Brought to you by  Craniums™ – “‘The Brain’s Choice’: 540 million years and counting”.

Last week was our half-yearly giveaway round, featuring your favourite riffs of 2017 so far, and although we only had a few submissions, the battle was intense. Toilet ov Hell favourites Winds Of Leng had a strong lead until some favourable social media shares from the Paganizer camp brought home the victory by the slimmest of margins. Newcomer Hogan taking the competition by the neck and/or genitals and winning the half-yearly mystery prize on first attempt by just a single vote!

This week we’re getting skeletal. We asked for riffs from albums featuring a skull on the cover, and as we only got sent 8 of the 843061 metal albums that meet this particular criterion, we’ll probably do this one again sometime in the future. Don’t forget to use the PROMO CODE SLOP after voting to receive your complimentary organic cleansing session for the email inbox of your choice*.

Eliza

Megadeth – “Rattlehead” (Riff @ 0:38)

The riff starts at 0:38 and is part of a track that is one of the highlights of an album full of awesome riffs, which also has a very silly and obviously fake plastic skull on the cover.

TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

The Skull – “The Skull” (Riff @ 5:34)

You want skulls, Toilet Ov Hell? You need skulls? Well, your good ol’ pal Mr Milfs is here with your skull fix. This one is called “The Skull”, by a band called The Skull, from the EP The Skull. A sweet Trouble cover (featuring former Trouble singer Eric Wagner), with all the clean guitars, baritone vocals and snail paced power chords that you have come to love from the genre, picking up the pace a little past halfway through the song, and finally, the brilliant doom riff that comes @5:34 to close it all.

Hans

Evil Army – “My Rage Unleashed” (Riff @ 0:52)

Been looking for an excuse to send this one in, so I’m glad that this EP has about five and a half skulls on the cover. This band plays awesome thrash. The riff at 0:52 is catchy as hell. That is all.

Richter

Black Cilice – “Boiling Corpses” (Riff @ 28:53)

I WILL NOT FORGET TO SUBMIT A SKULL RIFF
I WILL NOT FORGET TO SUBMIT A SKULL RIFF
I WILL NOT FORGET TO SUBMIT A SKULL RIFF
I WILL NOT FORGET TO SUBMIT A SKULL RIFF
I WILL NOT FORGET TO SUBMIT A SKULL RIFF
I WILL NOT FORGET TO TIMESTAMP THE SKULL RIFF @ 28:53 WHERE IT GOES JUN, JUN-JUN-JUN-JUN, JUN-JUN-JUN-JUN WHILE IT ALSO GOES WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHWAAAAAAAHWAAAAA.

Jay Majesty

Horrendous – “Monarch” (Riff @ 1:21)

This is absolute killer riff from a great band.  Every time I hear this song I want to stage dive off my desk while playing air guitar.  Yes its the classic HM-2 sound but Horrendous is able to make this riff sound unique.

xtuffxghostx

Agoraphobic Nosebleed – “Dead Battery” (Riff @ 0:27)

Scott Hull is a riff machine and that’s all there is to say.

Ted Nu-Djent

Ministry – “Burning Inside” (Riff @ 0:38)

38 seconds in the main riff of the song starts. This album is 28 years old this year gosh darnit and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t still sound as fresh as a daisy. Latter day Ministry may be a bit patchy but back from The Land of Rape & Honey through to Psalm 69 Uncle Al was on top of his game. Hard to believe that these guys started as a synth pop band.

Yarnhawk

Seer – “Acid Witch” (Riff @ 3:15)

This riff is a good and not a bad.  That is all.

Lacertilian

Balmog – “Der Flvche” (Riff @ 2:50)

Legend has it that if on the third night of an Autumnal waxing crescent moon you listen to this hypnotic riff loop, while absentmindedly staring at the album cover, you’ll get a very mystical headache.

