As usual, October has been very kind to us metalheads, spewing forth new releases simultaneously from both ends like that time you ate undercooked bacon-wrapped duck appetizers at your buddy’s Christmas party. Alas, all good things must come to an end, and October’s violent excretions end only with its death. The good news is that it saved its biggest gush for last; there is a ton of new music out this week. So as you watch October pass on- fatally dehydrated, violently twitching in an acrid puddle of its own vomit and liquid feculence- raise a pint in its honor and blast your favorite autumn album. Flush on, brothers and sisters. -Spear

Haken Restoration

Haken – Restoration (Inside Out/Century Media) [Progressive Metal/Rock]

Listen to “Crystallized”

Haken’s new EP, Restoration, revisits and completely revamps select tunes from their 2008 demo, Enter the 5th Dimension. It’s fantastically clear how much they have progressed as a band, with new arrangements that spin out over longer periods of time without feeling obligatory or repetitive. I’ve always liked the touch of cheese that Haken adds, because it’s a very self-aware cheese. Those moments weave in and out of a landscape of brilliant prog, giving the listener a lot to digest for an EP. Word on the street is that they’re already planning a new album, so dig in to this release and get ready for more. (Stockhausen)

 gnaw their tongues

Gnaw Their Tongues – Wir Essen Seelen In Der Nacht (Independent) [Experimental Black Metal]

Stream

Mories, the unholy master of evil, one-man metal, has reared his ghastly head around here more than once, and this surely won’t be the last time. This short collection beckons the listener into horrifying territory, through halls of plaintive moans and ghastly shrieks, through pits of haunted orchestras and possessed machines. His work as Gnaw Their Tongues continues the tortured, buried textures of 2012’s All the Dread Magnificence of Perversity, and offers a bit more dark and demonic wanderings, as the last track “Droom van de Rattenvreter” is the closest we get to a “band” sound. Get in here and gaze into the abyss of the ages. (Stockhausen)

giant squid

Giant Squid – Minoans (Translation Loss) [Art Doom]

Listen to “Sixty Foot Waves”

Many moons ago, I was drifting around bargain electronics warehouse Entertainmart and found a used copy of Giant Squid’s then latest album Metridium Fields for only $1.00. I had read about the album in Metal Maniacs (RIP) and decided I should pick it up. I’m certainly glad I did, as the repetitive, mantra-esque funereal riffs within utterly enchanted me. Ever since that album, I’ve kept tabs on Giant Squid. So it was with eager anticipation that I pressed play on their most recent effort, Minoans. Thankfully, this album does not disappoint. The wave-like riffs still crash over you. The warmth and depth of the songs are still evident, and the melodic beauty in the vocals and arrangements still allure you into the watery depths like the seductive song of the siren. If you like Giant Squid, you will love this album. If you like pelagic shanties and colossal riffs, you owe it to yourself to jam this record. (W.)

abysmal dawn

Abysmal Dawn – Obsolescence (Relapse) [Tech Death]

Stream

Abysmal Dawn are a meat-and-potatoes death metal outfit. You can always count on them to release a consistently heavy album. There isn’t really much on Obsolescence that you could label progression; the sonic signature is pretty consistent with their previous output. But that output is always good for a dose of the straightforward heavy. Sometimes you just need something to make your head bang. Abysmal Dawn deliver that in spades. (W.)

bloodshot dawn

Bloodshot Dawn – Demons (Independent) [Tech Death]

Stream

Bloodshot Dawn released an amazing album with their self-titled and now they are back once again with Demons. Demons is everything a Bloodshot Dawn fan could have hoped for and more. FFO Allegaeon, Revocation. This is one of the best albums I have heard this year. A Bloodshot Dawn, Revocation, Sylosis, Allegaeon, Vektor tour needs to happen. Trust me when I say you can’t go wrong grabbing this one. Keep an eye out for my review of Demons. (Jack Bauer)

beyond creation

Beyond Creation – Earthborn Evolution (Season of Mist) [Progressive Tech Death]

Stream

Beyond Creation have returned with their second album Earthborn Evolution. Their last album, The Aura, solidified them as gods of tech death. This album only serves to enhance that description. If you liked The Aura you will like Earthborn Evolution. It’s everything about The Aura done even better, as if that was somehow physically possible. DAT BASS. (Jack Bauer)

ANAL

Anaal Nathrakh – Desideratum (Metal Blade) [Extreme Metal]

Stream

Anaal Nathrakh’s newest offering is at once both awesome and a little bit disappointing. When taken on a song-by-song basis, Desideratum is extremely solid; the music is as vicious as ever (even with the occasional groovy break), and the short bursts of clean vocals come in at exactly the perfect moments. The problem here is the lack of variety; just about any riff could be easily lifted from one song and transplanted in another. It’s unfortunate given how well each song stands on its own, but as a whole, it starts to wear a little thin by the end. I guess the takeaway here is that Anaal is fun, but only for a few minutes. • Edward

Pretty stoked for Atriarch and that new Behemoth EP. I had no clue they had an EP coming out.

