Hello! Happy New Year! Let me melt your face!

So as I sat there trying to decide what to do for the last TDT of 2014, I thought about doing a huge ass post wherein I’d go in depth about all the good tech death that dropped this year. I then thought about all the tech death that dropped this year… like all six trillion albums or whatever. Then I started second guessing myself because I actually still have terrorists to kill and shit. I mean, they don’t just take holiday breaks. Something something terrorism never sleeps. Anyway, I decided that instead of some massive wall of text which, lets be cereal here, you don’t want to read and I don’t have the time to write, I’m going to post links to what I think are some of the best tech death songs of the year and leave the rest of you toileteers to talk about them and post cat gifs in the comments. I suppose this is also somewhat of a Tech Death Thursday recap for those of you that are new to the site and too lazy to go through the archives like I am. Let’s get to it!

OH OH OH OH BEFORE I FORGET, GOROD POSTED A GUITAR PLAYTHROUGH OF A SONG THAT IS GOING TO BE ON THEIR NEW ALBUM IN 2015. YOU SHOULD PROBABLY PAY ATTENTION BECAUSE THIS IS IN CAPS LOCK. IT WORKS FOR DAVID DRAIMAN SO IT HAD BETTER WORK FOR ME! Lastly, I’m writing this on 1 hour of sleep so if I sound like a fool it’s because I currently am, ok? Ok cool, let’s get techy with it!

Bloodshot Dawn – Demons: “The Image Faded” – I gave this album a stellar review and it is my album of the year. I don’t think I need to say more, but I will. Buy it buy it buy it.

Soreption – Engineering the Void: “Engineering the Void” – Look, if you dig tech death and haven’t already listened to this band, what the fuck, man?

Artifical Brain – Labyrinth Constellation: “Absorbing Black Ignition” – On the off chance that you haven’t heard this album and you are regular visitor to this site, SHAME ON YOU! BAD BAD BAD!

Abysmal Dawn – Obsolescence: “Human Obsolescence” – The scream at the beginning of this song is just fucking badass and signals that the floodgates holding back the epicness of this song have opened.

Job For a Cowboy – Sun Eater: “The Synthetic Sea” – This is what happens when a band grows up and changes their style correctly. I also wrote a review for this one. See, All That Remains? This is how a band is supposed to evolve. Seriously though, this album is perfect.

Killitorous – Party,Grind: “Godking” – This band is absolutely hilarious (as their name implies). On top of that, they manage to mix tech death and grind into an extremely tasty package. [Hehehehehe. – Masterlord]

Narada – Dead Waters: “Chikkhai Bardo“- I have been listening to this a lot lately. It would have been in my top ten if I had been blessed with more time to listen to it before making the end of year lists.

Hadal Maw – Senium: “Aetas De Morior” – This is one of those bands that I had no idea was a thing until I stumbled upon their Bandcamp. Yes, this is their debut, and yes, they sound like they have been at it for years. Of all the up and coming bands I think I’m most excited to see what’s next from these guys.

Ophidius – The Throat of the World: “Fuck you I won’t choose just one song” – Skyrim metal. No seriously, this is Skyrim tech death and it’s an incredible little EP. Though I would like some vocals, the instrumental aspect is so good that it isn’t a deal breaker in this case. Also SKYRIM.

Primordium – Aeonian Obsolescence (I hate typing this word): “The Incursion” – One of the first tech death songs featured on this website and also one of the best.

Archspire – The Lucid Collective: “Seven Crowns and the Oblivion Chain” – Look, you guys know that I’m always Archspiring about Archpire and Archspire the Archspire album really Archspired me by Archspire. Totally Archspire Archspire! <3

Allegaeon – Elements of the Infinite: “Threshold of Perception” – I really love this entire album but since I’m picking single songs, I’m gonna have to give the edge to this one because that intro is just so fucking glorious.

Emeth – Aethyr: “Aethyr” – I’m not really sure why these dudes aren’t more well known, but they totally should be. They write nothing but top tier rippage (not a typo, patenting it).

The Zenith Passage – Simulated Reality: “Simulated Reality” – Although they only released one song, which was a pre-production song this year, it’s still good enough that I’m including it here. Every time I listen to this I find it hard to believe it’s pre production.

Alterbeast – Immortal: “Mutilated Marvel” – This was a tough one to choose because I love this entire album. It’s a brutal controlled chaos that leaves me wanting more and more and more and more.

