This Toilet Tuesday (2/28/17)

Welcome to This Toilet Tuesday! New month, new music, and new Zelda makes for a happy Spear, one who is sure not to see the sun for many weeks to come. As to the music end of things, there wasn’t much that caught my eye this week, but that’s not to say there’s nothing to check out. W. and I have picked out a couple as usual, so be sure to give those a listen. Hit that list below and let us know what else needs to be heard!

Maat – Monuments Will Enslave (Aural Attack Production) [Death Metal]
Listen to “March for a Dying God”

If you, like me, haven’t really felt Nile’s recent releases, Germany’s Maat may be just the Ancient Egypt-shaped key to your hedonistic fulfillment. Although the band falls squarely within the tech death sphere, their flippant use of Phrygian scales and unexpected melodies certainly help them to stand out. Plus Thot’s full-throated yelling is perfect for meditating on the Coptic themes. If you too think Akhenaten was a heretic, give Maat a try. FFO: Nile, Crescent, Scarab 3/3/17 (W.)

The Senseless – The Buried Life (Independent) [Death Metal]
Listen to “Brutum Fulmen”

Did the new Mithras whet your appetite for majestic brutal death metal, but leave you hungry for more? Are you dying waiting for word of more Sarpanitum? Then you need to check out The Senseless. “Brutum Fulmen” is of a similar nature to the aforementioned bands (with sole member Sam Bean actually having been part of Mithras at one point), but of a somewhat different flavor. It’s hard to describe, but it sounds a little more earthbound than the others, for lack of a better word. In any case, they all fill the same need, so check it out if you were into On Strange Loops3/1/17 (Spear)

  • Lacertilian

That Scarab mention garnered a cursory click. Getting a strong Melechesh vibe on some of those higher register riffs too.
The Sewercide track sounds a lot dirtier this time around, it was my fave from their EP, tempted to buy that shit again now hahah.

      • I don’t think you should eat street meat, dude.

        • CyberneticOrganism

I found it under some old tires, I’m sure it’s fine.

          • Also, you’re the mayor of Metro City. Treat the office with a little dignity and put on a shirt for Pete’s sake.

          • CyberneticOrganism

You gotta project strength in Metro City, and showing off your massive chiseled torso is the only way to let those punks know you’re coming to clean up the streets, PERSONALLY.

  • I used to like Within the Ruins but everything I’ve heard off this new album is complete garbage.

    • lmao he literally screams “guitar” before the solo, what in the fuck is this?

      • That’s common enough if you’re, ya know, Motley Crue or Ratt or Warrant and it’s 1988.

      • that’s a pro move imo

        • RJA

good “guitar solo” in this one!

          • This was a real “don’t give a single fuck about anything” phase of his career

          • RJA

Such a weird track and weird placement on the album – not one of his better moments imo!

          • Aside from “Oh My God Whatever Etc” this one’s kind of a flop for me.

          • RJA

Pearls on a String was pretty nice too!

          • DARKBEARD

those two are really cuttin a rug

      • Howard Dean

        * . . .
        *I SAID, ‘GUITARRRR!!!!!’
        * . . .
        *snorting sounds
        *Jesus Christ, man

      • There’s a supremely excellent band called Electric Six, whose lead vocalist does that kind of thing. It’s way cool.

        • The Mighty Thorange

Electric Six are the fucking shit dude!

          • Cool, you like them! Some don’t. In fact I expected a few groans when I typed their name.

          • The Mighty Thorange

I can honestly see why. I always thought I would hate them until some friends of mine put on Dance Commander at some point during a drinking session and I was immediately a fan.

          • i discovered the song “Gay Bar” from the special features located on the Cabin Fever (2002) DVD, and have been a gigantic fan ever since! have you seen them live? they put on a gud show

          • The Mighty Thorange

No I haven’t. They do seem like they would be great live. But I don’t think they get many opportunities to play in Scotland unfortunately.

  • Señor Jefe El Rosa

    • tigeraid

I saw that blonde girl in the video running with that gun, and that was it for me.

      • Señor Jefe El Rosa

    • Sid Vicious Promos

      Wait, you like that band?

      • Señor Jefe El Rosa

        And you don’t?

        • Sid Vicious Promos

          I don’t enjoy them.

          • Señor Jefe El Rosa

            FALSE UNENTRY

    • Spear

The opening to that video tho

    • The Mighty Thorange

Eh. I can them or leave them to be honest. I know I usually agree with you on what is true and mighty but I could never get into these guys. And that video is pure fucking cringe.

  • Howard Dean

Whoa, was not aware that a new Dread Sovereign album was getting released. That title is pretty fucking cool.

Also: Interested in hearing Bear Mace solely on the name:

  • tigeraid

    New Dread Sovereign is great.

  • Dental_Damnation

I can’t believe how comprehensive this list is. How does he hear about all of these?!

    • Howard Dean

I think Spear and company comb the interwebz pretty regularly for updates. He’s quite the aggregator of new releases.

Also: Not sure if he utilizes this, but metal-archives keeps a fairly comprehensive running list of upcoming releases:

      • Rain Poncho W.

        It’s one of his sources.

    • Spear

I do indeed use the Metal Archives list HD posted. Metal Underground has an upcoming releases list as well that tends to catch a bunch of things that MA misses, and I do a little searching on Bandcamp too if I have time. I double check the dates on each list with official band/label outlets (Facebook, distro sites, etc.) to make sure I’m not putting anything in there that’s out already. I can’t account for everything, obviously- for example, the Hellish album this week had three different official release dates, so I just went with the UAR one- but I think I’m able to catch most everything this way. Music videos, singles, reissues, and “best of’s” don’t get covered.

It fluctuates week to week, but it generally takes me four or five hours to put together. Most songs don’t get more than a minute or so of listening from me, though I’ll always give whatever I feature a full listen. There are always a couple releases I’ll listen to that I don’t write about as well (Wolfheart this week), as I don’t feel I have the skill to write anything meaningful about them.

  • HessianHunter

Holy hell, The Senseless fucking rips

  • Waynecro

I think I’m really going to like that new Wolfheart album.

    • Spear

I preordered that one immediately after hearing the second song.

  • The Mighty Thorange

I clicked the link to SkeleToon as soon as I heard the word “powerest.” Was not disappointed.
