This Toilet Tuesday (1/27/15)

You wake up alone and confused, not knowing where you are or how you got there. Your head is spinning; you feel hung over, but you know you weren’t drinking last night. A quick glance of your surroundings suggests that you are in the attic of an old house. Molding boxes and bits of debris are illuminated by the sparse pale light streaming through the floorboards beneath you. Dazed, you get to your feet and make your way down the narrow staircase before you. The lower level is similar in appearance; old shattered furniture litters the floors and hallways, and tattered paintings of people without faces adorn the walls. You shudder and move on, eventually making your way to a door with a much brighter light shining beneath its crack and a low thrumming coming from beyond.

As you open it, you are greeted with a rush of air and a revolting stench. Black mold has filled the cracks in the ceiling and tiles of this bathroom, the shower curtain shredded, the broken mirror caked with dust. A desiccated corpse slumps over the bowl of a smashed toilet, its finger pointing to the wall opposite. You follow its direction with your eyes and, scribbled on the wall in what you assume to be the corpse’s feces, read:

Next to the hastily scrawled message, you notice a small window. Trying your best not to vomit, you step into the small room, over the corpse, and peer out. You see now that this shack sits at the edge of a tall cliff. Far below you lies a vast, barren wasteland, sickeningly yellow sands and small hills stretching as far as the eye can see. In the blackened sky above you, galaxies and stars swirl, explode, reform with unnatural speed. But what catches your eye is what lies directly ahead: an unfathomably tall monolith of shit. This fecal column stretches upwards further than you can follow; it also appears to be the source of both the light and the now-deafening droning sound from earlier. It is physically painful to behold, your body screaming at you to look away, but your mind is enthralled. Upon the gargantuan turd’s surface are folds within folds within folds, massive canyons of impossible shapes; every now and then you swear you can see a pained face emerge from one side, but it vanishes as quickly as it appears. Finally unable to withstand it anymore, your eyes burst, and you slump back against the wall. Exhausted, your body’s muscles all loosen, and you feel your pants fill with filth. You feel the jellied remains of your corneas slide down your cheeks and drip onto your chest, but it doesn’t matter; the repugnant glory of the monolith is etched permanently upon your sightless eyes. As you feel your last breath approaching, you reach your hand into your soiled trousers and add your own line to the shit-script on the wall:

lord dying

Lord Dying – Poisoned Altars (Relapse Records) [Sludge]

After a fairly successful debut in 2013, sludge bludgeoners Lord Dying return with their new long player, Poisoned Altars. There are still strong hints of High on Fire in their sound, but Poisoned Altars finds Lord Dying sounding like a band coming into their own. It riffs, it stomps, it infects your brain, its a pretty damn good album. If you’ve come here looking for the jamz, you’ve found them. (Leif Bearikson)

Xibalba – Tierra y Libertad (Southern Lord) [Hardcore/Death Metal]
Listen to “Enemigo,” “Invierno”

Xibalba is music to pummel to, and with Tierra y Libertad that statement rings true more than ever. Everything here sounds tighter, cleaner and possibly even angrier than anything the band has recorded so far. That’s a hell of a statement. The album art might bring to mind Artificial Brain, but the music is much more akin to being beaten to death with a bag full of hedgehogs. (Leif Bearikson)

Exgenesis – Aphotic Veil (Naturmacht Productions) [Black/Doom/Ambient/Fuck]

I didn’t know anything about Exgenesis going into this, but I figured they’d be pretty good as they’re signed to Naturmacht Productions (whose roster is astonishingly solid). Holy god damn was I right. Aphotic Veil opens with a massive foreboding chord that grabs you and drags you into a spiraling, muddy abyss. The album’s few quiet moments make the rest of the experience that much more suffocating; it is at once crushing and beautiful. Do not miss this record. (Spear)

napalm death

Napalm Death – Apex Predator – Easy Meat (Century Media) [Deathgrind]
Listen to “How the Years Condemn”

My good friend Edward is going to tell you how awesome this is in a full review, but I can’t restrain myself from commenting. Napalm Death have managed to craft something amazing on this, their 15th (!) album. And after more than three decades in the game, no less. What really impresses me about this album, though, is the way Shane Embury, Barney Greenway, Mitch Harris, and Danny Herrera keep finding ways to add more to their sound. Many veteran acts are content to rest on their laurels and sort of phone in later albums, but Napalm Death have been on a progressive upward trend for quite some time now, and Apex Predator –Easy Meat is no exception. But lest you worry that the grind is brushed to the side, fret not. This. Album. Goes. Hard. This thing is unrelenting. My pal Edward is going to tell you why this record is one of the first great albums of 2015, and I back that. Napalm Death have written the deathgrind album to beat in 2015. Let’s see how Cattle Decapitation respond. FFO: Phobia, Cattle Decapitation, OMAAF. (W.)

