The Toilet Ov Hell loves death metal vocalist Will Smith – both our writing team and our community. You can find our community on these articles seven days a week and on Facebook. Get on that shit if you haven’t. Interact with Toilet Ov Hell writers and editors twenty four hours a day! In case you don’t believe me, Will Smith’s various projects have been covered at the Toilet Ov Hell here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here, and I probably missed a couple stories, fuck. In case you still don’t believe me, Artificial Brain’s Labyrinth Constellation was selected as our community’s favorite heavy metal album of 2014. I even got a chance to meet and chat with Will Smith in 2014.

I recently received an email to check out a band.

I initially assumed it was because the sender recognized my articles from this site and understood at an intrinsic, molecular level that I am the future of heavy metal blogging.

brandominic2

Ha. He was unfamiliar with us at the Toilet Ov Hell offices, but I was happy to fill him in. It turns out we were both in luck that day. Bran learned about our site, and I discovered a band called Coma Cluster Void for the first time.

The pedigree of the band members involved is what really grabbed my attention. Coma Cluster Void will feature the aforementioned Will Smith on vocals, along with Mike DiSalvo (vocals), John Strieder (guitars), Sylvia Hinz (bass), and Chris Burrows (drums). Mike DiSalvo has done vocals for Cryptopsy, who have also been covered here at the Toilet Ov Hell.

Coma Cluster Void was previously covered by Vince Neilstein at Metalsucks. Vince made much of the fact that this is “ten string guitar death metal”, and recommended this band for fans of Ulcerate, Nero di Marte, Dysrythmia, and Portal… but how are the songs?

We could easily call last year the “year of dissonant skronk” – apart from the tremendous amount of hideous sludge and great black metal that was released in 2014. Dissonant skronk is a thing, and a lot of people around here like that shit. You guys are in luck. This four track demo brings the dissonant skronk. It brings the deathy math and the mathy death. It earns its avant-garde label in spades. This four track demo is still in the skeletal phase of its creation. It features a slow churning, deep space interlude, a minute plus from a track labeled “Petrified Tears”, a minute plus from another track called “Drowning in Sorrow”, and thirty seconds of a different as of yet untitled track. These tracks sound monstrous. I’m interested to hear the final versions of these songs – especially with dual vocals from Smith and DiSalvo. More information about this band would be welcome, but I am anticipating a 2015 release.

You can also check out Coma Cluster Void demos on Soundcloud, like the band on Facebook, and if you really dig this demo you can pick up a tee shirt to support them.

For the curious: The Coma Cluster (Abell 1656) is a large cluster of galaxies that contains over 1,000 identified galaxies. Along with the Leo Cluster (Abell 1367), it is one of the two major clusters comprising the Coma Supercluster. It is located in and takes its name from the constellation Coma Berenices. Will, you can just slip that royalty check under the door when you get a chance. Also, are 10-string guitars really necessary?

    • Maybe they’ve got really, really big hands.

    • HessianHunter

No, but neither are 6-string guitars or paint in the color red. Dunno if y’all have beef with Gear Gods, but I think this article defending extended range guitars is on point. http://geargods.net/m/suppose-write-serious-article-9-string-guitars/

      • DDubya.

Did you see his note at the very end about 10-strings? 🙂

        • HessianHunter

Ha, yeah, fair. I figure he’s gotta be taking the piss a bit on that one, though.

My band uses 2 drummers and we get asked all the time, “Do you really NEED two drummers?” and the answer is no, we don’t NEED anything, but we like it because we think it sounds good. FIGHT ME, POSERS

          • DDubya.

Haha, yah I know it was a joke. I know some bands definitely can and do make good use of extended range guitars, but it sometimes seems a waste to me when those bands just ride the two low strings the whole time.

Then again, I’m a hypocrite because I love Meshuggah, so whatevs. I was moreso just asking if any musicians could tell me whether or not these guitarists are actually playing something that requires the extra strings or if it’s just sort of a style thing.

            Also, two drummers sounds radical.

          • HessianHunter

That article makes the argument that people that chug in super-low range, meshuggah style, are really playing as bassists; they just have a bunch of high strings too for adding skronk and atmosphere. I think it’s an interesting way to think about it.

          • DDubya.

What I’m taking away from this conversation is that we need more Chapman sticks in metal.

          • Which band?? I want 2 listen.

          • HessianHunter

Since Maeth put out our last record is when we added the 2nd drummer, so no proper recordings exist yet. You can hear some double drum wickedness on a new jam at about 6:40 of this footage from our St. Vitus show.
            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb_Q5dpEwKw

          • I see no pumpkin suit. Wait, you guys switch drumming spots? wow. This is great music man!

            GL

          • HessianHunter

Yeah, we switch who plays what kit depending on the song, just based on who’s feeling inspired to write on which set of drums. And thanks, georgy. :3

          • where’s the pumpkin suit!?!?!

          • HessianHunter

I told you guys I kinda look like “Viking Matt Damon” irl. My pumpkin suit wouldn’t fit in the tour van. 🙁

          • don’t say that name! I was very trolled in the first 2015 post by that guy 🙁 🙁 🙁 And, Hessian: #BringPumpkinSuit2015!

          • This is siqq dude. At some point we’ll have to talk about bands with drummer duos at great length

          • DDubya.

            Kylesa have two drummers, yes?

