Opeth are continuing the trend of bands aligning themselves with the craft beer movement by releasing their second beer. I’ll take a promo and do a full review if you’re listening, Northern Monk Brew Company.

Opeth beer

  • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

    I want Opeth beer.

    • I bet it changes styles of beer multiple times through the experience

      • and claims the previous flavor each prior batch wasn’t any good

      • I’ll take it black, please and thank you.

        • the last bit of the beer goes from a stout to an IPA without warning

          • Bitter.

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

I wouldn’t mind that at all!

          • That’s some Willy Wonka shit right there.

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

That would give me great satisfaction.

          • Dubs

I would mind it quite a bit. I only like IPAs on rare occasions.

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

I like IPAs alot, but stouts and porters are my favorite.

          • Stouts and porters for me all day Ross!

          • Dubs

A Deuce after my own heart.

          • Good man.

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

Yes. Do you have any favorites you’d like to share?

          • Du Claw’s Sweet Baby Jesus – a chocolate peanut butter porter and it’s good and strong 6.8%. The also make an imperial stout called For Pete’s Sake that is equally good at 9%.

Riverhorse Oatmeal Milk Stout or Chocolate Porter are very good as well.

          • So many IPA’s these days just destroy your palate.

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

Yes they do. There are a decent amount that don’t, but still deliver the hops.

          • Lacertilian

            Good.

          • Boss pls!

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

            Randall plz! I like beer!

          • Joaquin Stick

Sixpoint’s C.R.E.A.M is kinda like that, but the other way. It looks and kinda smells like an IPA, but tastes more like a coffee stout. Isgood.

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

I will keep an eye out.

I’ve had some black IPAs that do the trick.

        • Dave Vincent’s Perm
    • Count_Breznak

It prolly tastes like soda, but when you complain Michael will tell you that you are narrow minded.

      • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

        Hahaha!

      • Hubert

        “I never really liked beer”

        • …over the course of years, the recipe slowly transforms from a beer into a dry red wine…

      • Dave Vincent’s Perm

“I always thought beer was holding me back. I guess I thought beer fans were more open minded.”

    • PostBlackenedWhaleGaze

Like Behemoth’s beer, seems impossible to obtain unless you live within 50 miles of the damn brewery.

      • Yeah, seems sort of silly. You see these bands promoting their beer all over the internet but I’ve yet to see a bands branded beer or taste one.

        • Dubs

*cough*Please deliver to Texas, Three Floyds*cough*

          • Again with the Three Floyds! I want to go to there man.

          • Dubs

Same. It’s been a while since I visited Chicago. May need to make a trip up there sometime soon.

          • Hell yes, the metal scene there is down right ridiculous too.

          • more beer

I’ve drank a couple of their beers. They were good. But I think we have local beers that are as good. Plus the only time I see them is when they do some sort of promotion or show with Trve Brewery.

          • Trve Brewery… Another brewery on my list.

          • more beer

If you make it to Trve we shall get very drunk!

          • PostBlackenedWhaleGaze

Went to Colorado in October and of course had to stop at Trve. All their beer was delicious.

          • more beer

Yes I like their beers as well as Black Sky’s beers. The one thing I don’t like about Trve is they don’t serve food.

          • PostBlackenedWhaleGaze

Trve. And considering a lot of their beers are pretty strong I would totally buy some food there.

          • more beer

Yea hopefully they will fix that in the future.

          • Rob M

Thats because they really dont distribute for shit…if you live outside Chicago you really cant find their stuff

          • more beer

I looked at their distribution. It isn’t very far reaching. But we have plenty of good brewers in Colorado.

          • Rob M

Yeah…Ive got a few buddies who live out that way who tell me the same. MD dosnt have a huge number of great local breweries, but they make up for it by having a good number of breweries distribute through here. We dont get everything that Id like to try, but its better than most

          • more beer

It could be worse you could be in Virginia.. Which is among the worst places in the country for beer. We are definitely spoiled here.

          • Rob M

I’d take anywhere over Utah. Have a good friend who lives there and their distribution is shit. Unless youre a decent sized brewery, with some money behind you, its nearly impossible to get into that state. For the most part theyre stuck with the local stuff. (at least Uinta is a decent brewery)

          • more beer

I like the Uinta BaBa black lagers. But Utah being the home of the Mormon Church ruins that state. It’s almost like fun is against the law there.

          • Rob M

That black lager is top notch…they make a couple of good IPA’s and a decent stout as well.

Youre dead on about the church though, theyve got their hands in everything out there…really does a number on that state

          • more beer

The shit with the church there. Is never going to change.

