I live once again, returning from beyond the black with a horde of malevolent, feral new music! And, uh, an unusual amount of flowery power metal. Wherever your tastes may lie, be it dark and brooding or glorious and triumphant, you’re sure to find something to enjoy here. Check out our picks and let us know what else we need to hear in the comments.

Old Crucifix – Demon’s Curse (Independent) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Demon’s Curse,” “Howling Sacrifice”

“Make Blackened Thrash fun again,” said Hellripper earlier this year, and Old Crucifix replied, “For sure, but keep that shit grim and pissed off,” and so, here we are. Less tongue-in-cheek sleaze and playfulness, but just as much verve when it comes to dishing out absolutely banging, fast riffs. A somewhat more deranged vocalist adds to the impression that a drunken horde was having at it in some mouldy-ass rehearsal room with beer cans strewn all about, but don’t expect sloppy playing. Nay, everything is kept on a tight leash, so their unwholesome intent comes across quite clearly. 11/11/17 (Hans)

Desolate Shrine – Deliverance from the Godless Void (Dark Descent Records) [Death Metal]
Listen to “The Primordial One,” “The Waters of Man”

It should come as a surprise to absolutely no one that another quality death metal album has emerged from the murky waters of Dark Descent, especially when the name Desolate Shrine is attached. Pulsing dissonance and meaty riffs are traded in equal measure, with some tastefully reverb’d vocals and great sounding drums. The two preview tracks don’t really contain any surprises, but when they’re this good, they don’t really need to. 11/10/17 (Spear)

I need to check out that Perihelion album… and need to write something about the new Witchery too.

Also, first impressions of the new Morbid Angel album are surprisingly good!

    • Brutalist_Receptacle

      Bassza meg!!

  • Brutalist_Receptacle

    Came for the Ah Ciliz.
Stayed to laugh at Elvenking singer.

  • I haven’t heard a WHOLE lot of buzz about Converge’s new album, not on here anyway, but holy sweet Jesus fuck is it ever good. The blasty bits, the fast metallic hardcore bits, the melodic bits, it’s one of their best for sure.

    • Brutalist_Receptacle

      THEY SHOULD CALL IT “ROUND-TINE.”

    • Joaquin Stick

I have forgotten to check that out like 6 times in the last few days. Listening now, sounds good to me!

    • themaleshoegaze

It is brilliant and, I think, more than a return to (consistently super-good) form. I’m, at the moment, seeing it close to, if not equally good as ‘You fail me’, which is a huge compliment coming from me.* I’ll gladly go into detail about this opinion.

*Houserule: Jane Doe is always the best Converge album.

      • Brutalist_Receptacle

EXCEPT WHEN IT IS ENTITLED ALL WE LOVE WE LEAVE BEHIND

        • themaleshoegaze

I gather that a few people see it that way, and I kind of see their point (but only kind of) and I would never even remotely begin to think of dissing an album as magnificent as AWLWLB, but style preferences, biographical bias and the incredible monument that Jane Doe is make it so that I dig it more, and, oh, EXCUSE ME, I FORGOT TO YELL JUST NOW!!!

          • Brutalist_Receptacle

            I LOVE YOU THEMALESHOEGAZE, MAN.

          • themaleshoegaze

            I LOVE LAMP VASE, MAN.

    • The Tetrachord of Archytas

I’m loving it too. Kurt Ballou always nails that sound too where everything is chaotic but also somehow super clear

  • Howard Dean

Saw on Book o’ Faces this a.m. that Tribulation announced their new album “Down Below” will be released in January and that they are also releasing an EP in December called “Lady Death.” Super excited for these two. The Children of the Night might’ve been my favorite thing released in 2015. [excitement emoji]

    • anesthesiac

Check out the Cloak album that comes out this week too. I know the Season of Mist tag will garner a few spins with toileteers, but they deserve a mention down here too. They can almost fill that Tribulation shaped void in my stoney heart.

    • PostBlackenedWhaleGaze

Pre-ordered the EP when they announced it. Can’t wait for that and the new album. Children of the Night still blows my mind.

