Flush it Friday: A Meeting of the Minds

Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro, two of the greatest actors of their generation, starred together in 1974’s The Godfather, Part 2, one of the greatest films of modern cinema, but they did not appear together in a single scene together. It took nearly 20 years for the two titans of their craft to finally share the screen. Michael Mann’s 1995 crime thriller Heat sat the pair face to face in a tense scene between Pacino’s intense Lt. Hanna and DeNiro’s tough criminal character Neil McCauley.

Today, metal fans the world over were finally treated to their Heat moment. Acclaimed Sirius/XM Liquid Metal host, Affliction model, and all-around cool dude Jose Mangin shook the very foundations of the metalsphere by Tweeting a photo of his historic meeting with former Headbangers Ball, Loveline, and Rock of Love host Riki Rachtman. The pairing represents over 90 years of combined experience in the realm of obnoxious posing. What a time to be alive.

    The Good: Nothing
The Bad: It won’t stop raining
The Ugly: my basement is flooding. Fuck my life.

    Have a good weekend all!

    • Rick Chard

The good: Don’t have a basement
The bad: must live in the same area cause it won’t stop fucking raining
      The ugly: Me 🙂

  • Joaquin Stick

Good: Unless Mesarthim releases an EP tomorrow, I won’t have to change my name. Which is nice.
Bad: Procrastinating on everything so I actually have to get shit done now, and fast.
Ugly: See Tigeraid. Hope my basement isn’t flooding though.

  • Just Hans

I’m on a bit of a Doom binge, but balancing it with Grind, so I was pleased to find that In Disgust released something new back in January.

GOOD: The weather’s nice, so I’m riding to the brewery.

    BAD: Lucifer’s Dungeon, yeesh.

    UGLY: That healthcare abomination yesterday.

Yeah, so uuuuh can you and your Cyberdine chronies just get on with the apocalypse now? Trumpcare is heading in that direction anyway.

    • Call your dem reps and tell them to embrace Medicare for all or get the fuck out

      • JWG79

Some group with deep pockets should offer to pay
congresscritters to send them on all-reasonable-expense-paid fact-finding
missions to talk with the healthcare communities in just one of the countries whose systems they disparaged as
‘socialist’. My vote would be obvious, but Denmark, Sweden or even the
UK (just ignore the anti-NHS trolls) would do.

        In particular:
        – Health Ministers (regional)
        – Health Authority CMOs (but not the CEOs)
        – Medical Associations
        – Nursing Professional Associations
        – Medical Informatics Associations
        – Patient Advocacy Groups- Patients with Chronic and/or Preexisting Conditions in-hospital (or out)
        – Their families. Especially their children.

Those who go along with it can be marked as only ‘maybe’ in danger or replacement. The rest can be put right on the hit list.

        • Max

Donald Trump was just quoted as saying that Australia’s healthcare system was “better than ours.”

So why’d you make it even worse, Donald?

        • Just Hans

I’ve heard the end of Rainy Season described as the heaviest breakdown in Metal and am inclined to agree. Or maybe it was “best”. Either way.

          • for sure it’s one of the few acceptable breakdowns in metal, haha!

  • JWG79

    Good:
    – Massive tax return predicted
    – It’s a week closer to Sunrise Records opening another store here to replace the gap left by the loss of HMV (Canada). Still no set date available anywhere for the Grand Opening, but I feel it’s very likely to be revealed early this month

Bad: Provincial Election early voting is under way, nothing will change so I’m not sure why I should bother.

Ugly: Rain forecast all weekend. Unfortunately not enough to drown in.

    • JWG79

Oh. Update on last week’s technology-SNAFU “Bad”:

It turned out that I was right that it wasn’t a Flash issue at all, but rather that the drivers controlling my sound, video, and network were completely borked by the W10 update. The audio drivers were patched early in the week, the network driver updated yesterday. Still waiting on whether or not there will be one for video, but so far it hasn’t been as much an issue as I thought it would be.

Every once in a while I still have YouTube or Netflix loading issues, but since the major cause was the old network driver not being able to maintain a fixed connection and that’s been patched video problems are rare and typically require just a browser refresh.

  • Grvm Spectre ov Derth

Ugly: I’ve been cramming in a lot of sci-fi movies/series (Matrix trilogy, revisiting Alien series, NGE, etc). Now I’m paranoid that we either live in a simulation run by some AI god, or that Elon Musk is the singularity slowly becoming self-aware.

Bad: I’m back to needing a new job. I’m just tired of what I’ve been doing for three years. Want to find something I can enjoy doing, or at least have a passion for. Maybe if I try sleeping harder I can find it.

Good: The sleeves on this shirt that came today. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/5a4ec3a2a254dc8444aa7996cc22b693f243f6d2711bb066b63c8bb15d6b6d98.jpg

Everybody should see the Void. Then read my article. /shamelessplug

        • Wet W’s Whistle

Watching it tonight with some bros. Will hopefully be cracking open a cold one too.

          • JWG79

I’m not sure what beer pairs best with The Void, but I should definitely contemplate that further.