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

Same with Malort. Now that shit will put some hair on your chest (and slaughter your taste buds)! Can’t find it outside of Chicago, though.
Three Floyds is decent, but not really my thing. Because, fancy and shit.

          • Rob M

Wasnt familiar with Malort, but after looking into it, I think I’ll avoid it.

Cant speak much to 3 Floyds beer as Ive never had it, but I know both Zombie Dust and Darklord still seem to get everyones panties in a twist when they come out.

Im perfectly happy with the selection Ive got out here though…have plenty of above average to excellent beers to choose from on a pretty regular basis

          • Simon PhoenixKing Rising

I would love to try Darklord out of all the Three Floyds to be honest.

Until then, I’m content with good ol Southern Tier brewery.

          • Rob M

I definitely wouldnt mind trying it, but much like BCBS, people tend to act like its the nectar of the gods…Personally, Im good with with a 4-pack of Old Rasputin or something similar.

Havent had too many from Southern Tier, just not a brewery I reach for very often, but I like their 2x Stout and Warlock is awesome

        • the best instance i’ve seen is Iron Maiden beer in package liquor stores in St. Louis. then again, IM is pretty big.

          • They had the IM beer at the Crowbar show I went to a couple weeks ago. 4.7% is a little weak for my preferences. Tasted pretty good though.

        • PostBlackenedWhaleGaze

          Here’s what I’ve had:
Iron Maiden’s beer. Both versions, the regular one and the slightly stronger “666” version, still pretty bland though imo.
Mastodon’s beer. Decent, but tame, even for a kellerbier.
That’s it (I think). I’ve wanted to try all the stuff 3 Floyds has brewed for bands like Amon Amarth and Pelican, but we hardly ever get them down here. Think it was a fluke when I had one of their beers at this punk/metal bar in town.

      • Simon PhoenixKing Rising

I generally think of band name beers as similar to signature guitars. Fine for the artist, but ranging from meh to outright fucking awful to everyone else.
Maybe Brohemoth’s beer tastes good. I’m not holding my breath though.

        • PostBlackenedWhaleGaze

It’s got a 3.09/5 on ratebeer.com, so reviews range from okay to meh.

    • Spear

      Pale ale though. Bleh.

      • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

        Hating on Pale Ales?

        • Spear

          Stouts or death.

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

Stouts won’t quench thirst on a hot and humid summer day.

          • Rob M

            Thats what Bocks are for

          • 16oz canned Troegenator plz and thank you.

          • Rob M

Drank so many of those things at last years MDF they put me off bocks for a couple months

          • My buddy got so hungover from them last year. He drank em like water the one day.

          • Feel like this is low hanging fruit, but, here goes…

            FUCK HANGOVERS.

          • Yup.

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

I feel like I’m having one right now (bad reaction to some MSG I had earlier), and GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!

          • Rob M

I believe it…somewhere between Vallenfyre taking the stage and Master finishing their set, I have only vague impressions of what happened on the first day.

          • So it goes man. So it goes.

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

You sir, are correct. But I do enjoy the nice hop and light finish of a pale ale

          • Rob M

I like Pale Ales/IPA’s as well…took me longer to get a taste for hoppy beers but now I actually really like them

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

            Nice, glad you came around.

          • Rob M

Yeah, I still probably reach for porters/stouts more often, but youre right when you say theres nothing better on a hot day than a Pale Ale

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

That’s the way to do it.

          • Spear

But they’re delicious. For real though, I’ll drink just about anything other than pale ales. I think it’s the aftertaste that kills it for me.

          • I’ll drink every pale you don’t want. Just ship them to the PO Box.

          • Spear

I’ve been opening them all up and pouring them out. Mind if they’re shipped in baggies?

          • Mailmanbro might prefer it

          • Dubs

What about resealed cans of RC Cola?

          • Spear

If putting scotch tape over the opening counts as resealing, then sure.

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

            Please share.

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

            They are delicious indeed.

            Fair enough.

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

Well, technically, alcohol dehydrates you, so……………..

          • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

First ingredient to good beer is good water.

I find RYM more reliable for genres most of the time, since it is actively voted on by the users and not put up by whoever gets on MA first

They have a pinch of it in there, like their biological fathers Wintersun.

  • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

    A) Whispered power metal?
    B) This is something that has begun to rile me a lot lately. Supergroups. They aren’t supergroups, we know – expect them to suck. Yet the majority if us refuses to acknowledge this thoroughly. Cream was a supergroup – everybody had carved themselves a piece before the band was formed, but that’s what it was, a band. Everybody’s focus from the first day to the last.

