This Toilet Tuesday (10/26/15)

You pop open a pumpkin beer and sigh inwardly. Your friend promised this Halloween party would be a blowout, but thus far, it’s been a bit of a disappointment. You were looking forward to seeing what he was going to do in his big new house in the country, but the decorations are sparse and cheesy at best. There’s hardly anyone else here, either; just yourself and about ten other mutual friends. Your friend needs this, though. He’s grown more and more distant over the last year, and this is the first time in almost a month that he’s been actively social. Still, he’s usually had better taste than this. You step out of the kitchen and flag down your friend, who’s wearing a stereotypical slasher costume. “Where’s the bathroom? This is going straight through me,” you ask. He points you to a hallway with orange and black streamers hanging over the entrance. You step through and shake your head. Streamers.

The decorations on the other side prove to be much better. The hallway is dimly lit by a handful of candles, illuminating a series of small crooked portraits lining the walls. You inspect the closest one and grin; it’s a picture of the two of you from a trip you took last year, but both your faces have been scratched out. All the other portraits appear to be the same, featuring all the other guests, plus a handful who haven’t arrived yet. Looks like he’s got a haunted house planned. Now excited, you step into the bathroom at the end. The mirror has a single large dent in the center, as though it was punched. Maybe he really did go all out. You turn your focus to relieving yourself when you hear the door open behind you. “Hey, I’m-” you begin, but you’re cut off by a blow to the back of your head. Your face slams into the wall in front of you, and you drop to the floor. Reeling, you start to push yourself up. Before you can arise, your assailant takes a fistful of your hair and jerks your head back. Still dazed, you feel a tickle at your neck that abruptly bursts into white-hot pain. Blood sprays against the wall and floor, covering the toilet in brilliant crimson against the stark white porcelain. You clutch feebly at your throat and drop to the floor. “Nothing I ever did was good enough for you,” you hear your friend whisper in your ear. “Not for any of you pricks.” He pulls back on your hair again; you sputter and choke on your own blood. “Don’t worry, though; this isn’t the last anyone will see of you.” He holds a newly-sharpened hunting knife in front of you before pressing it into the incision on your neck and carving upwards. “I think your face will make a great mask.”

Bask in the bloodshed. This is Toilet Tuesday.

Abyssus – Into the Abyss (Memento Mori) [Death Metal]
Listen to “Those of the Unholy”

“Those of the Unholy” sounds like straight-up Obituary worship, but if you’re into that sort of thing, this should have everything you crave. Alternating rhythms, gravelly vocals that reek of the funk of 40,000 years, and a loose, jangly bass resembling the shambling gait of a monstrous zombie all work to make Abyssus a fun headbanger. FFO: Autopsy, Obituary, Massacre 10/31/15 (W.)

Saviours – Palace of Vision (Listenable Records) [Speed Metal]
Listen to “Burning Shrine”

I once saw Saviours in a dank bar with A Life Once Lost, Rwake, and High On Fire. That sounds like a pretty diverse bill that wouldn’t fit a band that thrashes as hard as Saviours, but if you press play on Palace of Vision, you’ll see how it all works. Saviours blend tasty riffs with a stoner buzz to create an excellent crossover between weed and speed certain to please heshers everywhere. FFO: High on Fire, Maleveller, The Sword 10/30/15 (W.)

Horrendous – Anareta (Dark Descent Records) [Death Metal]
Stream Review

As you’ve probably noticed, the hype for Horrendous’ new album Anareta is reaching critical mass. The crazy part? It’s warranted. The death metal trio have returned just a year after Ecdysis with a release that runs proggy circles around it while keeping their decidedly Swedish leanings. Grab your favorite pair of headphones and hail death. 10/30/15 (Leif Bearikson)

grave ritual

Grave Ritual – Morbid Throne (Dark Descent Records) [Death Metal]

