The Monday Press: Alcest, Meshuggah, Psalm Zero, and More!

Fresh from the streets after begging passersby for extra weekend minutes, I am here to deliver The Monday Press. Hopefully at least one of these bits of news will help get you through the grind.

Masters of dreamy blackish shoegaze, Alcest, have announced a new album due this fall, and also a large European Tour with the Japanese instrumental post-rock band Mono starting in October.

Alcest Tour

Meshuggah is back in the studio and they released a short clip of “studio footage” (it’s really not worth watching) on their facebook page. Unrelated, and far less interesting, a new cafe in Kansas City just opened called Meshuggah Bagels, and it has nothing to do with metal whatsoever [Meshuggah is derived from the Yiddish word for “crazy,” so they were probably going for “Crazy Bagels.” – W.].

Iced Earth will be headlining MTV’s Headbangers Ball tour this year.

A really weird thing called Fest 15, or maybe it is just called The Fest, I have no idea (bad marketing),  in Gainsville, FL announced their first round of bands. It’s an… interesting lineup to say the least. Mostly trash, but also Propagandhi and Iron Regan?

Akercocke released a new song on Sunday.

  • Experimetal group, Psalm Zero, has a new album coming this July called Stranger to Violence. Check out the full press release here.
  • Carcass is going on a tour all over the US with Crowbar, Ghoul, and Night Demon starting in July. Check out the dates here.
  • Vader has a new album, entertainingly called The Empire, that is coming in September according to their Facebook page.
  • Southwest Terror Fest in Tuscon, AZ has has a complete lineup now. Acts include Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Pig Destroyer, and two Aaron Turner projects that aren’t Isis.
  • My man-crush, Daniel Gildenlöw of Pain of Salvationannounced that the new album will be called In the Passing Light of Day, and is a return to their heavier roots. I feel like bands say that a lot and don’t deliver, so I am skeptical, but excited.
  • Ghost Bath merch for Moonlover is going back on sale soon after being sold out for awhile. Nuclear Blast is restocking and taking pre-orders that will be released on June 10th. I think there might be a bonus track too.
  • Candlemass has a new EP coming June 3rd called Death Thy Lover, stream the title track here.
  • Progressive post-hardcore band The Fall of Troy is giving out their new album, OK, for free and going on a massive world tour. Dates and link to download are here.

  • MTV’s Headbangers Ball tour?

is that show still on the air?

    • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

MTV does anything music related nowadays?

      • Eliza

        Shocking, to say the least.

    • Eliza

I know, right? Is it still a thing?

    • Joaquin Stick

I was super confused by the whole thing, but I know some people here like IE so I thought… I guess this is interesting news?

    • CyberneticOrganism

You mean they haven’t re-tooled Headbanger’s Ball to be some reality show for 12 yr olds?

      • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

I look forward to their upcoming show where Jamie Jasta tells us all about his pregnancy and him finally pushing it out.

    • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

MTV Unplugged is going to relaunch as well.

      • Eliza

That wouldn’t be bad at all.

        • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

I definitely wouldn’t be expecting any good artists on there, though. More like Bieber, Cyrus, and that ‘I’m In Love With Tha Coco’ guy doing unplugged sets.

          • Eliza

            That’d be hilarious!

    • there are still lost souls in this world, in need of saving. do not ridicule them, but rather take them in and nurture them into becoming real merolheads.

  • Oh man. Propagandhi? Small Brown Bike? Letterman?? I’d def go to Fest.

    • Boss theSpeedMetalBastard Ross

I saw a dude with a Propagandhi shirt on the other day.

    • Joaquin Stick

Be sure to bring your spray paint for your 2-foot mohawk. (I don’t know most of the bands on the lineup, but the promo pictures from the last one led me to believe that hair gel is required.)

      • The lineup is all “punk” bands, but none of these seem to be of the costume punk variety.

        • It’s the punk that inspires punks to make shirts that say “defend pop-punk” isn’t it?

      • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

I’m wondering if all those blacked out spots on the poster are blank spaces for more bands that’ll be announced, or bands that are too embarrassed to be mentioned but really really need the money. And they added Toys That Kill twice, apparently to fill in the blank spaces.

      • more beer

Real punks charge their mohawks with Elmer’s Glue.

  • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

Great start to the week, especially with some new Akercocke, which completely came out of left field.

And Stone Roses announced that their new record will be up and out this summer. Not metal, I know, but Stone fucking Roseeeeeeeeeeeees!

    • Eliza

      And it’s a good song.

      • Joaquin Stick

It sounds like it was ripped from a radio show, so the quality is very not good, but I was surprised how much I enjoyed it.

