This Toilet Tuesday (10/4/16)

Welcome once more to This Toilet Tuesday! Let’s cut to the chase; we already know why we’re all here. Stockhausen, Dubs, and I have grabbed four bands of very different flavors of metal to represent the best of the best this week, so be sure to check those out during your daily grind. There’s plenty more to be had besides, so let’s get to it.

Swampcult – The Festival (Transcending Obscurity Records [Doom]

Is it true that we’ve reached peak Cthulhu? Yes. Is Swampcult’s The Festival, based on a Lovecraft story of the same name, still worth a listen? Definitely. Fans of riffs, cheesy narration (a la Bal-Sagoth), and albums with theatrical production are sure to be pleased with this Dutch band’s fun mix of death, black and doom rooted in classic metal. The production is a bit thin, and the vocals may be distracting for some, but if you want to go on a sonic journey into a world of literary horror, look no further. FFO: Bal-Sagoth, Obituary, Summoning 10/2/16 (W.)

Vanhelga – Ode & Elegy (Talheim Records) [Black Metal]

Vanhelga has made the perfect album for this time of year. The air is getting cold but not yet frostbitten, and the clouds obscure the sun but don’t quite swallow it. You don’t need to shriek at the frozen moon through a howling snowstorm, but maybe you need to gaze pensively into a lake that’s gathering frost around the edges. The album ranges from powerfully depressive to furiously harsh, always maintaining a distinct sense of forlorn abandonment, as if a ray of sunshine is just outside your desperate reach. Wallow with me over at the NCS stream. 10/1/16 (Stockhausen)

Haar/Ur Draugr – Haar/Ur Draugr (split- ATMF) [Black Metal/Weird Death]

I don’t know what it is about black metal and ugly death metal that works so well together, but I am all for these splits we’re seeing lately. Haar and Ur Draugr are an exceptionally good pairing, and not just because both of them have names that will make you sound like a stroke victim if you say them aloud. The two sound like they share a common evolutionary ancestor, each using a raw but practical mix of harmony and dissonance to achieve their unique sounds. They’re even fairly similar lyrically, exploring humanity’s search for a greater meaning. Regardless of your preferred band or genre on this split, you’re sure to enjoy the other. 10/7/16 (Spear)

  • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

    Post-metal. Fucking dumb.

    • W.

It’s been a while since I jammed them, but I remember Mouth of the Architect actually having some killer death metal riffs.

      • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

I’ve heard the name. I just hate the post shit.

        • W.

          This I know about you.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Well, I’m glad we can move on, doc.

      • Joaquin Stick

        I like them!

        • W.

IIRC they’re quite a bit more growly and riffy than most post metal.

    • I don’t mind things like that……until Pitchfork discovers it, and the hipsters latch on.

    • Howard Dean

Remember when Flavor Flav was all over every MTV/VHI show? It seems like video footage of Flav all cracked out and acting ridiculous was America’s favorite entertainment for a couple years. Hell, I even think he did the “choose your favorite crackwhore/trailer park stripper” dating show BEFORE Bret Michaels. Dude was a visionary.

      • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff
        • Howard Dean

Haha, damn Flav and Brigitte were a rough couple.

          • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

The show was even worse. She had a habit and they were trying to make it work if I recall correctly. Total train wreck and I’m an ass for watching.

          • Howard Dean

They both looked about 15+ older than they actually were. Cocaine is a helluva drug.

          • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

Yea totally! And she was a thing back in the 80’s….

          • Treebeard, Father of Fangorn

She may be considered more of a thing now.

      • Treebeard, Father of Fangorn

        We remember, boooooooiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.

        • Brutalist_Receptacle

          YOU MISSPELLED “BWeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.”

    • this video was the first thing i watched this morning and I’m still confused and upset

      • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

        Why are you upset?

        • Because why did he rip up the desk and get in the tub? Did he really kick him in the face? Why is Flav so homophobic?

          • Scrimm

I think I missed the homophobic part

          • Howard Dean

Because he didn’t want the dudes to touch his dick(?)

I dunno, I think I missed it, too.

          • Scrimm

Yeah if people see that as homophobic I’m in trouble

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Because it’s some dumb show? And Flav has always been a dipshit?

          • God

          • Wait, I thought metal was the only genre of music with dumb shitty people.

          • I was exaggerating the upset part

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Bro, are you gonna be ok, though? Bro?

          • UpPup!

          • Brutalist_Receptacle

  • Scrimm

Dammit had my dates wrong, though Krypts was out this week.

    • RJA

Yea buddy – I’m excited for that one too.

      • Scrimm

Yep. Oh well not like anything pther than Phantasm 5 this week matters to me anyway.

  • Señor Jefe El Rosa

Hrmmmmm… not much this week jumping out at me. Gonna continue my regular jammz

  • nbm02ss

“Sonata Arctica – The Ninth Hour (Nuclear Blast Records) [Power Metal, Allegedly]
    Shitload of Boring” /dead.

