Given the federal holiday, we’re taking it easy today and only doing this single post. In honor of the greatest orator of the 20th century and more-radical-than-they-taught-you-in-school civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., we’re going to have an open swim wherein you are encouraged to talk about your favorite bands with members who are Black, Latino, Asian, or in any way help to disprove that heavy music is strictly “white people music.” Whaddya got, Toileteers?

I’m at work today like normal. I have Friday off though!

    • FeelTheDarkness

      FUCKING RIGHT!!!!!!!

      • Edward/Breegrodamus

        Fuckin’ A.

    • Renan Ribeiro

All my activities in Internal Medicine today got cancelled because people that run my university are somehow slacking harder than I am.

So I’m going to be listening to metal until I have the 5 – 11 PM class that’s supposed to get me into a good residency.

And I’m still jealous about your Fridays. “Long” weekends are the best!

      • Edward/Breegrodamus

That sounds like a pretty kick ass day for you. For me, I work my second job this weekend so I have Friday off but then work Saturday through Friday until next weekend. Taking a day off though means I am only working seven days in a row and not twelve!

I’m gonna check out some music after work, and hopefully tackle a short article for the site.

        • Renan Ribeiro

You are the hardest working person I know. If you have time check the BM bands I posted in the FB group. You might like it.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

Black metal bands in the Facebook group?

  • zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    vietnam war lobby=rockefellers/u.n”clintons”.=shot jfk=shot martin luther king=did 911

    • Stockhausen

      JFK shot Martin Luther King??

      • Howard Dean

I thought this was pretty much common knowledge by now, no?

        • Stockhausen

I have so much to learn. It would stand to reason, then, that you shot Michael Jackson?

          • Howard Dean

No, it was Charlie Sheen. He loaded up that syringe with Propofol and blasted that motherfucker! He had help from Adolf Eichmann’s disembodied spirit. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz told me so.

          • Stockhausen

Dangit. Just when I thought I was getting it.

    • KJM

You’re 100% correct about the Vietnam thing. That’s why he was shot.

I will never stop repping these dudes. Awesome folk metal from China, complete with throat singing, urhus, and words I don’t understand. Also, in pretty much every Chinese metal band I’ve ever seen, at least 3/4ths of the members have dreadlocks. It’s a thing.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u15Lr-I9Leo

    • Edward/Breegrodamus

Luckily for us I don’t understand most of the words in English speaking extreme metal bands. See also: Ghost Bath (for Chinese extreme metal).

      • Guacamole Jim

Do they have dreadlocks? If not, I doubt their authenticity.

        • Edward/Breegrodamus

I don’t know I have never seen or looked for any flics of them.

          • Guacamole Jim

            Ooooooooh this is good!!

    • Stockhausen

      Am quite interested.

  • Dude, Gigan is relentless. Wow!

    • Dude, Xihalba goes just as hard. Dang!

    • Spear

They’re a goddamn force of nature live. Go see them if you get the opportunity.

      • Scrimm

They were good when I saw them but I witnessed a real dickish attitude from the guitar player that put me off them pretty bad.

      • Hubert, The DoomGoat

They kind of sucked live when I saw them, the sound was mess, especially the guitars. Luckily Wormed and Ulcerate came up after that, who were amazing.

        • jelly re: seeing Ulcerate live

        • Spear

Bad sound guy maybe? They were great when I saw them.

          • Hubert, Goat ov/of D00M

Could be. Wormed and Ulcerate sounded great though so that would be weird.

    • just discovering them? my personal fav is Quasi-Hallucinogenic Sonic Landscapes, i can listen to that album front to back anytime

      • I am on it! thanks

        GL

  • Guacamole Jim

Also, Canada doesn’t celebrate MLK day. But we really should. Dude was a fucking badass.

    • DDubya.

You should look into one of his mentors, Howard Thurman. Dude was legit and hung out with Gandhi.

      • Guacamole Jim

This dude seems like someone I would love to read.

        • DDubya.

I’ve got several of his books. I started reading them at a critically formative period in my life, and he’s partially responsible for my pacifist worldview.

          • Guacamole Jim

It’s interesting how we reach those periods where what we read or who we speak to changes us for the rest of our lives. I remember a few of those times specifically. In grade 6 I read Lord of the Flies, and (at the risk of sounding like a hippie) it changed my entire worldview. Reading Fear and Trembling was another one of those moments. It’s taken me a lot of time to admit to myself that I’m a pacifist though. Culture really has an impact on the way we think.

          • Gurptitude

I read LotF freshman year in high school. I’m curious, how did it change your thinking?

          • Guacamole Jim

It made me start thinking about human nature and our tendency towards violence, and I think it was especially formative because I was so young when I read it. Basically it opened my eyes to the “basically good/basically evil” debate, and put me on the side of “basically evil.”

          • DDubya.

That’s interesting because that’s how most religious people would tend to think humanity falls.

          • Guacamole Jim

I, for many years of my life, was strongly Calvinist. I’ve since grown up and mostly abandoned the harsh black & white of total depravity. Still religious, though.

          • DDubya.

Interesting. It’s amazing how many things you and I actually have in common.

          • Guacamole Jim

            <3

          • DDubya.