OSDM feels like one of the most oversaturated subgenres in the metal world today, second only to black metal. Every week a new band pops up trying their hand at copying Severed Survival with little to no room for innovation. Luckily you don’t have to be innovative to be good, and Morbid Throne is good. It’s Grave Ritual’s first album in five years and it shows. The band sounds rejuvenated, laying down a thick and sludgy guitar assault with all of the bombastic drumming you expect from such an album. If you prefer your death metal rooted in the filth of the old ways, Morbid Throne is right up your alley. 10/30/15 (Leif Bearikson)

Tombstalker – Black Crusades (Shadow Kingdom Records) [Death/Thrash]

Sometimes, even I need to take a break from all the tech and just kill something. In desperate times like these, I turn to bands like Tombstalker. Part Entombed, part Bolt Thrower, and all crushing. Blasts and d-beats abound, and that classic buzzsaw tone cuts through everything. Reach out and hurt someone. 10/30/15 (Spear)

    • Spear

Likewise. I miss their old sound.

I just wanted something in the vein of Becoming, not a regular ol USBM album

  • I’ll take that new Hooded Menace thanks.

      Seconded on that

      • BRB jacking off to it on Spotify right nahw.

        • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

          • Based Potoo

The other one was Cheek’s new album?

          • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Hell naw, if I had I couldn’t have bought the super-cool tie-in magazine version.
Did you know it’s Chisu singing the chorus on AlphaOmega?
            Mind = Blown.

          • Based Potoo

I didn’t, since I haven’t hear any songs from it.

          • BEARD-SPLITTER

            Stupid bird

          • “The potoo is nature’s derpiest bird”

          • Based Potoo

Your taste in music is horrible, so you’d probably like Cheek.

          • BEARD-SPLITTER

            I like buttcheekz

          • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

          • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

It’s wicked good, man. For realz.

          • Based Potoo

          • Damn it. Too early here for me to be trying to type that shit into Google Translate.

          • Based Potoo

“I’m a man of humour but this is pure shit”
            Something along those lines

          • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

Something something tomatoes on Tay Tay’s pasta?

  • Ugly and raw blast-phemous desecration. Pure savagery! Dumb band name but whatever. My dick be crushed.

    • Disgustache

Have you been up on Death Breath yet? Ex-Entombed members making music that sounds like Entombed. Shit is pretty sick.

      • Oh yeah dude. They haven’t done shit in years though.

    • Dave Vincent’s Perm

Speaking of vermin, have you heard Vermin Womb?

  • Vote for Jeb

I’m assuming Black Crusades is a Warhammer thing, no?

  • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Grave Ritual also features members of Abysmal Lord.

    • I’m looking forward to that new Abysmal Lord album. Should be savage.

      • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

        Fuck yes dude!

    Nice bro

  • Tombstalker is good. I’m jamming with marmalade.

What a great day for DM today

  • KJM, Shake Zula

OT: Acid King were amazing last night. They made 75 minutes pass like 7 seconds. There’s nothing up from my show yet, but here’s a full set shot by Frank Huang AKA Pit Full Of Shit from Southwest Terrorfest.

  • dat Horrendous! are a hundred new bands going to come out and ape their style now?

    • Unless a big fucking comet crashes into Earth, “yes.”

    • Disgustache

If they copy the art style, though, I won’t be disappointed. That shit is sick, player.

    • Hubert

I wouldn’t blame them, Horrendous is doing shit right.

  • Disgustache

Got to see Red Fang on Friday. They played with a band out of Atlanta called Whores and a band from Washington called Wild Throne. Red Fang puts on a good show, and everyone there was really cool. I thank you for this This Toilet Tuesday. I hope to sift through the new music, to add to my huge list of new music to listen to.

    • Boss the Ross

I went 2 weekends back, killer show.

Whores. was good last time i saw em

    • Lacertilian

Red Fang played a few new ones when I saw them in April. Was a great show, funny dudes.

  • Ende is pretty rad. Killer artwork too. A lot of French black metal lately it seems.

