Welcome to the final Toilet Tuesday of 2015! As this is a fairly slow week (and I’m going to be travelling as I finish writing this), I’m going to keep it short. You know the drill: good stuff below, followed by the rest of the stuff, followed by your stuff. Dig through that list and see what we might have missed.

dendritic arbor

Dendritic Arbor – Sentient Village/Obsolescent Garden (Independent) [Grindskronk]
Listen to “Keratoconus”

Dendritic Arbor already dropped one killer release this year. I would have been totally cool with them taking it easy, but no, the quintet just had to go and record another EP of scabrous, riotous chaos. If you missed Romantic Love, let me give you the skinny on Dendritic Arbor. They play mathcore, but a much more deranged version of the type proffered by The Chariot or Dillinger Escape Plan. If you press play on “Keratoconus” you’ll hear a mixture of grind, skronk, math metal, and noise. Intriguingly, though, I’m hearing a lot more black metal in this track than on anything from Romantic Love. This is audible chaos for the intrepid metal fan. FFO: Okazaki Fragments, Oblivionized, Genevieve 12/30/15 (W.)

dawn of a dark age

Dawn of a Dark Age – The Six Elements, Vol.4 Air (Nemeton Records) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Argon Van Beethoven (1%)”

Dawn of a Dark Age caught my attention with last year’s Water for its unconventional (but effective) use of clarinet over black metal chaos. Fire, released earlier this year, saw a noticeable improvement in both production and songwriting, and Air takes it a step further. The angry parts are angrier and the jazzy parts are jazzier, and it all comes together in a package that feels much more coherent and complete than the previous two. If you like your black metal with a dash of weird, then this one is for you. 1/1/16 (Spear)

Of course RIP Lemmy. And Gates of Ishtar is back to play shows in honor of their first album.

  • That Gorepot album art is great. Gettin’ high with Sasquatch.

  • Boss the Damage Case Ross

Words cannot describe what the metal community is feeling right now with the loss of Lemmy, but knowing that our music will continue to strive into 2016 and beyond is a great consolation. We must carry on his spirit, Lemmy is not and will never be replaceable, but he lives on through the music.

    • KJM, Shake Zula

“If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.”

    • Eliza

Lemmy was a man who truly lived his life to the fullest. He may be gone, but his legacy will love on.

      • KJM, Shake Zula

All that and he lived a productive, useful life contributing to the world around him. Even those who didn’t lead quite the same lifestyle were still inspired by him and showed respect.

        • Eliza

          Indeed.

    • Óðinn

  • Maik Beninton™

    Black Metal/industrial?
    Sure why not!

    • Maik Beninton™

      Well, this is weird.

    • ┼yree

I honestly don’t hear the black metal or the industrial. Sounds more like some kind of strange avant garde hardcore.

Pass. A weak list this week in my opinion.

      • Maik Beninton™

True, I mean there is some tremolo picking riffs here and there, but the whole thing sounds a lot more like hardcore.

      • KJM, Shake Zula

Maybe on another day I’ll care about new music, but not today.

        • Maik Beninton™

Make a note to check out Witchhelm on that day, pretty good psychedelic doom.

          • Boss the Damage Case Ross

KJM is the one who turned me on to Witchhelm.

          • KJM, Shake Zula

I’ve been shouting out Witchhelm all this year. Conjuring and Invocations are ‘best of 2015’ albums for me.

      • Dubs

I checked it out yesterday based on the description. It’s… hard to pigeonhole that one. There were some interesting elements, but the whole of each song didn’t seem to jell properly.

    • CyberneticOrganism

Woof, that is not good stuff.

  • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Well, the Shining Spear hates me (and so does Dubz, he is to blame of this evil), so here’s a blurb he didn’t include:

“If you don’t know Xibalba, I don’t blame you – they existed only for a brief while in the early-to-mid 90’s. Best known for the kvlt-klassik ‘Ah Dzam Poop Ek’.They combined atmosphere and a harmonic rage into pre-Hispanic folk-influence. Unfortunately, the band faded into obscurity a couple of years after their sole full-lengths release. They made an attempt at reunion in mid 00’s but disappeared without making too many ripples.
Some five years ago the band once again reunited, though billed everywhere as plain Xibalba – now officially called Xibalba Itzaes (I blame legal reasons similar to why Ghost has added a BC to their name in the US, or easier differentiation – particularly a group of hardcore kids who don’t know how to keep their noses from where they don’t belong) and now they’re finally releasing ‘Ah Tzam’, an Ep of all new material. Unfortunately the only streaming song doesn’t quite hit tge two minutes mark, so it’s hard to make accurate oredictions based on it. Much like their full-length, not even bringing their distinctive branch of black metal up to date (not that there’s a need), I have a good feeling about this. I only hope the folk-influence will make itself apparent on the other tracks”

    • Vault Dweller

No joke, that write-up actually made me interested where I was not before. Gonna check that out, thanks Bear.

      • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

I’ve only recently started dwelling on this album. I dig.

        • Dubs

          Hehehe poop

        • ┼yree

It has the word “Poop” in it so I’m sold.

        • ┼yree

I’m really digging this album. Lots of Darkthrone thrown in this. I would have completely skipped over this band if you wouldn’t have posted this.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

I heard the name randomly from a special Terrorizer mag about black metal. But never checked out. Digging so far.

          • ┼yree

Yeah, Killer riffs, sick vocals, and near perfect production. Digging the Mexican culture (Instruments) during some of the interludes too; adds a unique twist. No real complaints from me.

          Hashtags <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Tis not Spear’s fault. There was a miscommunication.

      • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

(I edited it to include you)

        • Dubs

          Ah, yah, that’s more accurate.

I highly recommend you tell the large, face-tatted Latino bros in Xibalba that.

  • in September Lemmy was on the WTF Podcast (with Marc Maron). it’s a great listen if you didn’t catch it:
    http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episodes/episode_634_-_richard_thompson_lemmy_kilmister

    • CyberneticOrganism

I heard that one as well. At the time I thought the he sounded like he was days from death and wouldn’t make it through the year. Sucks, man. Everyone thought he would live to a hundred.

      • KJM, Shake Zula

Eh, I’m honestly amazed he made it to 70.

        • CyberneticOrganism

A bottle of Jack a day is not a good long-term health plan, but it does give you ultimate “nothing can kill this guy” mystique.

    • Hans Müller

Thanks, only heard of Lemmy’s passing just now and been listening to a lot of WTF lately. Gonna put this on right away.

  • Maik Beninton™

Graveborn is pretty good, it’s mixed up with skronk and has screamed voclas rather than the usual low growled vocals.

    • Guppusmaximus

Yea, I thought the vocals were bad. Not that I’m against screaming – this guy just doesn’t have “it”. I miss the old school Hardcore screaming.

    • They are not bad. At least they sound a little different from most bands playing this style.

  • 365ChaosRiddenDays

Great loss but the music is still here for our pleasure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSsqavYIgNc

  • Matt Pike’s Sweaty Left Nipple

Holy shit!! New Insision?! I had no idea they were about to release a new album (finally)!! Fucking awesome!! ‘Revealed and Worshipped’ used to be one of my favorite death metal albums back in the day. Carl’s dry grunting vocals are fairly unique in DM/BDM, and I look forward to checking out the new record!

    • ┼yree

Beneath the Folds of Flesh was a sick album.

      • Matt Pike’s Sweaty Left Nipple

Yesss!! And the band’s former bass player Daniel Ekeroth literally wrote the book on ‘”Swedish Death Metal.”

        • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Good book, though his love for Entombed and his disdain for Norwegian Black Metal, was a bit annoying at times.

          • Matt Pike’s Sweaty Left Nipple

He’s clearly biased, but it’s still a decent read nonetheless IMO.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Yes, you said it best. Biased, but a good read.

          • Catastrophic Buttsekx

The Swedes and Norwegians’ rivalry was discussed a lot in Lords Of Chaos. Dunno why, they’re practically the same.

          • Sir Tapir The Based

            Norwegians >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> poop >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Swedes

          • Catastrophic Buttsekx

Ok, as a Fin, what’s the beef between you guys, Sweden and Finland. As far as I can tell, Iceland got left out of the whole deal (outside of my grandma on my mom’s side hating Danes).