Although I’d say I’ve actually landed more in the reformed camp after growing up extremely charismatic.

          • i’m sure you’re still charismatic!!

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

Jimmy! I just got back from the gym and my arms feel like pudding!

          • get your swole on JJDSW!

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

I sure did get my swole on!

          • KJM

            Don’t forget to stretch.

          • DDubya.

            Haha, thanks, Jimmy! <3

          • Guacamole Jim

That’s interesting, actually — again, we’ve a startling amount of similarities. I grew up charismatic, but have been in the Episcopal (Anglican here) church for several years now. I’m finding myself existing between the extremities of the dogmas in the two traditions.

          • DDubya.

Very interesting! In another life, my man, we may have been best friends.

          • Does this life not count then??

The good maple syrup? You know how to make a gal feel special.

          • Guacamole Jim
          • Howard Dean

This is going to sound kinda silly, but a significant portion of my job involves working with maple syrup producers. It’s a huge industry–particularly in Quebec, but also in Northern New England and New York.

          • Since we have moved, I would like to try to make my own maple syrup. We have about 20 trees that are big enough to tap. Not sure if I am going to make the time try it this year though….

This is an interesting fact HD!

            GL

          • Howard Dean

It’s labor intensive and time consuming, for sure. But for many people, it’s extremely gratifying–even if they’re only boiling enough to make a couple of quarts or a gallon.

          • DDubya.

I love maple syrup. Heat some up with a little melted butter and spread over your pancake-item of choice. Delicious.

          • Howard Dean

I’m particularly fond of maple milk. Super simple. A glass of milk and a splash of maple syrup (preferably Grade A Dark Amber, though the lighter, fancier stuff is good, too) stirred in.

          • DDubya.

I’ve never tried it, but I will now.

          • Guacamole Jim

SO GOOD. Also, since you’re in the industry, ever had maple taffy?

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

I want maple taffy! I also want some maple syrup, preferably Mrs. Butterworth because my sister is terrified of her.

          • Howard Dean

JJD go on with that Mrs. Butterworth nonsense! Janitor Jim be trollin’.

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

I love to scare her by using Mrs. Butterworth. On April Fools Day I’m going to put a empty bottle right in front of her face while she’s asleep. I want to see her reaction.

          • Howard Dean

Hell yes. Sugar on snow! Delicious. One of my favorite uses/preps for sap.

          • KJM

It would have to be Vancouver for me.

          • Guacamole Jim

Would rather live in Vancouver than Edmonton/10

          • KJM

I wouldn’t want to live anywhere that has a colder Winter than Boston.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

Calvin was kind of a scary mofo.

          • Guacamole Jim

He was intense. Way too intense. Ridiculously intelligent though — you’d have to be for your views to influence the scope of western thought for hundreds of years.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

He did a speech / sermon about how we are all dangling from a thin spider web over the fiery pits of Hell. I’m sure you are already well aware, but, dude thought that everyone was already predetermined to go to Heaven or Hell. Interesting stuff really, just, scary. Lol

          • Guacamole Jim

Actually, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” wasn’t Calvin at all. Calvin was in the 1500’s — the dude who did that sermon was an American named Jonathan Edwards (1700’s). It’s been argued that the followers of Calvin took his views to a much more radical extreme, and I would probably agree with that, though I can’t deny the implications of predestination in Calvin’s theology. Also, he was a political leader during the reformation, and had a nasty habit of drowning Catholics.

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

            No kidding, that wasn’t Calvin?

Also drowning people for being a different religion is pretty hxc.

          • Nordling Rites ov Kahlua

Funny, I and many of my friends read a lot about humanity’s violence and all that kind of books and so. And everyone of them is now a pacifist. Everyone seems to turn into it (if their formative years include literature etc like this.)

          • Guacamole Jim

I suppose that could make sense. If you believe that humanity tends towards violence but don’t see it as a good thing, then eventually any violence, even retaliatory violence, becomes abhorrent. Hence pacifism. But pacifism to me, and I think to many others, doesn’t mean accepting the status quo or never fighting against injustice — it just means fighting in a way that has no room for physical violence.

          • Nordling Rites ov Kahlua

Yeah I see the logic. It’s just funny that I never became a pacifist. It’s honestly too positive for me. Too positive in having faith in humanity

    • Howard Dean

Is it true that instead of observing Doctor/Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Esq. D.D.S. day in Canada, you instead worship at a cardboard cutout altar of Wayne Gretzky? Is it also true that these cardboard cutouts are located in the restroom of every Tim Horton’s north of Presque Isle, Maine?

Please tell me this is true. If not, I don’t even know what to believe anymore.

      • Guacamole Jim

No, you’ve got it right. It always falls the day after we venture out for the annual moose tickling extravaganza.

        • Howard Dean

Fuck yes. This dude at work tried to tell me it was fake. I was like, “Bro, c’mon. Get real.” Next thing you know he’s going to tell me that pro wrestling is fake. You try taking a steel chair to the head, brother!

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

Wrestling is scripted. The people are actually fighting most of the time though.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

            Of course you would.

