The Good: Saw The Anciients and Dead Quiet in a dingy dark tiny club last night and it fucking ruled. Got lotsa merch.

The Bad: I have to work tomorrow, nuke the fucking world.

    The Ugly: Trump.

  • Good: I’ve been buying lots of used Todd Rundgren and Utopia LPs after the missus introduced me to his music not long ago. Jesus fucking Christ, this guy was such a strange genius. The 30-minute song on the first Utopia album is up there with the best Yes/Crimson/Genesis of the 70s.

Also good: just had a 13 hour, Nyquil-and-muscle-relaxer-assisted sleep after spending two days traveling. Seven flights in two days with a head cold fucking sucks but I feel best kind now.

Good, too: the latest Paganizer, Dawn of Disease, Witch Vomit, and Winds of Leng releases got lots of play while I was traveling. What a glorious time to be into death metal.

    • Brutalist_Receptacle

Check out Deface the Music by Utopia. CLASSIC.

      • Got it already but haven’t listened to it! I heard it’s supposed to be Beatlesy.

      • Janitor Jim Duggan

        I love that album.

    • Howard Dean

I saw on FB that Winds of Leng is prepping for a CD release. Byah!

    • Janitor Jim Duggan

I love Utopia. I have all their albums on vinyl. I also saw Todd in May. He was great and Utopia’s bass player still performs with him. Greg Hawkes of The Cars also performs with him as does Prairie Prince who is a beast of a drummer.

      • Brutalist_Receptacle

He is a wizard. A true star. Speaking of The Cars, they just released two remastered (Candy O and Panorama) with previously unreleased tracks.

        • Janitor Jim Duggan

I already own Candy O. I also own Heartbeat City.

  • Howard Dean

    Good: A few things.

    1. Dinner tonight is going to be fucking awesome. Can’t wait.
    2. Weekends are pretty neat.
    3. This https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/8aaf43c5d77f3f27b53437da0568225444517b78daacd38509591a3869d520ef.jpg

    Bad/Ugly: Nothing. Hail optimism.

    • Howard Dean

[apparently the kid in the above graphic has a speech impediment to accompany his terrible attitude and shit taste in music]

      • more beer

You would have a speech impediment too, if your father was cracking you upside the head with a board.

    • Count_Breznak

      Break boards, not oaths.

      • more beer

        Break oaths with boards!

  • Jeff Manteiga

Good: Mailmanbro completed my physical copy collection of Cormorant’s LPs!!

Bad: Lindy’s Italian Ice. Fuck that. Luigi’s TRVE (real**) Italian Ice or gtfo.

    Ugly: Blisters from tapping D:

    • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Cormorant…there’s a band I’ve tried to get into, but just couldn’t…
Their artwork is fucking awesome though.

      • Jeff Manteiga

I’m curious, what keeps you turned off to them?

        • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I honestly have no idea tbh. Especially considering I can dig stuff by some of those style-mixing metal bands. I love classic Opeth, Maudlin of the Well, Akercocke’s Words That Go Unspoken…, Gojira’s From Mars to Sirius or The Way of All Flesh, Mastodon’s first four albums… and I think Cormorant is somewhat comparable to the aforementioned stuff in terms of approach to the metal genre. So I should find something to like in Cormorant, but for some reason they just never clicked with me…

          • Jeff Manteiga

Sometimes these things are inexplicable! Like me and WITTR…although that new track is actually pretty siqq, thoughts?

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I love the first two WIITR albums, but their subsequent albums never really got a lot of spins from me. Always go back to Diadem or Two Hunters.
I’ll definitely check out the new album tho; new track is pretty solid.

  • Count_Breznak

Good: New job. Way mo money. Mail delivering personal better start cardio.
Bad: No flat/house yet, motel for now. Also: Won’t see the cute mailwomansis (who always had spare change in case of c.o.d.) anymore.

