Sometimes, the metal gods see fit to give us a slow week for new music. Sometimes- especially this time of year, when we’ve been highlighting all the other great things that you’ve probably missed- that can be a good thing. I only just got around to listening to Exercises In Futility in full a couple days ago (and will be doing twenty “Hail Satans” as penance for sleeping on it so long). In any case, we’ve grabbed a couple gems from the list and presented them below; feel free to find something we have missed and share it with the class.

ashen horde

Ashen Horde – Nine Plagues (Mandol Records) [Progressive Black Metal]
Listen to “Feral”

The progressive elements used by Ashen Horde may not seem obvious at first, but as “Feral” unwinds, the atypical bits rise from their graves like bloodthirsty zombies. If you want to hear a black metal band straying from the beaten path (and indulging in more crisp production), fast forward to 2:28. FFO: Keep of Kalessin, Bite Wound, Ihsahn 12/15/15 (W.)

batushka

Batushka – Litourgiya (Witching Hour Productions) [Black Metal]
Stream

Holy crap. If this album had dropped earlier in the year, I guarantee we would be seeing this on more year-end lists. It’s huge, boasting one of the heaviest-sounding rhythm sections I’ve heard all year. It’s unconventional, melding orthodoxy with Gothic chanting and clever interplay. It’s catchy, with the whirring riffs mesmerizing and drawing you into a state of rapture. In short, it’s amazing and likely the best thing you’ll hear all day. FFO: Mourning Dawn, Cult of Fire, Balmog 12/15/15 (W.)

  • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

    Newer shit from Detroit.

    https://isenblast666.bandcamp.com/

    • ┼yree

Great band! Unleashing The Demon Scourge is also a great. It’s a bit more grittier than the newer material. Mean shit for sure.

      • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Yeah totally. All their shit is good!

  • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

The new Dr. Shrinker is out. Killer.

    • ┼yree

I’m going to have to check that out. That song you posted a while back was really nasty sounding. Reminded me of Impetigo.

  • ┼yree

Goddamn that Dakhma song is menacing as fuck. Getting a Impetuous Ritual vibe.

    https://soundcloud.com/iron-bonehead-productions/dakhma-libation-unto-the-blessed-flame

    • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

      Damn. Mean.

      • ┼yree

That groove at 1:45 is definitely mean. Nasty.

    • RJA

Iron Bonhead = 90% success rate!

      • ┼yree

        They rarely disappoint me.

    • Lacertilian

All 4 tracks are like that. Wrote a piece about some new IBP stuff you might enjoy last weekend.

      • ┼yree

Hmm, I must have missed that. Is there a link? Or has it not been published yet?

        • Lacertilian

Should be up later this week, I think.

  • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

If anything needed a part 2.

    • ┼yree

      80’s movies saxophone scores >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  • Spear

As I told Dubya earlier, Batushka is exactly what I wish Sarpanitum sounded like. Don’t skip that one.

    • Boss the Ross

I’ve been noticing people getting on Bandcamp, the cover art is what grabbed me. Will definitely be checking it out now.

    • You wish a tech death record sounded like black metal?
      ಠ_ಠ

      • Spear

I didn’t really care for the writing on Blessed. Litourgiya feels very similar in tone and concept, but delivered in a way that’s more palatable to me.

        • LIke in terms of riffcraft or a more ritualistic approach songwriting?

      • Spear

Let me put it this way: I don’t automatically like something just because it’s tech death.

        • Nono, that’s JB.

  • 365ChaosRiddenDays

    Batushka rips!

  • definitely gonna check out dat ass…

    • Dubs

I bet it sounds like ass huehuehuehue

      • i lasted about two minutes (juejue). i simply cannot do mid-paced crossover thrash like that

        • Sir Tapir The Based

You lasted two minutes longer than I did.

          • the way we’re talking, it’s like we had sex

          • Sir Tapir The Based

            Ain’t that your wet dream?

  • Guppusmaximus

I know it’s not METUHL and I’ve already pushed these a couple of times already, but, if you want a worthwhile change in your listening patterns then you should check these out:

    FAT – (Living the Dream)

    http://www.abstractlogix.com/xcart/product.php?productid=26326&cat=0&page=1

5 for Trio – Garder La Tension

    {And an older release}

    Ultra High Flamenco – BiPolar

    https://myspace.com/ultrahighflamenco/music/songs

  • Brock Samson

Western Black Metal? Hmmmm, never thought I would see those together

    • BLACKBEARD UNFILTERED

Well we already have southern infused BM

    • Spear

Lacertillian briefly touched on the Volahn part of that split in his review of their last album. It’s pretty cool.