  • Was wondering why my submission from Cut Up’s newest album (which has like FIVE skulls on the cover) wasn’t included. Then I checked my email and there it was, in the drafts folder, unsent. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b5aa73a9cf1b3d0799424af9bd28a947a8d6528607c9dfb858ecd94cf02754b7.gif

    • BobLoblaw

At least you didnt get embarrassed publicly by having your submission posts sans the link you forgot.

  • Strapping Old Fart

Without actually being arsed to listen to any of the riffs i gather the Milfs have a solid case… but Mr. Richter’s riff sounds absolutely gorgeous. Also the Milfs should be a baseball team.

    • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

I think the Milfs should be a women’s wrestling team. And I’m not saying that because I just finished watching GLOW this morning

      • The Arm(KJM)

        I hear it’s great.

        • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

It’s pretty entertaining. At first I thought it was gonna be the same thing as OITNB (slowly moving the plot along while also showing the backstories of the characters), but the show kind of finds it voice after the 3rd or 4th episode

        • Janitor Jim Duggan

I love the show as well. It’s very funny.

  • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Have my vote, Ted. Ministry used to bring the riffs back in the good old days.

PS: Winds of Leng should have won last week.

    • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

And TMIATTTT is their best album

      • Ted Nü-Djent ™

I won’t argue, though I do love me some Psalm 69

  • ME GORAK™✓ᶜᵃᵛᵉᵐᵃⁿ
    • GoatForest

If it had been the opening riff, I’d been right there with you. Sorry, Eliza.

      • Eliza

        Oh, come on!

        • The Arm(KJM)

          You got my vote anyways.

          • Eliza

            Aww, thanks!

  • The Arm(KJM)
  • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

I’m voting for Eliza, because no matter how many dumb or horrible things Dave Mustaine says, my love for Megadeth has remained strong

  • Señor Jefe El Rossover

    Bullshit.

    • more beer

      Why?

      • Señor Jefe El Rossover

        Winds of Leng should’ve won.

        • The Arm(KJM)

I hear ya. At least it was a close vote.

          • Señor Jefe El Rossover

            True that

        • more beer

I agree their Scrimms band fucking rips!

          • Señor Jefe El Rossover

            I love it

          • more beer

I listened to it with a certain dead composer and his band a couple of weeks ago. We were all in agreement about how good it is. It has gotten a bunch of plays by me in the following weeks.

          • Señor Jefe El Rossover

That’s so cool! Stocky and the boys are good people.

          • more beer

No doubt, it was a fun night and a good show.

          • more beer

I think you will love this as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ7jyAK43Wc

          • Scrimm

They were great live a few nights ago

          • more beer

I saw them last summer and will be seeing them again in about 3 weeks.

          • Señor Jefe El Rossover

I do indeed! This album is intense, and very dirty sounding

          • more beer

That band fucking rules. Gonna see them on the 23rd with Sphecteral Voice.

          • Señor Jefe El Rossover

Nice! I bet they will be good. Gonna have to check some dates to see if they make it down here.

        • Eliza

They are number 1 in our hearts.

    • The Arm(KJM)

      Why so glum, chum?

      • Señor Jefe El Rossover

        The wrong band won!

        • Eliza

          Life’s not fair.

    • Ted Nü-Djent ™

      Because Lock Up didn’t win?

  • Howard Dean

That Megadeth riff should stand as victor this week, with the Horrendous, Seer, and Ministry ones close behind. MegaDave was a top riffmeister c. 1982-1992.

    • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

To this day he’ll still come up with a sweet riff. In fact, I thought about submitting a riff from Dystopia for RotW Best of 2016 (eventually I opted for a Melt Banana riff that I never submitted because I couldn’t find the song online anywhere)

      • Ted Nü-Djent ™

I submitted a riff from Dystopia once. I did not go well.

        • Óðinn

Dystopia rarely goes well. Otherwise, it might not be dystopia.

    • Megadead™

Megadeth will finally win it after 12 nominations.