  • FrankWhiteKingOfNY
    • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Not metal, but also GOOD: Gentle Giant and Captain Beefheart

      • Janitor Jim Duggan

        Gentle Giant>>>>>>>>

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY
        • Señor Jefe El Rossover

Can’t wait for the new album!!!

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Here comes a shitty Frank opinion: Manowar hasn’t really made a great album since 1984 so I don’t think the new one will be pleasant to Frank’s ears.

Into Glory Ride is their best by quite a margin imho (and coincidentally it has the cringiest album cover).

          • Señor Jefe El Rossover

New SOLSTICE album this year, Manowar is done.

Into Glory Ride is my favorite as well, followed closely by Hail To England.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I really, honestly had no clue about this.

Currently I’m very much so anticipating the upcoming Pagan Altar and Akercocke releases.

          • Señor Jefe El Rossover

            Scroll through for a bit.

Also looking forward to Pagan Altar, myself.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Damn good. Solstice is one of the few bands that manages to sound actually somewhat “medieval”.

          • Señor Jefe El Rossover

You dig Warlord, Atlantean Kodex, Wrathblade or Doomsword?

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Warlord is great; I think their Deliver Us EP is their best work. It’s not really “medieval” tho, it more has a somewhat ghostly vibe.
            Doomsword is solid as well.
Atlantean Kodex is pretty good, but I don’t really jam them a lot.
I’m not that familiar with Wrathblade.

The thing with Solstice’s New Dark Age album is that it has this really distinct Anglo-Saxon marsh battlefield vibe, without sounding cartoonesk and ridiculous.

          • Señor Jefe El Rossover

This Warlord album has a Medieval vibe, methinks

I totally get what you mean, Solstice have a knack for constructing those moods.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

That Warlord album is good. Haven’t listened that one in quite a while.
            Wrathblade sounds pretty solid.

          • Señor Jefe El Rossover

Wrathblade is a bit more barbaric.

    • Janitor Jim Duggan

I saw Helstar with Flotsam and Jetsam last November. They were good.

      • Mega-Troll the Magnificent

Hey MB. I see you’re here as well. Just to let you know that MS banned me! Glad I did something to get up their nose. 😉

        • more beer

Damn I can’t believe they banned you, considering some of the really fucked up shit I have read there. It’s a good community here. Not like MS

          • Mega-Troll the Magnificent

I think they banned someone else as well. He posted using a different IP address saying so and that he’s chucked it in for good – soon after the message dsappeared. They’re out hunting witches now.

          • more beer

They have been hunting witches. But what is more disturbing is they are now endorsing censorship.

          • Mega-Troll the Magnificent

…and asking other people to join in. I wonder how they’ll react when those people say no. Brand them as something nasty? And so it goes on.

That post I made about giving their address (so as to make them feel what it’s like to be ‘doxed’), I kid you not when I wrote that they have bars on the door and windows – the only one in the neighbourhood, even the parking space outside appears to be blocked off from use. Can’t say for sure why but…

          • more beer

Destroyer 666 doxed them months ago. when they started calling them Nazis. They didn’t learn a damn thing. So are you from Europe living in New York? Since you have intimate knowledge of the way their office looks. I grew up in New York and live in Denver now. I spent lot of time on the New York scene staring in the early to mid 80’s and am still part of the scene here. These clowns wouldn’t have lasted an hour on the scene back then. To say it was rough is an understatement. I don’t think I ever went to a show back then where there wasn’t a fight or multiple fights. It’s just how it was back then. I can tel you why their office is barred up like that, because they talk so much shit about people that they are terrified someone is going to kick in their door and beat their asses, that’s why.

          • Mega-Troll the Magnificent

Based in Europe. I was curious one evening so googled for their address and then copy/pasted into Google Earth, then went the street view. Took less than half-a-minute. Just google ‘metalsucks brooklyn address’ and I think it was found under discogs.com.

