Another wonderful day in Bandcamp Hell.

RuinebellDemise In Disgrace (Joensuu, Finland) 2011

I’m sharing this incredible three year old crusty EP with all y’all toilet germs whether you dig it or not. This may be an older release but it is by no means flushable; this is a band that needs acknowledgement.

Lasse Pyykkö, the guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, and vocalist of Ruinebell is a busy guy to say the least: the guy is driving  Hooded MenaceClawsPhlegethon and more. On drums is one of my favorite grindcore drummers/vocalists, Jose M. Dopico of MachetazoDishammer, and Mutilated Veterans. This crusty duo craft gloomy apocalyptic punk in the vein of the almighty AmebixSaw Throat, and Axegrinder. It’s almost as if Lasse and Jose were somehow in each of these bands in the late 80’s and consumed their apocalyptic formula. Before we continue on, here is a taste of some essential albums by AmebixSaw Throat, and Axegrinder that hold dear to my crusty heart and clearly influenced Ruinebell.

AmebixArise (Released on September 14th 1985 by Alternative Tentacles Records)

AxegrinderThe Rise of the Serpent Men (Released on January 1989 by Peaceville Records)

Saw ThroatInde$troy (Released on January 1989 by Manic Ears Records)

Much like the aforementioned bands, Ruinebell keep their crust-punk dark, apocalyptic, atmospheric, and metallic, not to mention heavy. The band mixes crusty punk with heavy riffs (Early Godflesh riffs, anyone?) but also add that gloomy atmosphere that nauseates the listener into grief and anger. Demise in Disgrace is a short but bleak crusty masterpiece that’s become all too rare these days. Hearing a band nail this style of apocalyptic crust punk is a treat, and Ruinebell excel in spite of the fact they have yet to release any material since this EP in 2011.

HorsehunterCaged In Flesh (Melbourne, Australia) 2014

Horsehunter may be young but they certainly don’t sound like it. These stoners have their sludge/doom songwriting formula down to a THC science. After spreading the word on tours with High on FireKylesaBeastwarsKing ParrotConan, and Windhand, the band have finally released their first full-length, Caged In Flesh. It’s difficult for a stoner sludge/doom band to hold your attention for a whole album, but Horsehunter  more than accomplish just that while providing a bevy of catchy, dynamic riffs layered with a fuck-ton of heavy tone.

FukpigThis World Is Weakening (Birmingham, UK) 2014

Paul Kenney is best known for his work with Anaal Nathrakh, but his blackened crust-grind project Fukpig is still in the dark for most people. Kenney has the lion’s share of songwriting and instrumental duties while Duncan “Drunk” Wilkins takes care of the vocals. After releasing two demos in 2001 and 2002, the duo took a 7 year break before releasing Spewings from a Selfish Nation in 2009. This World Is Weakening is a completely re-recorded version of Fukpig’s 3, which was first released in 2012 but ultimately disowned by the band. Expanding on 3, Spewings features a full studio line-up and a beefed-up track listing.

Nothing about this LP is pleasant, to the point I’d call this an overall heinous record. Dirty fuzzed bass, haunting synths and filthy guitars are layered over heavy d-beats and blasts with occasional double bass drumming. The vocals are probably the most vicious element of Fukpig though. Duncan’s screams are raspy and distorted and sound absolutely possessed. If you dig the album and are looking for a CD, you’re shit out of luck because they sold all 100 copies in 24 hours. A vinyl release is planned, so keep on the lookout for that.

The band also just released a brand new song with guest vocals from Emilie Salata. Somehow, this woman sounds even more possessed and insane than Duncan.

Kaliyuga – 7″ (Tunisia, France) 2013

Speaking of Emilie Salata…her band Kaliyuga play a ferociously fast and devastatingly crushing blend of crust and d-beat. The band is apparently quite young and has not released much from what I can find. After a set at Obscene Extreme Festival this year Kaliyuga are making a damn good impression. Salata’s screams are so vicious and raw you’d think she was being burned alive. According to their Bandcamp, Nidhal Mahmood writes all the songs and plays all the instruments in the studio. Mahmood’s drumming is some of the fasted and tightest d-beat playing I’ve heard it a long while. I’d compare his style to Adrian Erlandsson’s precise and fast d-beat playing in Skitsystem. The guitar work is quite catchy and creative with obvious influences from Nasum and Tragedy. Hopefully this young band keeps at it and delivers more crushing crustiness.

ArakkSelf & Distance (Copenhagen, Denmark) 2013

What really drew me into Arakk’s Self & Distance is the uniquely warm and soothing tone they bring to their brand of funeral doomHowling distant growls and shrieks echo across canyons of mournful synths and guitar chords filled with burden and sorrow. The beautiful, mournful interlude towards the middle of the song leaves the listener in a trance before slowly building back up to alluring heavy guitar chords and sorrowful howls again. Self & Distance is as beautiful as it is bleak, an epic journey that goes by faster than you’d think.

