The Best Band in Illinois is Deus Ex

Share:

Back in August we asked you to help us find the best unsigned bands in America. After listening to hundreds of submissions, we’ve finally narrowed down our pick for the ritziest state in the Midwest: The best band in Illinois is a one-man project called Deus Ex.

*Full disclosure: Deus Ex is the project of CyberneticOrganism, an advanced robot who writes about noise, beer, and BDubs for the Toilet ov Hell. There were several band submissions for Illinois and we believe Deus Ex is the best. You’re free to accuse us of nepotism (I will assure you this was not the case), but you should really give these songs a listen first.

When not writing for the Toilet, CyberneticOrganism (who sometimes goes by the human name “Jon”), creates dark industrial metal. Since 2006, Jon has been working on Deus Ex (not to be confused with the video game series, you fucking nerd). In May of 2013, he released his first full-length: Corrosive Genesis. The album is a dark and crushing affair with mechanized drums, cinematic keyboards, and tormented howls. It is the exact album I want from an evil android.

CyberneticOrganism:

“First off, let me thank the glorious lifehaters at TOH who took the time to check out and vote for Deus Ex. You have all been guaranteed a prime spot in The Void! The overall concept of Corrosive Genesis is the manifestation of a divine entity from a mortal being, one who believes he is destined to assume his own, rightful place in the endless pantheon of gods over the millenia, the ultimate and final god to end the memory of all others who came before. Once his mortal shell is finally shed, his wish is fulfilled as he is born into a divine form, yet not as the powerful, encompassing idol he intended, but rather an ashen, eroded god who holds dominion over a barren, derelict and failed plane of existence. From the instant of his ascent, he is a slave to a broken realm. Thus, he destroys his empty world and buries himself within its ruin.”

Here’s what our judges had to say:

W: “Deus Ex is the sound of a mechanical monstrosity gaining consciousness and amalgamating a weapons manufacturer plant full of industrial equipment and deadly munitions into its hardened and deadly exoskeleton. Downtuned, Fear Factory-esque riffs meet industrial drums and eerie electronic atmospheres to craft a beast of whirring and clicking hatred hellbent on destroying you.”

Masterlord SteelDragon: “Deus Ex is a blackened, industrial tribute to the inevitable extinction of mankind by the iron fists of things made of iron. There should be a little something for everyone in Corrosive Genesis. Especially if you’re a robit. Kill all humans!”

Go like Deus Ex on Facebook.

Honorable Mention:

Shavasana – Jazzy (seriously; they’ve got horns n’ shit), experimental death metal from Chicago, IL. Check ’em on Facebook and Bandcamp.

The Toilet ov Hell is on an absurd quest to find the best unsigned band in each state of this glorious union. The purpose? To shine the spotlight on bands that deserve more exposure. Also, we’re going to determine once and for all the greatest state in the nation. Each state winner is decided by a collection of 25 judges. After we’ve announced the winner of each state, we’re gonna throw them all in a winner-take-all bracket and leave the votes up to you. Who will be the best unsigned band in the United States? Which state is superior? We can’t wait to find out.

Previous winners:
Alabama — Phylum
Alaska — Terraform
Arizona – Take Over And Destroy
Arkansas – Torii
California – Destroy Judas
Colorado – The Sleer
Connecticut – Autumn’s Eyes
Delaware – Sloss
Florida – Capracide

    • Edward

I really appreciate your use of the >s here.

      • Tyree

I knew Dubya would join the >’s club.

        • Edward

Everyone is doing it. JB, W, I’m seeing it with a greater frequency with each passing day, which is…

          >>>>>>>>>>>>

    • CyberneticOrganism

      Thanks Dubya!

      • W.

        You’re my favorite robit.

  • Tyree

    Way to go CyberneticOrganism!

    • CyberneticOrganism

Thank you glorious MSD for your glowing praise above!

  • Now I have the urge to play the deus ex vidyagame.

    • Which one? The latest one was pretty good but the first one >>>

      • Human Revolution. I think the older ones are too old for my computer to run them properly lol. I have played HR ten times and it hasn’t gotten old. Can’t say the same for many other games.