There are actually only four federally-recognized National Holidays in Canada:

            – Canada Day (July 1)
            – Thank God We’re Not America Week (July 2-7)
            – Raffi’s Birthday (July 8)

And, of course, Moose Tickling Day.

We celebrate “Thank (proverbial) God(s) We’re Not Canada” Day 365 times a year. We drink tallboys of liberty and freedom. ‘merica.

          • They’ve residence in Netherlands. It’s in general, anti-gov, anti-religion, anti-imperialism.

          • Hubert, The DoomGoat

Melechesh also reside here in the Netherlands because it’s too dangerous in their own country I believe.

          • Yes, but they got a worse situation. At least you’re fine here if you don’t point at someone. Like the Metastasis guys I posted a while ago. They are in jail since last year because that song.

          • Akercocke ov Steele

And even there, they would seem to still be somewhat at risk.

          • Now.. These guys are in jail now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1agnDAqxNY

          • Guacamole Jim

            Damn, I can see why.

          • they were involved in the protest in last year. 41 people died in different cities, because radical opositions on the youth making some urban guerrilla tactics and because the goverment made brutal force with the police. That was the sad part: the protests (that were for fair complains) passed to the background when the euphoria and the frenzy of the radical sectors of the country took control (both, goverment and oposition). The first death was perpetrated by a secret service policeman and the last deaths were made by the radical oposition. It was a very conflictive time that’s still bouncing in some heads, even when the country right now is kind of peaceful (in the political side)

          • Guacamole Jim

Wow. It’s hard to imagine that sort of stuff happening, because I’ve been fortunate enough to live in a peaceful country. I would argue that we’ve been too peaceful about some of the stuff our government has done, but it’s nothing like what you guys have gone through.

          • I think this year will happen something. I hope it’ll not be like in 1990/89. But, this is going to be serious with the downs in the petroleum prices. Venezuela is very oil-dependant, and this goverment have A LOT of populist programs that would have some cuts if the economy stays that bad.

We are feeling it now. This is a old video, but those long lines are again happening: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fnwcm82NRkY

          • Guacamole Jim

What is happening in that video? A protest?

          • they’re entering to a hypermarket to buy regulated-prices food…

          • I was just reading an article about the low oil/gas prices affecting the economies of certain countries, specifically Venezuela and Iran. Hope things don’t get too bad over there. Like Jim was saying, I find it really hard to imagine anything like what happens in your country to happen here.

          • DDubya.

I’m not sure how true this is, but my understanding is that the low prices are caused by OPEC playing hard ball and trying to break the shale oil companies here in the US.

          • It’s a wicked game that the elite from the arabs and the US are playing. We’re in the middle because the fracking and the lack of coperation of the middle east

          • My understanding is the OPEC has little sway at the moment. I understood that the global supply was up, usage/demand is down, therefore the prices are dramatically lower.

Also, many of middle eastern companies(governments?) can slash production and ride out the low prices because their reserves are gigantic.

            GL

          • Global supply is up and OPEC isn’t artificially constricting supply because it’s hurting Iran and Russia, both of whom are supporting Assad’s regime in Syria. http://www.npr.org/blogs/parallels/2014/10/28/359601443/why-does-saudi-arabia-seem-so-comfortable-with-falling-oil-prices

          • Personally, I just love that fact that I can fill up my truck for $1.84/gallon. $17 for a fill up is great!

            GL

          • you should come to my country. The cheapest gas ever. Even the water is more expensive than gas.

I can be thirsty and don’t have enough money for water, but I still buy liters of gasoline. *headshot*

          • I have often heard city water in those countries is not safe enough to drink. Is that true in your area?

            GL

          • DDubya.

When I was in Honduras years ago, we had to buy those big jugs of water.

          • Those countries have the worst potable water with Africa x.x

          • It depends on the season. But it’s generally potable in this city. When it’s the dry season you can’t because the water storage got empty quick and the last water can give you a severe diarrea jajaja

          • Dang. I find the thought of not having ample quantities of potable water crazy, Link.

            GL

          • In 2014 we got a severe drought and we got water just for 1 or 2 days at week. Later was 1 or 2 days of water at 15 days.

          • So what the hell do you drink in those situations? Are you buying that water? Or do you have to buy additional water on top of the supply for 1 to 2 days?

            GL

          • That time I lived in a rent room. The owner had to buy trucks to fill the water deposit of the house every week x.x She spend a lot of money in that

          • Jesus. I find that purely unimaginable, man. I feel terrible for places that experience those things. We have tremendous water at our house. We can drink it straight from the well. It is truly a blessing.

            GL

          • I’m glad that you have clean water. That’s a right! 😀

          • I drinked bottled water for all of those months!

          • Prices are down to about $1.74 here, the KC newspaper recently said that we’re one of the lowest prices in the nation right now. I can nearly fill up my entire tank for less than $20 and that hasn’t happened since I’ve been driving!

          • DDubya.

            I saw 1.67 here yesterday.

          • Man, that’s nuts!

          • Here the gov don’t want to rectify the prices of the gas. They fear another Caracazo..

          • This was the Caracazo, a social riot in the 1989. The goverment tried to install some neoliberal economics that privtized transport and basic services like electricity. The prices went high and the poor people went down to the commercial centre of Caracas and started huge riots with pillages. The police and the military started fire agaisnt anyone in the state of emergency proclamed by the president Carlos Andrés Pérez and the conclusion was an undetermined amount of dead and dissapered.