Just a quick heads up about saw throat in case you didn’t know. Inde$troy was a release they did under a different name. (Normally they released as Sore Throat) and they’re responsible for some of the most incoherently insane punk ever. They even did a 100 song LP before Scott Hull was out of nappies. http://youtu.be/EsP9cKXO5ng

Good list too. I look forward to this ev’ry week. Makes my friday happy.

    • Tyree

Thanks for explaining this. Sore Throat rule!

      • IronLawnmower

Disgrace to the corpse of sid is like something from a cheese dream.

        • Tyree

It’s so odd but I dig it. Especially the longer songs towards the end. This song in particular.
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuR3khwXiMM

          • IronLawnmower

Probably because it sounds like something other than RAH RAAH RAAH RAAH over some guitar notes and drum blasting. This reminds me of apocalypse man by black flag sorta.

          • Tyree

Hahaha, I’m just going to post that album so people can hear how insane it is.
            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggvkx8bWMFw

          • IronLawnmower

If the band were still around today they’d probably be thinking “your move, agoraphobic nosebleed” after putting out a 205 song LP

          • JWG

Somewhere out there, a grindcore project just formed with the sole purpose of creating a 1000-song LP, with 999 track lengths *just* long enough that they don’t beat Napalm Death’s ‘you suffer’ for shortness (the last one would be 10 minutes of random synth-pop done just to mess with listeners).

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

I was thinking of putting the synth song mid-album. Messes with them worse

          • Janitor Jim Dvggan

When the album cover is the most normal thing about the album you know that this is the king of incoherent insanity.

          • IronLawnmower

It’s completely and utterly brilliantly retarded in every way.

          • Tyree

            Go review! Nailed it. Hahaha

  • You had me at “as beautiful as it is bleak”.

    • Tyree

I’ve listened to that Arakk release about 6 times this week. Good stuff.

      • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

I love Funeral Doom, yet to get to Arakk. But seriously speaking. Look at that length, I don’t have time to listen to those songs for 6 time a week.

        • Tyree

I can listen to music at work so it’s not an issue for me.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

Where I used to work it was impossible. So it used to be an issue to me.

On another note, do you know the FD band My Shameful?

          • Tyree

I have not. I’m listening to a song from them now and it’s pretty good. FD is something I need to explore a bit more.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

I was just thinking, they’re Finnish. And looking for a bassist. Which I am. Was wondering how known they are as to how much gigging that’d include, I’ll have to find out elsewhere

  • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

My love Pyykkö just keeps on Growing, Ruinebell is crushing!

  • Fucking phenomenal post as usual Tyree! It is sure to drain my wallet a bit. I would also like to point out that NCS is streaming the new starkill album in full. http://www.nocleansinging.com/2014/10/10/an-ncs-album-premiere-starkill-virus-of-the-mind/

  • Howard Dean

Hooded Menace! Bring the death/doom! Byah!

  • Death

Best cover song ever (in my opinion)!
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eP3ge9DGsKU

  • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

I’m also going to share this. Everything Demilich has ever recorded in a nice package. Came out erarlier this year.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7WMeSehuI8

    • Scrimm

I still really need to get this.

      • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

I’d seriously consider it AOTY, but it kinda has nothing new on it. Wouldn’t really be fair.

        • Scrimm

Do it anyway. The rules shouldn’t apply to Demilich.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

            I might, it’s really sick

          • Xan

I’ve debated the same thing for Death’s remaster of “Leprosy”. There’s too much good new music for me to justify it though. I’ll give it an honorary position.

  • The Satan Ov Hell

PRAISE BE TO CRUST PUNK, HOW DARE YOU NOT MENTION THE MIGHTY DOOM! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfW7QZJDUbg

    • Tyree

Hahaha! Yes, how daaaaare I! Good tune. This is one of my favs here:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fH783wB9f4

      • The Satan Ov Hell

        Great tune! Haha!

      • Howard Dean

        Tyree,

Completely unrelated to this, but since it was a Getting Laid at Bandcamp that turned me on to Sacrocurse, I figured I’d put this here. I just need to express how difficult the battle is between my 2014 bestial/war metal stalwarts Sacrocurse and Diocletian. I’m not sure if both are going to make my AOTY list (given the new influx of amazing albums), so I’m going back and forth between the two, listening to them over again and comparing/contrasting. It’s tough. I think Sacrocurse is ahead a little right now, but I can’t confirm it. Brutal!

        • Tyree

I ordered the new Sacrocurse album on vinyl last week, I’m hoping to get it this today or tomorrow. I think Sacrocurse wins honestly. I tend to listen to Unholier Master way more than Gesundrian.