Melmak – Pig Songs (Independent) [Sludge]
Listen to “Live Dead,” “Suffering is a Pleasure”

I simply couldn’t pass up an opportunity to jam tracks from an album called Pig Songs, and Melmak certainly bring the filth. Composed of deadly duo Jonan and Igor, Melmak know how to write catchy and heavy as all hell sludge. Both tracks from Pig Songs I’ve gotten a chance to hear beat you about the head and neck with a gritty assault and fuzzed out vibe. “Suffering Is a Pleasure” is most definitely the stand-out track of the two, hulking and battering like some porcine monster. I look forward to hearing the rest of this. (W.)

  • Omg I’m not even close to done with catching up to my listening yet and fml

  • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

    Yay, Napalm Death!

  • Renan Ribeiro

I saw you bought Exgenesis because I am a Bandcamp stalker. That is a pretty solid release.

    • Spear

I couldn’t stop listening to it. So good.

      • Renan Ribeiro

The lead guitars are beautiful and gave me lotz ov feelz

      • Stanley

I’m digging this Exgenesis. It’s filling the void left by CoL’s hiatus. Not the same I know, but it takes me to a similar place.

        • old_man_doom

I’m pretty confident that CoL will come back. I hope so.

          • Stanley

I saw on FB that they are playing a festival in Southern California and they’ve also added two more dates (one in NY and on in Montreal). So they’re definitely not dead.

  • Edward/Breegrodamus

I’m loving the cover of that Pig Songs.

I picked up You, Whom I Have Always Hated at work today, so the rest of these albums will be put on hold until I have had a chance to digest that for a few listens. I wonder if it will give Napalm Death a run for their money…

  • Renan Ribeiro

BTW, that intro was some real D&D DM type shit

    • Spear

It’s the second-person perspective that does it.

  • Tyree

Oh jee wiz, I wonder where Ill Neglect got their name from.

    • MoshOff

          • Corey Tay Tay

            Me neither.

  • That new Napalm Death album is amazing. They just continue to outdo themselves. Going to see them next week in NYC, excited to say the least.

    • DDubya.

I have no idea how they keep getting better this late in their career.

      • 4 things are certain in life:
        2. Taxes
        3. Death
        4. Napalm Death

        • DDubya.

“Dismiss this life. Worship [Napalm] Death!”

  • Renan Ribeiro

This has been my favorite album of 2015 so far, and it dropped yesterday. Great doom that is heavy, enthralling yet didn’t lose the rock n’ roll essence. Also featuring Carl Sagan and science-y fiction-y sounds.

  • This is excellent work, Spear. I’mma listen to the new Xibalba and hate mosh my coworkers to death all day.

    • Renan Ribeiro

I know this is from the previous album but you can scream HASTA LA MUERTE when the cops come to arrest you. I’m sure you’ll be able to make bail on millions of blog dollars.

    • MoshOff

      You mean “Odio Mosh”, right?

      • Bro, how can you pronounce ‘Xibalba’?

        Like ‘shibalbah’? lol

        • I thought it was like “zih-bal-ba-ba-ba-ba”

          • You probably got it, señor “Yóu Trash an quil”

          • DDubya.

            Clearly þeeballba.

          • I believe it’s closer to “zih-bal-buttz.”

          • Tyree
          • Tairíi likes Morbi Ényel!

          • what that name means, anyways?

          • I think it’s the Mayan version of hell.

          • DDubya.

Bingo. And it’s more like Cheeballbuh

          • YourLogicIsFlushed

Watch The Fountain by Aronofsky, the movie is ok, but the soundtrack is unreal, as is expected from Clint Mansell. There’s some Cheeballbuh talk in there.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

Aronofsky lost me on that one.

          • YourLogicIsFlushed

It’s not his best, that’s for sure, but I thought it was worth a watch.

          • I watched it but apparently I don’t remember any of it.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

Did you see his newest, I think it had Russell Crowe?

          • YourLogicIsFlushed

Yeah man, Noah was pretty sweet. It got a lot of hate but I liked it, except for the end. The end could have been better.

          • DDubya.

