This Toilet Tuesday (11/1/2016)

You awaken from a night of revelry and marital consummation in a cold sweat. Something isn’t right. This isn’t your hotel room. “Where am I? Why can’t I move my hands?” you ask yourself. You try to crane your neck to get a better look at your surroundings, but it’s no use. Your entire body is paralyzed. Is this a dream? Sleep paralysis? Suddenly you hear a deep and guttural moaning from the foot of the bed. “Good morning, hubby,” the demoniacal voice cackles. “I’m so happy that we are finally together. Let us be of one flesh.” A pain like a thousand needles shoots through every nerve strand in your legs, searing your mind as a grotesque slurping sound slowly inches ever upward from the foot of the bed. Still, try as you might, you cannot move.

Surrender to the void of bliss. This is This Toilet Tuesday.

Spear, our mighty saint of new releases, is enjoying a few well-earned days of marital bliss. So, just like the good old days, I’m going to take the credit for all his hard work and bring you Toilet Tuesday from my ranch in Crawford. Stockhausen, Link, Karhu, and I have dug through Spear’s dowry to bring you a number of presents, so glut yourself in our musical revery.

Nashgul – Cárcava (Independent) [Grindcore]
Listen to “Progeria Inducida,” “Del vientre a la basura”

Nashgul is undoubtedly grind, but it’s the kind that non-grindheads can really sink in to. The songs aren’t too short, and the production is clean enough without being polished. The drummer does his best to screw that up anyway (that’s actually a compliment), providing a wild ride of chaotic fury in the fast sections before the whole band slows to a satisfyingly steady stomp when the time is right. It’s like 50 Bruce Lee clones lined up and sprinted by, all punching you in the face at a furious speed before 50 clones of Andre the Giant lumber by and kick your crumpled body in the balls. But, you know, in a good way. 11/1/2016 (Stockhausen)

Bahrrecht – L’aube glacée (Ketzer Records) [Black Metal]

Apparently things didn’t work out between Mr. Harvey and Ketzer, as the former bailed with the latter’s money and left the latter with no choice but to withdraw from making music, instead releasing music and signing superior bands (or at least, that’s what I’ve heard). Bahrrect is one of those bands. Their sophomore L’aube Glacee strikes a perfect balance between 90’s black metal worship (via Windir and Taake rather than Mayhem) and a more complex modern take. Both fury and melancholic reflection have their moments here. Bahhrecht’s sophomore is a triumphant demonstration of black metal’s current state. 10/31/2016 (Karhu)

Dark Tranquillity – Atoma (Century Media Records) [Melodeath]
Listen to “Atoma,” “The Pitiless”

Atoma seems to be the logical conclusion of Dark Tranquillity’s last era. Electronic experimentations expanded their sonic palette and pushed their traditional melodic death metal styling to a darker territory, splashed with Gothic elements and a philosophical edge in the lyrics department. So far, the three songs the band has released show to their fans how the overall record can be: an emotive ride through the human nature and experience, commanded by precise drumming, tearful melodic guitar work, pounding bass presence and the dual charm of Mikael Stanne’s charisma. In summary, if you like your metal with shades of melancholy, introspection and sorrow, you can wait for this record to dominate your end-year list; like I am doing, of course! 11/4/2016 (Link

Orthank – Orthank (Independent) [Black Metal]

I clicked play on that Orthank stream thinking I’d be greeted by some swords’n’sorcery power metal and instead was slammed by absolutely grotesque black metal. However, the mad Russians in Orthank have far more than just filth up their sleeves, and in between the walls of bestial noise and putrid growls, you’ll find gothic chanting, doomy riffs, and a surprising amount of nuance. This is pagan black metal like you’ve rarely heard it before: violent, dangerous, and downright nasty. FFO: Thy Grave, Rites of Thy Degringolade, VRTA 11/1/2016 (Dubs)

  • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Goddamn, that Starkill band is poopy.

    • They open for many a band in my area. Which is fine, gives me a chance to run errands and still catch the headliner

      • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Yeah, they are on a ton of bills.

    • PostBlackenedWhaleGaze

Oh god, why did I listen to it

  • You never go full Unearthed Elf.

    • Señor Jefe El Rosa

Album is actually pretty cool sounding.

      • It have some doom parts, it have some power parts, it have some melodic parts. I dig!

    • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Cool logo. Didn’t know “symphonic doom” was a thing. And no I wouldn’t consider My Dying Bride “symphonic”. Still ain’t a bad listen.

      • Señor Jefe El Rosa

Link informed me that the logo’s creator is the dude that made Emperor’s

        • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Ok, not surprised there. Should have figured.

          • Señor Jefe El Rosa

            Get with the program.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

            I hate music.

          • Excellent.

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

First two Empyrium albums are the closest I can think of when hearing “symphonic” and “doom” in the same sentence.
My Dying Bride isn’t symphonic to my ears either, but the band did some fantastic work in their career.

        • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Agreed. Need some more of their shit too.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I own Turn Loose the Swans, The Angel and the Dark River, The Light At the End of the World and The Dreadful Hours. I consider those their best full lengths.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

All I own is The Dreadful Hours and that is an amazing fucking album, hence why I need more.

          • I support Frank in this one. The Angel and the Dark River is a good.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

The Dreadful Hours indeed is amazing. The cover art also rules.

          • Eliza

            I agree, that album rules.

          • xengineofdeathx

Light at the end of the world is probably my favorite. Because they’re not afraid to riff it up. And those melodies are so goddamn tragic. New one ain’t to shabby either.

        • GoatForest

Draconian used to have a lot of symphonic elements.

    • Was listening this yesterday. It was so good and I was very impressed, if I listen to the whole thing I might review it.

    • Maik Beninton™

Only half elf, half venezuelan is real.

  • I might have to check out that Bahrrecht based solely on the promise of that cover art.

  • Señor Jefe El Rosa

Still catching up from last week but a few of these have caught my eye, Orthank and Nashgul seem interesting.

And Hammerfall in all their GLORY!

  • Elegant Gazing Globe

Bahrrecht is the kind of BM that I enjoy

    • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

And what would that be, as I was confused by the whole “Bahhrecht’s sophomore is a triumphant demonstration of black metal’s current state.”? What’s the current state?

      • Joaquin Stick

        • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

You bastard. What’s wrong with Montana?

          • Señor Jefe El Rosa

What’s wrong with Montana you ask? It isn’t Texas

      • Elegant Gazing Globe

I didn’t write the review, I just pressed play and listened

        • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Yeah, I know. But you said this was your kind of BM. So, what would that be?

          • Elegant Gazing Globe

mostly the kind you don’t like I presume : -*

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Dude, I’m not going to bitch you out, was just curious.

          • Elegant Gazing Globe

I know, I was baiting you. It was fun. For serious tho. I prefer riffs and not constant blast beats in my BM. One of my favorites is Somberlain, if that’s even considered BM anymore

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

I can totally understand that. And the Somberlain is an AMAZING fucking album. Unique as shit for the time.

          • Elegant Gazing Globe

I got that Ultimate Reissue, it gets a lot of play. I’m patiently waiting for SotLB to appear on discogs from a seller who doesn’t know what they’ve got

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

I have the Ultimate Reissue on vinyl and Storm too. Need both of those versions on CD, too.

          • Elegant Gazing Globe

What version of storm do you have? The OG ones are fukking $300!

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

The original (Ultimate Reissues) ones, got them when they came out in 2006. I’ve seen on discogs that they’re getting pricey, crazy.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Also have an original Where Dead Angels Lie EP.

          • Elegant Gazing Globe

ooooo that is interesting…too bad I don’t have a cd player

          • Elegant Gazing Globe

yeah $100 out the door and I’d own one. There are reissues out there for less, but this is one of those albums that I would need to not have a poser press version of

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Ahh, I just lucked out. Hopefully you can find one cheap someday.

          • I’ve been looking for about 2 years.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Damn, and those prices on discogs ain’t looking pretty.

          • It’s one of the few albums I can feel comfortable calling either a death metal or black metal album. It’s dead center, right in the middle of both genres.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

            Yeah, exactly!

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I always considered it an extremely smooth mixture of black metal and melodic death metal. Dissection invented that sound and already did it better than any other band ever did and ever will do.

          • Totally agree.

          • I like to have a nice hot steaming BM every morning. That’s my kind of BM. Sometimes I like em bloody too.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Dude, stop getting my shit hard.

  • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Sad to say I’m again sorta disappointed with another Dark Tranquillity album. While – when it comes to the Swedish melodeath bands – I could never stand Soilwork nor the watered down bullshit In Flames has been doing since the beginning of the new millennium, Dark Tranquillity was always the one Swedish melodeath band that managed to be easily accessible yet able to craft interesting songs with a healthy dose of atmosphere and superb vocal work for the genre. They were always a band of exceptional craftsmanship when it comes down to songwriting. And that’s exactly what has been lacking from the 3 latest albums: memorable songs. It’s not bad, it’s just somewhat bland.
To date Fiction remains the last truly great Dark Tranquillity album.

    • I can understand your stance.

I really really really liked their latter style, so Atoma is giving me what I need right now 🙂

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Have to admit a lot of the newer melodeath doesn’t really do anything for me anymore. I did enjoy the new Be’lakor album that came out this year though.

        • I can feel you on that, I’m very picky with newer melodic death, too. That Be’lakor one is a good. Did you managed to get a listen to the new Insomnium?

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Yeah, that one wasn’t bad but not great enough for me to rush out and buy it. I feel Insomnium peaked with Above the Weeping World.

          • Dumpster Lung ᴰᵃᵐᵃᵍᵉ_ᴵⁿᶜ⁸⁹

I was just about to reply to your comment about Fiction being Dark Tranquility’s best work, as that was where I left off with them. Haven’t heard much at all since then. Same thing with Insomnium. I love both bands, and melodeath in general, but I haven’t been good about keeping up with what’s going on with any of the bands at all.

I’ll definitely listen to their more recent work soon, though.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

My favorite DT album is The Gallery actually, but the style on that album is slightly different from what they started doing later on. They gradually started incorporating the electronic stuff, perfecting their new style with Damage Done, Character and Fiction – which I consider a three-in-a-row homerun.

          • Dumpster Lung ᴰᵃᵐᵃᵍᵉ_ᴵⁿᶜ⁸⁹

It’s been way too long. I remember really enjoying The Gallery too, but I don’t remember if I knew Damage Done or Character all that well.

          • PostBlackenedWhaleGaze

A friend introduced me to Insomnium with this album in college, and it changed how I thought of melo-death. Riffffffs

    • xengineofdeathx

It took a long time for me to really like Fiction. I feel like the 2:36 mark of this song has one of the absolute best riffs they’ve ever done though.

  • New (as far as I know) ‘Tallica song. Very meh.

    • Señor Jefe El Rosa

Ann plz! THis is the best of the three! Those dual harmonies are good.

    • I liked the second half guitars. I wish James kick out Kirk and Lars from the band. I mean, I wished that since years ago and is not happening.

    • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

That guitar tone and the fucking wah-wah need to get the fuck out.

      • Kirk needs to get the fuck out! He’s just noodling his crap all over the place.

        • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Yeah, he’s basically lost all focus.

          • Elegant Gazing Globe

my thought was that they’re all standing around looking at lars waiting for him to play faster

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

That’s the worst circle jerk ever.

          • Elegant Gazing Globe

            you’re fully torqued too?

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

            Rock hard!

    • Eliza

It’s just boring. Could’ve been worse.

    • more beer

I made about a minute and half and turned it off.

    • Óðinn

I see Hetfield is wearing on of those angsty, cunty “molan labe” t-shirts. What a bitch.

    • Ted Nü-Djent ™

This track is growing on me

  • Besides my neverending love to new Dark Tranquility I have my elfic ears to Void Meditation Cult, Unearthed Elf, Hammerfall, Paganland and Orthank.

Good week for me. Thanks for all the work, guys and I congratulate once again our mighty Spear for his incredible job.

  • Void Meditation Cult.

  • Elegant Gazing Globe

    Spectral Apparition sounds great

  • Waynecro

AVULSED!!! Nashgul, Burial in the Sky, and Xternity are pretty ripping as well. Excellent roundup, gents!

    • Spear

Don’t know if you saw, but Wastewalker released their album a week early, too.

      • Waynecro

        Fuck yes! Thanks, dude!

        • Spear

No problem! You’ll be seeing them again on Thursday, I’m thinking.

          • Waynecro

Sweet! Tech Death Thursday is the fucking best.

  • SomeGuyDude

    That Huldre album is NICE.
