This Toilet Tuesday (11/8/16)

Welcome once again to This Toilet Tuesday! I have returned from my brief hiatus a happier and better-adjusted man, so let’s not waste any time in bringing that back down to normal levels. This week’s offerings are particularly harrowing, with the likes of Deathspell Omega and Downfall of Gaia lurking in the shadows. W, Lacertilian, and I have picked out a few that may have gone unnoticed otherwise, so jam these before hitting that list.

akasava

Akasava – Nothing at Dawn (Triton’s Orbit) [Doom]
Listen to “The Devil’s Tide”

If you like riffs, Akasava have your back like a buttcrack. The vocals may be a deterrent to some of you, but the power of that hard-rockin’, Sabbathian main riff in “The Devil’s Tide” compels you. Just find some spacegrass, lay low, and yet the universe expand. FFO: Mothership, Clutch, Red Fang 11/11/16 (W.)

ellende

Ellende – Todbringer (Talheim Records) [Black Metal]
Listen

When I first hit play on “Ballade auf den Tod,” the opening synth notes led me to believe I was in for a Summoning/Caladan Brood-style outpouring of high fantasy nerdery, but such is largely not the case. While there is a healthy amount of that slow, epic, brooding feel to it, but Ellende aren’t afraid to inject a few bursts of speed into the mix. Todbringer is massive and sorrowful; jam this one and maybe that sad skeleton on the cover will feel just a little better. 11/7/16 (Spear)

asteroid-iii-digital-cover-web

Asteroid – III (Fuzzorama Records) [Fuzz-Heavy Retro Stoner Rock]
Listen to “Last Days”

Continuing down the path they’ve been merrily treading since the mid-2000’s, rollicking Swedish stoner trio Asteroid are back with their third full-length fuzz-fest. After two excellent albums, the material on III continues in a quite a similar fashion, however there are some more introspective sounding moments interspersed throughout the prevailing sky-gazing wonderment. While the band have ostensibly been affiliated with space throughout their career, the nature of their organic riffing and relatively gritty vocals clearly shows that while they may have stars in their eyes, the soil remains deeply ingrained in their style hiking boots. FFO: Horisont, Graveyard, Brutus, the 70’s. 11/11/16 (Lacertilian)

I didn’t write about them because to err is human, to disappoint – bear. But:

    • I liked that part near the end. It really seem to drive the point home 🙂

  • CyberneticOrganism
    • Got that shit pre-ordered. Ready!

      • I was re-listening to their 2006 effort Come Clarity yesterday… damn is it a good one!

        • D00d, check out Lisa Miskovsky’s solo material too (she did guest vox on that one track)

          • I certainly have done that in the past, shes a good.

          • Sorry man, I’m a broken rekkid

      • Kevin Nash’s Jackknife

        I’m not excited for it

        • Not all of us are perfect, JJD. It is OK.

  • That Ravencult artwork is whoa-boy!

  • Howard Dean

After a week spinning The Synarchy of Molten Bones, I can safely say that it is a great addition to the band’s already stellar discography. Well worth that ugly mother of a wait! I’ve had some seriously sinister riffs from it stuck in my head for days now (that sleek little snake of a riff near the end of the title track being the most un-lodge-able). Store dread in your head!

A wholly ferocious and “hideous” album (very apt descriptor, Herr Spear). Brutal on the ear and mind. Probably a good thing that it’s only 29 minutes.

    • Óðinn

Shit! I haven’t heard it yet. I’ve been slacking. Glad to know it’s good though.

  • Eliza

The sexy sax is a really sexy sax.

  • Wuuuut, new Dark Lunacy? I need to check that one! :O

Overall, it was a great week for me! New Dark Tranquillity is exactly what I wanted. I’m also so stoked to hear Trees of Eternity, Saor and Vomitron (yeaah, it have some Castlevania!).

    Great job, guyzzz.

    • Eliza

I’m listening to Saor right now. It’s good.

  • RustyShackleford

    Nintendo metal?! SWEET lol. Yep.

    • It actually didn’t sound all that terrible!

    • I dig. Instead of going full shreddy, like always, they still use some chiptunes synths.