Yep, I can imagine these idiots cowering in the corner of a room back in the 80’s. That’s the trouble with the internet – it gives these cowards the enormous space between them and their ‘readership’ to spout their crap. They’re ridden with teenage angst but have never grown up, and that angst has twisted them into shitty people.

          • more beer

            Very shitty people.

  • Retchin’ Rites ov Karhu

GOOD: On my way to “home” from a Barathrum show, who still kick many assess live.

BAD: Terrorist attack in Turku earlier today, cops armed with smgs filling Helsinki. Few days ago a car drove into a crowded street and there was talk of a suspect gas causing people to have difficulties breathing at the heart of Helsinki just now.

UGLY: I don’t know what to feel and a s a result my face is trying to adapt into bliss, anger and anxiety among other things simultaneously.

    • Señor Jefe El Rossover

      Stay safe, my bear.

  • sweetooth0

fuckin sweet, dogs on skateboards rule!

GOOD: It’s FRIDAY!!! Managed to score the limited edition (with all the X-rated nastiness) of “Thriller: A Cruel Picture” from a cult/horror group I’m in. Folkfest is on right now in Saskatoon, so we hit it up last night, and the passports are good for all days. Bring on the drinks of the world! That fucking death metal post this morning was some top shelf filth! We’re headin’ out to my buddy’s place in Rosthern (about 45 min out of Saskatoon) to watch some 4K movies on his crazy TV this weekend, and then camp out in his backyard with a fire and stuff, so should be good times. Also been making good progress on my backyard reno (haven’t thrown out the ol’ back yet!).

BAD/UGLY: Hmm, honestly, things are pretty good for me and mine so I can’t really think of anything to complain about.

  • Guacamole Jim

GOOD: If any of you have ever seen Letterkenny, I had a conversation yesterday identical to the beginning of every of Wayne’s conversations:

“Hey, it’s Jamie with Edmonton metal; how are you now?”
Me, because it’s too good: “Good, and you?”
    Jamie: “Oh, not so bad”

    My life is complete.

Also, it’s Friday! Feels fucking great. Gonna play some video games tonight, then work on music all day tomorrow. Some of this delicious whiskey to accompany said events:

    • Howard Dean

      Rye whiskey >>>>>>>>>>

My whisky for the weekend (the insane peat-iness polarizes folks, but I fucking love it):

      • The Mighty Thorange

Have my obligatory Islay Single Malt upvote. However, Laphroig has never been my thing. It’s not the peaty, smoky flavour, but the extremely oily texture that puts me off. I prefer Lagavulin and Ardbeg personally.

        • Lacertilian

          Lagavulin is my fave too.
Ardbeg for when I wanna drink that makes me question my existence, and Laphroaig for something in between.

          • The Mighty Thorange

I once had a 16 year old Ardbeg. It was a borderline religious experience.

          • Lacertilian

            Hahah fuck!
Sadly I’ve only got a couple of drams of my 10 y/o Ardbeg left.

          • The Mighty Thorange

That’s a shame. But some is better than none.

        • BobLoblaw

Ardberg is excellent. Jura is good if you enjoy the sweeter notes and Talisker is just plain delicious.

      • MetalMartin

        Peated is alsways good! 😋

      • Guacamole Jim

Laphroaig is always a good choice. Give me a well-peated scotch any day!

  • Lord of Bork

Good: My Mizmor cassette discog and Power Trip vinyl orders should be arriving soon. Looking forward to finding more ways to waste my income.
    Bad: Nazis
Slightly less bad: Nazis v. Juggalos 2k17 GET HYPE
    Ugly: See slightly less bad

  • GOOD: next week taking two days off work, going to hang with a good friend and see Marduk, Incantation, and Abysmal Dawn!
BAD: Alien Covenant is bad. yuck.

    • sweetooth0

It has problems a plenty, but as far as visuals and whatnot go it’s certainly excellent. And some of those Alien attacks are just visceral on a level that none of the others in the series have captured. Like when it runs at them in the middle of the field, feels like an actual animal attack caught on film.