          • Man, that’s terrifying. The second a government or military starts killing it’s own civilians on purpose, things get shitty fast. Unfortunately, it seems like we’re slowly descending into that in this country…

          • We must be like Costa Rica. That country spend a lot of time with shitty military dictatorship and when they gain democratic goverments they decided to cut off the military and spent that money in education!

          • I hate to say this: but you better get yourself some firearms and ammo!

Don’t confuse this with fear mongering.

            GL

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

That is a disturbing photo. These kids must be compensating for something.

          • The Mexican government loves to blame its gun problems on the US pretending that all of the weapons used by criminals are coming from north of the border. I think the “good stuff” (ie: the stuff that gives them parity with police forces) comes from their corrupt military. You can’t just get the sort of military-grade firepower that cartels wield from a fucking Gander Mountain in the States.

Likewise this picture illustrates two Central American kids with weapons made by companies in Brazil. That’s a fact by looking at them.

            I agree.

All of that is insane, man. I think we here in the states don’t truly realize how good we have it despite most of our politicians being fucking scumbags and our host of other issues. But then we read stories from countries like yours and hopefully it puts things in perspective.

          • Remember, we vote for our politicians. So don’t rag on them too hard!

          • I have no idea how congress averaged a 15% approval rate last year yet 95% of them got reelected. People need to inform their damn decisions when they vote. Now my state is condemned with the shittiest governor for another 4 years, and he’s running the state into the damn ground. RAAAAAGE.

          • Akercocke ov Steele

I think it was a matter of many people nonvoting and those who voted still thought those politicians were doing a good job. I can tell you one thing, it looks like the environmental rules are getting deregulated again.

          • KJM

People weren’t given a real alternative.

          • KJM

More people need to get off their ass and vote. If just 2-3% more of the eligible population voted, a lot would change.

          • more beer

But those people also need to not vote for the same sorry bastards who are fucking everything up. If they are in power and doing shit job get rid of them!

          • more beer

It`s because most people here won`t vote outside of their political party. They all listen to the 30 second sound bites on the news and make their decision because of those. They are all afraid to vote for more free thinking independents. If the people in power are not doing a good job it`s like they don`t even care. If things are bad incumbent should mean unemployment not re-elected!

          • Joseph De Mairtre said one time: “Every country gets the goverment that they deserve”. I think that Venezuela got very bad problems since the very beginning..

          • Akercocke ov Steele

I keep on saying the same thing, people think we’re turning into some dictatorship? Let’s go down to an actual one and make em realize just how fortunate we still have it here.

          • more beer

Yes it is. all I can say is we need to keep fracking. Opec has their panties in a bunch because we are producing more than they want us too. They have been screwing us for decades time to repay them for it. They have never cared about our economy when they were the biggest producers. Why should we care about there’s. The technology to get oil out of shale has come a long way and will continue to get better. I love seeing all of the oil being drilled when i`m northeast of Denver. All I can think is good for those farmers and fuck the Middle East.

          • Lacertilian

Here in Australia almost all farmers are united against any further fracking. Opting for wind farms, clean rivers & air instead.

We haven`t gotten to that point in America. But where I live we have some of the strictest Fracking regulations in the country.

          • Lacertilian

I’m sure our regulations are of a similar ilk to yours.
Farmers have a ‘shut the gate’ protest running here.

          • DDubya.

I live in an energy corridor, and we have both fracking and wind farms in the area.

          • Lacertilian

            Farmer Dubya?

          • DDubya.

Haha, not at all. I just live in a pretty weird part of Texas. This area is also the largest producer of cotton in the US.

          • more beer

I`m sure they are. The only thing where I am it`s the farmers who are drilling and fracking. You see the fracking stuff and drills on their land right next to the winter wheat. They are not protesting they are getting paid.

          • DDubya.

Interesting. That article indicates both what I said and what @george_lynch:disqus said.

          • imbeingobtuse

Info taken from several different (some mainstream) news sources: OPEC has decided to keep their “accelerated” output of product for 6 months in response to rapid growth of both shale and bitumen production by the US and Canada. Also to help kill the proposed pipeline construction.

Take this as one person’s opinion based on info gathered and first-hand experience (i work in the Athabasca Flats in northern alberta). Obviously there are other factors either not reported or considered “fringe”.

          • they’re trying to break it because US found some new petroleum reserves and Russia too and China too. I don’t undertsand too much of oil market, that was something that a teacher told me this weekend

          • DDubya.

I live in an area where the shale oil boom is huge. A lot of people in this region are getting laid off.

          • The year started that bad, that I read and told about food and products being importated from a lot of different places. I saw a toothpaste certified in Kenya (wtf)

I don’t go to supermarkets because I don’t have enough time to pass the entire morning in a row to try to buy some stuff.. My dad helps me with that because he buy stuff in the black market.

      • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Hazy, drunken, and awesome! Watain played too long and they were just boring. Revenge slayed and Mayhem killed. Killer set list.

        • Tyree

        • Stockhausen

          Sounds about right for Watain.