    • There’s an obvious trend in French BM bands using German-language names. The irony is if you ever visit France nearly nobody will speak to you in anything but French even though they understand English and (near the Saarland) German.

      • I’ve heard a few horror stories from people about visiting France.

        • You’d think someone like me would feel at home amidst a bunch of assholes, but I only know enough français to be polite…which obviously won’t do at all.

          • Well, France is not one of my top places to visit anyways. So…

          • Based Potoo

I’ve been to Paris once. It was ok I guess. Nothing special about the city.

          • Sounds about right.

          • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

Which is better, that or Helsinki?

          • Based Potoo

Paris was ok, Helsinki is a parasite infested hell.

          • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

So, Helsinki was better to you?

          • Based Potoo

No. Helsinki is the worst place on earth.

          • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

Nope. That would be Flint or Detroit. Or of anyplace I’ve ever been, Kenosha, WI. It’s like the hick town in Stroszeck with a bit of the hick town from Maximum Overdrive.

          • Based Potoo

Flint is better than Helsinki. Beargod doesn’t live in flint

          • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

King 810 doesn’t live in Helsinki though.

          • Based Potoo

            You like King 810 thho

          • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

A bit. New stuff is pretty good, but the whole tough guy thing gets old pretty quick.

          • Ted Nü-Djent ™

Correct. The highlight of my time there was seeing the Venus De Milo and that was only so I could make a joke about this

        • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

My dad wasn’t exactly thrilled with France when he was stationed there.

        • Ted Nü-Djent ™

I learned what I needed to learn when I was in France:

Puis-je avoir une bière s’il vous plaît
Translation: Can I have a beer please.

  • p sure Twitching Tongues should be labeled lolbuttz.

    • The metallic hardcore tag is a bit generous.

      • Spear

There were bigger buttz to lol this week.

        • I’ll defer to you since you have to sift through all this every week.

    • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

All metalcore should be filed under lolbuttz.

  • Scrimm

    Definitely getting that Grave Ritual

  • Disgustache

Grave Ritual. “Rooted in the filth of the old ways.” Mongo like filth.

  • Guppusmaximus

Yea, I thought your throat should’ve been slit as well for being so shallow. It’s just some fucking Halloween decorations. If you’d just been a better friend then you’d still be alive. *smirk*

    Great Opener!!

  • Nyx is a German 2 piece all female black metal band.

    • Not really digging the material though.

    • Celtic Frosty

I came here to say I was looking forward to that one.

  • Maik Beninton™

Ophics, this sound is unheard of, pure lolbuttz worth its tag.

  • Boss the Ross

That is quite a list for this week…

Abyssus has the Obituary worship down, just look at that logo.

  • Much John Tardy influence in the Abyssus vocals?

    • Vote for Jeb

      Straight up worship, dude.

    • Guppusmaximus

Kinda reminds me of Kurt Bachman as well…

  • Guppusmaximus

“OSDM feels like one of the most oversaturated subgenres in the metal world today”

True…however Grave Ritual doesn’t have the groove, baby. It’s rather unfortunate because I kinda dig the vocals and the instrument tone is decent.

  • JWEG

Whoa. Draconian? That must be a typo – it felt like they’ve been teasing that for ages.

    It will be mine…

  • Maik Beninton™

I never thought I would say a big dead serious nope to something but Netherfell made me do it. What a time to be alive.

    • Based Potoo

      Hurdy-gurdy is officially metal!

Next is the Potoo warble sample

    • EAT

      • Maik Beninton™

And crab stances, no wonder people shit on core. (RFI)

        • RJA

I went and watched the video – so terrible that it is definitely worth watching – thanks.

          • Maik Beninton™

I’m always on the lookout for things like this.

          • RJA

I enjoy the terrible – between Netherfell and Ophicvs it was a great day!

        • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

Looks like they’re about to shit on something, alright! That or their hemorrhoids are flaring up something awful. And what the fuck is that guy on the right holding?!!? Is that the birdhouse he made in shop class?