      • RustyShackleford

I agree. I’m a sucker for that shit!

  • Simon PhoenixKing Rising

That Barbarian Swords sounded nothing like their band name would suggest. I think I digs it though.

  • Lets play Would You Rather™…
Would you rather: listen to the new Deathspell Omega on repeat for six hours OR listen to the new In Flames on repeat for six hours? Go!

    • I’d rather die. Thanks!

    • Scrimm

        ¡Jajajaja!

        • Kevin Nash’s Jackknife

          I wasn’t excited for it.

    • Eliza

Listening to any album on repeat for six hours sounds insane to me, no matter what the album in question is, but in this case I think I’d prefer Deathspell Omega, because at least I enjoy their music.

      • Señor Jefe El Rosa

I could listen to INTO GLORY RIDE for 6 hours and have no problem

        • Eliza

          That’s a special case.

          • emphasis on the “special”

      • Jack Rabbit

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OZq2cactvc
Will only have to listen to this album twice in that time

        • Eliza

Can’t say this isn’t worthy of its title.

          • Jack Rabbit

I don’t listen to much jazz, but this album kills. Just gotta listen to it in parts, cuz most don’t have the time to sit through this thing

        • Count_Breznak
          • Dumpster Lung ᴰᵃᵐᵃᵍᵉ_ᴵⁿᶜ⁸⁹

That is just nuts. Been Googling this, and they apparently recorded the whole thing live for 14 hours straight, and the only breaks were when they specifically planned for just a couple of them playing so the ones whose instruments weren’t used could get up and pee or eat food. Then they edited it down to 11-ish to cut out some of the harsher feedback that went on too long, (according to a forum post I found by one of the guys).

            http://www.doom-metal.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=7861&sid=04dbac8b1c8c9bcaa836bd4454c2fc8e&start=0

(Seems like a pretty pretentious forum lol)

    • Howard Dean

      …or

c.) Listen to the new DsO for six eons of metaphysical torment as the amoral demiurge shreds your feeble flesh coffin.

      • Eliza

        That sounds like fun!

    • Scrimm

I’ll just listen to Nespithe again thanks

    • King Shit of Fuck Mountain
      • Scrimm

I did that a few months ago

        • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

          That sounds terrible.

          • Scrimm

I was in an altered state of mind the whole time so I made it.

          • Scrimm was tripping balls, thinking it was some alien that was asking him philosophical questions… And it was Mañulti talking about the malandros of St. Louis!

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

            That would probably help.

          • Scrimm

Plus I may have forced him to listen to all our shitty music so I guess that made us even.

          • Señor Jefe El Rosa

            Not shitty!

  • JWEG

Does a rerecorded debut album really count as a New Release, though…

Asking because this is actually the second time Arkona have re-recorded Vozr-whatever, and I’m pretty sure third rerelease in total too.

    • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Well it’s a new album, despite the lack of new original material – similarly to as an album featuring acoustic renditions of old songs would be new.

  • Man, not looking like much other than DsO for me this week. Maybe that Ellende too.

    EDIT: AND NEW SAOR. FUCK.

    • Eliza

      Ellende’s cool.

      • Duly noted 👌

But if it isn’t I’m totally holding it against you.

        • Eliza

It has to be. It has a skeleton on the cover.

  • Jack Rabbit

Riffs were cool in Akasava, but the vocals kinda killed it for me pretty fast

    • Señor Jefe El Rosa

      Yeahhhhh, bit of a letdown

      VEEEEEEEKTOOOOOOOORRR!

  • AeonsOvChaos

What about some first wave Black Metal mixed with some old school Thrash, dear fiends, try to give it a spin, Obscure Evil knows how important the riffs are, seems infectious, a track called “Black Metal Storm” is at Caligar’s bandcamp, and if you like it, you can listen to their new EP “Void Fumes” in full at Decibel: http://caligarirecords.bandcamp.com/album/void-fumes

I like the violin in that Dark Lunacy song, and The Ritual Aura album is going to be killer (despite the sort of doofy album-cover art). Vomitron is pretty super as well.
