It’s streaming madness with Pallbearer and Yob!

Arkansas doom-brahs Pallbearer are streaming their new album Foundations of Burden in full! The nerds at Pitchfork got the drop on this one. Go over to their fancy-ass site to stream the album. Giving this a cursory listen, I can verify that the new album is slow, low and bangin’. The new album drops August 19th on Profound Lore. Preorder that thang here.

So far, the album seems to reward your patience. What do you think?

ALSO MORE NEW STUFF: Noisey has the premier of a new track from Yob.  It’s called “Unmask the Spectre” and if I had to categorize it, I would call it “the exact opposite of Morris Day & The Time.” This song is off the upcoming album Clearing The Path To Ascent which drops September 2nd on Neurot

Full on fucking metal man! Byah!!

      • Howard Dean

Byyyyyyaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh! Metal as fuck! Total death!

Paul Bearer has a message for all you cunting lifelovers:
“I’m Paul Bearer and You’re Not!”

Take an urn to the dome from the dead man himself.

P.S. I’m still a little amazed at how large the hype train has become for Pallbearer. They’re a good doom band, don’t get me wrong, but they have become darlings. They’re not really doing anything particularly different or better than YOB, Reverend Bizarre, or dozens of other doom or retro-doom bands out there. But they are getting massive. Pretty amazing. Shows that you can’t really ever predict how/when/why internet hype will explode for a certain band/scene.

        • W.

They got that Pitchfork name drop.

          • Bingo. Metal has gained a lot of mainstream exposure due to Pitchfork, Noisey, AV Club, etc. Generally only a few bands reap the rewards, tho.

          • W.

I mean, I’m sure the nod they gave Deafheaven was huge, Pitchfork is definitely a tastemaker amongst music critics.

          • Howard Dean

Yeah, the Pitchfork/Noisey/NPR/Sputnik connection is definitely propelling certain bands into the relative metal stratosphere of hype and popularity (most notably and recently with Pallbearer and Deafheaven).

I think I’m just sort of baffled by what bands they choose to hype, and why they decide that way. It could purely be just a matter of taste and/or timing, but I can’t help but be slightly bewildered by their choices for promotion. I mean, if they have anyone on staff worth half their weight in metal knowledge, they would undoubtedly have heard Yob and others in the doom/retrodoom scene. It’s not as though Pallbearer are reinventing the wheel (or are creating a particularly shiny and amazing new wheel).

          • W.

It’s definitely a bit strange, but at least they aren’t hyping bands that are definitely undeserving.

          • Howard Dean

            Very true.

I’m not disappointed or angry with whom they decide to cover, since I don’t often frequent their sites, and I hear about and learn about the bands I enjoy more than enough through other avenues.

I’m more or less just sort of confused about how it happens. They’re all sort of like this weird, magical, indie hype truck that catches a whiff of something, scoops it up, and feeds it unrelentingly to their readership, without exhibiting much of a frame of reference to the act’s parent genre or musical peers. I’m curious as to how they make the decisions. Is it calculated, and based upon market strategies? Is it purely based on the author’s taste? Is it random? Who knows!

          • W.

A good question, and not one I can answer.

          • I dunno. Let’s pick a band completely at random and see if we can make them famous!

          • W.

Ooh, who are we gonna promote?

          • The Electric Friends!

          • lulz

          • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

to be fair, cathedral got a real push for the ethereal mirror when earache did that merger with columbia back in the early 90’s. Entombed, carcass, cathedral , godflesh, napalm death, the obsessed were all on a major label for the first time. It was a big deal at the time, didn’t last long but something tells me that major league exposure helped all bands involved and i think if it hadn’t happened some of these great bands wouldn’t be around today. The musical climate wasn’t ready for doom then. The whole music scene is a giant role of the dice at its heart in my opinion anyways.

          • Xan

I got hyped up about Pallbearer after listening to their first album and the new single. I initially learned about them from a post on MS and finally listened to them after I read the article in the newest Decibel on them.

          • Fromwisdomtohate29

Not to sound hipster-y or anything, but I found out about and grew to love Pallbearer long before the Pitchfork backing. I get what you’re saying though. Its like with Ghost or how Goatwhore are a LOT more popular now because of Anthony Fantano’s praising of one of their albums.

          • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

thanks for adding concert dates to the site. I missed that. I liked that about the old blabbermouth that i could always count on getting concert announcement from them. Great work.

        • crazytaco_12

Completely agree. It’s a little weird to me how dismissive some sites/mags have been of certain doom releases this year *cough cough* Pilgrim *cough cough* Blood Farmers, yet proverbially (and maybe in some cases, literally) jizz their fucking pants for the new Pallbearer.

          • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

it’s like playboy, there are a lot of beautiful women who should have been playmates, but there can only be twelve a year. Are they the best looking ?, not always , but thats the way the ball bounces. Then playmate of the year, i don’t think i have ever agreed with that. Same goes for penthouse.
Many bands are beautiful, but like miss universe only one gets to wear the crown. Luckily pallbearer are legit.

          • TrickleDownTacoRiff

My playboy story. Joan Bennett 1984 January edition I believe. I went to high school with her. Her mom was a french teacher at the school. It was pretty wild.

          • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

WOW ! Did you find out about it when she did the mag or later ?. Must have been a surprise. With that story you have just eclipsed anything i have accomplished or will accomplish in my life. You knew a playboy playmate, man, that’s cool, only 12 playmates a year, that’s a select few, and back then it really meant something because there was no internet to see women. Great story, brightened my day my friend.

          • TrickleDownTacoRiff

I graduated in June of 84.. She was a year ahead never interacted with her other than a few parties and passing in the hall. A buddy dated her a few times. Of course in school she was just normal then BAM !!! lol

          • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

            hot stuff.

          • TrickleDownTacoRiff

yea everyone was blown away really. incidentally the movie Lucas was filmed at our high school about the same time with charlie sheen and corey haim. no bs it was a weird time! Glenbard West glen ellyn il.

    • Am I the only person here who HATES wrasslin’?

      • W.

        I prefer slug wrasslin’.

        • That sounds like something two dudes do with their wieners.

          • W.

Nah. Everyone gets in their sleeping bags and tries to pin each other without using their limbs.

          • Gorgasm

Ever hear of sock wrestling? Everyone wears two knee high socks and try to pry everyone else’s socks off their feet, while protecting your own. The winner is the last one with socks on.

          • JWG

My strange sport of preference is ‘Wife Carrying’.

The Estonian form looks particularly entertaining.

          • Xan

I really want a video of George W. Bush performing in a such a competition. It would be the video of the decade.

          • Cock of Steele

            It’ll be one-liner heaven

      • Gorgasm

        No…i also dislike it.

        • TrickleDownTacoRiff

          not a fan…

      • NDNOvHell

Nope. I have always disliked wrestling

        • Kevin Nash and Friends

I cannot believe your dislike of wrestling is real. Everybody loves wrestling and everybody loves me, Kevin Nash.

          • NDNOvHell

            Nope!!

          • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

if they have watched it lately i can see why no one thinks its good. When WCW died and later ECW the WWE had no competition and became lazy. But those of us who remember the mid 90’s, that was wrestling at it’s peak, wrestling will never reach those heights of popularity again.

          • Howard Dean

Conan speaks the truth. The mid-to-late 90’s were a golden age for wrestling. I happened to be at the perfect age/development level at that time to facilitate a complete wrestling infatuation, and many memories from my childhood include discussions with school friends about the nWo, Degeneration-X, The Nation of Domination, The Four Horsemen, The Brood, and the Oddities. I don’t watch it or follow it anymore, but those were some good times.

          • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

the oddities ? was that the group led by cyrus ( don callas). I remember they descended from the ceiling on a platform and cyrus was talkiing about intellectual intercourse with the audience. I got it but it was a bit too out there for the audience. He was a great talent that found a place at ecw later on. Those were the days though, i use to go to house shows, i had stone cold 3:16 , mankind , rock shirts , hats, the whole works. I was into it hardcore. I never missed an episode of wcw, wwf, ecw or whatever old stuff i could find to watch. I have been out of it for about 14 years myself.

      • Kevin Nash and Friends

Hey! Wrestling is real to me damnit considering the belts I’ve held! You’re just jealous that I’ve won championships and you haven’t.

      • probably.

one night a month, there is a local venue that hosts amateur professional wrastlin’, and it’s possibly the most fun a person can have. cheep beer, rednecks, costumes

        http://saintlouiswrestling.com/

        • Kevin Nash and Friends

There’s a wrestling federation that goes to Danbury pretty often called Inter Species Wrestling. They have a wrestler who is Cthulhu as a lawyer and they are extreme.

      • JWG

I don’t hate, but I’ve definitely slide toward the negative side of indifference over the last decade. But I can’t deny (as much as I’d like to) that I went through two definite “fan” phases.

The earliest was when I was in single-digits and every other kid was emulating Hulk Hogan, so I had to in order to fit in (though I was more a fan of Jim Duggan for whatever reason, I kept that to myself).

  • Gorgasm

Woohoo!!!! So much new DOOM, so many chipper feelings that need to be crushed.

  • W.

    I love Neurot.

    • Misanthropic Anus

      I love you baby.

      • W.

Awww, I love you too, even if you do smell funny sometimes.

