Look at that artwork.

FUCKING LOOK AT IT! 0/5 flushes! If you’re not at half mast right now, you need to see your primary care physician. Or a coroner. You might be dead. Or, at least your dick is.

New information for one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2014 has been released. France’s inimitable black metal and avant-garde monsters Blut Aus Nord will release their album Memoria Vetusta III: Saturnian Poetry on October 10th. The album will be available in CD (digipack) and Gatefold LP for us unabashed Luddites, and also as a digital download for you techno-centric warlocks. The album is being released by the always excellent Debemur Morti Productions, one of the best labels in extreme metal (their stable also includes Archgoat, Behexen, Dodsengel, Manes, and Monolithe).

From Debemur Morti: “The most influential Black Metal band of the last decade is finally back, two years after the last full length album, Cosmosophy, the monumental conclusion of the unforgettable 777 trilogy. This time, far from its filthy industrial realm, the enigmatic entity offers nothing less than one of the finest melodic, epic and grandiose Black Metal album ever!”

Memoria Vetusta III: Saturnian Poetry is the cap to BAN‘s Memoria Vetusta series, which began all the way back in 1996 with the incredible Memoria Vetusta I: Fathers of the Icy Age. Coming immediately on the heels of BAN’s amazing debut album, Ultima Thulee, part I continued with the debut’s sound and thematics: Norse/Pagan mythology, frostbitten atmosphere, and some of black metal’s most beautiful and memorable melodies. Part II in the series, Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue with the Stars, was released in 2009. In the intervening 13-years, Blut Aus Nord mastermind Vindsval explored music’s nightmarish underbelly, melding black metal with other elements such as industrial and noise. In stark contrast to the mechanical whirring and haunting starkness of albums like The Work Which Transforms God and Mort (released in 2003 and 2006, respectively), part II in the Memoria Vetusta series was BAN returning to their icy roots after a long layoff, offering a melodic masterpiece clad in a more traditional black metal structure and with more conventional songwriting. If you are unfamiliar with BAN or with the Memoria Vetusta series, check out this sample to see what’s in store:

The track listing for Saturnian Poetry, as taken from the Debemur Morti website, is as follows:

01. Prelude
02. Paien
03. Tellus Mater
04. Forhist
05. Henosis
06. Metaphor Of The Moon
07. Clarissima Mundi Lumina

The amazing cover artwork was painted by legendary artist Kristian “Necrolord” Wåhlin, and the layout for the album was conceived by Dehn Sora, who has worked with the likes of Neurosis and Ulver. You may be familiar with Necrolord’s work, as he has painted some of metal’s most memorable and famous covers, including classics for bands like Emperor, Bathory, Dark Funeral, and Dissection.

Debemur Morti already released a sample from the new album, and it sounds spectacular. MVIII sees BAN experimenting with clean vocals(!) for the first time in their illustrious discography, and I will be the first to tell you that they sound amazing! Check it out for yourself:

The preorder for the album hasn’t been set up yet at the Debemur Morti webstore (as of 8/28), but when it is, you will know!

Memoria Vetusta III – Saturnian Poetry is a magnificent pagan symphony of guitars, the quintessential expression of Majestic Black Metal!”

  • I say this before every new Blut Aus Nord release: I hope it sounds like Fathers of the Icy Age.
    EDIT: This sample sounds great.

    • Randall Thor

I hope it sounds like Ultima Thulee

  • Metaphysical Anus

But the last part of 777 trilogy had clean vocals

    • Howard Dean

*Trvth. I stand (semi-)corrected. They were relatively clean in parts of Cosmosophy.

      • Does the chanting in Memoria Vetusta I count?

        • Howard Dean

It could, I suppose. When I wrote that, I had in mind the type of clearly/cleanly sung vocals contained in the sample. BAN has never really done anything like that. Like straight-up cleans in a melodic setting.

      • Christian Molenaar

Relatively? They’re all over this ish.