Raster Density – Ov Hands and Bestial Pleasure: “Shattering the Spheres” – This is another song from a fantastic album that I gave the edge to because the intro is fucking awesome.

Fallujah – The Flesh Prevails: “Carved From Stone“- I believe this is the second single the band released before the album came out, but it has remained my favorite on the album. This band is going to be huge.

Black Crown Initiate – The Wreckage of Stars: “To The Eye That Leads You” – This was one of the most anticipated albums of the year and as far as I’m concerned, it didn’t disappoint in the least. I picked this one because of the tinge of Travis Ryan-esque vocals that can be heard at times.

Inferi – The Path Of Apotheosis: “Onslaught Of The Covenant” – This band definitely takes the award for my favorite guitars of the year. I’m currently facepalming for not including them in my top ten.

Fuck You And Die – Elements of Instability: “Security Through Obscurity” – This band is fucking incredible. Insanely good riffage and top notch vocals. On top of that, they can provide you with your Necrophagist fix. I honestly think it would help them gain popularity if they changed their name, though. Check out the review here.

Last but certainly not least we have Beyond Creation’s Earthborn Evolution: “Elusive Reverence“- Dat bass! This band’s debut album is one of the best tech death albums I have heard, and their new album is even better!

I could keep going, but I feel these are the bands that did the best work this year. Obviously there’s a ton more, but I think this is plenty for now. Plus, that’s what future TDTs are for! See ya next year!

Until next time,

Stay Tech

  • I love Tech Death.

    • and nails?

      • Yes. I’m gonna be better this year.

      • BLVKKBEVRDED DRVGON

I’m so excited about new Nails material, i’m getting half a chub thinking about it.

        • I’m waiting for a download of the new songs, I’m unable to play the flexi disc that came with my issue of decibel.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

Also, the Flexi discs don’t seem to have a very good quality to them.

      • Vernon Gholston’s NFL Career

Are they WASP or UFO? I can’t love them as much as WASP and UFO if they are not WASP or UFO.

        • Are you kidding me with this?

          • Vernon Gholston’s NFL Career

No. I’m very serious about my love of WASP and UFO. I love those two bands more than anything.

          • if you have to choose among WASP, UFO, and Taco Bell… which would it be?

          • Vernon Gholston’s NFL Career

Taco Bell. You know how much I love my Taco Bell.

    • Vernon Gholston’s NFL Career

I’m thinking about going to some tour of British Invasion musicians going near me. If I don’t go to that I might see Mike and The Mechanics as that is happening at the same venue.

    • Vernon Gholston’s NFL Career

I love WASP and UFO as everyone should.

  • Disclaimer: it was 2014 when I wrote this!

    • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

I was about to bear you apart for this in a minute.

      • VVorld Peace

        I’m stealing that phrase.

      • I feel like getting eaten by a bear is like the worst way to die, especially if it’s a bear that digs black metal because then it’s just gonna be all filthy about it.

        • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

          Filth is my game.

(And we all know Black Bears are way more dangerous than say, Grizzly)

        • Scrimm

I would contend that hyenas would be worse, since apparently when eating prey they start with the asshole.

          • Hmmm not sure how you know this, but I also don’t want to know how you know this.

          • Scrimm

Morning radio show out here used to have a segment where they would pit two animals against each other(like say, a rhino against 20 hyenas or something) and let people call in and vote on who would win. They would argue back and forth about it, and throw crazy bits of info about the animals out there.

          • VVorld Peace

That’s awesome. Also, brown bears >>>>>> most land predators.

          • Scrimm

Yeah. Terrible terrible music, but the rest of the show is good.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

I can do this as well. I do fetishes too

          • Scrimm

Sounds like something MA would be into.

    • M Shadows!

      Disclaimer: M Shadows!

  • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

Killitorous is also fronted by a chick now.
One of us may be a dirty ole’ perv here Killitorous, you or me, but your name just became even more silly.

    • Is this real life? Are they really?

      • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

        Youri gone. Chick in.
(I know it’s rude, but I don’t recall her name) Unhuman/Killitorous split is on the top of my ‘to-do-2015’ – list.

        • Youri wasn’t the vocalist of Killitorous though was he? where are you getting this information?