      • Howard Dean

I hope so. I remember Jimmy McNulty submitted “Holy Wars…” when we did a thrash riff of the week a few years ago, which narrowly lost to the Demolition Hammer riff I submitted. Megadeth is long overdue to win one of these.

        • Megadead™

It’ll probably be in the context of “Riff of the Week: Best Megadeth Riff” edition. lol

  • GoatForest

Well, Richter, you have my vote. It’s black metal. It’s always been black metal. I’ll see you at the party.

    • ME GORAK™✓ᶜᵃᵛᵉᵐᵃⁿ
      • GoatForest

Say what you will: Lambesis is a piece of shit, but ADM was generally some quality stuff.

  • GoatForest

I almost submitted a riff from my band’s album. We have, like a thousand skulls on the cover. But I thought that would be self-aggrandizing. Regardless, the art by Elias Aquino is the shit, though: https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/112a3fd592925c12fa09eb8aa8e5c453b4701eb02f6c5b4a6b712f9561c99395.jpg

    • Eliza

This is some legit album art.

      • GoatForest

Aquino is awesome. I’m still astounded and honored he agreed to do it.

        • Eliza

I’m checking out some of his other works on FB. He really is awesome.

    • more beer

What is the name of your band Goat?

      • GoatForest

Nethermost Majesty. Let me know what you think.

        • more beer

Cool I am going to check your band out.

        • more beer

          Are you guys on bandcamp?

          • GoatForest
          • more beer

I found it and bookmarked it. I am getting ready to go meet a lady friend for lunch and drinks. I will listen to either when I get home or tomorrow morning. When it isn’t just something playing in the background while I am trying to do 10 different things at once.

          • ME GORAK™✓ᶜᵃᵛᵉᵐᵃⁿ

            QUALITY STUFF MR GOAT!!!!!!!

          • GoatForest

            Thanks man!

          • That’s some good black metal!

          • GoatForest

I appreciate your kind words, sir.

          • GoatForest

I also appreciate yours and Richter’s support on bandcamp.

        • Eliza

I found it. I like the opening riff to ‘Hosanna!’.

          • GoatForest

            Thanks. I appreciate that.

  • RJA

WHERE IT GOES JUN, JUN-JUN- JUN-JUN, JUN-JUN-JUN-JUN WHILE IT ALSO GOES WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHWAAAAAAAHWAAAAAH

That’s the best kind of black metal!

  • Eliza

That Horrendous riff is just right.

  • GrungierNine0

Saw Iron Maiden and Ghost live last night. I know this is heresy, but Ghost kinda stole the show. Dickinson’s audio guy should be shot.

    • The Arm(KJM)

When I saw Iron Maiden/Alice Cooper back in 2012 it was the same thing. Alice sounded perfect and Maiden took a few songs to get the mix right.

    • Eliza

I don’t hate Ghost. And when I saw Iron Maiden last year, Bruce’s voice sounded fine.

      • Scrimm

        Last week he was great

    • The Arm(KJM)

Also, I’ll be seeing this tour on the 19th.

      • GrungierNine0

Worth it, even with the tech problems. I saw the show at the Usana Amphitheater in Salt Lake, and you best believe 20,000 screaming fans overrides tech problems with sheer exuberance.

    • Janitor Jim Duggan

      Yay!

    • Óðinn

Poser alert! Admitting to liking Ghost. Isn’t that a paddlin’ or something?

…Just kidding. I like Ghost. Odd about Maiden. They usually put on a good show.

  • DarkSatanulatingGraniteMilfs it is.

  • Count_Breznak

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TerNqsO_rDQ ..only available with some odd video

  • Óðinn

Lots of good riffs. I’m gonna go with Yarnhawk. That chunky Seer riff is good.

  • Megadead™
    • Howard Dean

      BYAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

  • Jay Majesty

Luckily I held off Eliza by 1 point. haha