          • Sir Tapir The Based

Well, Finland was a part of Sweden for hundreds of years. The time spent under Sweden’s rule wasn’t exactly the best. We’re neighbouring countries with a long history, of course there’s going to be rivalry. Also, your grandma seems like a nice lady
            #DanesAreTheWorst

          • Catastrophic Buttsekx

Familiar with Finland’s history during World War 2? You guys actually had the world’s deadliest sniper to this day, and one of the smallest and most efficient armies in WW2.

          • Sir Tapir The Based

Simo Häyhä was his name. I ain’t best with the army stuff since I am a traitor to my country.

          • Catastrophic Buttsekx

Lol, I don’t think Finland has had an army since WW2. Now that Putin’s got a border boner though……….

          • Sir Tapir The Based

We’ve got an army. Every male has to join the army or they can choose civilian service or jail instead. I chose civilian service.

          • Machine That Yells At Farts

            What does that include?

          • more beer

            What does civilian service entail?

          • Sir Tapir The Based

Basically it’s a year of working instead of LARPing in the woods with a gun. I did mine in a hospital.

          • more beer

Personally I would have gone and played war. As long as the country isn’t actually at war. That sounds kind of fun. I worked in a hospital for a year. I saw a lot of fucked up shit. So based on that. Playing war is the better option to me.

          • Sir Tapir The Based

As a pacifist pooper army was not for me. The year I spent working in a hospital was pretty nice. Sure I saw some nasty shit and had to deal with drug addicts, but I enjoyed The year. Got to walk many kilometers a day.

          • more beer

If you were really a traitor. You would have chosen jail.

          • Sir Tapir The Based

I’ve been called a traitor for choosing civilian service many many times by our nice nationalists.

          • more beer

I thought you had just come home from on of their meetings yesterday. That you were then getting ready for your goose stepping class. So did they call you a traitor, then beat you, and force you to join them.

        • ┼yree

Never read it. Then again I can’t tell you the last time I read a book or what book it was. I’m pretty much human garbage.

    • BLACKBEARD UNFILTERED

Is it better than a wet grunt, tho?

      • CyberneticOrganism

        Burbling grunts.

      • Matt Pike’s Sweaty Left Nipple

        Less mess to clean up.

That Lascar album has been in my Bandcamp wishlist for awhile now. It’s some tasty DSBM/TnSBM. Hopefully the whole thing will stream on 1/1/16.

Reminds me when I saw Tribulation play all the chalk and shit they covered themselves with was flying everywhere during the set.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

            At least Tribulation is good.

          • ┼yree

I was curious to know if you liked Tribulation or not. I can’t get into that new album at all. It is what it is I guess, all well.

          • The Horror was rill gud… did they change styles or something?

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

I don’t own a thing by them, but anything I have heard I like.

          • BLACKBEARD UNFILTERED

They were aight live. Only their new material was any good imo

    • ┼yree

      Let me guess. Drum triggers?

      • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Probably some drum poopers in there too.

        • ┼yree

Just a drum set covered in polished gold turds.

      • drum trigger played by a robot. FA is yet another band that could be really good if they figured out mixing/mastering, etc.

    • i found a leak of that and the new Anthrax. not sure if excited…

      • Janitor Jim Duggan

I won’t listen to the new Anthrax until it comes out. Same with the new Megadeth.

        • Sir Tapir The Based

          Both are gonna SUUUUUUUCK

        • The new Anthrax, Jim….it’s not good. I really wanted it to be good, cuz Worship Music was awesome, but this album just doesn’t have it…it’s just so lazy…but the new Megadeth should hopefully make up for it.

          • more beer

What did you expect? At this point Scott Ian is too busy thinking he is a writer. Along with thinking he can do spoken word tours. That has to be like taking an entire bottle of Ambien, He is no Jello Biafra that’s for sure. If I was you I wouldn’t have an expectation of the new Megadeth being good ether.

          • I actually have faith in Megadeth, I mean, they got Chris Adler and Kiko whatever his last name is on this album. It should be good.

          • more beer

I never really liked Megadeth all that much. But it doesn’t matter who is in the band. They are going to have to do whatever, Dave tells them to do. Or else they won’t be in the band.