These are no supergroup’s, they are side-projects. Language guides our thought patterns and internal schemes, acknowledging their status as such will eventually lead into a different perspective.

    • Supergroups to me are usually “4 dudes with different writing styles try to release album, ends up using none of their styles and sucking”

      • case in point: Vhol

        • Uh, do you have ears? that’s a rare example of it working

          • j/k, Vhol is a good.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus™

            “do you have ears”

            Let me check…

      • RustyShackleford

SERIOUSLY yo all the press releases will be like “IT’S GONNA SOUND LIKE ALL 4 OF THESE COOL BANDS IN ONE” and no it usually just sounds like if those 4 dudes (or lady dudes perhaps) formed a different band and it probably isn’t as good.

      • Dubs

Supergroups, in their promotion, rarely feel like more than a cynical cash grab.

        • Blast em!

          • Dubs

            No!

          • Edward/Breegrodamus™

I’m glad it occurred to me you had a new look.

          • Dubs

I am the lone locust of the apocalypse. Think of me when you look to the night sky.

        • Edward/Breegrodamus™

There have to be a few more good ones though.

          • i think i have the solution:
when a supergroup sets out to go above and beyond what is typically expected from a supergroup, they can include the code word “super srs this time” in their promotional material. that way the people will know.

        • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

I tend to think this may be more a problem on the end of the label/magazines/blogs etc. than the actual groups. Though no doubt some are to be blamed themselves.

    • more beer

You sir are correct. They are side projects. I have said that before myself. The term supergroup gets thrown around way too much.

    • Pentagram Sam

What you said about Cream being a BAND rings true. I think the problem with alot of supergroup bands is that there’s no evolution. They break off from all their main bands to form a project and release something, but then it’s nigh impossible to get em all back again to write for a followup. Unless it’s basically one dude that writes everything and gets his cool buddies that happen to be in other high profile bands, supergroups usually fizzle out.

A completely non metal example of one that not only works but spearheaded an entire movement tho is WET. A Melodic Rock / AOR group, it has Robert Sall (main songwriter and guitarist from Work of Art) “W” on keys, Erik Martennson (singer/guitarist/ songwriter from Eclipse) “E” and Jeff Scott Soto from a shitload of cool as shit but the “T” in WET comes from Talisman.

Their debut came out in 2009 and was a melodic bombshell that revitalized that scene. Bands like HEAT got more exposure and Work of Art and Eclipse have gone on to be more recognized as leaders in the genre. They did put out another cool ass album three years ago and a live album, so hopefully there’s a third one soon.

EDIT: For metal relevance, would BLOODBATH be considered a supergroup?

    • Janitor Jim Duggan

Blind Faith is also a good supergroup.

      • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

        Traveling Wilburys.

        • Janitor Jim Duggan

          Exactly.

    • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

      Dunsmuir is good so far.

    • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

They’ve definitely got a power metal vibe, a la Wintersun and Ensiferum, no doubt.

      • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Perhaps. Though neither Wintersun, nor Ensiferum are power metal.

        • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

Has that epic feel to it, though, which I guess could be taken as power metal to some, I suppose.

  • RustyShackleford

I REALLY dig that BTBAM poster. Bloodstock is looking pretty fucking stacked agreed, but damn I just really wouldn’t wanna see Twisted Sister. Don’t get me wrong I love their classic stuff and I’m from the city so it’s cool their from Long Island and shit but…just nope lol.

  • I refuse to care about AC/DC or Guns & Roses in this, the year of our lord 2016.

    • Joaquin Stick

      This is the correct response.

    • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

I only care about AC/DC’s health.

      • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

I only care about the next The Darkness CD, which is what AC/DC should’ve become instead of 30+ years of Back In Black Part 2.

    • heathen! banish this man to the small town in which he grew up (before moving to a cool city). your scarlet letter shall be a REO Speedwagon 2015 Tour shirt.

          I’m serious though.

          • Hubert

I guess you’re right. Millions of people still care about boh groups.

          • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

Yes but millions of people still care about: Americas got talent, The Voice, Faux News, The Donald, American Idol, BW3’s, Disney theme parks etc.

          • let me get this straight: does BW3 == Buffalo Wild Wings? cause if so… bite your tongue mister!

The piles and piles of unsold copies of Chinese Democracy that Best Buy had to dispose of would seem to indicate the opposite.

Also, you know you’ve hit peak relevance when you sign an exclusive distribution contract with Wal-Mart.