The only one I dug was Casus Luciferi.

          • Howard Dean

Casus Luciferi is a pretty good album. They started trending towards derpiness soon thereafter. I still liked some tracks off of Sworn to the Black and Lawless Darkness.

          • Gurptitude

It’s such a subtle change, but it’s there.

          • Stockhausen

Yeah man. If the music is good I’ll look past an over-the-top NO FUN ALLOWED attitude, but you at least need to not put me to sleep. And, they make me even more made because you can’t creatively put “snore,” “bore,” or “sleep” into their name to make fun of them.

          • DDubya.

Portal are extremely pretentious (I think I have PTSD from that interview), but I enjoy their music.

          • Stockhausen

Gah, that interview made me want to eat glass and blow my nose with sandpaper. But like you said, their music is enjoyable. Dodecahedron is another band in the No Fun Club (although they’ve never seemed pretentious, just super srs), but they rule.

        • Howard Dean

I’ve heard their show can be decent, but that it’s also a little pretentious and boring, seeing as they consider it a “ritual” and need to do all types of religious nonsense. I say just play some fucking metal.

          • DDubya.

I’ve avoided listening to them because of that pretentious silliness.

            There is only one reply.

        • My friend said Mayhem were awful except Hellhammer’s drumming. Didn’t care for the other bands either. He also got yelled at for wearing a sweater to the show. Was that you?

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

            Hahaha. It wasn’t me.

          • Haha good to know. Quote: “Some fat neck beard walked up to me and yelled at me for wearing a sweater to a black metal show and called me a poser.”

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

Hahahaha. I do have a beard right now (because it’s winter in cunting Michigan). And I was drunk. But alas, that wasn’t me. Still fucking funny, though.

          • Nothing wrong with a beard, he has one now too, but a fat neck beard is a totally different entity.

Speaking of fat neck beards, I met one who told me that black people are less evolved and shouldn’t be in black metal this weekend. Good times.

          • King Shit of Fuck Mountain

            Wow. Fucking humans.

          • I talked to him a bit and he told me about how he was big into NSBM. Okay, yellow flag, but not necesarily a huge thing.

Then after about an hour, I’m sitting there, and he walks up to me while I’m trying to watch a band and just starts talkin in my ear about how he hates all these posers like Deafheaven and Young and In The Way (they’re local to us) and he would beat the shit out of them because they don’t get true black metal, and how women and black people shouldn’t play in black metal, “BUT I HAVE BLACK FRIENDS!”.

I told him straight to his face with every ignorant comment that he was ignorant and wrong, but he had clearly taken a liking to me so he tried to just play the “open minded” card

          • Tyree

Don’t you just fucking love when strangers are spitting into your ear? Leave me alone humans, I’m trying to enjoy a beer while watching a concert.

          • It was so obnoxious, i mean sure it was a dad rock band just standing on stage, but I had a couple friends playing and it was really fun to watch them jamming some classic rock covers up there and having a blast.

But no, fat racist neck beard decides to saunter on over and flop half his man titty weight on the table so that he can lean in and whisper about how black people play to their stereotypes and that white people are the most evolved of all people

      • I hate the term “metal” and rarely use it anymore. It’s no longer enough that “heavy metal” as a descriptor has been shortened to “metal,” but now it’s even capitalized like some sacred shit. The capitalization had to logically happen though the way everyone is popping off on the internet with their “this is ‘Metal’ and this is ‘hard rock'” pontifications.

It’s actually worse than the early-nineties when everyone was trying to “be” “punk” and “alternative.”

        • Akercocke ov Steele

“Omg this is like, metal stuff”

        • I know exactly what you mean, but separating the terms “metal” and “heavy metal” is useful. If i’m talking about some generic band that tries to be Machine Head (lol), I can just say they’re a metal band, and their sound won’t surprise you too much. but if I’m talking about some band that’s trying to be Maiden or Budgie or something, I can say heavy metal and you know exactly what I mean. While you CAN switch out heavy metal for metal, you cannot switch out metal for heavy metal and make sense, IMO.

If I called Killswitch Engage a heavy metal band, that seems weird, but calling them a metal band seems right. Likewise, if I call A Sound of Thunder a heavy metal band, it makes sense!

          • I’m old and confused.

            Don’t mind me 🙂

          • It’s okay, I used to think Job for a Cowboy was grindcore

          • Edward/Breegrodamus

I recently saw someone describing Pig Destroyer as something other than grindcore. I heartily lol’d.

          • Howard Dean

PD are pretty death metally, but they are definitely grindcore.

          • Akercocke ov Steele

Anything with a distorted guitar these days is termed as “metal” I also hate the word “screamo”

    • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

What is your opinion on Black Star Riders? They’re basically the 2012 lineup of Thin Lizzy under a different name. They have a new album coming out as well.

      • OldMetalHead

I have to be truthful man. I haven’t really checked them out. I’ll let you know.

        • Nordling Rites ov Kahlua

They have at least one album out already. Pretty ok, vocalist tries to soynd like Phil. A little lame TL honestly.

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

They have a new album coming out. I’m not really that excited for it. I’m more excited for the new Toto album.

