This Toilet Tuesday (1/13/15)

Hello, fellow citizens of the crapper, and welcome to Toilet Tuesday! There’s new music aplenty this week and I’m tapped for poop metaphors right now, so I’ll let you get right to it. Jack Bauer, Leif Bearikson, W, and I have listed our favorites below. Enjoy!

Sylosis – Dormant Heart (Nuclear Blast) [Thrash]

It’s no secret how much I love Sylosis. They are one of the best at combining death and thrash and at the same time giving it a sound all their own. They excel at writing super tasty riffs. Monolith was a phenomenal record and Dormant Heart is just as good if not better. (Jack Bauer)

unborn generation

Unborn Generation – Dead Generation of Men (Independent) [Grindcore]
Listen to “In the Corner”

These guys write some tasty grind. Kind of reminds me of Kataplexis with less raspy vocals. Good shit. (Jack Bauer)

Ghoulgotha – The Deathmass Cloak (Dark Descent) [Death/Doom]
Listen to “Austere Urns”

Following up on their massive 2014, Dark Descent is firing its first salvo of the new year with the bugged out, constantly shifting death/doom of Ghoulgotha. The sound of The Deathmass Cloak is akin to your favorite OSDM band being warped and mutilated like every tertiary character ever presented in a Hellraiser movie. I hope you enjoy it, because you’re going to be seeing Ghoulgotha quite a bit. According to the band, on top of their debut they are also releasing a new MLP late this year, a handful of splits, and already have their next record written and ready for 2016. Prepare yourself for the onslaught by listening above. (Leif Bearikson)

Nebelfront – Only in my Dreams (Cursed Productions) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Kalt,” “Somewhere”

Imagine, if you will, depressive black metal as played by a band of Vikings. Now image that you’re hearing that played through some muddy speakers. What you should be picturing is Nebelfront. Combining raw, buzzing riffs with folk melodies and a somber tone, they bring the melancholy, and they bring it hard. Interestingly, some of the riffs even remind me a bit of doom metal, harkening back to stalwarts Doomsword. Promo track “Kalt” sends your emotions plummeting to rock bottom midway through the song before building to a grandiose revisit of the main riff. This is beautiful and agonizing stuff. FFO: Lifelover, early Primordial, Doomsword (W.)

desolate shrine

Desolate Shrine – The Heart of the Netherworld (Dark Descent) [Blackened Death]
Listen to “Black Fires of God”

Desolate Shrine are here to shatter your places of worship. These blackened death sadists start “Black Fires of God” off with a tumultuous bang, and the meteoric riffs begin raining down on your heads like the vengeful fury of an angry deity. Vocals cycle between demoniac snarls and twisted shrieks, but the aggression never lets up. This song slays. FFO: Blood of Kingu, Keep of Kalessin, Lightning Swords of Death (W.)

orden ogan

Orden Ogan – Ravenhead (AFM Records) [Power Metal]
Listen to “F.E.V.E.R.”

I suspect that the video for “F.E.V.E.R.” happened because the band got lost on their way to a Kalmah video shoot and are now permanently stuck in a swamp somewhere. The swamp madness seems to have had an effect on their music as well; “F.E.V.E.R.” wouldn’t sound entirely out of place on a Kalmah record with it’s triumphant, galloping riffs and furious lead guitar. Orden Ogan really distinguish themselves with the vocals, between the singer’s kinda raspy, kinda growly tenor and the massive choruses. Ravenhead looks to be an early favorite of 2015 for me. (Spear)

Alpha Tiger – iDentity (SPV/Steamhammer) [Heavy Metal]

Antiquus Scriptum/Krigere Wolf/Waldschrat/Notre Amertume – The Beginning of the End (split- Fallen Angels Productions) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Supreme Energy of the Universe” (Krigere Wolf), “Wer Wind sät…” (Waldschrat)

Angra – The Secret Garden (earMusic) [Power Metal]
Listen to “Newborn Me”, “Storm of Emotions”

Armageddon – Captivity & Devourment (Listenable Records) [Death Metal]
Listen to “Captivity & Devourment”

Begrime Exemious/Flash Out – Begrime Exemious/Flash Out (split- Filth Regime) [Black Metal]

