Brought to you by  Craniums™ – “‘The Brain’s Choice’: 540 million years and counting”.

Last week was our half-yearly giveaway round, featuring your favourite riffs of 2017 so far, and although we only had a few submissions, the battle was intense. Toilet ov Hell favourites Winds Of Leng had a strong lead until some favourable social media shares from the Paganizer camp brought home the victory by the slimmest of margins. Newcomer Hogan taking the competition by the neck and/or genitals and winning the half-yearly mystery prize on first attempt by just a single vote!

This week we’re getting skeletal. We asked for riffs from albums featuring a skull on the cover, and as we only got sent 8 of the 843061 metal albums that meet this particular criterion, we’ll probably do this one again sometime in the future. Don’t forget to use the PROMO CODE SLOP after voting to receive your complimentary organic cleansing session for the email inbox of your choice*.

Eliza

Megadeth – “Rattlehead” (Riff @ 0:38)

The riff starts at 0:38 and is part of a track that is one of the highlights of an album full of awesome riffs, which also has a very silly and obviously fake plastic skull on the cover.

The Skull – “The Skull” (Riff @ 5:34)

You want skulls, Toilet Ov Hell? You need skulls? Well, your good ol’ pal Mr Milfs is here with your skull fix. This one is called “The Skull”, by a band called The Skull, from the EP The Skull. A sweet Trouble cover (featuring former Trouble singer Eric Wagner), with all the clean guitars, baritone vocals and snail paced power chords that you have come to love from the genre, picking up the pace a little past halfway through the song, and finally, the brilliant doom riff that comes @5:34 to close it all.

Hans

Evil Army – “My Rage Unleashed” (Riff @ 0:52)

Been looking for an excuse to send this one in, so I’m glad that this EP has about five and a half skulls on the cover. This band plays awesome thrash. The riff at 0:52 is catchy as hell. That is all.

Richter

Black Cilice – “Boiling Corpses” (Riff @ 28:53)

I WILL NOT FORGET TO SUBMIT A SKULL RIFF
I WILL NOT FORGET TO SUBMIT A SKULL RIFF
I WILL NOT FORGET TO SUBMIT A SKULL RIFF
I WILL NOT FORGET TO SUBMIT A SKULL RIFF
I WILL NOT FORGET TO SUBMIT A SKULL RIFF
I WILL NOT FORGET TO TIMESTAMP THE SKULL RIFF @ 28:53 WHERE IT GOES JUN, JUN-JUN-JUN-JUN, JUN-JUN-JUN-JUN WHILE IT ALSO GOES WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHWAAAAAAAHWAAAAA.

Jay Majesty

Horrendous – “Monarch” (Riff @ 1:21)

This is absolute killer riff from a great band.  Every time I hear this song I want to stage dive off my desk while playing air guitar.  Yes its the classic HM-2 sound but Horrendous is able to make this riff sound unique.

xtuffxghostx

Agoraphobic Nosebleed – “Dead Battery” (Riff @ 0:27)

Scott Hull is a riff machine and that’s all there is to say.

Ted Nu-Djent

Ministry – “Burning Inside” (Riff @ 0:38)

38 seconds in the main riff of the song starts. This album is 28 years old this year gosh darnit and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t still sound as fresh as a daisy. Latter day Ministry may be a bit patchy but back from The Land of Rape & Honey through to Psalm 69 Uncle Al was on top of his game. Hard to believe that these guys started as a synth pop band.

Yarnhawk

Seer – “Acid Witch” (Riff @ 3:15)

This riff is a good and not a bad.  That is all.

Lacertilian

Balmog – “Der Flvche” (Riff @ 2:50)

Legend has it that if on the third night of an Autumnal waxing crescent moon you listen to this hypnotic riff loop, while absentmindedly staring at the album cover, you’ll get a very mystical headache.