My understanding is that it is much more based on a Jewish mysticism account of the Flood than a Biblical account, which is an interesting take. Hence the Nephilim and whatnot.

          • YourLogicIsFlushed

Oh really? I thought that was just some bullshit he made up. Bible stories kick so much more ass if you add rock monsters though. So sweet.

          • Guacamole Jim

“And yea, Jesus went out into the wilderness and fought the rock monster for 40 days and nights, and did prevail against it.”
            – 2 Mark 3:14-16

          • DDubya.

Nah, I read that he drew pretty heavily from the Apocrypha, and the Nephilim are featured pretty heavily in certain books, especially the Book of Enoch (Noah’s ancestor). #toiletofoldtestament

          • torahovhell?

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

I dated a chick off and on for four and half years that was Jewish, at one point I considered converting to Judaism from my non-religious position now. Seems kind of silly in retrospect, haha.

          • awwww <3

          • Damn, that’s a big commitment. But you could totally pull the Tim Whatley from there.

          • YourLogicIsFlushed

            You anti-dentite

          • it had some great stuff, and i’d been wanting to see the story ever since hearing it as a kid. but russell crowe’s logic in the end of the movie… how does one even?

          • Yúr lóyic is floshed

          • now, that’s interesting!!

        • MoshOff

        • Pagliacci is Kvlt/Not Sludge

        • HessianHunter

I just say the “x” like it’s a “z”. Isn’t the actual sound supposed to be kind of like something in between “z” and “sh”?

      • Moshy, you need to help me with a list of bad pronounced usernames in spanish. I was speaking with Guacamole last week and have a few laugh writing the names how I can pronounce them. Like ‘Eduardo nigrodámus’ jaajaja

        • DDubya.

When I was visiting Honduras, no one could figure out how to pronounce my name. The W is pretty uncommon in Spanish.

          • MoshOff

          • of course, señor DiDubia

          • Renan Ribeiro

          • MoshOff

          • DDubya.

This is actually how they would usually say it.

          • MoshOff

            I figured haha.

          • HessianHunter

Also, saying words/names that start with “s” is totally unnatural for native Spanish speakers. Figured that one out hanging in Mehiko.

          • DDubya.

Unless you’re @moshoff:disqus, then you pronounce it with a slight lisp. Like Thpain.

          • MoshOff

If any of you ever heard me speak YOU WOULDN’T BE SAYING SUCH MEAN AND HURTFUL ZINGS

          • DDubya.

          • MoshOff

In all zeriousness, every English speaker I’ve talked to doesn’t think twice about calling me “American”, although my American accent is apparently an un-placeable mix of Central PA and a bunch of other stuff (via the Internet and such).

          • DDubya.

Interesting. I shall be calling you this evening to verify.

          • my spoken english is very bad, I’ve never had good classes of oral language x_x

          • The Bestest Tapir

I feel you. I can’t pronounce some words correctly and sound like I’m extremely depressed (damn you Finnish language!).

          • MoshOff

I think that’s the bane of Spanish-speaking countries: historically HORRIBLE english teachers/teaching methods.

          • It’s very bad. I didn’t learn anything new in my high-school. Everything I learned was from music, console RPG and some readings ._.)

          • #LeaveMoshOffAlone >_<)

          • I got serious issues in the words with middle -s after a vowel. Like ‘después’ (after), but that’s because our regional accent delete all of those letters x_x

          • DDubya.

I find the differences in pronunciation of ll interesting.

          • in Latin América we pronounce the LL the same as Y. That’s the worst thing of spanish. Every country speaks it in different accent.

          • DDubya.

I picked up the ejhe type pronunciation somewhere, but I’m not sure where.

          • MoshOff

I think the “LL” the same as “Y” is a thing in most Spanish accents. It is in Spain, for sure.

          • Moshy.. This is the accent of the city I live. I born in a city next to that one, but we don’t have the accent too much hard like the one that born here:

          • MoshOff

That’s actually a lot like the accent in the Canary Islands.

          • Yes! This region was very isolated of the rest of the country and that’s why it’s more different. It’s a mix between cuban and the Canary Islands! It’s very unique, but I really despise it, because people in this city tend to speak in a high-pitched annoying voice. And in the city I born we still use the ‘vos’ but with less hard sounding accent.

Those commercials are very accurate, actually. You can hear the annoying woman and old man voice. Imagine that in a 3pm in a bus full of people and with 35 Cº in a traffic stop…

        • MoshOff

          Linc “De Druid” Leonjárt

    • Edward/Breegrodamus

Joe I like keeping up with the music you listen to and the adverse effects it will have on your coworkers, lol. See also: DsO.