        • Eliza

Me too. And I’ve never listened to this band before.

        • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

More likely than no, it’ll be much better quality when it’s released as a single, or when it comes out on the full length. Whichever comes first.

        • maybe it’s finally the band’s time to shine. the masses are ready for that style of music

    • RustyShackleford

Wow! That’s awesome. Never really listen to Stone Roses myself but my girlfriend loves them and every time she puts them on I’m always going “yo what’s that jam?” lol

      • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

Both albums, especially the self titled debut, are classics.

  • Eliza

Really digging the If These Trees Could Talk song.

    • CyberneticOrganism

talking trees & shit black metal

      • Eliza

        is best black metal.

  • Night Demon slays live, as does Carcass, so don’t miss that tour if it comes near you!

    • Lisa Ling: Devourer Of Souls

Found out last night that Fabio Lione has a new project out. This apparently is their only song so far though:

      • Fabio will one day sing in all power metal bands

I want to go to this, but the problem with the show near me is that there’s not really much of a parking lot there to peel out in with my F150

  • CyberneticOrganism

Meshuggah’s video clip sounds like Author & Punisher.

  • Rowsdower

Holy shit new Akercocke! Such a criminally underrated band.

  • Aaaaaaah Psalm Zero Aaaaaaaaah Edward Aaaaaaaaaaah!

    • Joaquin Stick

The press release I linked to provides lots of good info on the album, if you didn’t see it yet.

    • Edward/Breegrodamus™

Richter I literally just posted Psalm Zero!!!!!! before scrolling through these comments (saw the news last week but still)

  • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

I reckon Pain of Salvation’s “return to heavy” will just mean a little less hard rock of Road Salt and less of the acoustic of Falling Home.

    New Lord Mantis

    • Joaquin Stick

I think you are probably spot on. Even so, I think that it is a direction I will like better, as long as the songs are solid.

  • Simon PhoenixKing Rising

A new Vader album you say?

    • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

The post itself was a bit hard to understand, but there might be an EP might come out already come summer – whether they’ll be same tracks or not, I couldn’t tell.

      • Simon PhoenixKing Rising

Yeah that’s pretty much the gist of it. A sample EP of sorts in the summer consisting of a couple of tracks from the upcoming full-length. They did that with the last album too.

So basically: a new album + a re-release of The Ultimate Incarnation with a bonus CD of the original Sunlight Studios version of the album = see gif above.

  • Edward/Breegrodamus™

    Psalm Zero!!!!!!!!!

    • Sadly, according to the press release it looks like Andrew Hock is no longer in the band?

  • called it earlier, i think that Alcest album will be amazebro. wondering if it will be more shoegazey or more black/post.

    • Joaquin Stick

I am also very curious, but either way, in Neige we Trust.

  • brokensnow

    Small brown bike!

  • New Candlemass!!!!!!! I want to hear 🙁

    • Eliza

Would knowing that I think it’s really good make you feel better or worse?

      • To be honest, that helps a lot! 🙂 It keeps me interested on it, at least.

Is Mats Léven still singing with them, right?

  • brokensnow
  • Spear

Mmm, Candlemass. Today has become that much less shitty.

  • If you dig the Reek of Putrefaction album, and the County Medical Examiners then give excellent compilation album a go. Pathologist is criminally underrated. Glad to see a proper comp album finally. Includes the debut full-length and first demo.

  • FYI, St. Louis had a “Meshuggah Cafe” for over 10 years, if it matters. (not a single employee, over the course of its existence, has known about the band Meshuggah. i asked)

    • Joaquin Stick

Literally the only reason I mentioned it is because I was trying to find an original source, and during my Googling, that article about the bagel shop popped up first in the “news” section, and I thought it would be a goofy thing to include for no reason.

      • all good, my brotha. i’m a chatterbox both IRL and AFK, so just making conversation

        • Joaquin Stick

I was just afraid that someone would think that I was making a point about something, but nah, just being dumb!

    • Owlswald

That’s a shame they didn’t know the band. There is some serious word-play gold to be had there. I’ll take the Jens and Lox…

      • imagine a youthful, chatty me in there, pleading “you all work in the MESHUGGAH cafe and have never heard of a band of the same name?!?!”

  • hieronymus bossk
    • CyberneticOrganism

  • Owlswald

That new Akercocke is awesome! Hopefully we get another video like this:

  • Waynecro

    Thanks for the news, dude!

  • Guppusmaximus

The new Candlemass isn’t bad…It just isn’t Candlemass. Hell, even King of the Grey Islands wasn’t really Candlemass for me either. Gawd, I miss the Candlemass of old and the Trilogy (Nightfall, Ancient Dreams, Tales of Creation)
