This Toilet Tuesday (12/13/16)

Trying to keep up with new music is painful. Just when you think that it’s starting to slow down and give you some time to clear out your considerable backlog, Grafvitnir and Teitanblood decide to drop new albums in the same week. Plus, you’ve come across a handful of bands you’ve never heard of that have some awesome songs out, and your backlog just got that much bigger. You may never catch up, but at least you’re in good company; W. and I have picked out a couple of the choicest cuts to save you some time. Let us know what else we need to hear, that we may all suffer in solidarity.

Murg – Gudatall (Nordvis) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Mästarens resa i mörkret”

Judging by the one track available on Bandcamp, Murg’s Gudatall is going to be quite the suffocating release. I especially like the way that the rhythm and lead guitars in “Mästarens resa i mörkret” are off-sync, inducing vertigo in the listener while the parched croaks beckon you to oblivion. Keep your eye on this one. 12/16/16 (W.)

Æðra – Perseiderna (Naturmacht Productions) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Svartån”

If you’re at all familiar with Naturmacht Productions’ roster of artists, then you already have a pretty good idea of what to expect from Æðra; atmospheric black metal that, while somewhat familiar, is undeniably soulful and well-crafted. Æðra differentiate themselves by taking a progressive turn in the vein of bands such as Woman Is The Earth or Oak Pantheon, as well as tasteful use of downtuned guitars and some brief guttural vocals. Add in some gorgeous clean guitars and Perseiderna becomes a must-have for fans of the genre. 12/17/16 (Spear)

I probably would have blurbed that Teitanblood had there been anything on Bandcamp the other day. I think there’s a video going around, though…

    • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Methinks it’s fully available rn too, on BofC.

      • Space Monster W.

You’re right! It is up now. It wasn’t on Sunday(?) when I last looked.

        • Spear

It must have just gone up. I checked it again this morning as I was finishing up the post, and there still wasn’t anything there.

      • BofC? Is that like BOFA?

  • Señor Jefe El Rosa

    Mega Colossus is really good!

I am inclined to check out Raven Lord and most certainly Witchtower – Hammer of Witches, because witches.

  • “Dork Portrait”

I was unreasonably excited that a band would name themselves this, then realized you were just mocking them. 5/7

    • Spear

“A Harrowing Atrocity” is certainly the most apt title they could have chosen for that album.

      • that bad?

        • Spear

They made the mistake of putting all the lyrics up on their Bandcamp page, and they truly drag it down to gutter-tier.

          • Joaquin Stick

“Hark my wrath; I saw them pray through the opaque glass by sacrificing a lamb”

          • Joaquin Stick

“Cold air scratched ten black swans and
Before the dusk the mermaids sang”

          • Spear

            “6 1 6
Nemesis does not exist for me
            I won’t sleep
I saw Mora in the mist”

          • Space Monster W.

Back in the old country, we used black swans as a primary mode of transportation to cross Tiberius Lake to deliver live chickens to the chicken monger. Papa would wake up before dawn, go out to the brook with a sack full of mana that he gathered the night before from the fields, and spread it around in the morning dew. When the black swans would come flying down from roosting in the harrier’s barn, Papa would use his lash made from dried donkey scrotum skin to bind snare the black swans into a train. Then he would cinch them to an old pumpkin husk and have them draw him across the water.

          • Óðinn

That’s pretty much what I assumed.

          • Space Monster W.

            As is tradition.

          • Spear

            “Ode…to…scorn… that’s only I want”

Also: There’s a new interview with the band over at Bardo Methodology. It was interesting to learn the intense connection/inspiration the band has with Timo Ketola. Ketola and his artwork are pretty much a fixture in the NoEvDia sphere, so it makes sense. But it was interesting to learn that Seven Chalices was completely inspired by one of Ketola’s zines! Great stuff.

The Bardo Methodology dude is the best interviewer in the game right now. Thoroughly enjoy his interviews:

Kramer: Yeah, karate. I had no support. Not from him, not from Newman, no one. The first time I sparred with an opponent, I was terrified. My legs, they were like noodles. But then I looked inside, and I found my katra.

        Elaine: Katra?

Kramer: Yeah, your spirit, your, uh, being. The part of you that says, “Yes, I can!”

        Jerry: Sammy Davis had it.

    • GoatForest

Between this and Deathspell’s new album, it seems that Norma Evangelium Diaboli is getting busy again. Maybe we’ll get another Funeral Mist album…

      • Howard Dean

DsO, Antaeus, and Teitanblood in a two month stretch. Never expected that. Would love to see new Funeral Mist or Katharsis (very doubtful on the latter), though I’m almost willing to bet that the next thing we see from NoEvDia is something new from Sorhin. I’m just hoping there isn’t a long period of silence after this recent barrage (like there was from basically the second half of 2014 to now).

  • Grafvitnir is a good.
    Black Cilice is a good.
December needs to just stop it already.

    • Señor Jefe El Rosa

      You need to stop it.

      • I need to stop you.

        • Señor Jefe El Rosa

How are you going to do that with no arms? Huh?!

          • Post good metal on your FB page until you wilt and die.

          • Señor Jefe El Rosa

Your taste in “metal” is inferior to mine.

          • Your taste in “metal” is actually just taste in “rock”.

          • Señor Jefe El Rosa

At least I can tap my toe and bang my head to the metal I listen to, you can’t do anything with that stuff you call “music” except go into convulsions.

          • Well, yes. Isn’t that the point?

          • Señor Jefe El Rosa

No. That is not the point.

          • Makes the time go by quickly.

          • Space Monster W.

This is what’s colloquially known as a “headshot.”

          • Richtoid doesn’t listen to metal tho

          • Señor Jefe El Rosa

He sure tries to write about it though

          • you call THAT metal? 😉

          • YOU WAN’T IN ON THIS FIGHT JIMMAH?!?!?!?!

          • yeah, i do. in fact, i already cut off both my arms!

          • Oooof.

Aeora (I’m out of coffee today and have NO time to figure out how to type it correctly) is most definitely a fucking JAM! Really well crafted riffs and the production is nice. Guitars are clean and tight! Yep!