          • Speaking of frontwomen, I think Alissa white glutz’s voice is more suited to actual extreme metal and not starch enemy.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

I second this. Also: She shrieks and sings, but not in AE

          • Some of the songs she did with The Agonist really were amazing because of her vocals.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

It seems in the light of the new songs that she was the main reason I dug them.

          • ditto. The new chick sounds awful.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

This is actually a thing now.
Old vocalist leaves and a new is chosen because he/she had done some vocal covers of the bands material. And turns out a lesser in his/her capabilities. See: Medeia
or alternatively, every band, ever replacing the old vocalist with a new that sound exactly the same.

          • Bottom line is alissa is wasted on arch enemy unless they change their style. I have to imagine she realizes it.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

            See: $$$

          • WHOOPS

            Hey guys, stop circlejerking.

          • WHOOPS

            I don’t think I asked you, fuckface.

          • That’s not nice, I’m telling the masterlord.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

Jack’s answer + those outright feminine ears.

          • Miguel Serra

toilet made me listen The Agonist twice today! what’s happening here?!

          • less effort, more money.. she’s be all right

          • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

            Youri was.
Although he only did live shows with them. Info is from Killitorous/Youri themselves.

          • I was gonna say it’s definitely not him on the recording. I checked their fb and saw nothing about this?

          • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

Youri’s personal account shows a lot more of the pics with him. Also, I think – though am not certain- that MA shows him as a live/past member.

  • Gurrp

    Stay Tekk!

  • Tyree

    Well done Jason Sudeikis!

maybe one day. an artiste cant over-exert his muse.

          • WHOOPS

Eh, I can live without one,

    • Vernon Gholston’s NFL Career

You should have phrased it like this

Jack, whenever I deTECHT a need
for a weedily, a deedily or a do
I know to look no further than you.

  • Simon PhoenixKing

Narada and Hadal Maw are my choices out of these. Those albums were tasty.

Also, sat what you will about The Flesh Prevails, but Alone With You/Allure is still a fantastic song.

    • Hadal Maw especially is fucking incredible. Reminds me of how I felt when I first heard Black Crown Initiate.

      • Vernon Gholston’s NFL Career

I listened to them. They blew my mind. The last artist that blew my mind like they did was Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush back in 2008.

    • Miguel Serra

I’m listening Hadal Maw and I’m very impressed. The guitars have a very crunchy tone

      • Simon PhoenixKing

Indeed. The best use of seven strings I’ve heard in a while from a band not named Gorguts or Godflesh.

        • Vernon Gholston’s NFL Career

My favorite guitar player is Michael Schenker followed by Hendrix and Frank Marino. They can play guitar and amaze with their skill.

    • Allure is definitely a great song, if not the best on that album.

  • Akercocke ov Steele

I was quite pleased by the latest Origin album this year, although it was significantly grindier and less weddly deedly than Antithesis or Entity.

    • It didn’t do much for me honestly.

      • Lacertilian

Same, it was like Entity minus all the bits I lenjoyed & atched on to.

    • Scrimm

      I really liked it too.

  • tertius_decimus

Killitorous – Beneath The Massacre ripoff.
Ophidious – Beneath The Massacre ripoff.
Alterbeast – Beneath The Massacre ripoff.
    Primordium – Decrepit Birth ripoff.
    Archspire – Necrophagist ripoff.
Fuck You And Die – Necrophagist ripoff.

    • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

While, perhaps, all of this maybe true,
Primordium = Good, Decrepit Birth = Barf.

      • BLVKKBEVRDED DRVGON

Decrepit Birth = Barf? Back in my tech death days, DB was my shit. I do not agree with this particular assessment.

        • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

          *Barfs*

Also, Fallujah = Barf, my distaste for them grows ever on.

          • BLVKKBEVRDED DRVGON

Man, all this Fallujah hate is the exact same as 2013’s Deafheaven hate. The EXACT same. Band makes brilliant album, its not trve, erbody hates.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

I loved Deafhaven from the beginning. Hated Fallujah from the beginning.
on both accounts, I caught the hype later on.

          • BLVKKBEVRDED DRVGON

Oh, if you like Deafheaven, you get +1billion points in my book.

          • WHOOPS

I never got those points for liking Deafheaven.

          • BLVKKBEVRDED DRVGON

i gave you those points, then deducted 2billion for all the scruggery

          • WHOOPS

            You are a dirty bastard.