    • Spear

Best get on that Behemoth EP quick. They’re doing a very limited run of it.

    • Tyree

I’m curious hear what that Behemoth EP sounds like. I hope they keep the production similar to The Satanist and don’t go back to the plastic sounding drums again

      • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

Same sessions so I reckon the productions gonna stay the same.

      • Keegan Lavern Still

I think the guitars on the Satanist could have used a little more punch, but other than that I loved the production on it.

        • Tyree

Me too! It could have been tweaked here and there but it is by far their best production thus far.

    • W.

Ed, why should I know Atriarch?

      • Edward

        1) Ritual of Passing was a super tight album.

        2) they play something I have seen labeled as “death rock”, it’s slow and heavy and reminds me a tad bit of a darker Neurosis.

  • Tyree

    Oooooooooo, New Gnaw Their Tongues!

    • Edward

I listened to it over the weekend. Pretty weird and frightening.

      Plague Beasts >>>>>>

      • Tyree

That’s good! I expect it to be weird and frightening. I still need to listen to Lord Time as well.

        • Edward

Oh yeah, whenever, not a big deal. I still need to listen to a lot of stuff but since Friday I am pretty stuck on RTJ2.

          • Tyree

I’ve been listening to nothing but death metal releases so far this week. GLAB is going to be fucking brutal this time around!

        • Stockhausen

          Lord Time rules!

      • Stockhausen

All The Dread Magnificence of Perversity > Plague Beasts

You’ll notice there’s only one “>,” because it’s dang close.

    • Stockhausen

Yessssss. I’m loving it. It’s a short one, but it crushes your soul efficiently.

  • Edward

Oh! Guys, I think this post needs a “read more” tag.

    • W.

      Fixed it, homie.

  • MoshOff

I enjoyed the new AN. It’s not terribly innovative, sure, but I’m finding it thoroughly enjoyable.

    • good to hear. they’re pretty consistent and i don’t want to leave the AN train just yet…

      • SMOHLG

you’re not ready to leave the anaal train???

  • W.

For some reason Atriarch is ringing bells, but I can’t place it. Hmm.

  • Link D. LeonhⒶrt V.

to me, new AtG is <3.. I will look for the new As Blood Runs Black just for nostalgia.. Their first record was the only deathcore thing that i enjoyed when i was in college 😛

    • Guacamole Jim

You never got on the Despised Icon train? They’re pretty killer.

      • W.

I can get behind you for getting behind DI.

      • Link D. LeonhⒶrt V.

wasn’t on board on the ‘core scene-train, really.. i will check it to see how they sound.. thanks for the recommendation!

      • I nominate this afternoon as Despised Icon Appreciation Day!
        GL

      • Tyree

Their drummer is disgusting. Not a big fan of their music though.

        • Guacamole Jim

He makes me want to quit. DI was the first metal show I ever saw, and I spent the entire time staring slack jawed at how insane he was.

        • Didn’t he use the butt end of the sticks? He was nuts man

          GL

        • W.

He had some of the most brutal fills I’ve ever heard.

    • Rebecca Blvck

I can’t wait to party in college in 5 years!

  • @metaphysicalanus:disqus calls me the Abysmal Dawn Defense Squad, and that’s cool.
the soloing on the new album is INSANE. they’ve stepped up their game 200%. i know the riffs aren’t going to blow any minds, but it’s OSDM after all.

    • Death

      I said it once.

      • and it was funny enough to share with the rest of the group 🙂

        • Death

I don’t see how it was funny.

          • c’mon man, can we just go back to being pals?

          • Death

When you apologize for calling me a loofah.

          • W.

            You’re not a loofah.

          • Death

            I’m not being serious, dudes

          • Stockhausen

I’m being serious: you’re a loofah. A beautiful, Finnish loofah.

          • Death

            I’ll gladly scrub you.

          • Stockhausen

            Mmmmm…

          • i’m genuinely sorry for that.

          • Death

Good (I’m not being serious at all, dude)

          • k, well you seemed crabby.

          • Death

I am sick, so that’s why it seems like that. Fuck autumn.

        • Someone also called them Abysmal Yawn which, while maybe unwarranted, i think is pretty funny.