          • Scrimm

I hate waiting for stuff in the mail so much.

          • Tyree

Eh, me too. Don’t tell that to Recluse though 😉

          • Scrimm

I seriously considered ordering something and then freaking out two days later.

          • THEREALCONAN 6000 + COMMENTS

i do too, but then part of the fun is waiting as well, especially for me when my life is not exciting, which is most of the time.

          • Scrimm

            There is that.

          • Howard Dean

Up until now, I have listened to Unholier Master more, too. For me, Gesundrian has been clawing its way back into the mix, though.

          • Tyree

It’s hard to tell. I’m sure once the end of the year come’s I’ll be really comparing them.

    • sweetooth0

      DOOM!!!!!!

      So fuckin killer.

They even came to my little city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan not to long ago to play a gig!!

  • crazytaco_12

Hey Tyree, how would I get ahold of you to recommend some bandcamp stuff I’ve been checking out? Should I just shoot an email off to Joe and have him link it to you, or….?

    • Tyree

You could probably email Joe. I can ask him if he doesn’t reply to this. Do you have a Bandcamp account?

      • crazytaco_12

No, though I probably should because I’ve downloaded enough shit from there. I’ll hit up Joe then for sure.

  • crazytaco_12

Man dude, I’m loving this shit! That Ruinebell was definitely not what I was expecting it to be, definitely can hear that Godflesh comparison and really, really fucking dig it. I’d definitely like to hear more crust like this. Also, that Fukpig and Horsehunter were right up my alley! Still not even finished chewing through this week’s GLAB, but gotta say, props to Tyree!

    • Tyree

Glad you dig the tunes! I’m curious to hear what you have to show me.

      • crazytaco_12

Just sent the email to TOH. It’s in Joe’s hands now

        • Tyree

          NICE!

  • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

    ……….

    • Edward Meehan

Conan that’s a tight Baphomet tattoo. I got an Illuminati goat commander tattoo of my own.

      • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

What the good-goddamn is an Illuminati goat commander. I don’t remember there being such a being

        • Tyree

          Edwards tattoo is fucking siiiiiick!

        • Edward Meehan

          There is. Booyah.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

It all makes sense now. Cool tattoo

          • THEREALCONAN 6000 + COMMENTS

yea, thats a great tatt you got there, i only paid 40 bucks for the pentagram, and later put the baphomet on top for another 40. Didn’t cost much, knew a guy. Not perfect but i like em. Yours is really well done though.

    • Janitor Jim Dvggan

I thank Randy Savage that it’s Friday.

      • Howard Dean

        Ooooh Yeeeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

        • Tyree

          Snap into a Slim Jim!

        • Janitor Jim Dvggan

          Snap into a Slim Jim!

    • Xan

Dio is the man! I have come to respect him more and more over the years. A dude who made a lot of good music and was cool as hell. I like that his house had statues of dragons and swords on the wall too. I made it feel like he really loved what he did.

      • THEREALCONAN 6000 + COMMENTS

Yea, he did, probably one of my biggest musical regrets is not catching the heaven and hell tour in 2007 even though it was an expensive trip, i should have done it. He only played mid western canada once or twice in his solo career so i never saw him solo either. I just have all the live dvd’s.
I think it was real bullshit that the last go around with DIO wasn’t called black sabbath, because that’s what it was. Just as important as OZZY sabbath. I think Tony sold the name to sharon , making it a neccesity to change the name to H & H.

        • Xan

The Devil You Know was, in my opinion, a really good album. I always consider it a Black Sabbath album. I’ve yet to hear an album that Dio was on that I disliked. Many of his solo albums were excellent. I found the Magica album to be very cool. Nearly twenty minutes of Dio’s amazing voice just reading about his fictional world. It is a crime that he died before he could make the second one. I think there are a couple tracks that were going to go on it available out there on the internet.

          • THEREALCONAN 6000 + COMMENTS

I bought the import 2 cd editions of heaven and hell , mob rules, dehumanizer and born again. They are well worth it, remastered and the second discs have everything from full live shows, demo’s, outtakes, etc. From the UK. My favorite DIO album is strange highways from 94. It’s brutally heavy production wise, to me it is like a trilogy. The first being dehumanizer, then strange highways, followed by devil you know. It’s a very angry and anti-religious album with under rated guitar work from the unfairly maligned traci g. For me i don’t really care who is on guitar with DIO, as long as they can perform the material well. Of course tony on guitar is a whole different story.

  • sweetooth0

Nice to see Fukpig gettin’ some love. Those guys are the kings of blackened crust in my eyes. Managed to snag every release, even the original presses of Spewings from a Selfish Nation and Belief is the Death of Intelligence (had to do a vinyl subscription to get em), and I have the red/black sleeved World is Weakening vinyl (only 15 copies pressed!).