        • Misanthropic Anus

          I should start using deodorant.

          • W.

Am I going crazy, or did you transform from being metaphysical to misanthropic?

          • Negrodamus

            You aren’t crazy.

          • Misanthropic Anus

            I indeed did.

  • Further Down the Metal Hole

This is fantastic stuff. I can wrap my brain around this and love it until it turns to goo.

Also, check that JAG comment on bandcamp!

    • W.

I’m digging that Yob a lot more than that Pallbearer. Sorry, NegroD.

      • I like Pallbearer, but I’m with you here. Yob can’t be beat.

        • Gorgasm

I had to speed home to check this new Yob on the home speakers.
          So worth it.
          Mike’s vocals are flawless.

        • Tyree

          Definitely agree on this.

      • Further Down the Metal Hole

Oh snap, I missed the second link. Listening now.

      • Negrodamus

I haven’t listened to either yet, but I am hoping to listen to Pallbearer today! No need to apologize, I’d like to also check out Yob.

    • ah! there’s our man JAG. so proud.

      • W.

        For the curious:

        • I hate JAG. What kind of self-centered fuckstick posts under their own full name anyway? It’s like he thinks he’s a poet or something.

          • CÖÄL RÖLL FRÖM THE TÖILET BÖWL

Yeah who does that JAGoff think he is?

  • Gorgasm

    More Mike Monday!!!

    Here’s Mike with Red Fang.

  • Cock of Steele

me: “Oh this band YOB is reputed to be very good doom metal, and if it’s one thing I love it’s very good doom metal!” (Checks album out, likes the band, looks up band, looks up their history, sees the amount of albums they’ve released, cries because I know I’m going to wind up buying ALL of those albums when I’m trying to save up) Thus the price I pay.

    • Start with Atma.

      • Cockypock Aioli

I respectfully disagree MSD. While Atma is great, Illusion of Motion is one of the great achievements of doom and in my opion the best Yob.

        • Fromwisdomtohate29

I prefer The Unreal Never Lived, but Illusion is a close second.

          • Cockypock Aioli

They’re all so good. Catharsis is great if I want something kinda jazzy on.

    • Xan

Fucking hell, I did the same thing.

    • not a fan of Yob, but i AM a fan of VHOL! (Mike Scheidt on vocals.) this is track #1 from their self-titled debut, one of 2013’s best albums, PERIOD!

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QENyul1-S6I

      • Cock of Steele

I really opened a can of worms haha. Tbh though, I found a happy medium in modern stoner/doom with Church of Misery. I fuckin love that band.

        • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

my favorite song is reverend ( i may be wrong on the title, its on my ipod which i haven’t touched for a year). I wish that song would last forever. The jim jones speech from the end days of the peoples temple is mesmerizing on its own, but with the music it’s a thing of true poetic beauty.

          • Cock of Steele

I first found them at the store, “Master of Brutality” it was, I bought it cuz Ithought I was getting some nice DM, it wasn’t death metal, but an awesome buy nevertheless.

          • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

Best use of samples since mortician. How the music weaves into the samples is what makes CoM something really extraordinary.

          • Cock of Steele

Dude, ever listened to El Padrino? That was some twisted sounds.

    • crazytaco_12

Saw them just this past Saturday, they were fucking great, I highly recommend checking out The Great Cessation album, Atma is really good too, but “Burning the Altar” has to be one of the best doom songs of all time

      • Cock of Steele

Just listened to it, you guys are killing me, but I had to buy it haha. I only feel guilty cuz I went out on Saturday and got Annihilation of the Wicked, Master’s second album, and Into the Pandemonium, all of which cost a hefty sum. There’s no end man.

    • Fromwisdomtohate29

The band that Mike formed after disbanding Yob originally Middian/Age Eternal was really good too. They only released one album though. It would’ve been cool if he had kept that band together and pulled double duty with Yob. It’d be interesting to see the different musical directions the two bands would’ve gone in ala Godflesh/Jesu.

      • Cockypock Aioli

As I post about Middian, I see that you beat me to it by a couple minutes. I had the awesome pleasure of seeing Middian back when they were around, it was rad.

    • Cockypock Aioli

The single album from his short-lived, 2007ish offshoot band Middian is a murky banger of trudging doomery.

  • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

Very nice! I’d imagine this’d be about lkke having your brain split with a slice o’ lemon (wrapped around a gold bar that is)

  • Kevin Nash and Friends

This is what happened when Paul Bearer found out about the Streak being broken..