          • WHOOPS

            Sunbather was pretty trve tho

          • No

          • BLVKKBEVRDED DRVGON

I mean, no, it wasnt. At the same time, Deafheaven didn’t do too much more to black metal, especially american black metal, that was terribly divergent. The real difference is in execution, not style. Same goes for Fallujah.

          • I’m probably a bit biased as I’m not at the point where I enjoy black metal yet

          • Scrimm
          • I got really confused because I plugged in my headphones and lich king started playing lol. You’re the second person to send this to me though, I like it but I can’t seem to find it anywhere.

          • Scrimm

Their first 3 are great. after that vocalist jumped ship they went to shit fast imo.

          • you’ll get there. i was a black metal holdout until i heard 1349’s Demonoir. then i told all the corpse painted satans to “shut up and take my money!”

          • Vernon Gholston’s NFL Career

I love that album so much. It was my favorite album of 2013. My least favorite thing of 2013 was how shitty the Jacksonville Jaguars did. It’s becoming so hard to be a fan of theirs. I’d rather be a Jets fan and the only players I like on the Jets are Michael Vick and Chris Johnson who need to retire.

          • jax

damn, you’re a jags fan too??? u live in jax?

          • Vernon Gholston’s NFL Career

I’m a Jaguars fan who lives in New York. The Jags are really testing my loyalty with their sucking worse than the Jets this season and taking Toby Gerhart. I’d rather have Shonn Greene or Chris Johnson as our RB.

          • Ellipsis ov Flush
          • WHOOPS

I remember someone here talking about that issue and how the ones hating them are more hipster.

          • Ellipsis ov Flush

I don’t hate them, just don’t get the hype.

          • People are always going to hate when a band twists the structure of a genre like fallujah did and garners success from it.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

I will admit at this point not having liatened anything else than the newest Fallujah and one REALLY old (me thinks) song.

I am not admittedly a fan of most weedilideediling and such efforts, even if few are often irritating (though TDT has shown me various good bands as well).

In addition I think Fallujah’s songwriting is not very good and the production is outright obnoxious.

And it was sold to me as ambient death metal. I can hear what makes people call them that, but I also hear them failing at it miserably (not helped by tge production).

These, not the hype – if you will, are the reasons my distaste for them grows.

I will, however, admit that disliking them and then seeing them get a lot of praise has not done anything good to our relationship.

          • Miguel Serra

I liked that Fallujah album just for the solos and some incorporations of that said ambient elements, the compositions are good and they need to balance more those elements to find their own voice. But, they really need to refine their sound and turn down the decibels. I’m giving them my vote of trust and if they fail in their next attempt I will break their instruments with my trusty bat.

          • tertius_decimus

Seems like the Universe is paying back what it took few years ago: Cryptopsy.

          • something happened regarding Fallujah. everyone went goatshit over Harvest Wombs and then lost their shvt with the Nomadic EP… then i guess once they amassed so much hype over the new album, there was just no way most people would be satisfied — or on the flipside talk poorly about it simply because they did have so many fans?

      • Simon PhoenixKing

I am greatly disappointed in you for this statement.

DB are one of the handful of tech bands that are not wankery for wankerys sake. Plus Bill is a fun frontman.

      • Lacertilian

If you don’t like this instrumental, I don’t think I can believe you. Sounds like the theme song to an ancient battle involving all of humanity.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fgKtFUU1ps

        • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

It’s not mile every song by them sucks. Just overall.

          • Lacertilian

Fair enough, I had to try and persuade you. I’m not a huge fan of their vocals but the music seems to hold it up for me.

        • i REALLY dug Polarity a few years ago (before i met Jack of course, when i only thought there were like 5 tech death bands) and did get to see DC once. of course they played their cover of “Crystal Mountain” and the crowd went nuts, cause why wouldn’t we?

    • Fort the most part every new band is going to be a ripoff of another band at this point. However, I don’t see how any of those are Beneath the Massacre ripoffs lol.

      • tertius_decimus

For me it’s like a djent craze: so many bands which play the same stuff. Not a biggest Meshuggah fan, but I admire what they’ve done, how good Thordendal entwines Allan Holdsworth-esque solo work into psychotic atmosphere, but I wanna only one band like this to exist. What other bands bring to the table? Same with Beneath The Massacre craze.

        • I get where you’re coming from but a lot of those bands do way more than beneath the massacre who just seem to be constant deafening blast beats if you ask me. Regardless, even if I don’t agree with it, I respect your opinion.