        • JWG

I have Human Rev for 360. I really should have waited for the inevitable GOTY edition, never mind the latest version I couldn’t quite have predicted. I think it’s called Director’s Cut or something like that.

It’s one of many games that I bought, started, got distracted from and never went back to. But I’m definitely feeling the urge now, too.

…And I have a whole week off University stuff starting next Monday…

          • W.

I got busy finishing my thesis and never actually completed the campaign, but I was utterly enthralled by it while I was playing.

          • Trying not to kill things gets so frustrating. Deus Ex HR and Dishonored were taxing for me.

          • W.

I did start Dishonored this summer on a minimal kill playthrough. Gotta keep those rats at bay

          • It’s no fun to let everyone live anyway lol.

          • Gurp

Finding ways I could go around and avoid conflict was something I found surprisingly fun, given the different paths you can take in Dishonored, and the sweet hand-to-hand takedowns in Human Revolution.

          • W.

I loved bursting through the walls to nab some punk in HR. I basically stopped not-killing people after they blew up my helicopter.

          • Gurp

            Robocop style!

And yeah, I started shooting to kill after Faridah got shot down as well. Luckily I had been stockpiling on weapons and ammo the entire game, despite not using them for the most part.

          • I kill them.

          • Definitely worth your time haha.

          • Gurp

I’d recommend it. And make sure you have a book to read or something during the loading screens.

    • CyberneticOrganism

I’ve never actually played the game but I’ve heard the original is well done & pretty addictive. Is it worth checking out?

      • W.

        Absolutely.

      • I bet someone has created a mod of the original that will make it run a little smoother.

      • I haven’t played the original, but Human Revolution is worth whatever they charge you. One of the best games of the generation easily.

    • Been playing it this weekend, never got far. It is rocket of the highest order.

  • Renan Ribeiro

This is seriously good. At least top 3 in the best unsigned bands contest so far.

    • CyberneticOrganism

Much appreciated Renan, thanks for listening!

  • CyberneticOrganism

Don’t even know what to say guys, you’re all amazing. Thanks an absolute ton for checking out Deus Ex and voting for it. There are 2-3 more songs en route this winter.

    • Congrats Jon, you deserve it!

    • Sponge Of Mystery

Do you plan on ever making physical copies? would so buy O.o

      • CyberneticOrganism

Probably not, although that would be fun to design a vinyl.

        • Sponge Of Mystery

well either way this is sick dude!! YOU DESERVE MORE RECOGNITION

          • CyberneticOrganism

            Thanks a ton, sponge!

    • Max

I’m listening to it right now on Bandcamp. It’s good, man! Especially the riffing.

      • CyberneticOrganism

        Thanks Usul!

  • Renan Ribeiro

Plus the line “they’ve got horns and shit” reminds me of the defunct snacksandshit.com

The first 100 or so posts still make me laugh hard

    • HA, I forgot about this. One of my favorite time wasters in college.

  • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

I really want to go on for hours about this…this…monstrosity of favoritism.
Alas, my heart knows ’tis true this victory was well earned.
Not even my love for all things eccentric could have had me pushing the button for Shavasana. Not given these few listens to both.

    • CyberneticOrganism

Much appreciated & thanks for listening Nordling. I honestly submitted it as an unlikely long shot but I thank the TOH crew profusely for liking what they heard.

      • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

‘Tis deserved. This be among the better contributions to this series.

        • CyberneticOrganism

          #honored

  • JWG

“…My name is Bill. Bill Cosby”

“Aren’t you a little old to be in grade school?”

“I was held back ten human grades … I mean, grades. Do you companion-friends know Eric Cartman?”

    • CyberneticOrganism

      Nice

  • Between The Buried & Smee

Is High Spirits still technically local?

    • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

I’d assume so, and they’re signed to Hells Headbangers anyway.

  • crazytaco_12

Good shit CyberneticOrganism! Completely deserved win

    • CyberneticOrganism

Thanks! Your name sounds delicious right about now.

  • PrincePoopyPanties

They’re not together at the moment, but here’s my best friend’s band back in Chicago.

My favourite Orga(ni)sm! As a Fear Factory fan, this is right up my alley. 10/10 would go back in time to save.