        • Janitor Jim Duggan

I owned two copies of Chinese Democracy. They have a copy at Christmas Tree Shops as well. It just sits there.

          • CyberneticOrganism

Lol, please get a picture of that for me.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

            I will.

        • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

I forget where does the Wal-Mart deal fall in the chronology of the washed up rock band? Between the Superbowl medley and Vegas residency which comes first?

          • Dubs

Well, AC/DC hasn’t been offered a Vegas residency yet, so I guess before that.

          • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

            Makes sense thanks.

          • Janitor Jim Duggan

Journey and the Eagles had it. Same with REO.

            the WM partnership is smart

          • Dubs

Oh, from a business perspective, this makes a ton of sense. JJD wasn’t arguing that tho. He was talking about importance, i.e. relevance to the greater music world.

          • BALLS ROLL

I agree that GnR has no relevance to the current state of musical creativity, and it’s progression from here, however from a inspirational and heritage standpoint, they are, and always will be a Rock N Roll monolith.

          • Dubs

Undoubtedly. I still love Appetite for Destruction.

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

He sounds like a high pitched ‘It’s Pat’ nowadays.

          • I think that gets to the heart of it. It’s all about that sweet nostalgia cash. Hard for me to get excited about a bunch of fat old men pretending to be their younger selves for a handful of shows.

          • CyberneticOrganism

Hard to say no to piles of cash

And Slash is looking at the prospect of paying his now ex-wife alimony for the rest of her life (under CA law) and ridiculous amounts of child support, on top of the 50/50 split, so the timing of all this on his end isn’t exactly coincidental.

Moral of the story: Don’t get married in CA, kids!

          • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

Or sleep with 50,000 other women while on the road without a prenup that allows for it?

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

That too! After he’s done pleasuring Axl backstage.

          • Stockhausen

But bro, there might be rockin’ involved. I think ACDC has mentioned rockin’ once or twice or a dillion times in a song or two or all.

        • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

I dunno, AC/DC was smart in knowing how rabid their fans at Walmart can be, especially on the way to grab Hungry Man Dinners, 48 packs of Mountain Dew Code Red, Stone Cold shirts, and Larry The Cable Guy TV dinners on the way to the CD section.

          • Dubs

Yah, but knowing your target demographic isn’t the same as being relevant to the greater music world at that point in your career.

          • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

            Quite true.

    • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

I’m old as dirt and I cant take it anymore…make them stop please.

    • BALLS ROLL

I think that his joining AC DC is a smart move. This is going to be the warm up and conditioning he needs to be able to deliver the goods when GnR hits the road in June. There is so much money on the line(not even Springsteen does stadium tours), and expectations are going to be so high, that if they shit the bed on this tour, the black eye on the GnR reputation will never heal. I think that everyone in GnR is old enough now to understand that.

      • Pentagram Sam

This is a really good anal-sys. I’m just wishin I could be…FLY ON THE WALL in their backstage to see how Axl takes orders from Angus and also if they can come out on time. But hey, if this does get Axl’s gears up and running and he ain’t pushy, then it could be a fire under his ass for GNR

I own a Gibson SG and therefore am required by law to know how to play the main riff from “Back in Black.” Other than that, I have no interest in AC/DC. And I never cared for Guns ‘N’ Roses.

I saw Paradise Lost at Roadburn, they were fucking great. Their frontman is a cool dude.

  • Rob M

Man, that Bloodstock lineup is pretty rough…

..new Eternal Khan is awesome news though

    • The site seeing at that fest would bring more entertainment for me than the actual bands.

      • Rob M

Agreed…and at least thats something to do before and after Paradise Lost plays

        • Haha, yeah and you know there are going to be lots of high school Behemoth fans wearing shitty looking corpse paint too.

If Communion Pale Ale is anything like the album, it’ll be flat, watery, bland and leave a bitter aftertaste (especially for anyone who’s ever liked Opeth in the first place and longs for their retreat from coffeehouse prog).

    • They’s good. Seen them live a few times and it’s been great every time.

      • Without sounding too cliche, I like their tone. Lol.

      • Also, new HLB is totes great.

    • Joaquin Stick

They are good at what they do. I listen to their last album every few months to satisfy some weird itch that I don’t know why I have.

  • Guppusmaximus

Personally, I think Opeth missed the mark (album wise too but that’s a tired debate). If you’re going to release a coffee-table book then you should present a vintage wine NOT canned piss IPA or even a stout.

  • Xinen

Thanks for the headsup on Whispered, glad to know there is new stuff coming out.

    Bloodstock looks fucking shite.
