I Wouldn’t Recommend Taking Drugs And Watching The Video For “Sleeper Agent”

If you haven’t heard Pyrrhon’s Top 40 smash of the spring and summer, The Mother of Virtues, you’ve been asleep at the wheel. It has received much acclaim in the metal blogosphere, and for good reason. I won’t go on and on about how I consider it one of the best extreme albums of the year (’cause been there, done that). Everybody gets it Edward, you heart Pyrrhon. I was trolling Instagram early this evening when the too-handsome-for-metal #SMOLGHFAX tagged me in a comment asking if I had seen the music video for “Sleeper Agent.” I hadn’t. I’m not much of a music video guy, but it was Pyrrhon, so I rushed from Instagram to Facebook and Youtube to find out what I had been missing out on.

0:00 Pyrrhon “Sleeper Agent”, good, I am watching the right video. That’s helpful. It sounds like the right song.

0:02 That looks like two of the same guy. Is this a representation of the dichotomy of human consciousness?

0:20 There appears to be a man in a white shirt working in an office, or is it a lab?

1:02 It turns out the Michael Meyers masked instrumentalist is actually Satan. That’s a relief, because Michael Meyers is kinda scary.

1:17 That looks like a nice garage, spacious.

1:27 These office workers are moving a photocopier, or possibly a gurney. Why are they moving a photocopy machine?!

1:39 No Clean Singing did an excellent interview with lead singer Doug Moore where they discussed the inspiration for Pyrrhon’s lyrics among other things.

1:48 My family doesn’t have a history of epilepsy, do they? I should call my mom and find out.

2:27 I imagine it would be hard to play a giant drum held under your arm and keep time. This guy is good!

3:58 This guy is getting closer and closer to me, with his hideous red face. Was it really necessary to buy 18mg e-cig liquid before watching this? I was used to 10mg. Take a deep breath. Is that the song or my heart beating? It’s all making sense now. “Balkanized.” Resource wars and internet Illuminati exposers. Get it together, Edward. Turn down the volume. Turn on the lights for Christ’s sake. How long has this video been on? Don’t panic. Something is wrong. Something is up with the walls in here. Is someone at my front door? Could I hear them knocking over these headphones? Someone is at the front door, pounding as hard as they can. This is not how I thought things would end for me…

Ah. It’s over. An ad for Relapse Records… oh, look, Ariana Grande “Break Free” for iHeartRadio. That might be worth checking out.

  • As much racket as Pyrrhon makes, I’m thinking they’re going to destroy that Wisco dive in Madison.

JAG are you seeing that show in Wisconsin?

    • Leif Bearikson

I’m much more interested in that Carcass/Obituary tour that is making stops in living rooms of rural Kentucky

    • Janitor Jim Dvggan

Where’s The Satanist by Behemoth? Where’s Fallujah’s new album? Most importantly where’s the Godflesh EP?

      • Tyree

Forgot about that Godflesh EP. Added to the list now.

      • They’re on my “most over-rated albums of the year” list. Want me to tell them you’re looking for them?
        EDIT: Sans Godflesh.

        • W.

I’m stoked for the full-length from Godflesh.

          • Virgil the Ghost Poet

Me to. I’m debating whether or not to get the Japanese version. Primus, Melvins, and Inter Arma come next month also.

        • Howard Dean

Agreed. The Satanist never really resonated as strongly with me as I expected it to, and before I knew it I was assaulted by Impetuous Ritual, Artificial Brain, and a dozen other releases I found much more appealing. The Satanist kind of got swallowed up and lost in the mix of mediocrity.

        • Metaphysical Anus

I enjoyed The Satanist. It’s not as good as some people say, but I like it. I agree that it’s overrated. I never even bothered to listen to that Fallujah album,

        • Leif Bearikson

I will fight you over Behemoth.

      • you and i are in a very small Falujah boat. more like a dinghy.

        • Metaphysical Anus

I’ll swim under it and start drilling holes.

          • whatever it takes to find out what you’re like IRL…

          • Metaphysical Anus

Why are you so keen on finding out what I’m like?

          • if you were one of us, wouldn’t you be intrigued???

          • Metaphysical Anus

Have I asked stuff about the real you? Does that answer your question?

