Kvarforth is accused of drugging a woman’s drink, slapping an audience member, and threatening to stab a person, in addition to other alleged actions.

Noted edgelords Shining (SWE) are currently touring the US with Revenge and Wolvhammer for the “No More Safe Space Tour.” It seems the try-hard titling of this tour was a harbinger of things to come, much like a Donald Trump tweet complaining about Hillary Clinton only to be turned around and reflect hilariously poorly on him every time he does the exact thing he complained about. On May 14th, the band played at a Boise, Idaho venue named The Shredder. The show reportedly did not go well. Shining vocalist Niklas Kvarforth has been accused of:

1. Drugging a person’s drink
2. Groping women
3. Threatening to stab people
4. Threatening an audience member with rape
5. Slapping an audience member
6. Using racist and homophobic slurs during their set
7. Seig heiling

Security footage, purportedly from outside The Shredder, shows what appears to be an angry Kvarforth grabbing someone outside the venue. He also appears to throw a nazi salute at 0:11.

Tonic Lounge, a venue in Portland, OR got wind of Shining’s antics and cancelled the show. On Facebook, the venue posted in great detail about the incident:

“Tonic Lounge has decided to cancel the Shining show that was scheduled for this Wednesday, May 17th. All tickets will be refunded. We regret having not researched this band more before approving their show. After booking them, it was brought to our attention that Shining’s singer has done and said many things that could be considered offensive, dangerous, or destructive. While we were learning about and considering these issues, the list continued to grow, including a recent report that the he may have been involved in the drugging of someone’s drink. This morning we received a call from a trusted friend in Boise Idaho, detailing the events that took place while Shining were there on Sunday. We were told that the singer of Shining went to the local punk bar Mulligans before their concert, and was groping women and threatening to stab employees, and had to be removed. We were also told that later, while performing at The Shredder, he used many blatant racist and homophobic slurs on stage, threatened audience members with rape, slapped audience members in the face, and was sieg heil saluting repeatedly throughout their performance. Sometimes words and allegations on the internet can be difficult to navigate, but a story like this coming from a friend is not. The above types of behavior are simply not acceptable at Tonic Lounge. This isn’t about censorship. This is about protecting our venue, our staff, and our patrons. This decision was not made under pressure by any individuals or political groups. We believe in freedom of expression and are not quick to pull the plug on any band booked at our club. However, we are not going to invite someone into our space to spout hate speech on our stage, and/or put our staff and patrons in harm’s way. We are still in full support of Famine Fest Presents, the other bands who were on the bill, and all of our friends and customers who planned on attending. We hope you all can respect our decision to do what’s best for our club and those within it.”

Following up on Tonic Lounge’s post, The Shredder had this to say:

“Big ups to Chris and the Tonic Lounge in Portland for making a choice decision! No need to put up with bigotry and childish bullshit. Especially from an individual that only preys on the weaker people in attendance”

As a funny aside, the venue posted this on the event’s page prior to Shining’s set, which is probably just a super appropriate typo:

At the time of this posting, Shining has not commented on their Facebook or Twitter pages about the incident or the cancelled show. Their tour continues tonight in Seattle.

  • Mosh Hoff

Idiot edgelord is a dumbass; Earth spins.

    • I thought Trump was gonna keep this foreign criminal element out of our borders.

      • Mosh Hoff

Uuuuh, hello? He’s white, there’s no such thing as a white criminal.

        • He talks funny though.

          • Óðinn

He also dresses funny. Don’t forget about that.

        • Riboflavin dreams

He wears a headband, though. Only evil terror people wear headbands.

  • Waynecro

Kvarforth has a reputation for doing stupid, outlandish shit, so this is hardly surprising. I saw Shining a while back and was surprised that Kvarforth actually behaved (though he may have spit in someone’s hat).

    • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I think Kvarforth already crossed over from “edgelord” into full on “lowlife scumbag” territory waaaaaayyyyyyyy back.
He does make great music whenever he feels like it tho (imo of course).

      • Waynecro

Yeah, Kvarforth has been a human garbage fire for a long time, but Shining has some good jams.

        • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Yeah, Eerie Cold and Halmstad are “THE” shit. I own both albums, but I don’t think I’d ever pay money to see the guy perform live.
The edginess is a bit too sharp.

          • Waynecro

I seem to recall reading that Kvarforth has some pretty severe mental illnesses and has been on and off various medications over the years. I’m not saying this explains or excuses his behavior, but it probably plays some role. I certainly don’t condone his antics, but I can’t help but feel for folks struggling with ill mental health.

          • GoatForest

That’s true, but he seems to be hamming it up in IMO.

          • Waynecro

He probably is. Plus, if he’s mentally ill and on medication, he should take it easy on all the substance abuse.

      • GoatForest

Oh yeah. I definitely separate the man from the music. Shining is one of my top ten favorite bands, I wouldn’t call 911 if Kvarforth was dying in front of me.

        • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

There’s quite a few bands whose music I like a great deal, despite (one or more of) the members being dirtbags I’d probably end up punching in the face if I’d ever get into a serious conversation with them.
Most of the times their buffoonery doesn’t directly shine through in their art though. Of course, sometimes it does, which results in me feeling slightly guilty whenever I buy the more “questionable” stuff.

          • GoatForest

Yeah, when their imbecilic views are directly reflected in their music, I dodge an artist. Especially when it involves racism, misogyny, and politics.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Usually I try to dodge those kind of bands as well, but I can only admit to owning stuff by Arghoslent and Grand Belial’s Key. I guess the personal, signature sound those bands have, coupled with their “cult classic” status proved to be too irresistable for me; seeing I’m a big sucker for both “signature sound” as well as “cult classic status” in metal. Aside from that, I know the albums I own by Silencer, Lord Mantis or Infester have a few sketchy lyrics but those are few and far between and in Silencer’s and Lord Mantis’ case it’s obviously more used to promote the “edgelord” content and Infester were just a bunch of edgy kids out to shock people when they recorded the album as well.
The Nokturnal Mortum and Destroyer 666 albums I own, as far as I know, don’t have any significant bigot lyrics – though in D666’s case it can be a bit more implied.
There’s also pagan/folk metal bands, as well as atmospheric black metal ones, I own stuff by that give off a “proud to be (Scandinavian/British/Irish)” vibe, but that’s not outright bigotry in my book.

In general, I do try to avoid that NSBM stuff. And to be honest, I haven’t really found a lot to my interest in that scene from a purely musical point of view either. Most of those bands have a sound that has already been done before and better by other bands.

          • GoatForest

I can get that. I own a D666 album and a few Burzum album. However, in Burzum’s case the music is completely separate from the man. Still though…

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I own a few Burzum albums as well. Huge fan of his classic albums.
I think Varg himself is almost as tragic as he’s anything else really. I mean, the dude – despite that I don’t think he’s a complete dumbass intelligence-wise – has been bullshitting for so long he actually started to believe whatever bullshit he’s selling. Every time I see him walking around that forest, chopping wood…actually TRYING to almost live the way people used to live when society was still a lot more primitive over in Europe…I kinda find it difficult to surpress laughter.

          • CyberneticOrganism

Those ridiculous videos of his have long since plunged into Tommy Wiseau levels of unaware self-parody

          • Hesh

Fortunately I can’t stand Black Metal so I don’t have to do this balancing act.

          • GoatForest

Well, that’s a point for your tastes, at least.

          • GoatForest

I own a few Christian metal albums. 🙁

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

You’re not alone in this regard either. Top of my head I own Saviour Machine’s debut s/t, Paramaecium’s Exhumed of the Earth and I own two Zao albums as well.

Strangely enough I think Zao, despite being a “Christian metalcore band”, is the only metalcore band that ever really had the same dark, menacing feel some of the more malicious death, black or doom bands had. At least on classic albums like Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest or Liberate Te Ex Inferis.

          • GoatForest

Check this out. It’s a Christian metal band called Virgin Black. Christian or not they’re grade A death/doom.
            https://youtu.be/wlw-KQyCymc

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Good band. Only ever listened to their debut and the Mezzo Forte album though. Never checked the album above out. I don’t own any of their albums either. Possibly because the bombastic operatic kind of stuff in metal can be a bit hit or miss for me personally.

          • GoatForest

That’s very fair. Symphonic elements in metal can be really good, but it’s usually cheesier than a pizza.

          • Good band.

          • Hubert

A few years ago I had no problem listening to questionable stuff, but lately I can’t really get over the discomfort of listening to something like that. There’s a lot of great music out there and I’d rather jam something that I know was made by decent people.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Personally I gave up on the “this artist I like is a great dude” a long time ago. Not only in regards to metal. Eric Clapton for instance is a musician I grew up with and he’s a first class douchebag.
I think everyone is free in how to approach this. I can totally understand people not wanting to spend their money on music that has been made by an artist they know is a scumbag. I think people should be free to listen to and buy whatever music they want to listen to and buy, even if this includes music made by dirtbag artists.

  • ChuggaChuggaDeedleyDoo

Good luck with that visa application for your next U.S. tour

  • sweetooth0

this is 100% consistent with Kvaforth’s schtick. Nothing to see here, moving on.

  • Megan Alexandra

This was probably the first tour announcement that made me literally lol when I saw it. Tough guys!!!

    • Jimmy Calhoun

I’d gladly see Revenge live, but I’m unfamiliar with/indifferent to Wolvhammer, and Shining is pretty much off the list.

  • Howard Dean

Shining/Kvarforth have always been the epitome of cringe in black metal. He has sometime tried to portray suicide and depression and weakness as “cool” and “tough,” which is all sorts of stupid

    Revenge though >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Unfortunate Oregon fans had to miss out on the Ross Bay madmen.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VbYXX6xNKs

    • Wet W’s Whistle

I’d def go see Revenge, Safe Spaces silliness aside.