I shalt watcheth, but first I have a queue of stuff to binge this weekend.

  • Taylor

    Good: http://www.paletteswapninja.com/2017/05/01/new-album-princess-leias-stolen-death-star-plans/
I’ve never seen the Star Wars movies but I do enjoy this remake of Sergeant peppers lonely hearts club band. It brightens my day off and is pretty clever if I say so myself. Sorry if somebody already posted this I haven’t seen it so I don’t believe I’m doubling up on posts.
Bad: the weather has been quite dreary and I’m supposed to be getting thunderstorms tonight so I know that my dogs will be unhappy
Ugly: my life has actually been pretty good so not much ugly

  • Good: Departing my job for the day to consume filth and beer for the night
Bad: Seeing the photo of Riki Rachtman brings back terrible memories of the many Saturdays I sat for 3 hours and waited for that poser asshat to play ONE good video that was not Winger Poison butt rock.
Ugly: Those two posers in the header image

  • JWG79

It’s a slow Friday afternoon/evening on the toilet.

A higher-fibre diet would prevent that. Just saying.

    • Just Hans

But then we’d all be sitting on the… ooooh I get it.

  • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

    Bad:

After today’s doctor’s visit it has been decided that my recovery should be prolonged with another month. A week ago I had some complications; an internal abscess in my stomach and another infection – meaning I had to be filled to the brim with antibiotics again – and now I have a bladder infection (which is apparently another post-surgery complication) making it feel like I’m pissing fucking needles.
On top of that, thanks to my wonderful physical state at the moment, I’m not able to partake in the bachelor weekend a pal of mine is having.
    This. Fucking. Sucks.

    Bad:

Another underage girl in a town nearby was recently raped by 2 Afghan refugees. I know this isn’t the place to vent my anger about stuff like this – but I’m a very openminded guy who always had and still has good contacts in the established “foreign” (if I can even call them like that, the majority of them grew up or were even born in Belgium) communities like the Italian, Turkish, Moroccan, Kurdish and Albanian ones. Yet there’s stuff happening right now with some refugees – definitely not all, mind you, I know a couple of Syrian guys at my gym and they’re all very respectable people – that is completely unacceptable.
If you’re a rapist, I don’t care what your background is, indigenous or foreign: someone should cut off your nuts. I’ll leave it at that.

    Bad:

Some first class dirtbag in my area has been getting a kick out of trying to poison animals. This piece of shit has been leaving poisoned meatballs at places all over the entire area where people walk their dogs. At times he has even gone so far to throw them in people’s backyards. This has been going on for a while now and they haven’t been able to catch the bastard yet.

Ranting finished, I’m going to swallow some valium now.

    • more beer

Valium always help. Man you guys have some scumbag fucks there just like we do here.

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Wherever there are human beings, there are scumbags.

        • more beer

Yea I know. I just kind of thought you had a smaller percentage of them there.

    • bad x 3, yuck. i sense some Falling Down type shit going down soon!

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I always said that if I would ever get the news that I’m suffering from an incurable disease, mayhem will ensue.

    • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

There’s something deeply sickening about people that get off on hurting animals

      • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

My opinion? People that deliberately torture and kill animals just to get a kick out of it should be shot, period.

    • xengineofdeathx

Damn man, sounds like you’re having a rough time get better soon!

    • Goddamn. Really hope things turn around for you soon!

  • Sid Vicious Promos

    Good: got paid

    • hey SVP, here’s a good: check out NektarRemember the Future

      • Sid Vicious Promos

        I love their album recycled.

    • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Hey JJD, this is a question I for some reason have been wanting to ask you for quite some time. What’s your opinion on Cocteau Twins?

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3diz8I0AVVk

      • xengineofdeathx

        Great band.

        • KJM, Dr. Disco

          Agreed.

      • Sid Vicious Promos

        I’ve never been a fan.

        • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I throught they would be right up your alley.

          • KJM, Dr. Disco

I like some of their stuff, haven’t listened to them in a while.

          • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

I can’t really listen to this kind of so-called dream pop for hours and hours, but a few of their albums are really good. Once in a while, it’s nice to try something different to switch things up a bit.

      • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

Nobody really asked for my opinion, but I shall share it anyway.

I fucking love the Twins and have all of their albums, Heaven Or Las Vegas being my favorite

  • Guacamole Jim

    GOOD: Visiting my fiancee!

BAD: It’s in the US, where your president repeals tax funded health care, then praises other governments for having tax funded health care.

UGLY: I just cleaned out the second sink, the one where the dishes drain into. For a sink that never gets used, it’s horrifyingly dirty.

More like Hard Rock Cafe. Adam Curry had more metal in his pinky than that fucking publicity clown.

  • Good: last Friday we went to see 2001: A Space Odyssey on the big screen (midnight showing, so lots of coffee was involved). holy f**k that movie is incredible. now i’ve seen the movie before, as a teenager; but it’s different as an adult. it looks as crisp and clear as a movie filmed this year too!

    • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

First time I saw that movie, I was 12. And I thought it sucked ass.
I have a feeling I should probably revisit the movie.