        • I’m there with you. I fucking love that album.

      • Virgil the Ghost Poet

I’m glad you liked the Godflesh ep, Jim.

    • Allysen is paying you, isn’t she?!

      • Tyree

Hahaha, Nah brah. I love how she is placed between Heresiarch and Ruin; two super heavy EP’s.

      • W.

        *You’re stalking Allysen, aren’t you?

        FTFY.

    • Howard Dean

      BOLZER

      • W.

Yo HD, I’m finally listening to Dead Congregation again. As well as the new AEvangelist.

        • Tyree

Needs to still listen to new AEvangelist.

          • W.

Do it! Oddly, it’s strangely accessible.

        • Howard Dean

Nice! I’ve only gotten around to listening to a track or two of new AEvangelist, so definitely go ahead and review it if you’d like.

I’ve honestly listened to Promulgation of the Fall probably 75 times this year. I really, really love it. It’s also caused me to throw on Graves of the Archangels and Purifying Consecrated Ground a dozen times each. I’m a fan(boy).

Relatedly, have you listened to DC’s Graves of the Archangels?

          • W.

I actually don’t think I have, but it is on Spotify.

          • Howard Dean

If you like Promulgation, definitely add it to your “must listen” list. I honestly don’t have a preference between the two, though Graves does give me a nostalgia boner since it was my first exposure to them. I think the two albums are equally excellent. Graves was and will probably be remembered as the more influential of the two, since DC came out of nowhere and vaulted immediately to the top of that strain of death metal with that release.

          • W.

Will do. Also, how exactly would you describe this strain of death? I wouldn’t put it in the Artificial Brain/Pyrrhon/Gorguts camp.

          • Howard Dean

No, not at all. Dead Congregation are not tech or “skronky” at all. This is going to sound silly or like a generalization, but it’s pretty much “pure” death metal. A lot of people would call it OSDM-revival, but I think that label is kind of derogatory. Some people call it “dark” death metal due to the tone, aesthetics, and old-school feel. I sort of get that. Dead Congregation are first cousins to their forbears Incantation and Immolation, as well as their peers Drawn and Quartered and Funebrarum, and are a more distant (second) cousin to a similar style of “oppressive” and “cavernous” style of death metal that takes many cues from Incantation (ex. Vasaeleth, Lantern, Teitanblood). The primary difference between Dead Congregation/Funebrarum and bands like Vasaeleth/Teitanblood is a lack of murkiness. DC is much clearer music and riff-wise than those two bands, who rely a lot on a very thick, chunky, atmospheric production to enhance their riffs.

          • W.

Thanks for that explanation. Yah, I was just thinking OSDM, but I think you make a good case for pure death metal.

          • Howard Dean

It’s definitely OSDM in its “feel,” as its mostly interested in forging killer riffs amidst a dirty sound, and doesn’t try for anything fancy or “modern.” I don’t like using the “OSDM-revival” term, because so many people use it negatively to describe underwhelming modern “old school” bands (similar to how people disparagingly call modern thrash “retro-thrash” or “pizza thrash”).

          • Agreed. I don’t feel like Dead Congregation is an uninspired rehash of OSDM. They’re doing something new and fresh with the genre, albeit subtly.

          • Dëpütÿ Dïpshït

Dead Congregation struck me as a crusty sound too, very similar to the mastering of Murder Construct – Results.

          • Howard Dean

Indeed. That’s a good observation. Before Dead Congregation, Anastasis (the guitarist) and Vagelis (drummer) were in the band Nuclear Winter, which was extremely crusty (its earliest stuff was very crust punk-ish).

          • Scrimm

I’m not a huge fan of the OSDM tag either, it’s just so widely used it is hard to avoid it. I just prefer saying it is death metal done the right way.

          • currently listening to dead congregation, per your enthusiasm. it’s great!

          • Howard Dean

            Byaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

      • Tyree

That should definitely make my list.

      • Tyree

You think that new Sacrocurse will make you best of?

        • Howard Dean

I have it on a preliminary list of mine, and I think it might make the best of. I really dig their style and sound. I like war metal/bestial black metal a lot, but one of the things that can seriously hamper my enjoyment of a war metal album is intentional underproduction. Sacrocurse is so crisp and (relatively speaking) clean compared to the dregs of the war metal scene, but plays that same type of ripping and brutal black/death.

