Welcome once more to This Toilet Tuesday! The waxing of autumn seems to bring metal bands out of the woodwork, and this week’s list is characteristically heavy. Karhu and Dumpster Lung have picked out some mighty fine jams for you, but there’s plenty more after that. Check it out and share some tunes with the class.

Caïnan Dawn – F.O.H.A.T. (Osmose Productions) [Black Metal]
S.L.O.R.I.D.E.

Brooding. Aggressive. Accelerating. Ominous. Descending. New Cainan Dawn is some of the better black metal released in 2017, courtesy of the Frenchmen. 10/27/17 (Karhu)

Chainsaw (GRC)- Filthy Blasphemy (Diabolic Might/Vulkan/Unholy Forces) [Thrash/Speed Metal]
Stream

This particular Chainsaw, who hail from Greece (because not only are there multiple bands named Chainsaw, there are even 2 with releases coming out this Friday), play non-stop thrash that sounds like a mix of classic Venom with the intensity and aggression of German thrash, such as early Sodom or Kreator. I wouldn’t go so far as to call them black/thrash though, despite that being what my mind usually jumps to when Venom is cited as an influence. The vocals are a gruff shout, and there’s a lot of tremolo picking, but Filthy Blasphemy just feels like grimy speed metal more than anything else. You’ll probably feel some very early Slayer influence in spots too, particularly in the tons of rapid tom fills all over the place. The production is excellent as well, with a tightness and clarity that only emphasizes the speed of the riffs without losing impact. The bass is also deliciously audible throughout, which is always a huge plus in my book. Bottom line: These guys shred. 10/28/17 (Dumpster Lung)

Dr. Living Dead! – Cosmic Conqueror (Century Media Records) [Crossover Thrash]
Listen to “Cosmic Conqueror”

If you told me there’s a band that sounds a whole lot like Iron Reagan, and that the title track of their new album sounds like them mixed with Slayer, I’d probably need to call a medical doctor instead of listening to Dr. Living Dead, because my resulting erection would surely last longer than 4 hours and start to become a problem. That being said. . . it’s a manageable chub for me at the moment. Dr. Living Dead! does indeed riff pretty hard, and the production and all that also sounds great, but there are some clean vocals in the other single, “Terror Vision” that, judging by the last couple releases, will likely be present throughout the whole album, that I’m a bit unsure of right now. If you’re familiar with IR’s last album, the singer for DrLD actually contributed guest vocals on one track (the kind of odd, higher pitched ones in the song “Megachurch”). I really wasn’t sure about those vocals at first, but then I grew to love them. It’s such a small dose of them in that particular instance though, and I think the vocals themselves just sound better there than the ones I’ve heard today, so it’s hard to say if I’ll end up loving that sound in this context where it’s so much more emphasized. Still, to their credit, that’s one unique trait they have that helps them stand out from the rest of the crossover scene, and they’re not awful by any means, just more of an acquired taste, and one I think I probably will acquire in time. I wouldn’t discourage anyone from checking these guys out, but I think those vocals may be a bit divisive. 10/27/17 (Dumpster Lung)

        ZANGED ‘EM

    • Dumpster Lung

I don’t know what the occasion is (did you just get into ’em, maybe?), but 100% BACKED.

I got one of the main riffs from Crimson stuck in my head the other day, so I listened to that album 2 1/2 times back-to-back (did a lot of driving that day, too).

      • GrumpDumpus

NAW I BEEN ON THE SWANÖ EXPRESS SINCE ’98 I THINK EOS ON THE TIP OF MY BRAIN SINCE LAST YEAR’S WITHERSCAPE REMINDED ME THAT HIS OUTPUT BEATS EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME AND I’M TRYING TO WRITE MUSIC SO IF I SUBLIMINALLY RIP OFF SOMEONE IT SHOULD AT LEAST STILL BE HIGH QUALITY

        • Dumpster Lung

          Again. . . . .100% BACKED.

Witherscape rules, too. It was also through an interview last year about the new Witherscape album that I found out about the reissue of Moontower (and also Nightingale) that finally happened this summer, and was the first actual thing I ever did here (emailing the news to ’em for one of the Monday articles).

I still regularly jam both Witherscape albums, but especially the first.

          • GrumpDumpus

THE FDR VERSION OF NORTHERN SANCTUARY THAT CAME IN THE DELUXE PACK MADE ME CRY TEARS OF JOYOUS WONDER AT HOW GOOD IT SOUNDS AND THEN MADE ME CRY OF SORROW WHEN I REALIZED HOW MANY OTHER ALBUMS WILL NEVER BE TREATED WITH SUCH SONIC INTEGRITY

  • Joaquin Stick

    Lookin’ forward to Ne Obliv.

  • “wut”

    “nuffin”

  • Howard Dean

The Greek Chainsaw: Runs on souvlaki and austerity. Would buy.

  • I somehow missed new Cormorant.

    It’s really nice

    • Dubby Fresh

That came out over two months ago, You’re the worst gatekeeper.

  • Howard Dean

What the fuck is a slabdragger? Is that like a Crossfit technique where bros harness themselves to chunks of concrete or something?

    • Brutalist_Receptacle

“Chunks of concrete”: What Mrs_Receptacle and I call the kids.

    • Dumpster Lung

That actually is a badass name, though. If it was a crossfit exercise it’d have some girl name like Sally.

  • Brutalist_Receptacle

  • God

A big fuck yes on that forgotten tomb!

  • Rolderathis

New Communic hmm? I remember when Waves of Visual Decay came out, that shit was lit back in 2006. I wonder how the years have treated them…been a long time.

  • Rolderathis

Chainsaw art looks like the lovechild of Hieronymus Bosch and Seagrave, very cool!

    • Dumpster Lung

It does, and I love it!