Cannabies – Sativa Syn (Brutal Mind) [Brutal Death]
Listen to “Sativa Syn”

Chalice of Blood – Helig, Helig, Helig (Daemon Worship) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Nightside Serpent,” “Shemot”

Chapel of Disease – The Mysterious Ways of Repetitive Art (FDA Rekotz) [Death Metal]
Stream (Ends Jan. 16)

Cold Snap – World War 3 (Eclipse Records) [lolbuttz]
Listen to “Silent Killer”

The Crown – Death is Not Dead (Century Media) [Death Metal]
Listen to “Speed Kills”

Cruadalach – Rebel Against Me (MetalGate Records) [Folk Metal]
Listen to “Shiva World Dance Party”

Demented Heart – Different Infinite Equations (CD release- Sickness Productions) [Tech Death]
Listen to “Different Infinite Equations”

Doomraiser – Reverse (Passaggio Inverso) (Bloodrock Records) [Doom]

Enforcation – Pits ov Fire and Torment (Independent) [Death Metal]

Eternal Wisdom – Pathei Mathos (OTOW) [Black Metal]

Exquisite Ending – The Rite of Misanthropism Psalms I to IV (Hibernacula Records) [Black Metal]
Listen to “Psalm II: The Mass Congregation of Detestable Despair”

Heimdallr – Молния (Narcoleptica Productions) [Black Metal]

Infra – Initiation on the Ordeals of Lower Vibrations (Nuclear War Now!) [Blackened Death]
Listen to “Communion”

Ingested – Architect of Extinction (Century Media) [Slamming Brutal Death]
Listen to “The Divine Right of Kings”

Insanity Reigns Supreme – Unorthodox (Shiver Records) [Death Metal]
Listen to “Ov Fire”

Kenn Nardi – Dancing with the Past (Tribunal/Divebomb Records) [Prog Metal]

The Last Ten Seconds of Life – Soulless Hymns (Density Records) [Hardcore]
Listen to “North of Corpus”

Maléfices – Hurlemort (Final Agony) [Black Metal]

  • I’ve been pumped about Desolate Shrine for some time. Commence the shattering!

    • Tyree

Goddamn, this band is so fucking menacing.

    • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

      This is pretty tasty.

    • way better in the comments section than from the link in the article 😉

      • DDubya.

I guess y’all needed to hear it twice.

    • Renan Ribeiro

Song name alone gets me pretty pumped

    • Stanley

      Where is the solo?

      • Tyree

        Right here dude.

      • i was thinking the same thing. there are so many great black-ish bands that seem to skip the solos (Sinmara is a major offender). guitar solos just break up the music, y’know!

        • Stanley

Do you think that it’s an intentional artistic decision or do you think it’s symptomatic of the level of talent on display?

          • i think it’s part rebellion of the old school gimmick of soloing (i.e. Van Halen) and part don’t know how to write solos that truly fit the style.

          • Stanley

It’ll be interesting to see if anyone puts forth a black metal solo for this week’s solo of the week. ToH moderators – here’s an idea for a future solo of the week.

          • (i actually did… just keep it on the D/L ok?)

    • sweetooth0

      This shit is sweeeeeeeet!

    • Tyree

Mastorlord, I just realized that this band has two vocalists and one person that recorded all the instruments for this album. Pretty cool!

      • Edward #negrodMMXV

… kinda like Cobalt but Cobalt has / had one vocalist and one multi-instrumentalist.

        • Tyree

Yeah, I respect anyone that can write and play every instrument on an album. There are some fucking talented musicians out there.

          • Edward #negrodMMXV

            Erik Wunder can sing too.

            Erik Wunder >>>>>>>>>>

… plus all of the one man projects where dudes play everything and sing, and some of them mix and master those fuckers!

          • Tyree

I’m curious to hear this new Cobalt album with just Erik. I bet it will be pretty damn good.

Edit: I’m sure he’ll have help, but still…

          • Edward #negrodMMXV

I can’t wait to hear that shit either. I hope it’s even better and he tops Gin!

          • Tyree

2015 is already insane! So much shit out already and so much greatness to look forward too.

          • Edward #negrodMMXV

If Psalm Zero drops their new record this year on Profound Lore Records I might just die.