          • Tyree

Well said Mr. Dean, I totally agree.

          • Tyree

Have you heard of Qrixkuor? These guys are right up your alley. I fucking enjoy this release so much!
            https://qrixkuordeath.bandcamp.com/releases

          • Howard Dean

Nice rec! That shit is tight! Oppressively heavy stuff. I’m listening to the first track of the demo right now. It has a really evil, eerie vibe that I love. And that vocalist is a monster. I’ll keep my eyes on these guys. Hoping they put something out a full length or EP at some point (preferably on CD). Also one of the least intelligible/hardest to pronounce band names I’ve seen in awhile.

          • Tyree

Yeah, that name is crazy. I’ll let you know if I hear anything about a full length. I’m following them on Bandcamp and Facebook.

          • Simon Phoenix

            This exactly.

I get that war metal is supposed to be raw and unforgiving, but i feel a lot of war metal bands would sound much better with production that didn’t sound like it was recorded with a coke bottle and a Fischer Price tape recorder (looking at you Embrace of Thorns).

    • Edward Meehan

Tyree the real question will be; can you can cut this down to ten albums?!

      • Tyree

That is the real question. I’ll worry about that when we get there mister.

  • Plz review the Ariana Grande tune.

    • KJM

      Booty.

      • You might be thinking of another pop star. Nikki Minaj or Iggy Azalea perhaps.

    • CÖÄL RÖLL FRÖM THE TÖILET BÖWL

“If a toy poodle could develop human vocal chords and memorize a song you would have that song. ” -J. Thrashnkill

  • Pyrrhon reminds me of Psyopus but with a dude who sings lower and doesn’t scream as often. Needless to say, i’m into it.

    • Wizard Aura

      Totally

  • Howard Dean
    • Tyree

      Amen.

    • W.

      SHOTS FIRED!

    • have fun helping them move the pool table for this dive-bar tour!!!

      • Howard Dean

We won’t move the pool table. We will smash it to bits with hammers, stab passersby to death with the splinters of wood, sacrifice the club owner to Satan/Odin, and then when the show is over, we will herd posers and tech death fans inside and burn the place to the ground like a twisted death metal Wicker Man.

        • W.

          Not the bees!

      • Howard Dean

This actually made me giggle. “That oh so heavy, backbreaking pool table…”

        • that was something our fallen brother RiotAct666 would say about every band except Metallica…

          • Howard Dean

I know, that’s why it made me laugh!

          • overexplanation is explained too much

          • DeeSnarl

RiotAct666 is a well-known troll around various metal sites over the last decade or so.

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan

Is he ever going to come here? I liked his comments on MS and I hope he comes here.

          • Scrimm

Me too there’s a couple people here that could use a little of his trolling.

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan

I agree. He should come here because people would enjoy him being here.

          • CÖÄL RÖLL FRÖM THE TÖILET BÖWL

MSD got upvotes from RA666 the other day. He is here

          • Scrimm

            I saw that. Great news.

    • Simon Phoenix
  • Metaphysical Anus

It’s nice to listen to good music like this while your knee is bleeding. It makes the pain go away.

    • Mass Effect was pretty intense then huh?

      • Metaphysical Anus

Nah. When I came home, my bike’s front wheel got stuck on some gravel that’s on my yard. I fell and my right hand and left knee got hit hard.

        • Ah I hate that shit. Then you feel it every time you bend your leg :/

          • Metaphysical Anus

I feel you. I don’t even know how many times my left knee has had this happen to it. It’s so fucking scarred.

          • I have been shot and beat up so many times i have like 50 % scar tissue. (if you haven’t watched 24, you should)

          • Metaphysical Anus

            I’m not gonna watch it!

          • why not?

          • Metaphysical Anus

It doesn’t interest me in any way.

          • fair enough.

          • Metaphysical Anus

For once you weren’t mean to me. I respect that, Jack.

          • Life is too short to be a dick to people I don’t even know that well. Plus you keep playing mass effect, which earns you points in my book lol.

          • Metaphysical Anus

Still contemplating if I should buy mass effect 3. The only thing making it hard is Origin itself.