    • Narian

Eh, Alterbeast would be a more tech Black Dahlia Murder, Killitorious are too insane and varied to link them to BTM in my mind, Archspire sound nothing like Necrophagist IMHO but FYAD are definitely a good clone considering Necrophagist are pretty much defunct at this point. Deadborn is another good Necrophagist-style band who had a new album out a couple of years ago filling the void.

  • tertius_decimus

Hadal Maw made an amazing debut. Heavy guitarwork, pulsating bass, good vocals, sick solos in the vein of Nile. Sounds kinda old school and I like it.

Fallujah – simply astonishing, jaw-dropping stuff. Polyphonic structure makes you think you somehow listening to two separate records and that creates special atmosphere.

Inferi – top notch guitar work. Very diverse and rich musicianship.

  • tertius_decimus

Can’t wait to listen new Anata album. They keep deaf silence about that release. Do they actually exist?

    http://www.smnnews.com/board/showthread.php?t=187755

    • I think it’s in crowdfunding limbo

      • tertius_decimus

        Got a link?

        • Not off the top of my head, I’ll check later, I’m getting ready for work atm :/

          • tertius_decimus

            Okay.

          • actually I think they were having trouble getting a record deal, which, for the life of me I cannot fathom why.

          • tertius_decimus

            Sheer mystery.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

            Also for you, see above.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

As far as I can tell, big trouble with Earache (surprise, surprise). Not sure if with a vocalist as well. They intend to release the album, but don’t have money for vox. There was talk of setting up crowdfunding, but I am unsure if they ever did. Label troubles may be because of discouragement or Earaches slandering (they do that).

          • fucking earache. The EA of record labels.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Leõnhart

            Worse. If possible.

I can’t say for sure ’cause this is never happening. But if Earache offered me a deal, I think I’d pass. Since none of their deals have an option to get out easily.

    • Simon PhoenixKing

No new Anata makes me a sad criminal.

  • Hubert, Goat ov Doom and Void

Welp, I’m quite sure that Archspire, with the Lucid Collective, have become >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Necrophagist.

    • and after 2015 will have released more music than them.

      • Hubert, Goat ov Doom and Void

I want it, I need it. Give me my Archspires.

        • You have their first album right?

          • Hubert, Goat ov Doom and Void

Haven’t listened to it, is it similar to The Lucid Collective?

          • see for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJsBOPdQsuo

fun fact: even the masterlord likes this riff.

          • Hubert, Goat ov Doom and Void

This sounds like any other track of of The Lucid Collective but not nearly as good. I will give the record a listen or two when I feel like a weedlie and a deedlie.

          • the quality on the youtube vid isn’t the best, but that’s the first archspire song I heard. Probably also still my favorite song by them.

          • Idk if i just don’t care for tech death at all anymore, or what, but i don’t care for Archspire’s new one, but LOVVVED their debut back in the day

          • Archspire are just one type of tech death. Just wait for vale of pnath’s new record. We’re gonna get pnasty!

Haram man, haram. None shall talk like that about our sweep picking prophet Muhammed Suicmez. Wise men say that some day, when humanity will erase autotune from this planet, when no child will know who ariana grande is, He, the mighty prophet ov the mutilated stillborn will deliver to us at least 9 quality tunes which will cure cancer, gayness and backpain.

        • Vernon Gholston’s NFL Career

I think I can solve it. Is it If you keep talking about them I may have to kill you?

“This man is the only good Hendrix clone on Earth”

You misspelled Robin Trower. Just sayin.

        • Vernon Gholston’s NFL Career

Robin Trower is not a Hendrix clone. He’s in a league of his own and he fucking rules.

          • Simon PhoenixKing

Eh, I’ll give you that. Bridge of Sighs is an incredible album. But he even admitted that he was heavily influenced by Hendrix so…

          • Lacertilian

Nothing wrong with being influenced by Hendrix…

I fucking love Bridge Of Sighs. Speaking of Hendrix I bought the remasters of Rainbow Bridge and Cry Of Love today. I hope they’re good.

    • Manowar?

      • Howard Dean

        That’s also an acceptable answer.

  • Vernon Gholston’s NFL Career

Yay, tech death! I love tech death.

  • JWG

I’m not sure why this didn’t come to me sooner, but if I ever start a tech-death band I *must* name it “Ned Flanders’ Untended Garden”.

    … Because it’s full of weedly-deedlies.