          • I mean, it’s probably one of my most anticipated albums of next year so far, along with the new Dream Theater, but that’s not saying much. I’m really hyping up the new Gojira, too.

          • Óðinn

I dunno. That Kiko dude (or whoever he is) is in a lame-ass Symphonic Power Metal band.

          • Well yeah, but that doesn’t mean Megadeth is going to go all power metal. And he’s WAY better than the previous guitarist.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

            Damnit.

          • Sorry if I killed any hype…I just needed to tell you. You may like it, though. Listen to the leak, I mean, why not?

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

I’ll wait until it comes out. I don’t illegally download albums that haven’t come out yet.

          • Okay…don’t get mad at me…but I re-listened to it a few hours ago….and my God has it grown on me. It’s one hell of an album. (I’ve been known to have bipolar thoughts on things, so sorry for such a dramatic change on my opinion of the album.)

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

            It’s fine.

          • I know, I’m a fuckface. I was in a pissy mood yesterday as well, so that may have affected the way it sounded to me.

        • Óðinn
      • It stinks, and this is coming from someone who loves Worship Music.

    • Xinen

Well I liked what I’ve heard so far. Not my favorite band certainly but they do have moments I like.

  • Catastrophic Buttsekx

OK, a vague one, and figure to ask you guys about it……… my roomie is trying to remember a band that sounds like Tool, kinda mainstream that starts with an S. I’m stumped on this one.

    • ┼yree

      Soen probably.

      • Catastrophic Buttsekx

Listening to it now, and I think you nailed it.

        • Dubs

Tell him to also check out Rishloo if he hasn’t heard them.

          • Catastrophic Buttsekx

            Will do!

          • Catastrophic Buttsekx

Lol, when he said “band that sounds like Tool”, I automatically thought of most prog metal and Djent bands I know.

      • Guppusmaximus

‘Tellurian’ is amazing because of it’s dynamic contrast. I call it the latest Tool album (a bit in jest) but it really is much more than that. The way they fused the Tool & Opeth sound with strong songwriting and solid musicianship, it just blows the doors off their debut. It’s very deceptive and if you don’t give it some time then you miss out out on how it unfolds. I really just loved the transitions. (Sorry for the long rant)

          • Catastrophic Buttsekx

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I showed that band to him and it’s not them. He’ll have to figure this on his own.

          • Guppusmaximus

LOL! Well, unfortunately, you’ll never know how Tool sounds to him. So, maybe this other band doesn’t sound anything like Tool. I’ve had that happen before.

            {In my car}
Buddy: ” Hey, what CD is that? Sounds like Metallica”
Me: ” Nope. Defiance – Beyond Recognition”
Buddy: “Wow, I would’ve never have known it wasn’t Metallica”
Me: “WTF are u talking about? It doesn’t really sound anything like Metallica!”
Buddy: “Well it does to me.”

A little (actual) shoegaze with your doom?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jpNZob-cLM

    • Sir Tapir The Based

I’m gonna have to NOPE on this one.

      • KJM, Shake Zula

Stoner, Sludge, and sometimes Black are the only things that really go well with Doom.

          • KJM, Shake Zula

            <3

          • Catastrophic Buttsekx

There’s a couple of good bands. But many many shoegaze bands that do it better. Most blackgaze bands honestly sound like My Bloody Valentine ripoffs with black metal vocals, and none of the chops of Ride, Slowdive, Myra, Jesus And Mary Chain, etc.

          • Sir Tapir The Based

MBV is a bad, overrated band.

          • Machine That Yells At Farts

A bit overrated. I love ‘Loveless’, but if you go to pretty much any shoegaze forum, they drive that fucking album into the ground. The new CD was fucking awful, and sounded like it was recorded in a trash getting knocked around in a wind tunnel. Even Fartthrone has better production!

          • Sir Tapir The Based

And unlike MBV, Darkthrone has made actual good songs!

          • Machine That Yells At Farts

Not after their very first one. After that, they went into cartoonish riffs that sound like they play on rubber guitars, and production that sounds like it was recorded in Oscar The Grouch’s garbage can, with vocals done by Oscar himself.

          • Catastrophic Buttsekx

Tell me where the black metal was in that song. 🙂
Not everything has to be filthy, grim, and brutal, you know. *runs for cover*

Admittedly, ‘Sabbath Worship’ is my preferred style.

