SRiHKAL 2015 – Short Releases I Have Known And Loved (Part Two)

There was a veritable glut of intoxicating short-releases that made their way into my bloodstream during the past year and I’m going to take some time to share a few of them with you. Carrying on in the tradition of Alexander & Ann Shulgin’s ground-breaking work with PiHKAL and TiHKAL, I bring you SRiHKAL (Short Releases I Have Known And Loved, 2015). Here, in Part Two, I’ve got some hyper melodic-tech/prog, anti-human black metal, retro stoner-rock, and some of the best UK death metal released this year.

In addition to the numerous other EPs, demos and various other small offerings from other bands I’ve covered throughout the year (Sewercide (OSDM), Sanzu (death/groove), Skullreader (dissonant black/death), Thrall (crusty BM), Makavrah (doom), Caecus (grindy death), Sequestered Keep (dungeon synth), Acherontas/Horna (ritualistic BM), etc.), I realised there were still a plethora of great little recordings like these from 2015 that shouldn’t go unmentioned. Ingest these at your own risk.

    • Lacertilian

I really like the 2nd and 3rd tracks on that EP.

      • Oh, okay, and the first track is chopped liver? Some reptiles…

        • Lacertilian

          I love liver.

          • Your liver was asking for it–that filthy-minded little tramp!

          • more beer

Only 18 years. It has many more years of abuse left in it. Cheers!

          • YourLogicIsFlushed

Finally got a chance to check out some posts I missed this week. I am digging the Atlas Entity, and also the format of these articles. I hope to see more of these in the future!

          • Lacertilian

Cheers man, Altas Entity was one of the handful of techy sounding releases I could get into last year. Some nice riffs in there.

  • Sorry, I have to get this out of the way. NEW INVERLOCH SONG!

For those that don’t know, this band consists of members from legendary funeral doom/death metal band Disembowelment. Disembowelment was one of the first Relapse bands way back in the day. Inverloch fucking kill! Lots of dread.

    • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

      This is some good shit!

      • Fuck yes! So stoked for this release. I’ve been waiting 3 years and this new song does not disappoint.

        • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

They really nailed the atmosphere on this song.

          • Absolutely man. No complaints from me. The production is perfect too. Sounds really big but still remains raw, especially on the drums.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

And they also nicely switch it up with the vocals. A lot of death-doom/funeral doom can get a bit too samey. But this one has actually good dynamics.

          • Good shit man. Really good shit!!! New Evoken would be the icing on the cake now.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Oh yeah. Atra Mors was really fucking good.

          • Top 3 release for me from 2012.

  • is it discriminatory to think that @disqus_p2fcvVDyRD:disqus is going to like Skunk, just from their band logo?

    • Dude…what?

We all know kjm likes that skunky shit

        • Lacertilian

Don’t we all, don’t we all.

        • more beer

Skunk # 1 was the gold standard of the green in the 80’s!

          • Even people I knew who could get all kinds of exotic herb back then almost never had Skunk #1. That usually involved travelling to Vermont, New Hampshire, or Maine.

          • more beer

I didn’t have to travel that far. I could find it in and around NYC. It just wasn’t always available. It is what I was smoking in Amsterdam in 84.

          • I was usually happy to settle for the Lamb’s Bread, Vermont Indica, or Thai that was always around back then, lotsa hash too.

    • Music’s good, vocals are a bit much.

      • Bosse de Hosse Rosse

I’m checking them out later. What do you mean in reference to the vocals?

        • Vocals are a bit too grating.

          • Lacertilian

The fun lyrics bring it back to a happy medium for me.

          • Bosse de Hosse Rosse

Hmm… I can understand that. I like the vocals, but i do think there is room for improvement. A little more practice, and a more polished recording and they could rock.

And dagummit! That Wizard Bong riff rips!

          • Bosse de Hosse Rosse

I just finished the “first” series of Doctor Who with Eccleston. I liked it, looking forward to Capaldi. I’ve got a bit to go before him though.

          • Yeah, just a bit…

    • Janitor Jim Duggan

Skunk is great. They should make a full length album, put it on 8 track and vinyl and go on tour with Grand Funk and Captain Beyond.

  • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

    Barghest be killin’
Vavicus has a killer production, love the rumble of that bass.

    • Lacertilian

I was pretty surprised not to hear much talk about that Vacivus both throughout and at the end of last year. So fucking good.

      • currently jamming. it’s top-shelf. guess i should have taken @webb71:disqus ‘s word for it…

        • Lacertilian

Along with Cruciamentum and Abyssal, I think it was one of THE BEST releases from the UK in 2015.

      • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Seen the name thrown around on this here Ghost Doggie, but don’t recall checking it out before.

Vavicus I vaguely recalled the name for.

        • Sir Tapir The Based

          I have an OT question:
Have you noticed that Levykauppa X can’t get pre-orders in time? Last year I got one of my pre-orders on the date it was supposed to arrive. Every other time I received an email about how they were unable to get the album for the release date. This happened many fucking times. Looks like they’re continuing this method as my Bowie album has still not been sent and it’s released tomorrow. FUCKING FUCKITY FUCK.

          • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Yes. My Hooded Menace pre-order took almost a month to arrive. Thwy did say ot was a problem with the tukku, but it’s not the only time it has happened.
            I rarely pre-order anymore – unless it’s going to be a bargain.

          • Sir Tapir The Based

I wonder if their tukku fucks up, or are their workers top busy smoking da ganja to send the albums out.

          • Paddlin’ Rites ov Beargod

Their varastoale news-letter seemed to suggest the latter – their employess order too much stuff, and send none out.

  • Bosse de Hosse Rosse

You name dropped Sabbath, Leaf Hound and Captain Beyond… I’m sold.

Leaf Hound! I can’t believe i read that.

    • Janitor Jim Duggan

      Yay, Captain Beyond!

      • Bosse de Hosse Rosse

And a classic album it is!

What did you think of Skunk?

  • Sweet Satan, that Vacivus album is on 3 other Bandcamp pages. They get around 😉

    • Vacivus kicks ass. I’ve heard the name and seen the artwork but never listened to em. Sounds killer.

      • Lacertilian

I mentioned that art a few months back when we were talking about simplistic yet effective art.

  • frozengoatsheadupanunsarse

The barghest is a monstrous dog found especially in Yorkshire, and so I think would be uncomfortable in Louisiana. Band sounds triffic though.

    • Dubs

Is it like the beast of Bray Road?

      • frozengoatsheadupanunsarse

The barghest is more of a fiendish entity, descended from old European mythology, where the beast of Bray Road I think is supposed to be some kind of obscure but “real” creature.

  • Nativian Taco

    I’m digging Barghest. Good shit.

  • Scrimm

    Some of this aint bad.

    • Lacertilian

      I’ll take it!

  • Janitor Jim Duggan

That Skunk album is good shit

    • Bosse de Hosse Rosse

      Yeah it is!

  • Óðinn

  • Eliza

While I don’t dislike any of these, I think I really like Skunk.
