This Toilet Tuesday (2/14/17)

Welcome once again to This Toilet Tuesday! You all know the drill: new music, big list, author picks. W. and I found a couple good ones, but we’re hoping you can pick out a few more as well. Let us know what else we need to hear in the comments.

Hymn – Perish (Svart Records) [Death/Doom]
Listen to “Spectre”

Hymn falls into that comparatively underpopulated doom camp built by Godflesh: the riffs amount to little more than just extended strings of notes hammered down on a super-low register over a primitive caveman drum rhythm. Much like on Streetcleaner, the approach taken on Perish seams to be, “Crush listeners with absolutely massive walls of bottom-end,” but got dang, how massive that bottom end is! While you’ve heard riffs like this played with more aggression (by the likes of Conan) or with more artistry (Neurosis), there’s something immensely satisfying about the neanderthal savagery on display. Folks who like slamming their heads against concrete are sure to enjoy this. FFO: Nailbomb, Batillus, Coffinworm 2/17/17 (W.)

Pestifer – Execration Diatribes (Lavadome Productions) [Death Metal]

My knowledge of plain ol’ death metal- no prefixes, no subgenre addendum- is middling at best, so I don’t really have the best frame of reference to describe Pestifer. Suffice to say, though, they’re good enough that they dragged me out of tech land long enough to give Execration Diatribes a listen. Their music is fast, dark, and nasty, but with an undeniable penchant for smart songwriting; every riff sunk its hooks into me, and they only got deeper as the album went on. Pestifer are nothing if not devoted to their roots, their debut feels like a long-lost classic. 2/14/17 (Spear)

          • Rain Poncho W.

Yah, it’s decent enough to drink straight. I think it runs about $60 a fifth here. I would expect Viper to be more of a Smirnoff or Grey Goose guy.

          • Black Smallbeard

Grey Goose, talk about some overrated shit

          • GL

            Vodka is overrated shit. *frrrrrrrrp*

Same. I haven’t had vodka in several years, I think. The only time I ever get anything with it is if I feel like getting a White Russian.

  • Hans Moleman

Not a new release, and I’ve already posted on the fb, but Rehashed have made their back catalog available on Bandcamp.

Raptor King, Krowos, and Pestifer sound promising so far.
Had to pause Raptor King around the 2-minute mark to make sure there wasn’t something else playing simultaneously. They’ve got some stuff going on there.

  • The Mighty Thorange

How the fucking fuck hasve I never heard of Cnoc An Tursa? They are from my fucking hometown and I discover them on here! I need to get out more when I go home for the holidays.
