This Toilet Tuesday (10/6/15)

The harsh beeping of your alarm clock startles you from your sleep, and you slam your fist down on the “off” button. 3:00 AM. No human should be awake at this hour, but your new job says otherwise. Groggily arising from the comfort of your bed, you shuffle into the living room in a haze and sit down on the couch. You sleepily contemplate your existence for half an hour before it occurs to you that you should probably get to work. Now lacking the time to make coffee, you pound a 12 ounce can of a specialty energy drink (labeled “Extra Strength!”) before hopping in the car and driving away in the predawn calm.

By the time you reach the parking ramp, your body is ready to explode. Drinking that noxious substance was clearly a bad idea on an empty stomach, as you’re beginning to feel light-headed and nauseous. You fumble around with your keys and drop them outside the door. You get a tremendous head rush bending over to retrieve them; this can’t wait. You duck behind a column in a spot you pray isn’t visible to any security cameras, drop your pants, and squat down in silent desperation. It takes only a moment for the shit to flow, and flow it does. You can hear it spatter against the concrete in a steady stream before eventually dying down in fitful spurts. When it finally stops, you hazard a glance at the ground. A small lake of sickly greenish sludge has puddled around your shoes, but you’re in luck; a relatively clean-looking newspaper insert sits just in arm’s reach. You grab it and finish your business, able to retain at least part of your dignity on this disgusting morning.

Soldier through the filth on This Toilet Tuesday.

die choking

Die Choking – III (The Compound Records) [Grindcore]
Listen to “Death’s Waveform”

“Death’s Waveform” is so chaotic, frenetic, and abrasive that you may be surprised this song was written for a band’s first full-length. Die Choking sound like the work of a veteran more than a group of young, hungry hustlers with something to prove, but there’s a youthful energy that bleeds into the concussive force of this song. The end result is a track that sounds like a tornado of bone and metal whirling around in a percussive maelstrom. There’s even a faint hint of weirdo grind that has me salivating. FFO: Cretin, Theories, The Locust 10/8/15 (W.)

kowloon walled city

Kowloon Walled City – Grievances (Neurot Recordings) [Noise/Post-Metal]
Listen to “Grievances”

Time to get bummed out in that special Neurot-way. Kowloon Walled City have taken a decidedly more despondent approach on Grievances, one that suits their label home well. The title track is slow, dour, and emotionally heavy; the only moments of levity come from Scott Evans’ vocals, but even those have a sort of pained vulnerability to them. Time to get sad. FFO: A Storm of Light, Fight Amp, Tempel 10/9/15 (W.)

Ævangelist – Enthrall to the Void of Bliss (20 Buck Spin) [Spoopy Metal]

One year removed from Writhes in the Murk, Ævangelist return with their bag of riff laden nightmares. At this point you probably know what kind of weirdness to expect from an Ævangelist record, so if you’re expecting them to have released something that will suddenly sway nonbelievers you’re going to be quite let down. If you’re a fan though, you’re in for a demented treat of an album that features some of their strangest moments yet (is that rapping I hear?). 10/9/15 (Leif Bearikson)

gods of eden

Gods of Eden – From the End of Heaven (Rocket Distribution/Nerve Gas) [Tech/Progressive Metal]
Listen to “Overseer”

I didn’t really know what to expect from Gods of Eden, so as usual, I set my expectations pretty low before hitting play. Too low, as it turns out. I was absolutely floored by the opening of “Overseer” and stayed enraptured for duration. The song captures the sense of extraterrestrial wonder and discovery in a way that few metal bands do; plenty of tech death and prog groups write songs about space, but Gods of Eden make you feel like you’re flying through it for the first time. “Overseer” is a stunning piece of music, and it has set the bar very high for the rest of From the End of Heaven10/9/15 (Spear)

Akral Necrosis/Marchosias – (inter)SECTION (Loud Rage Music) [Black Metal]

You guys miss that trill new Megadeth song?

    • Vote for Jeb

We were discussing it over at the Facebook group, but I don’t know if anyone has brought it up here yet.