  • man that obituary album was a snore-fest. Talk about resting on your laurels.

    • W.

I heard it was pretty disappointing.

    • i’ll say the same thing about the new ATG album, though it may make me some enemies

      • Worcester-Metal has been boring for quite some time now

        • Cock ov Steele

Not the same WARcester it once was eh?

      • Death

        I agree, mate.

      • Stockhausen

Straight up, yo. Good to see you embrace who you really are.

      • W.

ATG actually isn’t really getting much love around here.

        • what’s your take on it, Dubya?

          • W.

I’m going to give it a listen and get back to ya.

          • W.

I’m almost finished with it, and honestly, I’m not that impressed.

        • Link D. LeonhⒶrt V.

I loved the literary references, the guitars and the atmosphere.. The only thing i didn’t liked is that the songs ends abruptly, more than SotS did, and that the drumming is very linear sometimes.. in overall, it’s a very concise record, IMHO

      • Spear

I enjoyed ATG’s new album, but I’d say it’s pretty well-documented at this point that my taste in metal is terrible.

      • Scrimm

Lyrics are great, the rest…. not so much. At least I got to see them touring for SOTS.

    • TrickleDownTacoRiff

You’re right Inked In Blood S sounds formulaic. BUT I dig their groovy ass DM OSDM formula so I dig that shit! Hey wheres CROM to weigh in on this?

      • Tyree

I got you back on this BRAH!

        • TrickleDownTacoRiff

YES! I’m going to my happy place!

      • Scrimm

Haven’t heard enough to make a solid opinion yet, but at least the deluxe edition comes with a sticker!

        • Xan

God damnit. No sticker for Xan. I got to make everyone at my dinner table scowl at me when I placed a picture of a headless corpse on it though.

          • Scrimm

Nice. I love offending the family with album covers.

        • TrickleDownTacoRiff

          Damn I want that now!

          • Scrimm

I enjoyed the album. It aint gonna win any awards for originality but I liked it a hell of a lot better than the last album.

          • TrickleDownTacoRiff

            Agreed!

      • Lord Ov Kapsko

I once used an CC to pizza reference. If I want to eat a steak and i got a veggie burger instead I’ll be fucking pissed. Obituary are the steak that I crave so much every few years. Obituary are the awfull looking trucker bar where the table’s are dirty, the waitress is ugly but the food is the best damn thing that you will ever have in tour mouth. Except my erected fallus ovcourse.

        • TrickleDownTacoRiff

Damn I love what you just said! Sooo fucking true!! The music part especialy, although throbbin phallus is a close 2nd.

          • TrickleDownTacoRiff

            damn i want that now!

          • Lord Ov Kapsko

            We’re grown man after all.

          • TrickleDownTacoRiff

            yea! (no Homo)

          • Lord Ov Kapsko

            Bromo.

          • TrickleDownTacoRiff

            i can dig that!

      • Xan

I quite liked the new Obituary album. I’m biased as I love even the shittiest of OSDM so my opinion shouldn’t carry as much weight as a more skeptical person’s should.

        • TrickleDownTacoRiff

Agreed 100%! my opinion sucks too!

  • three Par Olofsson album covers in a row? KSoFM must be cringing right now!

    • MoshOff

Say what you will, but his art is instantly recognizable.

      • this is true. and i do like it! but 9/10ths of the time it means … *looks left and right* … tech death

  • Scrimm

So much new stuff this week. My wallet is in trouble. Beyond Creation, Obituary, Hideous Divinity, Annihilated, Blood Freak, plus the store now has the new Septycal Gorge and Horrendous.

    • Tyree

Shit, I missed that Blood Freak album. NICE!

      • Scrimm

Yeah it almost went unnoticed by me as well. I really hope its better than the last album.

    • Xan

      Get listening….BOOOOOOY!

  • New Anaal Nathrakh better than Passion, maybe not quite as good as Vanitas.

    • Death

Eschaton is in my opinion their best.

      • In the Constellation of the Black Widow (post-trve, but just a better sounding album imo)

        • Death

while I like that album a lot, Eschaton takes the cake for me

          • they’re all good, especially for Brits.

          • Death

Brits have made better music than Americans.

          • I guess this is a matter of perspective.

          • Death

Let’s just touch wieners and agree to disagree.

          • Stockhausen

            pix pls

          • Death

            Oh you

          • Hey! I see what you’re trying to do there!

          • Death

There’s nothing wrong with trying. *hops away*

          • O.O are you death AND the easter bunny!?

          • Death

Do I look like a guy who brings joy with chocolate?