      • Lacertilian

I’m still getting distance out of those 4 tracks.

  • COAL ROLL

    THE END OF YEAR VOID

  • That Octaviagrace is missing an anime intro.

  • ┼yree
  • That Batushka is fucking incredibly incredible. Also Batushka kind of sounds like what my ex’s mom used to call her, but it probably isn’t.

    • Waynecro

You mean “babushka”? That’s what we used to call my mom’s mom.

  • Eliza

Batushka is amazing! They blend all the elements that make up their sound perfectly, finding just the right balance.

  • pïgchop™

If you are a Star Wars fan you probably already know about “The Despecialized Edition” of the original three films…an ‘unofficial’ recreation of the original, unaltered trilogy in high definition. If you have not seen it, perhaps you would like to…?

    lifehacker.com/watch-the-original-star-wars-trilogy-as-it-was-before-g-1747927284

    • Guppusmaximus

Can’t remember the last time I watched the original trilogy. It might be time to revisit it.

    • All should know about this.

    • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Oh fuck is there a new Star Wars out?

      • CyberneticOrganism

I haven’t heard anything about it.

        • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

          Derp Wars.

          • ┼yree

I’d maybe pay to watch that version.

    • Also, someone edited the prequels to take out all the cheeze, and swap out stupid english voices for alien dialects on some of the characters. Seems pretty sweet.

  • COAL ROLL
    • Dubs

Thanks for posting this. You can also nab the CD. Shipping it’s too bad right now thanks to that sale.

    • It seems that 50 złs is $12.61 in freedom money. Pretty good deal on a sweet record!

      • Dubs

        Zzzzzz has his own currency.

      • COAL ROLL

they are now one copy less the 300 press run

        • I am literally too stupid to figure out checkout.

          • Dubs

Did you use Chrome to translate?

          • COAL ROLL

it’s not very UF. Try firefox

          • COAL ROLL

lol there is a field for your SSN

          • hahahahahaha!

          • Dubs

I think it says you get a discount if you make a registered account.

          • COAL ROLL

$37 USD with priority shipping…worth every penny.

          • Dubs

When I crunched the numbers last night, I think you can get the CD + shipping for just around 12 bucks.

          • COAL ROLL

I bought the vinyl and paid for upgraded shipping

      • Stanley
    • This website is a roller coaster ride. I think i bought the cd?

  • ┼yree

If you liked that Black Cilice album from this year and you have a turn table I recommend getting the Old Curses compilation 2 disc vinyl album which includes the almost impossible to find first 8 demo releases: Demo I, Purification Through Sacrifice, Under Satanic Philosophy, Human Poisoning, Portal Of Revelation, Split With Belzebuth, Tomb Of Endless Curses, & Diabolic Sorcery And Unholy Blood . It may be really difficult to find but I was lucky enough to snag one from Arcane Altar’s Bigcartel. Just looked and he is completely sold out. The one I received had a hand written record # and my name written on the inside. Hope you can find it if you are curious to pick one up. It’s definitely worth the cash.

    • RJA

I second this wholeheartedly. Got mine from http://www.erodingwinds.com

      • ┼yree

Oh nice! I have not ordered from this site yet. I’ll have to browse through it sometime here. Thanks.

EDIT: Oh shit, they have Eternum – The Devouring Descent! I may have to get on that one.

        • RJA

Nice, nothing like checking out a new site and thinking “do I really need to place ANOTHER order?”

          • ┼yree

Fuck, no kidding man. Just had to put a shit load of money into my car. New tires and what not.

          • price of tires <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

          • ME GORAK B.C.™

SABERTOOTH KITTY BACK WAY TO RIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • COAL ROLL

aren’t you saving like $100 a week not getting black out drunk every night?

          • ┼yree

Yup. But when you have to spend $850 on car repairs and tires that really doesn’t matter too much.

          • COAL ROLL

at least you’re not cutting into the beer fund. Seems like you’re always fixing your car…maybe time for a new one? Those new Cummins Titans are pretty nice

          • ┼yree

Probably in a couple of years a new car. For now, it’s running just fine. Every 2 times a year something needs fixed.

      • BLACKBEARD UNFILTERED

Im still waiting for them to ship my newest order. Were they timely with your last one?