But these guys constantly put out small batch represses of their stuff, so if you head over to their facebook you can get the skinny.

  • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

  • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

Vaguely related as many of you have not heard this most likely. You gotta give it up for Svart records for diggin’ up these classics. Not only Demilich but also Rippikoulu’s classic demo

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjaV-3PLXh8

    • Tyree

Rippikoulu is heavy as a mothafuck.

      • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

What’d ya think of the new output, heard any yet?

        • Tyree

You talking about Rippikoulu’s newest release?

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

            yes

          • Tyree

I know I listened to it early this year but can’t really remember much about it. I’ll have to revisit it. I’m sure it’s brutal though.

          • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

It ain’t bad, but I prefer this. It’s only a couple of songs so we’ll see if they’ll release a full-length

  • CONAN THE MOTHERFUCKING KING

hahahaahhaha, check out this shit barbarian halloween out fit i found on ebay. This is what they are selling, no modification by me.

    • crazytaco_12

      Not seeing a link

    • JWG

I’m currently hunting for a Viking costume that doesn’t look like crap. Not even the theatre-company-associated costume designers in town have anything that looks marginally authentic.

The thing that annoys me most about every single one I’ve found so far, though, is that all have horned helmets. This makes some sense with the theatre departments though, as the Wagnerian misconception is utterly prevalent in all depictions of opera and theatre, which in turn fed the popular misconception.

    • Howard Dean

      Conan,

I know you use eBay a lot, as I’ve heard you talk about it a few times on here. I’m a big physical media collector (love my CDs), and I peruse the usual suspects: amazon, discogs, bandcamp, all of my favorite labels and distros, etc. I’d never used eBay in my life.

      Until today.

I just spent the last hour scouring eBay. My fuck is it addicting! I have two bids I’m waiting to close on now (the automatic max bid tool is awesome), and I’ve already gotten into my first bidding war. I also like that you can buy some stuff outright without having to bid (I picked up two CDs for pretty cheap this way). Hoping I win the two bids I’m in right now (one is an OOP gem).

eBay is Howard Dean approved. Much awesome.

      • Scrimm

I use the buy it now option constantly. I’ve only had one minor issue in several years of using the site.

      • NDN Ov Hell

I used to order cd’s from http://www.half.ebay.com. No bidding required! Haven’t ordered from there in years, but there might be some good stuff.

      • THEREALCONAN 6000 + COMMENTS

I have been on there since 99 buying and selling. Most of the selling i do i keep the money in my paypal account and buy more stuff. I was spending a grand a month for a while and had to get a 500 dollar limit on my credit card. Some tips – if possible and if you are awake wait till the last 30 seconds or so to throw in your high bid, you still have time to raise it. Starting a bidding war as soon as the item is listed can inflate the price as it stirs up other parties who worry about losing out. I guess the exception would be if you absolutely must have something, put in an outrageous $1000 bid at the last minute but then the consequences may be high as its a binding contract. Also make sure you search world wide as great bargains can be found from the UK and germany. They are not listed on ebay US sometimes. But if you ask them they usually will mail internationally. Also look for mispelling of band names, i have found great items because of simple mispellings like ozzie osbourne and led zepplin. A few ideas, but yea, the trouble with ebay is anything you think of can probably be found on there. Its a blessing and a curse, especially when i see a conan statue i need going for 1200 bucks.

        • Howard Dean

Nice! Thanks for the eBay advice, Conan! I like the name change! Byah!

          • THEREALCONAN 6000 + COMMENTS

Yea, it’s pretty strange to read an article and see your exact avatar and name has been making comments you didn’t write. So to avoid future problems i put up the 6000 comments since they can copy everything but not the amount of comments i have made.

          • Scrimm

Fuck yeah, the people who matter know who the real Conan is anyway.

    • Scrimm

I should wear this in the band picture for our album.

    • Xan

I found this in a Michael’s craft store:

  • JWG

Horsehunter & Arakk definitely saved for later investigation beyond those excellent samples.

I’m on a public wifi system at the moment. It’s not the sort that would block the download entirely, but it has been painfully spotty all morning and I’d be annoyed if it shut off in mid-download (even if I could just redo it again later).

  • FeelTheDarkness

    Amebix is the winner

  • Nordling Rites Ov Karhu

Goddammit, I know I shouldn’t, but I will. More crushing doom, with a little death and a cubic buttload of catchiness.

Everytime I read a “Getting Laid at Bandcamp”, I come away feeling like I’ve been beaten by an angry steroid man was a baseball bat with a brick and nails attached to it. So much heveh metul.

  • Lacertilian

That Horsehunter is pretty rad, just saw they’re from Melbourne too.
Might be able to see them too one day, unlike the multitudes of other bands mentioned everywhere always.

My heart is covered in blackened crust
