This Toilet Tuesday (10/11/16)

Welcome once more to Toilet Tuesday! Unfortunately, this week is a little on the rough side. There are certainly some solid releases in here, but they’re small islands of purity in a sea of crap. W and I have picked out a couple of the better ones, but there are a few more albums worth looking into in that list down there. Proceed with caution, friends.

Botanist/Oskoreien – EP3: Green Metal / Deterministic Chaos (split- Avantgarde Music) [Plant Metal/Black Metal]
Listen to “Without You I’m Nothing” (Oskoreien), “Dracula Vampira” (Botanist)

Splits that feature complementary extremes are the best kind of splits, and Deterministic Chaos / Green Metal certainly delivers. On this particular partnership, Oskoreien plays the part of emotional climax and heavy atmosphere perfectly. A bit meandering, true, but Valena’s banshee wails suit the feeling of aimlessly wandering through a caustic fog perfectly. In stark contrast, Botanist’s hammered-dulcimer black metal is a joyous rapture of nature shaking forth its bonds and going for a walkabout in a warm clime. It’s all bright riffs, glowing tone, and rippling percussion that sounds like cleansing rain. It’s oddly happy for a “black metal” release, but I dig it mightily. FFO: Pyracantha, Chemical Cascades, Alcest 10/15/16 (W.)

Départe – Failure, Subside (Season of Mist) [Black/Death Metal]
Listen to “Vessel,” “Grief Echoes (Golden Scars),” “Ruin”

DSBM artists seem to think that the key to conveying despair is warbling pathetically in a weak falsetto over dull, repetitive riffs. Départe is everything that so many of those bands aren’t; interesting, honest, convincing. This sounds like depression feels; a thick, numbing haze choking out any sense of vibrancy or hope. The throat-shredding vocals and subtle but powerful bass are your path through the fog, the connecting points between the generally sparse waypoints of percussion. Hit play on this one and follow me into the gray. 10/14/16 (Spear)

  • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

How is Darkthrone still even considered black metal anymore?

    • Señor Jefe El Rosa

Wait a few hours and we’ll talk about it

      • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

New Lady Beast is promising, I forgot it was already coming out.

  • Joaquin Stick

I always like to check out the lolbuttz because I apparently hate myself. This might be the worst one in awhile.

    • Spear

You can go up one from that for something that’s equally bad.

      • Joaquin Stick

I don’t think I have any soul left. I watched the vampires one for three seconds and now I feel like a husk of a human. She was wearing far too little clothing for how scary she is. Give me a few hours to regen my mana and I’ll try that one lol.

        • NDG

The vampire one is mind blowingly bad. As is Sonic Syndicate.

I always try and imagine what rehearsal and the songwriting process is like for bands like this.

    • Eliza

I remember that some YouTube commenter on a Cradle of Filth video mentioned that band as a similar band. After hearing what they sound like, I have gained a while new level of appreciation for CoF.

      • YouTube comments bring only pain.

      • ME GORAK™✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

        • Did you liked it, Gorak?

          • ME GORAK™✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

        • Eliza

Awesome. I like that album a lot.

  • slipjackthewanderer

That Departe is so damn good…

  • Elegant Gazing Globe

Can’t wait for mailmanbro to deliver that Darkthrone record. got the ship notification the other day

    • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Have you listened to whole album?

      • Whole lot of mid-paced “Meh” IMO. Deep Lake Tresspass rules butts though.

        • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

That’s like they’re best song in a looooong time too. But not worth purchasing the album.

          • Nope. I have all the Darkthrone I’ll ever need on my shelf at home.

        • Elegant Gazing Globe

          I kinda like that

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

            Then, you’ll be in luck.

      • Elegant Gazing Globe

not listening till it’s on my turntable

  • Joaquin Stick

Ooh, didn’t know there was an Anciients stream. Really liking this so far. Lot of new range, including a heavier side.

  • Hey, we got new Darkthrone, Wormrot, and Ophidius, it can’t be a total bust.

    • Spear

Maybe not the worst week ever, but I’m pretty site Eden’s Curse has left a festering hole in my brain.

      • Oh come now.

That Sonic Syndicate was WAY worse.

        • Is Sonic Syndicate still active? geeezzzz…

          • Right? I thought they’d have like 4 years tops being active.

        • Kevin Nash’s Jackknife

They’ve been around since 2002? I’m sure the new In Flames will be better though that’s not really that hard to do.

  • This Age of Woe sounds more like sludge than hardcore tinged DM to my ears.

    • Still haven’t heard this. Hoping to rectify today (Noice Disqus BTW!)

  • HessianHunter

So far this new Black Table joint is exactly what I want from that band. Into it.

    • Joaquin Stick

      Dang, this is good.

  • Señor Jefe El Rosa

Anyone have thoughts on new Red Fang so far? The few songs released have grabbed me too much

    • Abradolf Lincler

i swear, ive seen them a couple times, and every time they are in town now i just skip it

      • I’ve seen em twice. Sort of bland, but enjoyable nonetheless.

        • Abradolf Lincler

still amped about new antaeus, makes me want to order an Antaeus patch for my vest

          • Same duder. That band is fucking fierce!

          • Abradolf Lincler

satanic warmaster, mgla, and BAN patches plus my studs will be here today, alternate back patch (Mutiilation) and some other patches at the end of the week or early next week.

          • Oh fuck! That sounds like a mean battle jacket. Here’s the perfect soundtrack to sew that shit with.

          • Abradolf Lincler

!!!! i still only own CYFAWS on vinyl

      • Señor Jefe El Rosa

I like their first 3 and their show was fun as hell, but these songs are just kinda there.

  • So far, for today, Darkthrone and Anciients are what is interesting for me this week.

    Thanks, Spearrow and Dubs!

  • Kevin Nash’s Jackknife

The new Grim Reaper comes out in the US this week. It’s already out elsewhere but it’s not out here yet.

  • Kevin Nash’s Jackknife

Also have any of you heard the new Helstar album? It’s so good. It’s a return to form and will probably be on my top 10 with the new Flotsam and Jetsam.

  • Maik Beninton™

    I like that Départe.

  • Waynecro

Azooma and Ophidius aren’t too shabby, and I’m jazzed about the new Wormrot. Also, Vomit of Doom is a great band name.

  • EsusMoose

Sonic syndicate is 3 levels of fart noises beyond human hearing
