remake of Pet Sounds that is so bad that I’ve alreasy disowned it.

          • Lacertilian

          • I had a band called Disciples of Blood where we did shitty power metal songs. Our crowning achievement was when the drummer of Gloryhammer sent us a message on Facebook calling us weird.

      • Edward/Breegrodamus

        The attempted delete, lol

        • At least on FFB they was some anonymity – not here!

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

The whole coming out as real people was a bit scary at first, lol

          • Dr. Dubz

I think I was travelling for work and got back to find everyone had outed themselves. It was weird.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

Of course we were way ahead of the curve there. Spotify metal besties.

          • I still have only revealed my first name to a few people… I will hold out!

          • Dr. Dubz

            I know it.

          • Do you have to submit your dissertation someplace when you are finished?

You might be able to find mine here:

Which may or not divulge my name… I would definitely be interested in readings yours when you are finished.

          • Dr. Dubz

Yah, we use an ETD system too. My committee didn’t actually tell me I needed to make any revisions, so I’m not sure if I’m finished or not.

          • Gotcha. My school was a freak about getting it submitted. It took almost two weeks to format it so that they would approve it for submittal. It was terribly tedious!

          • Dr. Dubz

The formatting thing is a huge pain. Thankfully, I had already gone through that with my Master’s Thesis, so it was a lot easier this time around.

          • Sweet. I did not know you did a Masters first. I know some times people skip that one.

          • Dr. Dubz

I didn’t actually intend to get a Doctorate at first, so I completed a Master’s as well. My master’s thesis is actually slightly longer than my dissertation.

          • Ah I see. I was the other way around. I had intentions of just a PhD but I got hired on working full time after after I finished my undergrad. So I just stuck with the masters course work. I may still one day go for the PhD. Since I work for a university they promote it pretty heavily. But- working full time- and going to school is not fun. Alot of my co workers (8 of 12) waited a few years before starting their PhD. Anywho. It sounds terrible at the moment.

          • Dr. Dubz

I sort of envision myself being one of those people who slowly works on different degrees throughout his life. Most big universities allow full-time employees to take one course free per semester.

          • I feel like later in life I will totally dig doing just what you mention! We are able to take 6 classes a year… Which was great because I could smash two courses during the summer.

          • Dr. Dubz

That’s not bad at all. My next step is to get my PE, but then once I’m working towards tenure, I might try to get an MBA.

I’m also crazy and have considered trying to get a Doctorate of Education at some point down the line.

          • Now, since you have worked under other professors does that time count towards the 5 years? Or did you not work under someone with their PE?

          • Dr. Dubz

My advisor is a PE, so I need to check my hours under him and the other professors. To be licensed by the TBPE, I only need two years of work as an EIT.

          • Gotcha! That is good news!

          • Lacertilian

            You’re a fucking animal Dubya!
            Go hard mate.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

            It did (divulge your name).

          • Stockhausen

            The shroud is lifted.

          • Zaphod.

          • Actually I think you are the only person that knows…

          • what you talkin about willis

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

Remember when we all migrated from The Blog That Shall Not Be Named and got connected on Facebook and revealed our true identities?

          • oh! on FB, yeah that was super cool!

          • Lacertilian

I’m such a tool that I just created another pseudo-identity for use on the group.
Triple identity. Although, the lizard & Fharc Hoff are kinda one & the same.

        • Maik Beninton

          I’m ashamed of myself.

          • Spear

Don’t be. If it’s a bad album, then it’s a bad album. We gain nothing without criticism.

  • RustyShackleford

I’m assuming there’s no write-up for Alkaloid because Bauer is keeping it in his pocket for tech death Thursday? Also this Serenity in Murder is not my usual jam but I’m really digging it this morning! Gotta wake up a little bit before I try the grindier items…yup!

  • Celtic Frosty

Still no goddamn, motherfucking Deathhammer. Goddamnit.

    • Celtic Frosty

Plus the Bat album isn’t officially released yet, either. Seeing a pattern with Hell’s Headbangers. A pattern of suckage.

      • Scrimm

They’re not the only ones dropping the ball. I am very displeased at the moment with a certain labels mail order service.

        • Edward/Breegrodamus

If you need a hard to find cassette, check out Iron Scourge. Dude sent me that Pissgrave demo cassette from Belgium and was quite prompt and courteous via email.

          • Scrimm

Had some great luck with Europe. The one I’m having an issue with now is one damn state away.

      • Tyree

Actually, most of all their new releases are that way. Lame!

        • Edward/Breegrodamus

          So lame, what the fuck.

    • Ferris Mueller

I feel that way every time there is no new Vektor.

  • Scrimm

That Weak Aside sounds decent if you ever wanted to hear Hail of Bullets with John Tardy on vocals.

    • Enemy Of The Free World

Not bad, not terribly interesting. Would need more listening but not much that makes me want to do so.

  • Holy wow 4 friends’ bands releasing music this week!

Automaton is the most gloriously cheesy steampunk inspired heavy/power metal you will ever here. Give it at least one chance, the first time you will cringe from the cheese, but once you get used to it, it’s really a great album. These guys hold nothing back, they are full on steampunk dweebs and I love them for it.

Dire Peril is straight ahead good power metal. If you like power metal, you will like Dire Peril. Simple as that.

Drakkar I saw at DeLand I think, but I was drunk somewhere. Everyone said they were great. I have no idea.

And of course, our Toileteers bands rule too (Dischordia and Incriminating SIlence.)

  • My picks this toilet tuesday:

    – Simbiose: catchy as hell and heaven.

    – The Man-Eating Tree: katatoniacore.

    – #StockhausenCore and #Spearcore Great Job, guys! Kudos! I deserve you the best from the bottom of my heart <3

    • I think you would enjoy Dire Peril and Automaton, if you haven’t checked them out already

    • Maik Beninton

Stocky launched an EP of covers. :/
It’s good but I’m more interested in the band’s original sound.
I like the name of it though.

  • Farty McPoopyCoalRoll

Nearly 20 years later, I’m finally getting around to listening to this. Definitely tickling my engorged love gristle!

  • Pagliacci is Kvlt O)))

Downfall of Nur is tasty. Just the right balance of atmosphere, black, and folk for me.