Wish they would do a reunion tour…i would willingly drive a few hours to see that.

        • Edward/Breegrodamus

I caught RATM live in New York City in 2007. They were awesome live.

  • BLVKKBEVRD

Growing up in a black neighborhood, in a black school, I can tell you that metal will still be a predominantly white genre. Case in point: not one ethnic person at the YAITW show Saturday. Also, has no one Animals as Leaders’d this topic yet?

    • Gurptitude

      i did 😀

    • Howard Dean

There are outliers and exceptions, of course, just like in any culture/scene/movement, but I agree. Metal is and will likely continue to be a predominately white phenomenon. I don’t think the genre (for the most part) is hostile towards or not receptive to black musicians and fans, I just think its popularity among black people is limited, and that’s probably going to be a continuing trend.

      • BLVKKBEVRD

Well, there are some fairly decent exemplars of intolerance in metal, even from good bands. White people are more accepted in hip hop than black people are in metal. There has to be a reason.

        • Howard Dean

There are definitely tons of shitbags in metal, particularly in the more underground/fringe scenes like NSBM/pagan metal. I was talking about metal in general, though. I think most metal bands and metal fans are pretty tolerant and open.

Also: Are white people really more accepted in hip hop than black people in metal? I don’t think I know enough about rap/hip hop.

          • BLVKKBEVRD

            Most assuredly

          • Howard Dean

            Was not aware of that.

          • BLVKKBEVRD

Sad to say, Eminem can be credited with opening the floodgates. You can find a way larger population of good white rappers than good black metal musicians, and with black people more open to listening than the other way around.

          • KJM

As I posted above, it’s a very mixed crowd at your average Hip Hop show, been that way since the 90s at least.

          • DDubya.

I’m with Blackbeard on this one. I was at a Cannibal Corpse show, and some dude grabbed the mic from Arkaik and started saying metal is better than rap because “any runaway slave could write rap.” It was awful. That dude did get knocked unconscious twice later.

          • Gurptitude

            Holy Jesus, that’s awful.
The knocked unconscious part not so much.

          • DDubya.

            I couldn’t believe it.

          • BLVKKBEVRD

I don’t even understand what would provoke a statement like that at a CC show. Did fuckin body count open?

          • DDubya.

Dude, I have no idea what prompted it. He wasn’t even a white guy.

          • BLVKKBEVRD

            That makes it slightly funny

          • Howard Dean

I agree there are a lot of douchebag racists who are metal fans. But let me play a little Devil’s Advocate: can we make this one knucklehead representative of the metal scene at large (let’s narrow it down and say even the Cannibal Corpse/Arkaik scenes) because of his shitbag statement and gall to make it publicly? That he got the shit kicked out of him for saying that actually speaks to the opinion of metal fans at their concert more than his singular words.

          • DDubya.

He got the crap kicked out of him for trying to take the mic again later and for feeling up some dude’s girlfriend, but you are correct that one incident does not a pattern make. However, as a fan of both metal and hip hop, I’ve encountered a lot more prejudicial attitudes in metal than hip hop.

          • Howard Dean

See, I would view that situation differently. The crowd reacted strongly to his conduct, and they showed that they wouldn’t put up with his shit. To me, this speaks more to a general disapproval among the fan-base of that concert, and is more representative of their overall opinion than the one guy making a racist comment.

          • DDubya.

Yah, I see where you’re coming from. Again, my opinions are just based on my own empirical observations of both fandoms. However, I would argue that things are in fact getting better in the metal scene. The acceptance of homosexuality is one indicator.

          • i’m not trying to make light of this conversation, but honestly the only prejudice i’ve encountered in the metal scene is against scene kids / screamo people.

        • KJM

Yep, you’ll definitely see more of a mixed crowd at a Hip Hop show than a Metal show.

    • i got close, with a TRAM song

    • OldMetalHead

I agree with you completely on the fan side of things. Metal has certainly gotten more diverse lately though on the performer side. I mean (whether you like them or not) I went to a Mayhem fest in 2009 that featured both God Forbid and Kill Switch Engage. In 2011, Straight Line Stitch.

    • Rob M

See, the reason comments like this bother me is that it comes across as a very European/American focused comment. While i agree there arent a ton of black people in heavy metal…theres huge Latino and Asian fanbases throughout the world

      • BLVKKBEVRD

I wasn’t really speaking of Latinos and Asians, more focused on the black community, which is more relevant here. It seems that way because there’s no point in me talking about those communities I’m not a part of.

        • Rob M

Which is fine, as I said I agree there arent a lot of black people in metal.
My reply was aimed at the part of your comment that said metal is a predominately white genre. It only looks like that until you start to scratch at it a bit..its far more multicultural than a lot of people give it credit for

(which is not to say, there arent shitty people with shitty thoughts about non-whites in the genre)

          • BLVKKBEVRD

I would still contend that, even with American ignorance(of course) that metal is still a predominantly white genre. I would think this would be true in Europe, as well as most other countries we get most of our metal from. I fully appreciate the culturalizing (new word) of metal.

          • Rob M

…see, I disagree with that. I think thats the general perception of metal..even by a lot of people who listen to it…but metal at the very least has always had an incredibly large and passionate latino fanbase. One thats been actively involved both as an audience, and also as performers since the very beginning. When people say its predominately white, I think were doing a disservice to them.