      • Jeff Manteiga

I agree, the dog-like pale ‘morphs were terrifying to watch. At least that part was really well done.

      • the visuals are good. parts of the story are good. but there were too may bad things about it (amazingly stupid crew member decisions, over-indulgent CGI when practical effects would have been sufficient, poor pacing, all of the dialogue)
gosh darn it i’m angry because it fits in with the Alien universe and it was directed by the man who created that universe. if it was stand-alone, i could just brush it off. because i really do like Prometheus and Alien 1-4, my only option now is to make my own movie to fill in the gap between those films.

        • sweetooth0

my opinion of it is that it has all of the problems of Prometheus (plot holes, absolutely idiotic characters), then it’s hobbled by the fact that he caved into fan pressure and made it another Alien sequel instead of a Prometheus sequel. I really wanted to see where they would take that story, but now it’s ruined and we’ll just get more rehashed Alien stuff. But visually, it’s great. And also it has some awesome gore scenes, so as braindead horror I’ll give it a pass. Lord Satan knows I watch, and love, far shittier movies than this.

Good: the sandwich I just ate, Nazareth

Bad: Missing the Goo Goo Dolls concert i was going to go to because I have work.

I just found out about this Columbo statue, and I may have to add that to my list of things to see up close for myself (eventually):

Ongoing gastrointestinal issues, but at least I finally convinced my GP to refer to a specialist. Might not hear from them about an appointment until later September, though.

Been busy hope everyone has a good weekend, so it looks like they are starting to promote a new music venue down here in Miami Downtown area which is great for me, since i can just take Uber instead of driving or finding parking since that area is not good, a lot of breaking into cars, and so far they have announce, Argentinian Band Rata Blanca, and Whitechapel and Rings of Saturn, i have listen to 3 Chapel albums, i have heard the name of rings of Saturn, have not bother to check them out, but is good news, since it might be a bigger venue than Churchill’s so hopefully we can get some good bands down here.

  • Spear

GOOD: I started taking guitar lessons again, and I don’t think I’ve been so thrilled to play since I first picked up the instrument. Recording again, too, and I managed to rip through my toughest solo last weekend.

CONFUSING: this line from the BB article got me thinking-

“Metal fans are inured to outrage from outsiders their music as scary or even dangerous. Combined with The Satanic Panic and PMRC battles of the late 80s and early 90s, metal heads often feel extremely defensive of calls for censorship of their music.”

While basically everyone into metal decries censorship, I found it odd how many people seem to be trying to be subjected to it. “Keep metal dangerous” is nothing more than a rallying cry for people trying to feed their victim complex; they want to recapture that rebellious feeling they got when they first started listening to metal, but everyone knows it’s all for show. The same people who point to lyrics like Arghoslent’s and say, “It’s just fantasy, don’t be a bitch,” are the same people demanding that they be taken seriously. Mind boggling.

    Good: This week is over.
Bad: This last week has been possibly the worst in America since 2001 as far as raw hatred goes.
Better: Time for me to unplug for 25 hours and go sing and chant in Hebrew.

  • Good: Still alive
Bad: On the fourth day of the stomach flu. Fuck this shit

Hope you all have a great weekend!

  • The Mighty Thorange

GOOD: The Defenders is out on Netflix and it’s great so far. Almost completed my work for this university module re-sit. Deadlines on Tuesday, should have it all done on Monday. Whether it’s good enough to pass or not, I long stopped giving a fuck. I will be just be happy to be finally fucking done with the whole thing.
BAD: Still got that last bit of work to finish.
    UGLY: Racist Nazi scumfuckery.
    METAL: New Ensi-fucking-ferum!

  • KJM, Anla’Shok

GOOD: Managed to see Slayer and a Primus/Clutch show within the same weekend.