          • old_man_doom

The new Cobalt is fertile ground for all kinds of guest appearances. Stoked to the max.

          • DDubya.

          • Edward #negrodMMXV

One man everything and the mix and the master?

          • Scrimm

I do too. I’m trying to work on a one man project myself.

  • Janitor Jim Dvggan

I loved the new Sylosis album. Listened to the stream yesterday. Also, the new Turnstile album comes out today. I’m excited for that.

  • I’ve been using RYM to keep up with new music, but it doesn’t help me at all, since I’ve heard of like 2 of these bands.

  • Edward #negrodMMXV

Nice to see Jack Bauer amongst the Toilet Tuesday ranks.

  • Tyree

Checked out that Desolate Shrine’s last night thanks to The Masterlord; Incredible shit! Jack, Unborn Generation is sick as fuck! Finland is a breeding ground for some of the thickest and grittiest sounding grindcore.

  • All the power metal people are all like OH MAN I LOVE ORDEN OGAN all the time and I’m over here like “okay.”

    Shine on warriors

  • zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
  • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Been a little while since I’ve had this many to look forward to. Going to see ghoulgotha in apr

  • D. Lee

My sylosis pre-order decided not to ship till day of release. My jimmies are rustled.

    • Further Down the Metal Hole

I have the same sad feels coming out of my identical situation.

  • Nordling Rites ov Kahlua

Never heard of Unborn Generation, I love them now. There is no way this band is not Finnish tho.

    • The Bestest Tapir

I believe they are from Jyväskylä. I dig them as well.

    • Tyree

I know right. Rotten Sound worship anyone?

      • Nordling Rites ov Kahlua

I was actually referring to an alcoholic beverage seen in the video. But now that you mention it, they sound veryvery much like RT, nothing wrong with it.

        • Tyree

Oh, haha! I wasn’t paying much attention to the video.

      • thank you! i couldn’t put my finger on it.

    • Never heard of them either, they’ve got all the musical elements I love – buzzsaw guitars and blast beats! I can fuck with this.

  • HessianHunter

Nervously excited to jam Sylosis: I had mixed feelings about Monolith but so far Dormant Heart is the jam

    • Renan Ribeiro

My thoughts exactly. It felt similar to Revocation’s last album, never really got into their earlier stuff but jammed the shit out of Deathless.

      • Lacertilian

No-one can miss the Teratogenesis EP.

  • It’s as if Orden Ogan was asking for a Video Breakdown.

    • oh man, and that Cold Snap

    • Stanley

I wouldn’t want to be their drum tech on this video shoot.

    • I’m wondering how her dress is staying so pearly white if she’s been in that swamp all that time. Her dry cleaning bill’s gotta be sky fucking high!

  • Nordling Rites ov Kahlua

Okay, Nebelfront, Desolate Shrine and Orden Ogan seem really good too on a quick glance.

  • HOly shit this desolate shrine is great.

    • “FFO Lightning Swords of Death”… present and accounted-for!

      Yep I’m sold

    • Scrimm

The last album was really good too.

      • Stop that, I’m trying to save money here man.

        • Edward #negrodMMXV

          Lol good luck.

        • Scrimm

Lol sorry I’m going crazy cause I can’t buy anything.

          • just use the box of rocks until you are no longer in a crunch!

          • Scrimm

In a way it’s kinda cool cause I’m working way more on my own music instead of listening all the time. Frustrating though, haven’t got one call for an interview yet.

  • Renan Ribeiro

Measles is down, 4 more to go if the Toilet allows me

  • Tyree

    • The Bestest Tapir

      I NEED DIS!

    • heh, and I thought I was gonna save money this week.

      Edit: oh january 26, phew

    • track 2, “Nuns, Cunts & Darkness” … i can get behind a title like that!

  • Renan Ribeiro

I really like Death/Doom. Excited to check out this Ghoulgothoshjoad release

    • this Ghouldfjfahsdfiofsio was my #PickOfToiletTuesday, along with new Armageddon… And, it’s #Approved! Sick crunchy guitar..

  • Ghoulgotha? Did Crypt Keeper from Tales From the Crypt name this band?

  • Stanley

How the fuck have you lot listened to all this music already? It’s only 8:15. Jesus Christ!