          • BLVKKBEVRD

I’m still talking about ‘Murica, is what I think the problem is. I can’t claim any rights to talk about other countries. The other real issue is numbers, and socio-economic factors, which I wont go into. White people make up the largest portion of the population. If I lived in south america, I’d expect the latino % of the community involved in metal to be a larger figure. If you live in america or europe, there simply aren’t enough non-whites to participate.

      • Tyree
  • Stockhausen

Zao’s best material was most written by Russ, a black guitarist that was in the band for a long time. I don’t know what album is pictured in the video, but it’s wrong.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJBHpFEBBOE

    • DDubya.

They ended up with no original members, right?

      • Stockhausen

Correct. The drummer was the only original member from about 97 to 2005 or 2006, then he left. He also sucked, and his ego got really big the last few years he was around.

  • Renan Ribeiro

Xibalba is great, ese. I can’t believe it took me this long to find out about them, but I was jamming the shit out of “Hasta La Muerte” full album on youtube last night.

          • DDubya.

There will be consequences if it does. Consequences.

        • I’ve been following for a long while. I think they’re just getting more dap everywhere now that they’re pretty much a death metal band.

          • DDubya.

Man do they go hard! Hasta La Muerte was one of my favorite albums that year it dropped.

          • Renan Ribeiro

They play increasingly tighter in each release, bringing them closer to DM, but they still manage to give off that Hardcore I’mma beat you down kind of vibe.

The doomier parts really complements the album and keep things interesting.

        • Gurptitude

Hey, you did some good then!
Also you know them being hardcore and stuff is a bit of an obstacle for a metal audience.

          • DDubya.

I feel that the hardcore isn’t really as noticeable with them, though.

          • Gurptitude

Have you ever heard about Mukeka Di Rato?
This song is about “cane sugar vodka”, so to speak. Cachaça!
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jjx5ZhVu564

        • DDubya.

Some of my friends visited Brasil and brought back Cachaça. Sounds like it gets you torn up real fast.

          • Renan Ribeiro

Yes! You can mix it and craft many a cocktails with it, but my favorite way to drink it is actually shots – there is a huge fruit/herb infused cachaça market in Brazil, so the shots can actually taste pretty good.

My favorite is the cachaça made from jambu, a local (to me) ingredient that makes your mouth tremble and shake when you eat it. The cachaça has the same effect, coupled with a 35-40% alcoholic punch.

The bar from the pic is the one that invented it. It’s actually 2 blocks away from my apartment.

          • Renan Ribeiro

So technically bringing up a (defunct) Korean band from Korea isn’t in any way the same as if they were Koreans in a North American band. It’s not like they’re a minority there. But still:

Necramyth, with David Gold on drums. Yes, that David Gold.

    • you’re picking some good picks today, @tyreegearhart:disqus. i guess that makes it a regular day for you!

    • Dayum.
      BYAH!²

    • DDubya.

Dude, did you see the lady-fronted grind band I posted last night?

      • Tyree

Nah, I’ve been away from my computer all this weekend. I’ll check later, work is pretty nuts today too.

  • Joey Jo-Jo Junior Shabadoo
  • Akercocke ov Steele

There’s this local band that’s pretty much all Natives. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXumptg7jC8

Our University is on traditional First Nations People’s land, so we tend to start every conference with an acknowledgement of their history (and history shared with other FNPs of Canada).

This was especially significant last November given that UVIC’s first Heavy Metal Conference (Tribe & Rite) used it as an opportunity to get a speaker in to talk briefly about First Peoples/indigenous/native/’indian’ metal and hardcore bands.

I sadly missed it because of a delayed bus, but I did get to speak to her briefly. Mostly just about Gyibaaw, though.

My old community college is on the reservation so there was a good amount of native students as well as classes on the native history.

      • PhoenixKing Leonhart

I really wish these guys would reunite. The split they did with Mitochondrion was the last stuff they put out and it was really good.

The reason they broke up in the first place was pure unfounded lolbuttz.

  • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

You know what I want? Taco Bell.

    • Taco John’s is approximately a million times better.

    • BLVKKBEVRD

      DEATH TO FALSE TACOS

      • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

        Never!

      • i live a few blocks from a giant Mexican district that boasts about 10 authentic mexican taco stands… but i’ll still bang the Taco Bell every now and then. (just don’t tell JJD)

  • OldMetalHead

I would be remiss if I didn’t add my favorite Filipino bay area thrashers.

    • OldMetalHead

Whoops Stanley beat me to it. Still, good song.

  • Stanley

Some more thrash for you. Not a huge fan of God Forbid (actually not really fan at all) but this track is not bad.

  • Scrimm

    • Lacertilian

The love it or leave it crowd are here too.
      Rednecks know no borders.

      • Zing Once A Day…

It would be funnier if English was spelt wrong.

        • Lacertilian

I’m surprised the nationalistic-types don’t say ‘Speak Australian’.
Although, they are always the first ones to complain when others mention removing the union jack stain from our flag.

