The Best Band in Idaho is Rotten Hand

Who will it be?

Back in August we asked you to help us find the best unsigned bands in America. After listening to hundreds of submissions, we’ve finally narrowed down our pick for the “You da ho” state. The best band in Idaho is Rotten Hand.

Hailing from Idaho Falls, ID, Rotten Hand deliver a grindier take on the kind of Integrity-style metallic-tinged hardcore that has influenced countless face and hand tattoos over the last 20 years. Rotten Hand understand economy of sound. Spend a minute and fifty seconds listening to “Burning” from Rotten Hand’s split with Rites. The band effortlessly shifts from a furious grind to a feedback-fueled build to a massive breakdown (that would be a breakdown in the cathartic sense; there are no unnecessary chugga-chuggas at work here). I’m a busy man, ain’t got no time for a 10-minute ambient track to prepare me for a blast beat. Fortunately, Rotten Hand understand my time concerns and create no-nonsense, hard-as-nails songs that hover around the 2 minute mark. Perfect. If you’re looking for me, I’ll be out punching the floor in my office.

Here’s what our judges had to say:

Masterlord SteelDragon: “Hardcore is neither my strong suit nor my cup of tea, but I still cast my vote for Rotten Hand. The tone is nasty enough, the riffs are thrashy enough, and the vocals are ornery enough to earn the Steel Stamp ov Steel Approval. They’re never not pissed off, which is something I and many of you can relate to. I dig it so much, I’ll briefly consider forgiving them for combining the two most-used words in hardcore band names.”

Stockhausen: “Rotten Hand delivers a straight-to-the-skull style of gritty hardcore, with plenty of nasty darkness around the edges and nary a frill to be seen. These guys make it clear that there is no nonsense to be had, because we’ve got some skulls to bash.”

Honorable Mentions:

Nailbastard – Totally rocking punk/metal hybrid that is unfortunately very recently defunct 🙁

Deep Creeps – Deeply strange and spastic noise punk from Boise, ID. Check em on Facebook.

The Toilet ov Hell is on an absurd quest to find the best unsigned band in each state of this glorious union. The purpose? To shine the spotlight on bands that deserve more exposure. Also, we’re going to determine once and for all the greatest state in the nation. Each state winner is decided by a collection of 25 judges. After we’ve announced the winner of each state, we’re gonna throw them all in a winner-take-all bracket and leave the votes up to you. Who will be the best unsigned band in the United States? Which state is superior? We can’t wait to find out.

Previous winners:
Alabama — Phylum
Alaska — Terraform
Arizona – Take Over And Destroy
Arkansas – Torii
California – Destroy Judas
Colorado – The Sleer
Connecticut – Autumn’s Eyes
Delaware – Sloss
Florida – Capracide
Georgia – Lost Hours
Hawaii – Darkest Path

  • someone must have upped decked every single toilet in Idaho if this is the best

    • its Idaho what did u expect?

    • Poseur Diposeur

My buddy’s band Nailbastard won the original vote, but they recently broke up because everyone moved away. As everyone always does

      • W.

Nailbastard were sick, dude. We loved ’em.

        • Poseur Diposeur

I will let them know. Definitely the best band I have heard come out of Moscow. Their drummer played in or produced like every band around here and then moved to LA. He is the World Speed Project guy, which the hipper people here may have read about on Vice

          • Edward

… is Noisey a part of Vice? I occasionally see articles on there that interest me.

          • Poseur Diposeur

Yes they are. Did you catch NOLA: Life, Death and Heavy Blues on the Bayou? Great doc series about NOLA metal

          • Edward

I did not catch it, but I caught that it was a thing. This may sound like blasphemy but I’m gonna do it anyways, cause it’s kinda my thing lately… I have never listened to Acid Bath. I queued up their first album the other day but then life happened and I didn’t get to listen to it…

          • W.

Are we turning this into a confession thread?

          • Edward

We could. There are 20 minutes until the last post of the day goes live.

          • W.

            I used to like Mushroomhead.

          • Poseur Diposeur

I still love XX and XIII. Ever since Jmann left it has been one flush after another

          • W.

Didn’t he come back for the most recent one? I haven’t heard it, but I did listen to the Pitch Black Forecast album.

          • Poseur Diposeur

Dude he did. I had no idea until looking it up right now

          • Edward

I used to really enjoy Slipknot’s Vol 3 and honestly I listened to it within the last two years or so again, and enjoyed it.

          • W.

I’ve never really gotten into the 2nd wave of Norwegian black metal bands.