    • Maik Beninton™

      I did.

    • I thought that song was pretty ok.

      • COAL ROLL

        Definitely reminiscent of pre-youthinasia stuff

        • Interesting.

It reminded me of United Abominations/The System Has Failed.

    • I liek.

    • good riffs, dumb vokills

      • Vote for Jeb

The vocals really bothered me too.

        • Chris Adler sure is getting a lot of work these days!

          • Vote for Jeb

            Stacking that paper.

          • Oh Lawd, these vocals. It sounds like he just spoke and they barely shifted the pitch and layered it a few times.

          • Vote for Jeb

Yah, it’s rill bad. I think they’re doing this because his voice is going flat, but I’d rather here his nasally warble than this.

          • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Idk, I thought he came off as less divisive here. Like he was trying to keep himself from irritating folks so they’f like the new record.

        • Trump’s Brainfart Jock Strap

The fact that it sounds almost exactly like Nevermore’s ‘Born’ bothers me.

      • Maik Beninton™

He’s just old, though I think they used autotune on it.

      • Mustaine vox have been annoying since forever.

        • that’s a great point. but annoying in a charming way, like the Overkill guy

          • I would love to hear the isolated vocal tracks from that last Overkill album. DLR level laughs could potentially be had with those.

    • KJM, Doom Hunter General

Eh, wasn’t bad. I honestly haven’t cared since the 80s. They’re my least favorite of the so-called ‘Big 4’.

      • Herr Schmitty

I’m kinda the opposite; they’re my very favorite of the big 4, but I only really love like 3 of their albums (all early on in their career.) Others have said nice things about some of the later stuff (like Risk) but I never really got into any of those…

        • when you think about it, none of the big four are really that fantastic. each one has a small handful of classic albums and a bunch of meh material

          • ME GORAK B.C.™

          • Óðinn

            FUCK YEAH, GORAK!!!!!!!!

          • Herr Schmitty

That’s pretty much exactly how I feel. All have done great things, but they became the Big 4 in the ’80s… based strictly on what each band did in the ’80s. I haven’t found any of their 90’s-today output impressive except for maybe just a little bit of MegaDave’s Countdown to Extinction.

ETA: But I’m an established poser, so all this comes with the caveat of ‘what the hell do I know?’

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

Black Sabbath became legends primarily based on 4 albums released between 1970-72.

          • Herr Schmitty

Quite true, no argument there. I’d piggyback on to that that they only grew in popularity with Ozzy’s solo career/ascension to metal god-hood through the ’80s; people then had to look back at what he’d done before his solo shit and a gateway was opened!

          • Ted Nü-Djent ™

Because the term was coined in the 80’s wasn’t it?

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

Yeah, but a handful is enough when they’re all 4-star classics.

          • Óðinn

It’s true that albums like Master of Puppets and Reign in Blood can be considered among the best Metal albums of all-time.

          • Mvthvr Shvbvbv 8

That’s a lot of bands though. Not every album by a band can be a zinger. Except maybe Converge if you don’t count their really early work.

          • i just read your “about” and it waz funny.

          • Trump’s Brainfart Jock Strap

Or Angra. I can’t name on bad album of their’s.

          • Ted Nü-Djent ™

So that’s a no on Converge then

          • Trump’s Brainfart Jock Strap

I’d rather take the German Big Four (Sodom, Destruction, Tankard and Kreator. I’d also toss in Deathrow and make it five).

          • Óðinn

            Yes, that’s true now.

          • Ted Nü-Djent ™

            Jimmy plz!

        • KJM, Doom Hunter General

In the early days Metallica were my clear faves, then it was Slayer. Now I’m more likely to care about Anthrax.

PS: Mom wants moar cookiez, will pay if necessary. OTOH, I settle for anything edible. ^_^ (hey that even rhymed)

          • Mvthvr Shvbvbv 8

“…And Justice For All” > everything else by all of those bands. But this is just one man’s (probably flawed) opinion.