    • W.

Man, there are few cases so pronounced of a band becoming so utterly boring over their career as Sonata Arctica.

    • Spear
      • YouTube Power Metal Fan

“Dude you should definitly go back to the roots, come on Tony Kakko with a hat? I miss the times of Fullmoon, San Sebastan, Ain’t your Fairytale, those melodies that made you literally fly, fucking Victoria’s Secret…Unia, Ecliptica, Days of Grays, Reckoning Night, Takatalvi, dude, those albums where worth it…would give up anything for your next album to be as epic as the old ones.”

        – Francisco Hidalgo

  • Howard Dean

What the fuck is “Faces of the Bog” supposed to mean? The only thing I can think is that they are referring to those Celtic bog mummies that they dig out of the peat bogs:

I got excited at first because I thought Faces of the Bog was an ESL goregrind/death metal band (given the ridiculous name), but then I saw that it was produced by Sanford Parker and labeled sludge/doom, and I subsequently went soft.

    • W.

I checked it out because the name intrigued me, but the music isn’t my thing. With all the terrible band names out there, it’s sad when a band with an actually good name doesn’t quite sound up to snuff.

    • tigeraid

It is pretty metal, if so.

    • Treebeard, Father of Fangorn

This comment has given me a laugh I’ve not had in a long time.

  • tigeraid

    I enjoy Power Metal.

    Sonata Arctica sucks.

  • Maik Beninton™

“Begging for Incest”, well, I’m not googling that either.

    • I’m not even typing or copying that

      • God

Yeah not like it gave me an erection or anything…haha…nope..definitely not.

        • Brutalist_Receptacle

It’s not incest if i hook up with YOUR sister

    • Kevin Nash’s Jackknife

I bet if you type that into Google you get put on a watch list.

    • SomeGuyDude

Slam band. Last album was damn good actually.

      • Maik Beninton™

        I was going with porngrind.
That name is still a huge downer.

  • “Steel Temple”

Well yeah I am required to click on that

*Album preview with cut/paste samples from album*

  • That Vanhelga bungles in my jungle.

  • Cocncepts of Math is the nerdiest fucking name ever, and perhaps the most fitting for a prog album.

  • Creep on that Gatecreeper, folks.

    • Elegant Gazing Globe

I heard they did a show in Lubbock but there wasn’t a peep about it from the west texas constituency

  • God

    *googles begging for incest*

    • *google starts casually slipping you related ads*

      • Joaquin Stick

        Farmers only?

        • *sucks air through clenched teeth, slowly backpedals*

        • God

Cause you don’t have to be lonely

  • God

It’s a shame. I LOVE Kyng live. Such high energy performers. But on album their songs just really fall flat for me.

  • Joaquin Stick

Is Haar a known band around here and I just missed them up until now? I’m checking out the split, because Ur Draugr, but this Haar stuff is super rad!

  • Also Swampcult sounds interesting. You mentioned Lovecraft and the first thing I thought of were the swamp cultists from the second act of The Call of Cthulhu.

  • Count_Breznak

Good BDM/Slam, but gets a bit Cory at times.

  • Stanley

That Sordide track is pretty rocking. Trust the french to come up with some off the rails blackened/speed/everythingbarthekitchensink oddity. Never heard of them before, but this one track rules.

  • Ayreonaut

Picked up a couple new cds, I got the new Sword album, low country, the acoustic counterpart to high Country. I’ve only listened through it once but I gotta say, I am really liking it!

    • Señor Jefe El Rosa

I felt let down. I’m glad you enjoyed it though

      • Ayreonaut

Yeah I noticed it didn’t have any good reviews, but I think it’s a good laid back album. Good music for an autumn drive through the mountains up here.

        • Señor Jefe El Rosa

I’d rather just listen to High Country for that purpose, haha

          • Ayreonaut

I was actually trying to get high Country but I couldn’t remember which one was the acoustic or heavier album at the record store, so I figured low meant heavy and ended up with that one

  • re: dat Haar/Ur Draugr split…
Is it still called a split when both bands collaborate on the music? Just curious. I remember it being one long (albeit it great) song.

    • Spear

Yo, sorry for the late reply, but I will label anything that’s pure collaboration as such. In this instance, it’s four separate songs that are each credited to a specific artist, so I went with “split.” It’s one of those albums that I would have liked to have gone into further detail for, but I just didn’t know what to say about it. It’s very, very good, though.

      • i see my err now: Agent Bauer must have linked just the Ur Draugr song on FB. i mistakenly thought it was one collaborative song. Oops!! Thx Spear

  • Waynecro

Aghast sounds pretty good. I’m really curious to hear Begging for Incest, but, yeah, there’s no fucking way I’m Googling that. Shit, I wouldn’t even Bing that.