Kinda makes you realise that their fear of change drastically outweighs their sense of national pride & knowledge of history.
If this happened, they’d have to change their tattoos.

      • Scrimm

        That’s awesome.

      • Agh, and Tony Abbott’s in charge of everything there. Racist asshole who basically sees women as nothing more than broodmares and livestock.

  • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff
    • Been meaning to see that documentary about them. Any good?

      • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

Yes its really good..very cool story. One of the brothers told them they would be heard eventually and it happened after his death in a very random way BUT he was right! Kick ass story..

  • Æ (Justin Nowlin)

Today I listened to the latest Asking Alexandria release and really enjoyed it. Please punish me because I’m disappointed in myself

    • *upvotes for humor

    • KJM

I suffered through AA at Mayhem Fest 2012 while waiting for Slayer and Motorhead to play. I no longer fear Hell.

      • Æ (Justin Nowlin)

I could relate to the album from a lyrical standpoint. That is why I liked it, but they’re still not a band I like. Being able to relate to something makes you like things you normally wouldn’t I guess.

    • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

I suffered through them at a festival in my area which had All That Remains, Emmure and any number of shitty bands. The one good band was Sevendust.

  • Max
  • Elite Extremöphile

I actually owe quite a bit to MLK personally, and not in a white guilt kind of way. I had to write about a political movement of the twentieth century for an essay that would determine if I got into my first choice college. So I obviously wrote about the civil rights movement and how it’s affected us more than we realize, and how black influence on music in particular is just insane. TLDR I managed to fit animals as leaders, suffocation, and the tony danza tapdance extravaganza into a college essay and got in.

One of my favorite FNM songs. One chord. Two riffs.

You know who is perfect listening for today? Public Enemy. Public Enemy is awesome and even though their albums aren’t good anymore they can still put on a show. Here’s one of my favorite songs of theirs.

      Fear Of A Black Hat

    • The one they recently did about Trayvon Martin was actually quite good. Their first good one in who knows how long.

  • KJM

Yo dudes! Actual Metal news! Check out a track form the forthcoming Saturnalia Temple album! Right now!

    http://www.deaf-forever.de/saturnalia-temple

    • KJM

Kinda dronish and boring, hope the rest of it is better.

      • BLVKKBEVRD

Yeah, this leaves a little to be desired

        • KJM

I’m hoping this is a case of the “single” being the worst track on the album. I really am.

          • BLVKKBEVRD

I feel like my love of stoner/doom has fallen off in recent years

          • KJM

With me, stoner/doom/sludge are really the only genres keeping me in tune with the current Metal scene.

  • KJM
    • FeelTheDarkness

That is advice to live by!

  • Poseur Diposeur

Hey dudes. Can someone recommend to me some sweet instrumental jams that are not post-rock (or metal or post-anything). Any other genre would be cool. Just trying to expand my day musically while I work.

  • BLVKKBEVRD

BLVKKBEVRD’S TIPS TO BEING MANLY #1:
Never let a woman cut your hair.

I broke my own first rule in grievous error today out of sheer need, and being unfamiliar with my new living area. Do not make the same mistake. I will continue providing these helpful tips to you in the future.

    • Lacertilian

The missus almost always ends up finishing off my hair and she can’t fuck it up because I’m using the clippers to cut to #0.
It’s much easier for her to see if I have missed any bits due to intoxication.

  • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

FUCK THIS SHIT. BOYCOTT THIS BULLSHIT.

    • BLVKKBEVRD

      Okay. I now boycott this.

    • The Bestest Tapir

      I thought you like them.

      • KJM

The point is Marc Bolan has been dead for nearly 40 years and T. Rex was his band. This is a laughable scam that will go nowhere.

        • The Bestest Tapir

          Oh. That explains everything,

          • KJM

Even the competing versions of “Sweet” that exist now are more legit than this monkey crap.

      • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

I like the original T. Rex, not this false version of one of the greatest glam rock bands ever.

This one isn’t metal, but excellent song partly about the Lincoln Park riots in Chicago during the 60’s. And yes, that’s Mayor Daley Sr. being sampled, talking how about how the protestors deserved to be beaten by the police.

An incredibly sad day too though………I found out my grandma’s in the hospital, and it looks like the end of the road for her. 🙁

    • KJM

Sorry to hear, the road ends for all of us someday…

      • Yeah, sadly. She’s 81, so at least she’s had a good, long life. Hoping for the best, but prepared for the worst.

  • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

I’m reading American Psycho and the book is so awesome. I love the mentions to 80’s artists I like and the talking about the 80’s products he has. He just mentioned a pocket watch with a TV and an AM/FM radio in it. I love the 80’s and this book makes the lifestyle seem awesome even though Bateman is a psychopathic murderer.

    • BLVKKBEVRD

Brett Easton Ellis is the fucking man. I highly approve. Also check out The Informers, as well as Glamorama

      • Janitor Jim Dvggan Svre Wovld

I have all his books on my phone. I’m going to read Less Than Zero next followed by the ones you mentioned. I like Glamorana because it inspired Zoolander which is a great movie.

        • BLVKKBEVRD

David duchovney as the hand model>>>>>>>>>>>

That book is awesome. The movie is fine but it doesn’t do it justice.