  • Howard Dean

Funeral Hearse, huh? As opposed to all of those non-funeral-related hearses?

  • Rick Chard

Electric Wizard announced their album is delayed until next week FWIW.

    • Howard Dean

I think they should delay it indefinitely so that they can get some new cover art and make certain it doesn’t sound like the last album.

      • Dubby Fresh

A stoner band not repeating themselves? You ask too much.

        • Howard Dean

They could write 15 more albums like Come My Fanatics or Dopethrone and I’d be pumped. Time to Die was by far their worst effort to date. Most of the post-Let Us Prey stuff has been meh (Witchcult Today is the exception), but the last album was really boring. Something really went awry on that one.

          • Lord of Bork

I thought their last few were pretty damn good, myself. Sure it’s not quite the quality of their peak era, but what is? Still an enjoyable listen.

  • Janitor Jim Duggan

    Yay, Pink Cream 69!

    • Howard Dean

Sounds like a porno mag c. 1976 you’d find in your uncle’s basement.

      • Janitor Jim Duggan

        They’re a surprisingly good band.

  • God

Just ordered the new Witchery. Heard true north and it’s an absolute banger!

  • tigeraid

Woah! Vhäldemar has a record out! I didn’t know, but I really enjoyed their little EP from earlier this year. Listening for sure.

    • Spear

Everything on the EP is on the new album too

  • HessianHunter

    Antigama is some dope grindmetal

  • Hans

Those Amberian Dawn tracks look great juxtapposed like that.

  • GrumpDumpus

HOW DO YOU YOUNG WHIPPER SNAPPERS MAINTAIN ENTHUSIASM FOR A WHOLE YEAR I’M BARELY CLAWING FORWARD JUST FAR ENOUGH TO GET THE NEW LUGUBRUM AND TUMOR NECROSIS FACTOR ALPHA AND THEN I WILL TAP OUT UNTIL NEXT YEAR AND COLLAPSE ON THE VINYL I’M STILL CATCHING UP ON

    • God

Luckily I’m in a trade where I’m given a task at the start of the day, and then work uninterrupted for the next 8 hours. That’s the ONLY way I’m able to listen to almost everything that comes out in a year. It’s overwhelming.

  • Primordial Chaos

The new album by Desolate Shrine is magnificent, murky atmosphere with some dissonance makes their music truly dark, not an easy listening but an experience worth of our time, some moments could remind you “Deathspell Omega” but the good thing is their capacity to give a contemplated violence to the songs, perfectly mixed with harrowing screams and blasts like the opener or the ferocious onslaught of “Unmask the Face of False” to name a few, pure finnish Death Metal rage but more back metal oriented without losing their grit at all, another excellent strike for these finnish fiends.

    • Morbidly Obese Angel

I actually found it to be a chore to listen too. Yes, it might be dissonant, atmospheric and dark but it sounds to me like they’ve completely abandoned the notion of good hooks, composition or listenability in favour of murky atmosphere – which I would add should be complementary to a sound rather than the focal point. Just my 2 cents.

      • Primordial Chaos

Yes, speaking about being more focused on the hooks you remind me their albums in “Tenebrous Towers” and “The Sanctum of Human Darkness” in which they have found their best spot in my opinion, after all, the new one maybe needs more time to be appreciated but sincerely I can’t say that is bad, I have to hear it more carefully than I did until now to absorb the complexity of the songs.

  • WhamBamSam

Euphoria – The Omega Void (Evil Eye Records) [Thrash]. Their debut was one of my favorite records from last year, so I’ve been pretty excited for this, even if it is just an EP. Comes out this Saturday at least on digital platforms if the band’s Facebook is to be believed, though the physical release from the label doesn’t ship for another week.

  • Nukenado

    Astroschwein by Porky Vagina.
No, I’m not joking, that is a real band.
They sound like Igorrr and Anaal Nathrakh’s bastard son being raised by Diablo Swing Orchestra while watching too much hentai.

    • Nukenado

Oh, Pyres by Kroh is also pretty good.

  • Cody Luebbers

    Entheos…