    • Definitely gonna be picking that one up when I get home. Heavy poop.

  • Also that new Black Sheep Wall is one big clusterfuck. Very disappointed because I really enjoyed the last one.

  • Nordling Rites ov Kahlua

No blurb for Archgoat or Callisto? FLUSH!
I mean, I get that Saor didn’t get one it’s a re-release but then there’s also Thulcandra and Voices? WHERE ARE THEY!?

    • “Be the change you want to see in the toilet”

      • Edward/Breegrodamus

        Joe Ghandikill

      • Nordling Rites ov Kahlua

        Challenge… wait for it… accepted.

        • DDubya.

Seriously though, if you want in on the blurbs per week, I can add you to our little system on FB.

          • Nordling Rites ov Kahlua

Yeah, sure. I suppose there will be another week with an album I might say a thing or two about.

    • Spear

I know! I wanted to cover like six bands this week, but I was really strapped for time.

  • Renan Ribeiro

I am definitely relocating just for my love of music alone. It costs me 49.18 BRL to pick up the new Lord Dying LP. Guess what is the shipping costs? 49.18 BRL as well.

So not only am I paying double the price to get it here, it would also get picked up by fucking customs and get taxed some 30 or 40% more. YAY

    • Edward/Breegrodamus

Move to Minnesota there are great hospitals here, besides just the Mayo of course.

      • Renan Ribeiro

        Also, lakes.

        • Edward/Breegrodamus

The land of 10,000 lakes, and treatment centers.

      • Renan Ribeiro

Regardless of where I end up, I’ll do a massive road trip as soon as I have money and some down time. Those vacation plans are at the top of my vacations list.

  • Tyree

    That Atomicide is fucking disgusting.

  • This is also a good week of album art from the looks of it.

  • DDubya.

Man, that intro was horrifying. I loved it. Lots of goodies to jam in my ear-holes this week.

  • Hubert, Goat ov/of SATAN!!!!!

The new Napalm Death is delicious.

  • DDubya.

By the way, for some reason Apex Predator – Easy Meat is listed on Spotify as having been released in 1980 for some reason.

    • Renan Ribeiro

The second riff in Smash a Single Digit is amazing

    • its because Napalm Death is doing cross promotion with Hot Tub Time Machine 2. See Hot Tub Time Machine 2 In theaters February 20th 2015 and don’t forget to pick up Napalm Death’s new album Apex Predator- Easy Meat on January 27th 2015.

      • DDubya.
      • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

I’m so excited for that movie because I would be.

        • It can’t possibly be as good as the first. I’m fully expecting to be angry-level disappointed. Kinda like with that shit that was Kick Ass 2.

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

I loved the first one. I think this one will be good if not better due to the premise of going to the future.

          • I hope so.

It was really easy to recreate the eighties for the first one when it all took place at a ski resort haha.

  • JAJAJAJAJA. THIS COMMENT: “Black Cilice – Mysteries (Iron Bonehead) [Black Metal]Listen to “To Become” (WARNING: RECORDED IN ALL CAPS. REDUCE VOLUME IF YOU VALUE YOUR EARS) (EDITOR NOTE/ADDITIONAL WARNING: Stay tuned for Masterlord’s review)”. #fuckingALLCAPSPRODUCTION!!!!!!

    My first #LinkPickThisToiletTuesday is #TechyProggyTastyness

  • Renan Ribeiro

BTW, I’m feeling the clean singing in Lord Dying’s An Open Sore. Seems like they’re bridging Red Fang and High On Fire, and that totally totes mah goats.

  • You really outdid yourself with this foul tale, Shining Spear.

  • The Bestest Tapir

My nipples are so hard while listening to the new Napalm Death!

  • Guacamole Jim

    Fucks so much good today.

Man, dat new Lord Dying and Exgenesis >>>>>>>>
      New thulcandra too?

  • Howard Dean

  • Tyree

Not released today but it’s a 2015 release and it’s evils and stuffs.

  • Howard Dean

I totally forgot Hate were releasing a new album. Byah to excellent surprises! Also a good day for bands starting with the letter V: Venom, Visigoth, and Voices. I’ll take it!

  • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

I’m listening to the new Papa Roach album so I can give it a proper review for my Facebook. I hate myself for doing this.