          • Fucking hate origin, but it’s totally worth it. It’s a phenomenal game, aside from the ending, but there is a mod for a better ending.

          • Metaphysical Anus

I’ll probably buy it when I have the time.

          • ignore this ok thankx

          • Metaphysical Anus

            Wot?

          • nono i said ignore it lol.

          • Tyree

You scared me there for a moment Jack. I thought you meant the band, but then I read on and sighed in relief.

          • Lol that crossed my mind while typing it, but then I realized how could anyone possibly hate Origin the band?

          • Metaphysical Anus

Honestly, I don’t really care about them.

          • Metaphysical Anus

Just never really cared about them. I don’t hate them, but I don’t listen to them at all.

          • Randall Thor

Just do it dude, Origin isn’t that bad 😛

          • KJM

Pretty much any TV show that isn’t sci-fi or horror is a hard sell for me.

          • Metaphysical Anus

I don’t really watch TV nowadays. None of the show interest me. I sometimes watch BBC for QI and other shows like that, but that’s it.

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan

It’s so good though! Jack does awesome things in it!

    • mmmmmhmmmmm me like.

    • Metaphysical Anus

      Zzzzzzzzzzz

    • Scrimm

The new vocalist is Jorgen, the original Grave vocalist. I’m almost sure of it. I hope the new one is better than the fathomless asstery.

      • what about FA didn’t tickle your fancy?

        • Scrimm

Everything. Dry sound, boring, Nyquil Akerfeldt sounded like crap and most importantly, NO DAN SWANO!! I was so exited for it too.

  • Leif Bearikson

This Pyrrhon album didn’t do a whole lot for me. Maybe I’ll revisit it

    • you should. this album requires multiple visits. like how beans require multiple fryings.

      • Leif Bearikson

Jimmy, you always know exactly what to say

      • Mother Shabubu III

It’s a lot to take in all at once, too. My advice is find a song, or section of a song or three you like and listen to it a few times to take it. Then do the rest for the others songs. Break it into bite-sized pieces first, then listen to it in full and absorb the full experience.

  • Mother Shabubu III

I wouldn’t recommend taking drugs and listening to Pyrrhon. Their music is baffling enough as it is. It’s like a grimy, acid-soaked, Gorgutsian nightmare.

    • A Nightmare one wants to relive over and over and over and over and over again.

      • Mother Shabubu III

It’s like getting pegged or raped in a wet dream about some hot girl.

    • you and i might have a difference choice of drug… for it sounds absolutely lovely to me.

      • Janitor Jim Dvggan

If you think that sounds lovely wait until you read my article about 10 nu metal albums you must have. It’s a throwback to stuff you may remember and stuff you will want to hear. As you listen to the songs on the article I recommend wearing a pair of JNCOS, a POD shirt, a pair of Reeboks and banging your head while drinking a Mountain Dew Code Red and eating Bagel Bites.

    • Metaphysical Anus

      Drugs are bad, mkay

      • Mother Shabubu III

Who took a mud dragon in the urinal?

        • Metaphysical Anus

IF YOU THROW THAT AWAY I WILL RAPE YOU IN THE MOUTH!

          • drugs and/or booze might help with this anger issue…

          • Metaphysical Anus

It’s a south park quote. I belive that drugs and booze would derail what’s left of my sanity.

          • jimmy is ashamed for not catching the south park reference 🙁

          • Tyree

            Hahahahaha!

          • Metaphysical Anus

You can’t complain to me about missing south oark quotes anymore.

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan

The South Park game that came out this year was amazing. I recommend playing it.

          • Metaphysical Anus

It was good, but the post game had absolutely nothing.

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan

I never got to the post game. I’m still stuck near the beginning at the alien part.

          • Metaphysical Anus

Spoiler alert, there is no post game.

    • Cock of Steele

I thought Obscura was already a grimy, acid-soaked, Gorgutsian nightmare.

      • Mother Shabubu III

I see as more of a puzzling, nightmarish labyrinth. It’s pretty vivid, versus this which is clouded in noise and grime. It’s like the government DMT/LSD experiment subject-type homeless guy’s Gorguts.

      • Mother Shabubu III

Better yet; this is the Gorgutsian Captain Beefheart.

  • CyberneticOrganism