      • Howard Dean

Me too. In a second. Would love to see James Read bash the kit in real life. No one drums like that dude.

        • Wet W’s Whistle

He’s one of my faves. If Axis of Advanced reformed, that would be awesome.

          • Howard Dean

Yeah, that band ruled. Obey is one of my favorite black/death/war/bestial/whatever albums. I wouldn’t mind seeing Blood Revolt reform, as well.

Pretty much everything Read has touched is awesome. Death Worship is still one of the best things I’ve heard this year (definitely most listened to of ’17 thus far).

          • Wet W’s Whistle

Obey is fantastic. I usually just call them war metal, though they don’t much sound like other war metal bands.

I got a Rites of Thy Degringolade demo track in my email some months ago. Apparently they are working on new stuff.

          • Dave Vincent’s Perm
          • Jimmy Calhoun

Who knew they could do slow shit so well? Damn…

          • Dave Vincent’s Perm

I think a lot of the riffs used by Axis and Sacramentary (particularly the latter) were essentially funeral doom riffs played at the speed of black metal. I mean just listen to the guitars about 3 minutes into this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgC6ozEwyvM

      • Old Man Doom

        Wolvhammer is great too.

    • CyberneticOrganism

“I hate you guys. You should all just kill yourselves, it would be awesome. Suicide is so fucking cool, brah.”

      – a dickslap

  • Dumpster Lung

Wow. I’d heard this guy was an asshole, but fucking shit. Drugging someone’s drink? Holy fuck.

    • Jordan Sparks

There’s no tangible proof of this claim, anywhere.

  • I don’t doubt he was sieg heiling onstage, but that ‘nazi salute’ at :11 in the above video is pretty damn weak. Looks more like a dismissive wave of sorts.

    • Howard Dean

Yeah, same. No doubt he has probably done it before for the sake of the almighty edge, but that doesn’t really look like one at :11. If it was, it was the most half-hearted and half-baked one ever.

    • atchdav
    • Yeah, it looked to me like he was doing a general waving gesture or something.

    • Óðinn

Respectfully disagree. It could have been a Nazi salute. Most people don’t lift their arm up their chest before a spontaneous “dismissive wave”. Either way, I don’t think anybody would be surprised to know that Kvarforth has Nazi beliefs.

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I think the actual sieg heils were being thrown on stage. To me, the gesture in the video doesn’t really look like a nazi salute. It more reminds me of those aggressive arm wavings broish knuckledraggers do when they’re having a soon-to-be-turned-physical argument while being coked up to their eyeballs. I’ve seen this happen a lot at bars.

  • Hans

He’s up to something right now, look at him eyeing that headline

  • Niklas, do the TovH podcast

    • /sidenote

I listened to the MS podcast from this/last week bc 18 Visions signer was on … dude, that thing was a train wreck. Straight garbage/cringe.

Needless to say, keep up your good work!

      • I do love a good train wreck! I wanna listen.

      • Sid Vicious Promos

I remember 18 Visions. I’ll give their new album a shot.

  • AndySynn

At one point I also believe he was heard yelling:

    “WUBALUBADUBDUB!!!”

    • Hesh

Leave Rick Sanchez out of this!

      • AndySynn

Ha, this is in reference to a surprisingly long-running joke from last year when IO did an interview with Niklas, and someone pointed out it was infinitely more fun to read the whole thing in the voices of Rick and Morty… which I then ran with and created a number of “Nik and Morty” memes just for my own (and, subsequently, others’) amusement.

        • BobLoblaw

            This is brilliant.

          • BobLoblaw

Obviously Roiland did the voice acting (put it out about a year ago with some loose storyboarding) but everything else was fan made. Pretty amazing.

          • KJM = MJK

Yep, I’ve seen the original a bunch of times, crazy that this is taken from an actual case.

          • AndySynn

I did indeed. That was partially an inspiration for the whole shebang actually. I’ll see if I can dig some of them out…

  • Kvaforths gonna Kvaforth

  • Dental_Damnation

Just saw them in Vancouver last night. I saw him rinse his do-rag in an alley puddle filled with piss and cigarette butts and then proceed to put it on his head and go back in the venue. Looked like he had a touch of the pink-eye as well.

The NO MORE SAFE SPACE tour name reeks of fedoras and MRAs

    • Hesh

And little to no female attendance.

      • Austin Hart

You mean all metal in general?

        • Hesh

Most of the Metal shows I go to are usually at least 30% women.

          • GoatForest

I went to a Superjoint show two years ago. It was half women.

          • Hesh

All the Ozzfests I’ve been to were packed with women.

          • Jimmy Calhoun

Crowds at Oakland shows are generally about a third female as well.

          • KJM = MJK

            Oakland, CA?

    • Pierre Generic

Sounds like the tour offers free neckbeard trimmings and vape-flavor tastings.