  • Guacamole Jim

Oh man, this week’s lolbuttz is a like a worse Slipknot. I lol’d not so much, but died a little inside.

  • Stanley

That Orden Ogan song fits perfectly in my guilty pleasure category. The cheese quotient is off the charts (with the video adding an additional sprinkling) but those razor sharp riffs cannot be denied.

  • I’m very happy that new Armageddon (Swe) it’s out!! I want to hear it full!!!

    • It’s pretty sweet.

      • the bassist is great, I love her bass’ crunchy distorted tone.. I love Chris Amott solo work (the rock albums) and all the songs they leaked, in my opinion, where very tasty.. It got some great hooks in the compositions of the songs.

    • yup. no disrespect to the man who likes Arch Enemy… but i’d trade all new AE for new Armageddon!

      • *military hand sign* Yesss, ssir!… I think their work was more adventurous than Arch Enemy last record, for sure! I’m very happy that Chris Amott is exploring new compositions out of the safe zone

      • Edward #negrodMMXV

I’d trade it all away for a soon-ish follow up to Gorguts Colored Sands.

        • Mr. Ed.. Can I tell you something? 🙂

          • Edward #negrodMMXV

          • I liked Artificial Brain. First time I like some dissonant material.

          • Edward #negrodMMXV

            OH SHIT. OH SHIT LINK.

            Artificial Brain >>>>>>>>>

            Will Smith >>>>>>>>>

          • Very good material, very concise album and it’s very innovative, for my tastes. It deserved very well the first spot in the ToH community list of 2014. I listened yesterday, and I know that I will revisit it for once in a while. Also the cover art from Girardi >>>>>>>>>>

          • P.S. Link >>>>>>>>>

          • Edward #negrodMMXV

            P.S. Link >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ^ 1,000

          • thank you, guys! <3

          • Hmmmm have you heard Orgone? I was planning on featuring them in TDT next week most likely.

          • Edward #negrodMMXV

I have not and the name is not familiar…

          • Think if, now, this may explode your brain so I apologize in advance, but think if gorguts and pyrhhon had a baby. Also it’s name your price.

          • Edward #negrodMMXV

That sounds like a band I would be quite interested in…

          • I thought so too lol.

          • if it’s regarding a follow up to Gorguts Colored Sands, you’re going to have to share with the rest of the class

          • I couldn’t listen complete the Obscura album. But, I respect REAL artists even when I don’t like or can’t pass their work. Moral standards first!

          • neither can i, brotha-man. THAT is challenging. Colored Sands way more focused.

          • I think I paused in the song number 2, because my stomach was like a black hole jajajaja. It’s a very dense album. I think they weren’t in a good shape when they composed that :/

          • Scrimm

Try Earthly Love. That was the first song on Obscura to really stick with me.

          • let me try… But I can’t assure you something 🙁 I’m pretty sensitive to sounds; it’s kind of visceral..

          • Scrimm

It’s ok, when I bought it I thought is was the worst piece of crap ever released.

          • Scrimm

You guys are crazy. Keep trying. one day it will just click, happened to me. I had the album for over ten years before it did, but it finally happened and it was GLORIOUS.

          • Tyree

I hope you brought enough for everybody?

          • Edward #negrodMMXV

            Sharing means caring.

        • Scrimm

I cut off a finger to have one right now.

      • The only reason I even listen to the new Arch Enemy is because I like Alyssa’s vocals, always have ever since the Agonist.

  • Scrimm

Stupid staggered elease dates.I hate waiting an extra week.

  • Warheart

Weird timing, but today was released the “new” (?) Enslaved video:

    • Stanley

Strange. Although it is Enslaved and that means better late than never in my book. Can someone please buy Ice Dale a shirt?

  • JWG

On Ghoulgotha. You forgot to mention: Artwork that’s pretty much A Skeletal Domain Part II (it’s the same artist, right?). For those who can be swayed by a cover, that alone might do it.

I, for one, am going with Grymm (AMG)’s first instinct. It’s not doing enough to differentiate itself to warrant more than one spin.

  • J.R.

Orden Ogan sounds like Patchy the Pirate trying to be Metal. Will have to listen to more of.

  • Further Down the Metal Hole

Instead I got Saor’s Roots yesterday, which wasn’t supposed to be re-released until the end of the month.