  • The Bestest Tapir
  • Hey guys, anyone listen to the new Ghoulgotha? It’s like simultaneously the best and the worst. It’ll be doing some wonderful gnarly OSDM/Doom riffs, then suddenly they just break out into random notes trying to be proggy or something. It hurts me because the Death/Doom is so good, but then the “proggy” part is so bad.

They’re playing in April in raleigh. We might go

      • You going to Napalm Death this Friday?

        • BLXKKBEXRD

          • Winston Salem! with Voivod, Iron Reagan, Exhumed, and Black Crown Initiate

          • BLXKKBEXRD

Das a pretty long ride, so I doubt it, not knowing beforehand.

          • DUUUUUDE it’s a friday!

          • BLXKKBEXRD

I work this sat bro 🙁

          • Aww, man. Yeah I understand that feeling. I missed a few great shows this month because of work

          • Are you working on Thursday perhaps? And want to drive down and see my band open for Alestorm Wednesday night? Pretty please?

          • BLXKKBEXRD

I really would man, but I am working. That’s a 2 or 3 hour ride. Maybe if I were younger

          • Haha no biggie. We plan on coming over to you guys in Raleigh this summer

          • BLXKKBEXRD

I grew up in raleigh, but I live in the mountains bro, play in asheville. Will vouch for the mothlight as a venue now

          • You got me mixed up. We only know the Seduction over in Wilkesboro, but I don’t know how much pull they have in Asheville. I’ll try to find a connection there and get us there, we want to start playing the Carolinas instead of just Charlotte

          • BLXKKBEXRD

Wilkesboro is a long ass ride from here too

          • I just googled wilkesboro, we’re closer to asheville than they are haha. I will find a way there

          • BLXKKBEXRD

Yep, wilkesboro is a small ass smelly town. Bout a 20 min ride from boone

    • Scrimm

Usually Dark Descent is unflushable. Been meaning to check this out.

  • RustyShackleford

Damn good Tuesday. Lord Dying, Melmak, and Xibalba are my jams. Yep!

    • DDubya.

  • question: as somebody who doesn’t enjoy doom, do you recommend i check out some “DOOOOOOM”?

  • Doesn’t matter how much Napalm Death brought it on their latest. WE ALL KNOW DAMNED WELL that Cattle Decap will destroy everyone in 2015.

    • DDubya.

I’m very interested to see how they stack up. Monolith was untouchable.

      • On Monolith of Inhumanity Cattle Decap served notice to all of their peers. It simply read: “you suck in comparison.”

    • Edward/Breegrodamus

I dunno, JAG. I just dunno.

(it’s hard to make a winky face on Disqus)

    • Tyree

    • PhoenixKing Leonhart

Mithras would like a word with you, Jay

  • Mother Shabubu III

I heard Cattle Decap had someone get stabbed at their show this month.

  • Stockhausen

You have out-pooped yourself, Spear. Excellent, excellent work.

  • PhoenixKing Leonhart

Xibalba and Napalm go hard. I wonder if Sunn O))) mixed this album like they did with Hasta la Muerte?

Also, besides having a really cool band name, I’m really digging Ancient Wind. They have a Dissection/recent Immortal thing going on.

    • Lacertilian

Yeah, Ancient Wind is sounding like that oh so common BlackenedPowerTechThrash to me.

  • PhoenixKing Leonhart

Oh and kudos for that opening story, Spear. Scary shit. Literally.

  • Code

I’m curious. I quit reading Metalsucks for many reasons…one including their “new albums” posts would frequently have something that actually DID NOT release that week. Now I see the same thing here. Am I missing something? Hate doesn’t drop until Feb 10.

    • DDubya.

Releases are a tricky thing. Many that are listed here have staggered release dates or may only be released in one format. Spear combines all the releases for a week as listed on Metal Archives.

      • Code

American based site should show North American release dates. By the time it comes out, I may have forgot. I purchase anywhere from 1 to 10 albums a week so I hate to see some slip through the cracks due to not being on the correct weeks release list.

        • DDubya.

You know, we have readers in other countries too…

  • CT-12

Damn, enough albums come out today? Also, that new Lord Dying is sick and everybody should check it out. Can’t wait to hit the record store today!!!!

  • Lacertilian

Insepulto was cool along with Deprive, or maybe I just enjoy bands with ‘sepult’ in their names.

  • J.R.

Totes thought that opening was a riff on “Actual Cannibal Shia LaBeouf”

Also, Hail Visigoth. Ethereal was pretty good too. Callisto would definitely be something I’d get, though I only enjoy post metal at my desk where I can sit and brood.