          • They do! I’m trying to think back on when the two drummer thing first started. Aside from the Phil Specter wall-of-sound thing on recordings maybe Gary Glitter (who is an awful piece of shit but did make some jams)?

          • DDubya.

I know Ministry, oddly enough, started using two drummers around the time they wrote The Mind…

          • I did not know dat

          • DDubya.

I’m having a hard time finding a decent video, but it looks like two drummers from this old concert. I could totally be wrong though.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9r93RkJg8g

          • HessianHunter

In the heavy music world, I think Melvins have done it the best out of the well-known 2-drummer bands. I think with Kylesa there’s a lot of wasted potential. With two drummers playing the same thing it sounds thick and heavy, which is cool, but when we decided to do it we said that we absolutely didn’t want to to that all the time, or even most of the time. You can see we have very different setups, where one of us is actually more of a “percussionist” or whatever, which means that we will naturally write different stuff. We’re both polyrhythm freaks to the point that we’re playing in different time signatures almost as often as we’re not.

Really though, we’re just standing in the shadow of our labelmates from Wisconsin, Poney. They fucking rule with their 2nd percussionist.

          • You’re both in the shadow of the greatest percussive force on the planet.

          • HessianHunter

I don’t hate Slipknot, I think just because I actually think a lot of the drumming is very cool. I dig Corey Taylor’s voice, too. I cannot even remember a Slipknot guitar riff to save my life right now, though.

          • Haha. I am admittedly not a Slipknot fan so perhaps I don’t see the appeal, but this song (especially that intro) really just sounds like a mess to me.

            *continues listening to Whitehouse*

          • HessianHunter

In the vocal intro to the song, his hi-hat accent is on beats 2+ and 4+, which gives it a very cool uncertain bounce and keeps the listener’s ear confused so that the intro hits harder than if he were guiding you clearly to the backbeats by accenting 2 and 4. Kinda kewl, rite guise? Guise?

          • NERD. I’m just gonna listen to Psyopus and drown out all this math junk.

Best use of 2 drummers I have heard thus far.
I like the guitar tones (especially for a live recording) and the way the focus shifts around the parts.

          • HessianHunter

            Aw, shucks!

          • Gurptitude

            DOPE. FUCKING. SHIT.

          • a local band in Charlotte called Base of Bass has two drummers and is ultra stoner too, if you guys make it out this far, you have to play together and make a 4 drum circle of doom

          • Stanley

Two drummers are very cool. But sometimes lolbuttz.

Scratch that, he IS an Oompa-Loompa. Mystery solved!

          • Lacertilian

Looks more like a Luigi Lemay to me.

          • I’m waiting for him to bring the flaming cheese and yell “Opa!”.

      • Starring a mustachioed R. Lee Ermie on the 900 string! OOOO RAH!!!!
        Either that, or Borat’s grandpa.

  • Edward/Breegrodamus

I don’t want to put this in stone or anything, but I bet as we get more information about this album’s release I could get an interview with guitarist John Strieder.

EDIT: I don’t want to put this in stone but let me leave it on the internet for everyone to see forever.

  • DDubya.

Also, these songs have a very similar feel to some of the slower moments on Dodecahedron’s self-titled album.

        Dudecahedron

      Dodecahedron >>>>>>

    • Corey Tay Tay

The first one really reminds me of Sunn O)))
Also what is skronk I never heard that term before.

      • Edward/Breegrodamus

skronk is heavy metal dissonance, the term was popularized as far as I know from the Gorguts album Obscura. Skronky death metal is super in right now, bands like Artificial Brain, Pyrrhon, Ulcerate, etc.

        • Corey Tay Tay

Thanks I haven’t listen to Artificial Brain yet gonna check that out.

  • BLXKKBEXRD

What dat means, “what’s ToH”? Scruggin hard. Dis definitely skronky tho

    • KJM

      Basic Scrugonomics.

  • Hubert, Goat ov/of SATAN!!!!!

This band is only getting attention on larger sites because of the 10-string thing, and that’s making me angry.

As for the music, it’s okay, but it doesn’t do much things very different from the other bands in the genre accept for the occasional Meshuggaing.

    • Yup, the longest song is very Meshuggah-Pechuggah.. The first one was more interesting.

      #10StringFrontedMetal is the new #FemaleFrontedMetal

    • Edward/Breegrodamus

Hubert I want to hear this with the dual vocals. I bet that shizzz is gonna kill.

      • Hubert, Goat ov/of SATAN!!!!!

        It might, it might.

  • RustyShackleford

The toilet is literally the reason that I got into skronk. Fucking hooked on it now. Edward you da man. Yep!

    • Edward/Breegrodamus

Thanks Rusty! I’m really just a cog in the machine.

      • Hubert, Goat ov/of SATAN!!!!!

    • Edward/Breegrodamus

Hey TDTR! That’s actually a quote from Jay-Z and one of my favorite lines from him. It’s sad but I dunno if anyone checks all of the Easter eggs in these articles, I snuck a couple of hip hop and hip hop-esque EEs in this one.

      • TrickleDownOvTacoKvltRiff

        haha…great quote then..cuz I be skimming!

  • Good shit Edward!

  • Stanley

Please can we all just go back to 6 string guitars?

  • frozengoatsheadupanunsarse

Promisingly sinister, hotly anticipating the vocals.

    • Edward/Breegrodamus

Agreed. I can’t wait to hear the finished product on these songs.