          • Boss the Damage Case Ross

It is mine too, though Candlemass kicks major ass. With a different kind of Sabbath worship.

    • Sir Tapir The Based

      Why?

      • Machine That Yells At Farts

Just too much clutter in my inbox, and keeping my FB to just keeping up with friends (mostly ones back in Chicago).

This is pretty good! Sounds a lot like David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’, with some death folk type vocals.

          • Sir Tapir The Based

They be from my hometown. The singer was cray cray and is dead.

          • Machine That Yells At Farts

            What happened? Suicide I’m guessing?

          • Sir Tapir The Based

Suicide by overdosing on drugs (his last name was Mömmö, which basically means drugs). The guy spent time in mental institution.

          • Machine That Yells At Farts

            Damn, that sucks.

          • Machine That Yells At Farts

Listening to some more of their stuff, and sounds A LOT like Oasis outside of the vocals!

          • Sir Tapir The Based

All I hear while listening to Oasis is shit shit shit, while Mana Mana is really good.

          • Machine That Yells At Farts

Mana Mana’s good, just sounds a lot like Oasis on that one song.

          • Sir Tapir The Based

I’ll let everybody know how it was. It’ll be my first time seeing IMAX 3D, might as well do it in a big way.

        • Boss the Damage Case Ross

I’ve heard it transfers well to 3D, should be fun.

        • Catastrophic Buttsekx

IMAX is good, even without 3D. I saw Planet Earth at an IMAX place years back, and it was fucking amazing.

      • Catastrophic Buttsekx

I’ll never see it. I’m a Trekkie, but then again I won’t see the new Star Trek movie that’s coming up. The second one that Abrams did was awful. Hoping that they’d get someone like Del Toro to do it, and Abrams gets around to doing a Cloverfield sequel or a Fringe movie.

        • KJM, Shake Zula

I’m taking a leap of faith on this one cos everything else I’ve seen by Abrams sucked ass, especially the first Trek movie, Super 8, and Cloverfield.

          • Machine That Yells At Farts

I loved Cloverfield! Smoked up and saw that in theaters. It’s definitely got a thing that’s not for everyone. True, the creature showed up little by little, but beat the fuck out of the new Godzilla, where the creature didn’t show up until the last quarter of the film, Cloverfield built up the dread bit by bit, and that’s what I loved about it. That and unlike the new Godzilla, it was a total wrecking machine, rather than a protector of mankind. Like the original Godzilla!
First Trek movie wasn’t too bad, and Super 8 was fucking awful. Abrams hasn’t done anything truly brilliant since Fringe and Touch, both of which are some of the best shows ever made.

          • KJM, Shake Zula

1st Trek movie sucked big beefy buffalo balls, and even the 1998 Godzilla(which I saw with a freshly sprained ankle) was better than Cloverfield.

          • BLACKBEARD UNFILTERED
          • Machine That Yells At Farts

To each their own! I loved watching Cloverfield ruining shit.

            I haven’t seen it yet,

Oh man, you gotta see that.

          • KJM, Shake Zula

As I’ve said, it’s hard for me to put much trust in Abrams after seeing what he did with Star Trek.

          • Boss the Damage Case Ross

Fair enough. It’s on Netflix, if you’d like to give the first episode a chance.

          • Machine That Yells At Farts

All the love for it here! BTW, I’m asking around and making sure whether it’s my comp or if everyone’s having this prob. The TOH page is looking scrunched up, and the print is really small.

          • KJM, Shake Zula

          • KJM, Shake Zula

That Kylo Ren sure has a problem controlling his temper. Vader was cool as a cucumber compared to him.

          • Boss the Damage Case Ross

            Yes he does.
I’m hoping they keep his character dark and don’t try any redemption story with him. We need the evil character that stays evil.

          • KJM, Shake Zula

I’m afraid you’re gonna be disappointed there with Ren. You’re better off sticking with Phasma or Snoke.

          • Boss the Damage Case Ross

Phasma was in it for two seconds and Snoke, well, we’ll see with him. I’m just holding on a bit for Kylo Ren.

Rey is probably my favorite character in the movie though, besides the guy at the very end.