        • RJA

They are hit or miss for sure. I’m waiting on one also, does yours contain the yellow eyes or krallice records? because I don’t think they have those in hand yet.

          • ┼yree

I hate that, don’t post an album on your site unless you fucking have it.

          • BLACKBEARD UNFILTERED

No, pale chalice and they had atlas moth in stock so i grabbed them

      • sweetooth0

Agh! It’s still on there, but my budget is so very tight. Damn x-mas bullshit.

        • sweetooth0

fuck it, I’ll figure something out.

          • ┼yree

            Good man!

          • sweetooth0

Purchased. Couldn’t resist having my own personalized raw black metal double LP

          • ┼yree

It’s really awesome! It’s a lot of harsh noise to take all at once though.

          • sweetooth0

I sat through a 2hour Merzbow set live in person. I am up to the challenge.

          • ┼yree

It’s worth it! I may spin it again tonight now that I’ve talked this up.

          • RJA

With some of this obscure stuff you only get so many opportunities to buy in the first place! Some of the demo’s on this collection were limited to like 33 copies.

          • ┼yree

It’s like a lot of that Vlad Tepes shit from back in the day. It’s near impossible to find any of those originals.

          • Stanley

            Too raw for me.

          • ┼yree

That’s completely understandable. I’m finding that I am really enjoying more of the harsher side of black metal now. Some of it is straight up noise and I absolutely love it. Just straight up audial terror.

      • Stanley

What is this bullshit? “Limited to an undisclosed amount.”

Eroding Winds and Fallen Empire are so guilty of all this vinyl nonsense. I’ve bought lots of stuff from both places, but this stuff gets on my nerves.

        • ┼yree

          I think I got #27

        • RJA

I’m mostly on board with you man. But I buy most of it so…

I don’t care when they do a limited color run, but it drives me nuts when the runs as a whole are so limited. Re: Misþyrming.
I mean, should it be that hard for me to get a copy of a record I want?!

  • Janitor Jim Duggan

    Stygmata sounds awful.

    • Sir Tapir The Based

Don’t lie. This has JJD written all over it.

      • Janitor Jim Duggan

        I didn’t enjoy it.

  • CyberneticOrganism

Fuck you guys and all this cool new music, I’ve got too much work to do.

  • sweetooth0

    Man that Batushka!!!! This RULES!

    • sweetooth0

Sorta reminds me of Ruins of Beverast, and that is never a bad thing.

    • Dubs

      So good, man.

  • tertius_decimus

    Batushka – Litourgiya

    Твою ж мать.

As native Russian-speaking dude, I strictly refuse to listen to anything that bears the name of something associated with Russian Orthodox Church no matter if such naming is a joke or not. Fuck ROC with 666 fists ov Hell.

    http://rodonews.ru/demotivators/i/full1278697289.jpg

    • Dubs

I’m no mind-reader, but my guess here is that the band, like just about every black metal band, is co-opting the imagery to subvert the orthodoxy.

    • COAL ROLL

so Terts bro…are they a Russian band, not from Poland?

      • tertius_decimus

The band is from Poland, however name is Russian. Same as Brazilian viking metal.

    • Ted Nü-Djent ™

I thought it was just a Kate Bush song

  • Waynecro

Ashen Horde and Batushka kill, man. These revelations shall enable much unhinged jamming. Thanks!

  • Man you disappointed me. Morth is only kinda lolbuttz, and more just boring symphonic black metal.

  • Octaviagrace, however, is lolbuttz. I can’t stand that vibrato thing that all japanese singers use.

  • Air Raid From The Top Bunk

    Ass.
A band whose name is simple and subtle, yet sophisticated.

  • Air Raid From The Top Bunk

It seems Abbath’s band is already jumping ship. The guitarist and drummer both quit over the last few days.

    http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/abbath-loses-guitarist-per-valla/

  • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

What no love for the new Stone Sour? Sheeeeeeeeeeeet

  • Rodrigo Delli

I can be wrong, but there’s any DSBM album in any list… and we have great DSBM albuns this year: “A way of life you can’t understand”, by Rotten Light, just to say one.
At the field of experimental black metal, we have the “Oceanclots’, by Damphyr.
To end, a melodical black metal release very intense: “Carrion”, by Nydeshka.
I think you gave too much attention to the big bands… what about the minor ones?

Ps: If really enjoy Black Cilice, I think you should give a chance do Talv, with his excelent “Üksildus”.

Thank you all for the great job
    A hug from Brazil