  • Spear

That art gives me a rager.

    • Howard Dean

As it should. I haven’t been able to stand up from my desk at all yoday. I’m going to have to tuck it up in the waistband.

      • Ahh, the classic Northstar move.

      • Scrimm

I have another day off and I was going to waste it on Diablo 3, but now I’m just going to stare at this.

        • I’ve been playing Diablo 3 non-stop on PS4. I sit down to play and 3-4 hours just vanish and I realize it’s time to go to bed.

          • Scrimm

Me too. between that and Outlast I’ve been useless this week.

          • Xan

I’ve been going through Bioshock Infinite this week.

          • Have you checked out Audiosurf? Basically it’s kinda like F-Zero, but the obstacles are set to whatever music you decide to put on. Lol, I had a blast setting it to some Krisiun!

          • Scrimm

That sounds interesting. I’ll look into it

        • Howard Dean

I stared at it for like three hours this morning. People at work thought I was having a seizure or something.

          • Metaphysical Anus

My money is ready for the pre-order

          • Howard Dean

Mine too. I’ve practically hounded Debemur Morti about it. I just want to put it through now so that I can rest a little easy knowing that it’s taken care of and will arrive at my mailbox in October.

          • Scrimm

Nothing beats a cover you can get lost in. This is one of the best i have seen in a long time. I’d probably buy this even if I hated the band.
Edit: funny, this is comment number 666 for me.

          • Xan

            So kvlt.

    • Cock of Steele

I don’t know what to do with my nipples at the moment.

  • Scrimm

That artwork is amazing, knew right away it was necrolord.

  • Howard Dean

I say this having heard only the sample, but I’m building upon mounds of hype I have generated inside of myself for this album: This could be AOTY. Maybe the only album to topple Dead Congregation from the top spot. It will be a tough fight.

    • Metaphysical Anus

I don’t know if it will topple To Be Kind from my top spot.

    • Randall Thor

Earth Diver is sitting on my #1 so far

  • CyberneticOrganism

When I go to Norway, I’m going to find that landscape for real, even if I have to drink a hundred beers and never leave the bar to do it.

  • This is not getting laid at bandcamp. I am becoming impatient.

    • Metaphysical Anus

Blut Aus Nord is better than everything!

      • Hey I never said it was bad. This is good shit. But I am anxiously awaiting tyree’s finds.

    • Howard Dean

There’s a tech death/masturbatory metal post written by a certain counter-terrorism fellow if you need to bide your time. 🙂

    • Calm your tits. Later today.

  • Dental_Damnation

Not be confused with Blut Im Auge. Which I initially confused this with and thought wow, they’re really distancing themselves from that whole rippin folk metal thing

  • Tyree

Wow, I totally missed this post. Fuck yes dude! Blut Aus Nord don’t disappoint. I’ll listen to this later on man.

    • Edward Meehan

I feel like this went up later than it appears in the posts for today… ?

    • Howard Dean

Yeah, I sort of rushed this one in this morning. This news was just barely posted last night, so as soon as I got a chance this morning, I wrote this up, and Joe/MSD were kind enough to squeeze it into the queue.

  • this sounds better than 75% of the 777 trilogy. some of that really weirded me out. i don’t think it’s suitable for driving or working out… maybe during sleep?

  • W.

    BAN is serious brain candy.

  • Xan

Before I even read the article, I looked at this album cover without my glasses and because apparently my eyesight is that of a potato’s, it looked like a giant dong. Upon donning my glasses, I smiled as the beauty of the artwork consumed me.

  • Gurp

Oh man. Memoria Vetusta II is one of my favorite albums of all time. I know what to do with my stipend now…

  • My manhood feels engorged! This is the look on my face as I heard the news and saw the artwork:×338.jpg

  • blabla

it’s not the first time with clean vocals, he used that on different recs before.
riffs and vocals are killer as usual, but the drumming (especially the tom fills) gets boring as hell. weakest release so far.