          • Depends on what kind of joy 😉 😉

          • Death

            I take away the joy.

    • Stockhausen

I’m really enjoying it. A couple parts drag on a bit, but it is a very solid addition to the year 2014.

  • I see a lolbuttz on the Haken stream 🙂

    • W.

I wish I could take credit for that. They don’t quite tickle my pickle in the way they do for other people.

      • Stockhausen

The way they tickle your pickle for other people?

        • W.

I’m fairly certain my sentence is grammatically correct, you rube.

          • yourube.com, my favorite video site

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

            Did you win?

          • Death

            I didn’t answer it.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

            Oh bother.

          • Death

So you’re half Winnie the Pooh?

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

I said I was a BEARgod, you silly fiend.

          • Stockhausen

Oh it is. I’m just asking if things tickle your pickle for the benefit of others. Own up, W, the people deserve to know.

          • W.

A gentleman never asks, and a lady never tells.

          • Stockhausen

A president never pickles, a dead composer always lolbuttz.

    • Stockhausen

Haha. I believe that was our favorite former detective.

      • i’m back

        • Brass is promoting you to Captain, McNulty.

          • Zapp Brannigan

I am a solid object to your decision. 🙁

          • Stockhausen

I too, am not a liquid or gas.

          • Zapp Brannigan

            What are you then…

          • Stockhausen

            A solid object, like you.

          • I thought you were going to say plasma… because no one ever remembers that one 🙁 and its the hottest one!

          • Zapp Brannigan

Well played sir! Well Played. Allow me to invite you to my quarters for Cham-paggin. (Keep an eye on him Kif, I think we have a rogue liquid in our mist)

          • Mother Shabubu III

This is the best account yet.

Could I interest you in some celebratory kay-sa-dillas?

          • Bunk Moreland

Shiiiiiiiiiiit, I’d think twice before promoting that mothafucka.

  • ThisPelligrini feller sure has the sparkling water I needed to drink today.

  • Death

This is some good stuff from Russia.

      • Death

But that band is called Kauan, not Blood, you silly goose.

        • Count_Breznak

Hey I just needed a reason to post some Blood, the label’s name is as good as any

        • Pagliacci is Kvlt

Speaking of…what is the proper pronunciation of Kauan?

      • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

        Blood Music = label

    • digging it!
i’m not a big doom fan, but there’s enough black to keep my attention

      • Death

Most of the stuff is in Finnish, even though they are a Russian/Ukranian band.

    • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

They should tour with KYPCK. And make more of this, instead of what they usually do. This tickles me good way!

  • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

What’s with the funny posting schedule?

    • seems kinda standard to me

    • W.

? This went up at the usual time.

      • Death

        It’s hour earlier for us.

        • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

          No Wintertime for Ameri-can-cans?

          • W.

We haven’t fallen back yet. That’s next weekend.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

            Explains everything.

          • W.

Good! Man, I was so confused.

          • Ah crap. That’s this weekend? I just started biking to work again. : (

          • W.

Yessir. 2:00 am in Sunday, I think.

          • And its already in the 30s at night 🙁 🙁

          • It’s still hot as hell in Texas fortunately!

          • W.

It was 91 here on Sunday 🙁

          • Scrimm

Same here. I’m so happy I just bought a new hoodie that I’ll get to wear for two weeks.

          • Meh, I do physical labor… outside … so I’ve had enough of summer. bring on the snow so i can call out of work.

          • W.

I honestly want it to get cooler here.

          • Come vacay in the mountains, brah!

          • Which mountains do you hail from?

          • Blue Ridge/Appalachian mountains in the far edge of western NC

          • W.

Our friend Randall Thor hails from NC.

          • Respect.

          • Tyree

Fuck man! Same here, it’s supposed to get in the 20’s this weekend.

          • Tyree

            Embrace the void.

          • Stockhausen

I was reading through comments quickly, and thought you said something about a bikini at work.

          • Death

Ok, now we are not confused anymore.

        • M Shadows!

          knock knock!

          • Death

I am deaf and can’t hear you knocking.

          • M Shadows!

            punch punch!

          • Death

I am deaf and I can’t hear anything.

          • M Shadows!

well I punched you in the face so…

          • Death

I sue you for attacking me and breaking into my home.
You now have a restraining order. Stay away from me.

          • M Shadows!

what you don’t want to clean me?

          • Death

You have been imprisoned because you broke the restraining order.

          • M Shadows!

I have escaped and you have been arrested for entrapment and failure to comply with the buy hail to the king or be a loofah clause of statute 25 of the M Shadows rulebook

          • Death

Those are not real laws! You have been sentenced to death for breaking the law multiple times and making fake laws.