          • Herr Schmitty

We can definitely work that out! Would be happy to send more, I even have a bag sitting on the counter right now.

I’m also working on a back order I promised to send to the big 3 (editors!) and have been collecting goodies from a few spots over the last month. I betcha I can get some cookies down to you guys in the next week or two, fire me a text if you still have my digits 😉

          • KJM, Doom Hunter General

I still have all your deets. I’ll get back to ya.

          • Lacertilian

            You bastards!

        • Ted Nü-Djent ™

      • Óðinn

Yeah, even though I was a die-hard Thrash fan growing up, I have to admit that I haven’t really liked anything from “the big 4” since the 1990 either. I did kind of like Slayer’s Christ Illusion and World Painted Blood but not as much as their 80s material. It was nice to have the original Slayer line-up back together. I think Rust in Peace is the last Megadeth album I actually enjoyed the whole way through. To me, Peace Sells is the definitive Megadeth album. Too many line-up changes, inconsistency, and now too much right-wing politics and Christianity, for me to continue relating to Megadeth and Mustaine.

        • KJM, Doom Hunter General

Agreed about ‘Peace Sells’, political lyrics that everyone can relate to.

Yeah, if I want to live in a Theocracy(as Santorum and his ilk do) I’ll move to Saudi Arabia.

        • Lacertilian

I have a soft spot for Christ Illusion too.
Something about it just seemed right at the time.

          • Ted Nü-Djent ™

It felt like Slayer again. That original chemistry was back and it felt good.

          • Lacertilian

Also had the dude who did the 80s art come back for that extra authenticity.

    • ME GORAK B.C.™

    • Trump’s Brainfart Jock Strap

It’s pretty good, but Dave needs to let Kiko shine through a bit more. Definitely their best work in quite a while though.

    • Ted Nü-Djent ™

Nope and I did enjoy it

  • New Dog Fashion Disco album “Ad Naseum” out this week too.

  • KJM, Doom Hunter General

Speaking of Kowloon, the restaurant of the same name in Saugus was probably mobbed with WWE wrestlers last night(RAW was in Boston).

    • Janitor Jim Duggan

      Were you at Raw?

      • KJM, Doom Hunter General

Nah. I wouldn’t spend the money to see them now unless I was well off. I have too many concerts coming. After all, I used to get free Raw/SD tix during the Attitude Era.

        • Janitor Jim Duggan

Lucky. I have to save money too because Maiden, Sabbath and The Cure are going to Madison Square Garden.

          • Wow!!!

          • more beer

I saw Maiden and Priest in the Garden in the 80`s. The place got destroyed. Every seat in the place was ripped out and getting thrown around. The had to close the place down for a while to repair it. I`m surprised they will let Maiden play there again.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

I know Priest isn’t allowed back but Maiden was there too? I’m as surprised as you are.

        • Trump’s Brainfart Jock Strap

I’m really wanting to see Killing Joke in Richmond, but that’s about 100 miles away.

  • That Goatpreacher track is some pretty mean shit but the drumming is damn sloppy though, and this is coming from a sloppy drummer.

Istidraj ain’t too bad. Singaporeian black metal (Metal in general) is usually mean.

    • Hubert

THREE inverted crosses in the logo. That’s pretty metal

      • Vote for Jeb

        And a pentagram!

      • But three is the number of the holy trinity. It cancels out the Satan. They’ve gotta go back to the drawing board.

        • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Don’t fret, Joseph, the band has been split up for a while. So, the drawing board is not needed in this particular instance.

          • None of them have done anything since the 90’s either. It’s like they all just decided to stop making metal. The drummer was the most active member.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Yeah, I noticed that. Strange. I don’t know how they could top Zygotical Sabbatory Anabapt anyway.

          • Vote for Jeb

That’s a hell of a title. And by that, I mean it’s a very interesting collection of words.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

All the albums titles are interestingly strange.

          • I think it has to do with English not being their first language too. It’s like Anal Vomit, they probably picked the most extreme/disgusting words and put them together.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

            Good point.