      • Based Potoo
    • Spear

The kicker is that their preceding EP was actually good.

    • That might be the biggest pile of WTF I’ve ever seen.

  • Not sure what to think of Grey Heaven Fall. I think I like it. It’s kinda out there, but not bad. I don’t know.

    • Hubert

This is pretty fucking SKRONKy, good stuff. Production is not really my thing, doesn’t make the riffs less menacing though. Chewable/10

      • I thought of Dubya when I heard it. I’d be curious to hear more, I’m still on the edge with this.

        • track you posted gave me a Deathspell Omega feel, which is possibly the best feel

        • Based Potoo

          Of glory?

    • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

      Hey, dis gud.

    • Vote for Jeb

      That was rad.

  • I am digging that Black Crusades, Spear.

Also, I am eating a gyro for lunch… currently feeling Cultured/10.

    • Based Potoo

I ate goulash soup. Fucking tasty it was!

      • NICE, BIRDO

      • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

Gulag soup should be a thing.

    • give Lost Soul a shot, i think it can be filed under “shared taste betwixt GL and JJM”

      • Listening to Horrendous atm, will do after that. I AM ALWAYS UP FOR A GOOD BETWIXT-ING.

      • I am not sure if last weeks rec of Thy Catafalque will ever be toppled!

        • Based Potoo

Have you given the new Killing Joke album a listen?

          • Never heard of them, Can u provide the link?

          • Based Potoo

The whole thing can be found on spoopify and youtubs. Dis is my fav song from the album

          • You know what I like about this? When they start a riff and groove, they stick with it. It really lets the listener digest and appreciate what they are trying to achieve. I feel like this mimics exactly what Thy Catafalque achieved with their recent release. Know what I mean?

          • Based Potoo

Wouldn’t be surprised if Killing Joke has influenced Thy Catafalque. They’re quite the band.

          • Seriously, 15 albums!?? Nuts. I promise they are new to me. Interesting that they don’t sound like old ppl considering they have been around as long as they have…

          • Based Potoo

It’s pretty cool that there are still some old bands that are able to release amazing albums late into their careers. Swans is another band like that.

          • RFI FOR SWANS

          • Based Potoo
          • much dank!

          • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

The Residents too, even after so many fucking albums.

          • Based Potoo

I haven’t listened to their latest albums. Not Available is still their best imo.

          • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

Not sure if they have any new ones right now, but I’d be surprised if they don’t.

          • Ted Nü-Djent ™
          • i’m also new to the band, definitely a good!

          • Based Potoo

            They’re a fantastic bandddddddd.

          • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

And one of those rare bands that’s always been consistent after several decades. Jaz is still raging with the energy of a 20 year old.

          • Óðinn

You’ve gotta love bands that have been around for a long time, but still turn out good shit. Killing Joke have been around longer than most too.

          • more beer

37 years is certainly impressive that they are still putting out good music.

          • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

Feel it in my butt and in my hole, I get Spoopifieeeeeeeeeeed.

          • Óðinn
          • Vote for Jeb

            AMG gave it 5/5.

          • Based Potoo

I noticed. I agree with the rating.

          • As long as it wasn’t Pitchfork, with Holy Rhymes 1st Place.

          • Oily Kung Fu Bologna Riot

I honestly thought they couldn’t possibly top the last 3 CDs, but I was proven oh so wrong. This is their best one since Pandemonium.

          • Óðinn

Really? Who reviewed it though? I’ll head over there right now.

….Edit: It was a Grymm review. I generally trust his opinion. I’ll have to check this album out.

          • Ted Nü-Djent ™

Only Ray Van Horn Jr reviews are real

          • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

And even AMG himself remarked thusly: “whut?”

          • These guys? Sounds pdope, my bird friend. It is rocking for sure

          • Based Potoo

            These guys indeed.

          • i’m in love with this track, the 80’s feels man

          • Based Potoo

Dis probably gonna be my AOTY

          • Lacertilian