      • it’s long and slow AF. best enjoyed enhanced 😉

        • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Since I’m stuck at home for another couple of weeks, I’ll probably watch it again soon enough.
Yesterday I revisited one of my childhood favorites.

          https://media.giphy.com/media/l4Ki73hTkhyXbGdQQ/giphy.gif

        • Depechemodeisgangsta

TBH to this day, i still don’t even know what the movie is about but it’s such a great movie, people just have to be open minded because there are times that it feels like nothing is happening.

          • to me, it’s a perfect example of: the plot takes backseat to the audio and visuals. and i completely understand how some folks can’t do that. after all, everyone seeks different aspects of art

    • CyberneticOrganism

I would love to see that in the theater

    • KJM, Dr. Disco

I’ve done that a few times, never gets old for me.

    • frozengoatsheadupanunsarse

2001: A Space Odyssey is so ace. My theory is that its all a sex thing. The monolith is a penis, and later on there’s definitely a spacecraft that looks like a sperm and one that looks like an egg. And at the end there’s a tunnel and a baby.

    • Max

At the theatre where I work they once had a screening of 2001 where, for the parts that have music, a live symphony orchestra and choir did the score with the sound from the film turned down for those parts. Pretty cool.

    • Señor Jefe El Rossover

      I love that film.

  • Depechemodeisgangsta

Work went fast this week, but i work Saturdays also which i don’t mind TBH, Traffic will be a pain since there is a big Hip Hop show in downtown, but other than that everything else is good.

  • TheGranulatingDarkSatanicMilfs

Good: Seeing At The Drive In tomorrow. Also, my new Jackson Rhoads

Bad: Weeds overtaking my front and back yards. Time for some Roundup X

Ugly: How bored I’m going to be at work when there’s nothing to do because nobody can afford health care anymore

  • xengineofdeathx

Good: Last weekend I got gold at the USA Judo Senior Nationals, still don’t believe it.

Bad: I got tickets to Opeth and Gojira and can’t get the day off work

Ugly: I tried some wagyu beef and let’s just say my toilet is on strike. So rich.

    • FrankWhiteKingOfNY

Congrats with the gold! When I was a kid I only took a couple of judo lessons, I quickly moved into kickboxing because that was what everybody else was doing over here at the time.

      • xengineofdeathx

Thanks man! I would definitely love to do striking as well. It’s been a long road with lots of injuries and lost girlfriends, but it’s all been worth it.

      Toilet Ov Wagyu

      • xengineofdeathx

        Believe it dude.

  • Good: Work had Qdoba brought in for lunch so holy shit did I eat a lot of burrito stuff. Impulse-bought four albums today.

Bad: Finding out that my job might get eaten by a corporate restructuring in the next few months, might not.

    Ugly: Mitch McConnell’s wattle.

  • The Mighty Thorange

Good: Finally finished and submitted my dissertation. Now getting pished. There is a beer festival in town tomorrow and my friends band is playing tomorrow night, so I will be getting pished tomorrow too.
Bad: Need to resit my composition module. My lecturer for that module is still a complete arse-piece.
Ugly: The surge of support for the Conservatives in England and from hardcore unionists up here. And my very probable hangover come Sunday.

    • Óðinn

Have I ever asked what about your area of study?

      • The Mighty Thorange

I don’t think you have. I study music.

        • Óðinn

That’s fantastic! You’ve studied a subject of interest to you.

  • Sid Vicious Promos

Now I have a bad: I’m going to a Yankees game on June 25th against the Rangers. I bought 4 tickets for me and my friends. Apparently they invited a fifth person and did not tell me so I only bought 4 tickets and I can’t buy a fifth one because the other two in the row that were for sale sold. I’m going to have some very unhappy friends tomorrow.

  • Óðinn

GOOD: I’m not always a fan of Charvel guitars. They’re known for painting their cookie-cutter Metal-bro guitars so that they’re unironically ugly with Japanese sunbursts, snakeskin, and super-lame racing stripes, etc. But this woodgrain San Dimas HH looks pretty sweet.

  • frozengoatsheadupanunsarse

Good: Just watched Green Room. Late to the party but I liked it a lot. Filters pulpy thrills through a serious sensibility to consistently gripping and at times impactfully grisly effect. Finished reading Angela Carter’s Shadow Dance the other day. Mighty impressive debut, though leaves room to grow in her handling of character. I read her fifth a couple months back so I know she mastered it at least by then. Now midway through The Dumb Waiter (Pinter). Good stuff, expectedly tense, creepy and puzzling. Seeing Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead at the theatre tomorrow. Production with Daniel Radcliffe as one or other of the leads, really looking forward to it. Currently listening to pretty sweet UK black metallers The Infernal Sea. Second wave sound and ferocity, splash of atmosphere here and there (some nice ghostly chorus wails), good dollop of ‘n roll.

Bad: Shit man, I read the papers.

  • The Tetrachord of Archytas

Ugly: babysitting with my girlfriend…watching a movie called vampire dog….