          • KJM

But you live in a fake country…

          • Death

            No, you’re a towel!

          • KJM

No, I’m a flying head that spits guns and ammo out of my mouth.

          • Death

            That sounds American.

          • KJM

And yet, Zardoz is a British movie.

          • Death

Oh Britain, you are full of surprises.

      • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

Usually it’s up at 17.00, yesterday and today it stuff went live at 16.00

    • Xan

The U.S. goes on daylight savings about two weeks later than Europe.

  • Streaming that new Bloodshot Dawn album, great stuff!

    • I have to listen to it at least once a day lol.

      • Lacertilian

I’m hoping for the best now, you mentioned Revocation and I’m completely enamored for Deathless, people compared Hammercult to them and I found them hit and miss.
So unless Bloodshot Dawn have a track called ‘We Are Bloodshot Dawn’ whilst trying to come across in a non-ironic way, it should be happy days.

  • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

The new Vesania is magnificent as are Beyond Creation and Haken. I’m completely okay with Anaal too.

  • SMOHLG

    G’damn, what an epic tuesday.

  • Also, does the toilet not have any nerds and history buffs like me who get boners for viking/folk/power stuff?

    • amon amarth?

      • mmmm i mean, i love amon amarth. i asked because no one’s said anything about the newest Einherjer up on that list there

        • W.

I think our man Xan is a fan of folk metal.

        • W.

But also, we are always looking for new contributors 😉

    • Guacamole Jim

I’ve got a soft spot for viking/folk stuff. Or a hard spot, if we’re referencing boners.

    • Xan

I’m a big fan of folk and power. I’m not sure what qualifies as viking metal as most of it is either pagan metal or melodic death metal. I’ve get a power metal list as long as Lexington Steele’s dick.

  • Had no idea Giant Squid was still a group. Pretty awesome stuff that they’ve put out.

    http://youtu.be/ZPhJo8_Gw_w

    • W.

      That’s from Metridium Fields

  • Just an FYI, MindMaze is prog/power and some of you nerds better jump on it, because it rules

  • Xan

I love that Bloodshot Dawn album cover. I get strong Mass Effect vibes from it. The new Beyond Creation album was excellent. The drums sounded so powerful over my speakers.

    • Fuckin’ Commander Shepard is the man

      • so you seem new-ish here… here’s my late welcome!
what’s your story if you don’t mind me asking?

        • Urrr, well I’ve been lurking/trolling MS for years (literally) and have posted under different names. I’ve lurked/trolled the toilet for a little while, too. I finally decided that you guys could use my input because . . . well, its invaluable, really. I believe that beards are a true measure of man, and that things should be heavy, and everyone should play video games. Also, cats.

          • good to meet you. with you on video games and cats. hard with.

          • Likewise. I like the toilet, its a little less full of shit (pun intended) than a lot of other places.

          • Also we’re looking for anyone interested in playing rounds of Sins of a Solar Empire over virtualLAN and we might be doing a Neverwinter Nights thing at some point.

          • Norfair Legend

I need a Destiny raid group but I only get on Friday and Saturday nights and am usually drunk but can hold my own. I am Souls’d out until Bloodbourne (Limited Edition already pre-ordered!)

I’m not a hater like so many others but From kinda killed their own game a bit…Or I just put way too many hours into Demon’s and Dark 1 that I need a break.

            PSN: Crucial_BarBQ
            Xbone: Norfair Legend
            Wii U: Swerve_City

I’ll be picking up CoD:AW this week on PS4…yeah, it’s CoD but I still have fun as long I mute everyone or play with friends.

            Picking up Smash Bros too

          • We’re addicts man, but I understand as far as Souls goes. My ps3 actually died and i’ve been without it for a couple weeks (the same day that Crown of the Ivory King came out, lol). Is Destiny as good as the hype? I wont be buying a PS4 until Bloodborne eomes out.

  • Mother Shabubu III

Hate to be a music snob, especially knowing how much these guys work on albums, etc, but “Desideratum” would have been killer as an EP/Mini album (Monstrum, Needful, Unyielding Despair, Idol, Sub Specie, Ita Mori).

PS: Regarding Giant Squid; is it more like the Centoes EP, or their older material?

  • Warheart

    Oh my…..finally, NEW SOLEFALD!!!!

  • Further Down the Metal Hole

    That is a ridiculously long list of new releases. R I D I C U L O U S!

  • Rebecca Blvck

Ugh…Abysmal Dawn, Beyond Creation, At The Gates AND Unearth?