          • Edward

There is some great stuff there.

Last night I listened to James Taylor’s Fire and Rain about four or five times, in a row. That’s not really ‘confession’ worthy because it is a great song, timeless, but it is a thing that happened.

          • frozengoatsheadupanunsarse

You still love Emperor though, right?

          • W.

Absolutely. Who doesn’t? Prometheus is my jam.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

Prometheus was also much better movie than it’s reputation lets understand

          • Edward

It was pretty good. Fassbender killed shit, as always (almost always) and it had some moments.

          • W.

            I like the movie too!

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

I love it much also due to the gargantuan amounts of complaining about supposed plotholes and illogicalities. Neither of which I found.
            Fassbender for prez. Fassbender 2016!

          • frozengoatsheadupanunsarse

Fan here. R rated slimy schlock on a big ass budget, sort of thing that could have been made with me specifically in mind.

          • frozengoatsheadupanunsarse

I’m a Nightside Eclipse guy, but it’s all good stuff. The amount of purist mudslinging at IX Equilibrium and Prometheus always struck me as ridiculous, the songwriting may have been catchier and more elaborate but they still had plenty of venomous atmosphere.

          • Edward

I like the black metal version and the symphonic black metal version, and I dig Ihsahn even though he gets mixed responses around these parts.

          • KJM

I’ve seen Slipknot 3 times at various Ozzfests and don’t have strong feelings about them one way or the other.

          • Edward

            Were they any good live?

          • KJM

I wasn’t bored during their set so I guess that says something. The other bands(besides Sabbath) that played Ozzfest 2001 offended me far more than Slipknot did.

          • Tyree
          • Poseur Diposeur

I heard Celtic Frost for the first time yesterday

          • Edward
          • Poseur Diposeur

Confession #2: Until right this moment I thought that was a Sepultura song

          • They are. Probably the best music site around imo

          • ASIDE FROM THIS ONE OF COURSE.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

There’s a Moscow… in Idaho. Dude, seriously mang, what the heck.

On another Nailbastard is great. I reclon there never was a full release, despite the coming soon.

          • Poseur Diposeur

I am pretty sure it was completed. When I hear back about it I will email Joe

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

            Ok

  • W.

This is some violent hardcore. Open up that dance floor.

  • Tyree

          • NefariousDude

Is tyree negrodamus?? ive been pondering that recently as i sit upon my throne of lurk

          • W.

They are not. Negrodamus is Edward.

          • NefariousDude

            Ahhh. Then is joe phone?

          • HAHAHAHA!
            No. I am the table.

          • Stockhausen

            THEN WHO WAS PHONE??

          • Stockhausen

Oops, didn’t read enough to see that the phone joke had already been made in a more subtle/funny way. Don’t care.

          • Edward

I am the artist formerly known as…

            Tyree has always been Tyree.

          • NefariousDude

            Ive missed your thumbnail </3

          • Guacamole Jim

THIS IS THE BEST SHIT EVER

          • I AM THE ONION I WORSHIP

        • While I agree that every MANOWAR song is better than everything else, I would argue that is the greatest MANOWAR, and by association, the greatest song in the world https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7_vluu7ukM

          • W.

I’m partial to Blood of the Kings is a little better than Hail and Kill in my opinion. Both are great though.

          • We even each other out, Blood of the Kings is my #2

          • W.

I fixed my egregious typo. That’s what happens when you force two sentences to do the fusion dance.

          • Stockhausen

Aww, remember Hail and Kill? Cool guy. I think I saw him here once.

          • Xan

Flipped the room upside down again.

  • Poseur Diposeur

As seemingly the only Idahoan that reads/posts on this site, I really appreciate this feature highlighting some bands from this state. I imagine when the Lords of the Toilet came up with this idea they did not realize that much of the Western United States is an empty wasteland where the only scene is the one your drunk ass uncle makes at the local high school football game.

  • JWG

All I know about Idaho is that there’s a jazz festival in February in a town that sounds like it was founded by commies.

    Also potatoes.

    • Poseur Diposeur

Yeah that’s my town. It was actually named after Moscow, Pennsylvania I think. Or some other Moscow back east that is not the Russian one

      • JWG

Makes sense. There seem to be a whole lot of Moscows in the US, enough that it wouldn’t necessarily be the Russian city from which one or another derived (directly). Although at least one did…

…Lot of Warsaws too, it seems.

Yes, I’m now looking up European place names on a map of the States. Anything to avoid the work I actually should be doing.

  • Gurp

Must make for an awkward fap.