          • Vote for Jeb

Yah, I’m wondering if they just used a random word generator or something.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

I can’t recall if the lyrics are included in the record or not.

          • I have the picture disc and I don’t think the lyrics are. I’ll double check tonight.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

I have the reissue, I’ll check as well.

          • I think the direction was there, but yeah. I think it’s just a kind of pick and choice thing sometimes.

          • Vote for Jeb

I kinda like it. It’s got a charm to it.

          • Trump’s Brainfart Jock Strap

Project Pitchfork got their name by flipping through an English dictionary and slapping words together.

      • Trump’s Brainfart Jock Strap

Not one, not two, but three three three inverted crosses!

  • CyberneticOrganism

    TTT for life

  • Maik Beninton™

Ævangelis: the soundtrack to your spooky adventures.

  • fudge, i forgot to heads-up a few weeks ago when Status Abnormis released their sophomore LP:

  • Nothing got me today, to be honest.

Back to listening Swallow the Sun and shut the doors claiming that nobody understands me.

Theres 3 new StS albums coming out, right?

      • Vote for Jeb

        That is correct.

Hm, hopefully its better than Emerald Forest and the Blackbird, which only had a couple good uns

          • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

One is a continuation of the path they have been going down (they have a new, pretty good, song out of this) Second is funeral doom-ish. Third is acoustic.

            Well, 1/3 could be worse

          • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

3/3 mate, Hopefully the one will be more like Morning… and Hope than EF too.

          • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

            Well 2/3 more likely.

We shall see. Im waitin to see if them or Hooded Menace wants to tip the scales out of Ahab’s favor this year

          • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Pre-ordered the new HM as soon as it became available. Not feeling that AHAB incredimuch though. I mean, it’s good but not quite there. Like the band would have fallen short of what they attempted.

I donno man, i lurb it

          • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

It’s better than The Giant, I’ll give you that.

      • D.E.P., feels

      • Yup yup yup.

One regular doom/death, one fiúnerol doom and one acoustic to cut your wrists and die in beautiful pain.

    • Trump’s Brainfart Jock Strap

Good band, and awesome live show! Saw them with Finntroll and Moonsorrow a few years back.

    • Trump’s Brainfart Jock Strap

BTW, they have a new one out.

  • Celtic Frosty

There’s a new Terzij de Horde album coming out on Friday. I haven’t heard any of it yet but it’s apparently supposed to be really good. I quite liked their debut.

  • Celtic Frosty

Also Altarage – “MMXV” comes out this Friday.

  • The Die Choking track has a little bit of older Dillinger going on it sounds like. They sound a little different from the last release but I like the direction.

  • Scrimm

    Looking forward to that Vulnus

    New Kowloon? Nice

  • i bet @Dem0nocracy digs that new Oroborous

  • 365chaosriddendays

I took a shit in a Chicago parking garage once – wiped with a sock.
I was in a nicer area and I looked like a dirty hippy so conveniently nobody had a bathroom I could use.

    • Trump’s Brainfart Jock Strap

Gah, and they are bitchy about people just up and using the bathroom in places like Wrigleyville/Lakeview.

      • RJA

It was before a show at the Park West – north side I believe?

        • Trump’s Brainfart Jock Strap

Yep, just a short ride from downtown. I saw VNV Nation and Haujobb there back in the day.

  • Trump’s Brainfart Jock Strap

Some bad news: Satyricon’s singer just got diagnosed with a brain tumor.

  • Count_Breznak

    New owl

  • Waynecro

Die Choking and Gods of Eden sound pretty good. Ouroboros too. I need some speedy jams for my cardio session. I’ve been listening to American Psycho and Famous Monsters by the Misfits during cardio a lot lately. Those CDs don’t terrify the neighbors, though, and I’d hate for them to think it’s safe to talk to me.

  • Edward: “Kowloon Walled City!”
Richter: “F Yeah, Kowloon Walled City!!”
    Edward: “Kownoon Walled City!!!”

Slim pickings this week. Though Beaten to Death are interesting.