Paul: “Undertaker, it’s the ghost of Paul Bearer. Is the streak still ali” ‘what Warrior'”?
    Warrior: “The streak is dead”
Paul:”Wait, what happened to the streak?”
    Warrior: “It’s dead”
Paul: “I don’t believe you Warrior!”
Warrior: Watch this footage Paul, it’s from the last Wrestlemania.”
Paul:”He’s going to kick out…Noooooooooooo! Why Undertaker, Why did you let that MMA douche Brock Lesnar and his slimeball manager Paul Heyman conquer the streak?”
Warrior: “Don’t blame me, it was Vince McMahon’s idea.”
Paul: “If you need me Warrior, I’m going to be haunting McMahon”

  • dingus

This rattled my life so hard I needed to poop really badly once it was over

  • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

i thought these 2 albums would break doom metal into the big time. It wasn’t cathedrals time but it looks like pallbearer are going to make the big time, and it’s for all the right reasons as well.
Those cathedral album covers though, i don’t think we will see their like again.

    • Gorgasm

They look like the same artist who did Electric Wizard’s S/T album art.

      • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

its the same guy, dave patchett, he also did orange goblin frequencies from planet 10. Amazing stuff.

        • Cock of Steele

Senior year of high school right fucking there.

    • Kevin Nash and Friends

I found my signed copy of Cross Purposes by Black Sabbath in my house. It’s signed by the lineup at the time of the album when I saw them tour the album. It’s signed by Tony Martin, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler who was a really nice guy, Bobby Rondinelli who was also really nice and Geoff Nicholls who signed it begrudgingly and was an asshole. I also used to have a signed copy of the album after that which was Forbidden but it was only signed by Tony Martin, Tony Iommi and whoever replaced Geezer Butler on bass for that album. Geoff Nicholls would not sign it and neither would Cozy Powell who played drums on the album. I threw the album away after listening to it because it was so bad.

  • Kevin Nash and Friends

Did you know that Robin Williams died today? He did and if the WBC even attempt to attempt to attempt to attempt to attempt to attempt to protest his funeral I can’t guarantee I’m going to be real professional with what will be done to them.To describe what they will look like when they find them is impossible because where they were found would be a monolith, a fucking temple to how violent we are as a species. If any mortal man tried to look at it they would be driven insane and would immediately commit suicide. Satan himself would give up and say “I can’t top that. Nothing I can do, no matter how evil would ever top that.” Barbaric and savage are the understatements of the millenium of how bad it would be. There would be no physical way to describe it.

    • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

You can count on me for backup man. That’s one hell of a great speech.

      • Kevin Nash and Friends

You missed it yesterday. I retained my title against Ahmed Johnson and went to this restaurant for Hulk Hogan’s birthday with the best french dip I have ever had. It was me, Ahmed, Scott, Shawn, X Pac, the New Age Outlaws, Triple H with Stephanie McMahon, Jimmy Hart and of course Hulk Hogan. A few people arrived late, like Scott Steiner, Kane, Vince, Mick Foley and Konnan but Kurt Angle, the Iron Sheik and Roddy Piper didn’t show up. The Nasty Boys were there for a little while, but then they had to leave suddenly when their car got towed. From what I can tell, Bret Hart, the Bella Twins, Torrie Wilson and Stacy Keibler also showed up but I was so drunk by that point I’m not sure when they arrived.

      • Kevin Nash and Friends

Also Conan, did you hear about this guy and what he did? Let’s just say that if I ever see him, that the stuff I would do to the WBC would look like a kiddie movie compared to what I’d do to this guy. This guy deserves a bullet to the head.

        http://deadspin.com/christy-mack-posts-photos-account-of-alleged-beating-b-1619683970/all

        • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

Fuck, i just looked, i agree with the bullet, i hope she has some friends that are going to set this right and make this guy dissapear. No doubt she has biker friends who could beat the shit out of this fuck and get away with it. There should be no mention of what she does for a living, the media tries to make it look like because she makes adult movie she is less important than other women. I don’t believe in even raising my voice to a girl, maybe its the way i was raised. Take away all the roids and most of the fighters are nobodys. Pathetic. A guy who hits women isn’t a man in my book.

Like i said it’s going to be disheartening to me if someone doesn’t step up old school and take care of this. If anyone attacked my wife, girlfriend, sister, aunt, fuck, the girl across the street i hardly know i would go pound the motherfucking shit out of the cocksucker, damn the consequences.

          • Kevin Nash and Friends

I agree with your idea, someone should make this man disappear as he has done it before to someone else who also did adult movies and he got arrested and convicted for it. He’s a psychopath and he needs to be killed like an animal because that’s what he is, an animal.

  • TrickleDownTacoRiff

Ive tried with Pallbearer lord knows Ive tried. Ok then Im going in one last time. I vow to set aside 10 hours this weekend to listen to them. I figure that’ll get me through at least 3 songs…
